Yummy!! Highly recommend the fish & chips (huge pieces), coleslaw (think if ambrosia salad and coleslaw had a baby), and chowder (peppery and lots of clam bits). Long Beach doesn't want for chowder houses - each one claiming to be the local favorite. There's no way you can try them all, but I had good luck with Captain Bob's chowder the day before, so I decided to give it another go round for some fishes. Captain Bob's is right next to Marsh's museum so it's within walking distance of everything in the middle of town. It's a very small place with some seating inside and pub tables outside. You order and pay at the counter so dining does not take long. I had the alligator chowder the first day and enjoyed it very much. It's a red chowder and the meat is ground up so the uninitiated and less adventurous would think it was simply ground beef. It was more like a soup - less thick than regular chowder, but quite good; just a little spicy, and served with a bread stick and oyster crackers. Now, the fish and chips might be the best cod fish and chips I've ever had. Spuds in the Seattle area has the best halibut, but so far I have to give the trophy for best cod to Captain Bob's. It was thick, flaky, tender, juicy, meaty and best of all, the breading was perfect. It wasn't super oily & had great texture. The breading did fall off kinda easily but I was enjoying it regardless. My parents opted for the cheaper fish and chips at an establishment up the street that also has shakes and ice cream but they were both disappointed with theirs and felt the $1 they saved was not well saved. When I have a checklist of foods I want to try and seafood is on that list, I really appreciate a no frills experience like this where the focus is on serving a few basic items done well, so I can walk in, place my order and get my food faster than an order at a McDonalds. I don't have to mess with being waited on which requires much more planning and coordination with others in a group. I definitely recommend Captain Bob's if that's the experience you are looking for. read more

As you can tell I don't usually partake in reviewing restaurants- I'm a Chef and typically directly reach out to the staff while I'm in the establishment but yesterday I was on the road and needed a quick grab and go. My theory on good food is you find it typically just one step beyond what stands out to you. In a beach town especially, the most ideal and most visible location is typically a trap so I went slightly inland and found a small joint where the owners were cooking the soups of the day (a delicious scallop mushroom soup) and mixing their crab salad for the days hungry guests. This is where you find the best food. When there is no barrier between the professionals who aim to please and their guests. This is where the true joy of serving good food comes from. You see the fruits of your labor in the looks of disbelief and smiles. Crab roll was better than any other crab roll I've had- take it from a Boston native. Perfectly toasted roll contrasts the fresh crab and fresh crunchy celery. Scallop and mushroom soup was epic. Definitely going to try and develop a similar recipe and recreate at home! Outstanding. The place is small!!! But it's worth every minute of standing in line! The scallop mushroom chowder was an experience in itself!! So many scallops at the bottom of the bowl I thought they were potatoes at 1st. The clam chowder was good also, it's on par for what you'd expect a thick warm chowda to be..the fish and chips were fresh and cooked perfectly if you're in town this is the best place for fish and chips in my opinion. The 2 person team that runs the place is quick and friendly I mean I watched her cook at least a dozen orders at once by HERSELF, then wait tables; she's related to Wonder Woman I'm sure ;) They put everything into there food here and you can tell in every bite. First off, they do make you aware that the wait time will be awhile. But I think 30 minutes for fried fish with no other customers in the vicinity is a bit too long. The food has great potential, good ideas, but it does lack a bit of seasoning , so it comes off bland. They do give you good and nice piece of fish!! Good amount. The chowder was interesting, we got it over fries and it was more of a gravy than chowder. Lacked seasoning as well, it came off thick and bland so after a few bites it's not inviting. I've noticed different people from the business replying back to feedback, I think it's very important for companies to be open minded to feedback, I've noticed some replies are welcoming, others are not. Captain Bob's should be your go-to next time you're in Long Beach, WA. It's a simple little spot with a nicely concise menu. I decided to go with the crab roll and a side of chowder, which was reasonably priced. The crab roll was excellent: not too heavily dressed, on a split top toasted bun. I do wish there had been chunks of crab, as there is in a lobster roll, but I understand that it's not quite the same beast. The chowder was a real winner as well. Nice pieces of clam in a rich and creamy chowder. It was heating away on the stove when we walked in, freshly made, so you know it's going to be good! Finally, the folks who run this place are kind and considerate. They brought out our finished crab rolls when they were done, and they had a kind word and smile for everyone who came by. This small little restaurant has so much more to offer than you see at first. My daughter got a bowl of their shrimp chowder and it had 6 or more large shrimp in it and she loved it. My husband son and I all got the clam chowder and it was pretty great as well. The chowders were hot right off the stove from a pot. And while we were there they were starting a new pot. My husband and I also got the crab roll. It was really good and full of crab. The best part was it wasn't filled with fillers and actually tasted like crab. I've been to this establishment before and had good memories of the chowder. Today, the chowder seemed very lumpy. A little bland, and too much potatoes and not enough clams. A little disappointed. The cod fish and chips was really good. The cod had big flaky layers with jur the right amount of breading. Pieces were huge compared to other restaurants in the area. This unpretentious little shop front next to the funny and weird Marsh's.. is slinging some tasty as heck chowder.. dare I say "the best' I ever had?!! The kind lady at the counter even let us try a sample before we decided on which chowder to order, very cool! I had the salmon and hubby had the classic clam as both are on point. I ordered the meal deal: Dungeness crab roll on the toasty buttered bun with a cup of Salmon Chowder for $16.50. Worth every penny.. so dang tasty. They serve Fish & Chips that looked fantastic too, will have to pop back by. The only down side is it is a small place so it can fill up but it is not a sit long place so no worry, turn over happens.. also too many people 'clueless' blocking the door after you order and are carrying a try full so you may also sit at one of the outside tables. The moment I walked in the door I was relieved. All the staff had masks on. They were also beyond friendly. Night and day from the experience I had earlier. Ordered a crab roll to go. While it was being prepared I went to the novelty shop next door. Fun store. Came back and grabbed my crab roll and off I went. It was delicious. Fresh crab, great bread. I didn't think the driving with a crab roll part through . It was messy but worth it. One tiny suggestion? If it's to go maybe cut it in half for ease of eating? Totally not their fault. Love to travel the west coast and try different chowders. This place was quite deceiving as the reviews portrayed the chowder to be quite good. I will admit we arrived towards the end of the day and it very well could have been the "bottom of the barrel" remains, but this is what I was given to eat and what I paid for. The chowder had a very gelatinous texture. We took it home, and rather than have a liquid consistency, the chowder sort of "jiggled". The taste wasn't necessarily bad, but it wasn't any sort of chowder that I'd be bothered to ever brag about or recommend or even come back for. The clams were extremely unpleasant, they were extremely rubbery and could not be chewed. As of right now this is probably one of the worst 3 chowders I've ever had. I really don't want to give bad reviews for food especially during these times, however, if you are going to charge $60 for four items, I will say it is fair to expect good food. read more

My wife and I come to the area to stay at a friend's beach house several times a year. We always stop at Captain Bob's and either eat there or get some of their amazing food to take back to the house. Their standby clam chowder is absolutely amazing. Thick and creamy with an incredible amount of fresh local clams. Don't miss it, whether a cup with a meal or a larger serving on its own. What to say about this place- we really really enjoyed our food. I got the crab roll (definitely worth the price!!!!) I loved the toasted bread and the crunch from the celery and lettuce. Chowder was New England style-which I love. Just needed some butter on top- but otherwise perfect. There were a TON of clams in our chowder. Other places I'm lucky if I get 5 in a small cup, like what I got. The sourdough bread was SOUR! Such a nice change from other bread bowls we've had. Boyfriend thought it was too sour- don't mind his wrong opinion, though. I loved it and stole his top to dip in my cup of chowder. Whoever made that starter should be proud! I loved this little place. Dog friendly as well. It was nice to sit outside with our buddy and enjoy delicious food. Owners were great. Service was wonderful and fast. We ate here every day during our visit to Long Beach. We had clam chowder, smoked salmon chowder, chili cheese fries and crab cakes. Everything is sooo delicious we had to keep going back. I typically don't like crab cakes (too much filler, not enough crab) but Bob's cakes are all crab and are cooked perfectly! And you have to try them with their homemade tartar sauce . We've had their fish and chips before and they are so good too. Every day they have a new special or chowder. We love this place!! 7/7/19 Just spent the 4th weekend and ate there again every day. Took my mom who always loves crab cakes and says these were the best she's ever had. We had clam chowder, chili, salmon chowder and scallop chowder, crab cakes, salad and fish and chips this weekend, it was all DELICIOUS!!
