We were walking down the street along the main drag of town, looking for a nice place to eat. We found Castaways and it was packed. The host told us the wait would be 20-30 mins, so we put our names in and kept walking, exploring the street until it was time to return. They're pretty quick bussing tables to turn over guests in order to seat new ones. The waitress took our order fairly quickly and we sat back, listen to the live musician and waited for the food. The price was higher than we'd like, but honestly it was about the same as every other restaurant in the town. The food came in a timely manner and was good. Restrooms were also clean and tended too, even with this large of a crowd. This is going to be one of the local restaurants we want to return to in the future. Good Food--But Be Prepared to Wait The family was on the hunt for another seafood-focused meal, and this one started off a little sketchy. We were told the wait would be about 20 minutes. Forty-five minutes later, we finally got a table. The kids were well beyond irritated by that point, but we'd heard the food was good, so we stuck it out. Mom made a veteran move and quickly got an order of chicken strips and fruit going for the kids. Crisis averted. Then came the chowder--and this thing was basically the entire kitchen sink in a cup! My son and wife weren't huge fans because they prefer a simpler, creamy chowder. Me? I loved it. It was a busy cup with all kinds of flavor and great chunks of clams and potatoes. Definitely not traditional and definitely not boring. My son and daughter-in-law had the oyster shooters and loved them. They went down smooth and were a great start to the meal. The crab cakes were a solid choice, and the fish tacos came loaded with all the fixings and good-sized chunks of fish. The grilled salmon burger had a modest piece of salmon that was well seasoned, but the bun was a little underwhelming. A great bun can make all the difference! The winner of the day was the seafood pasta. It was a packed bowl loaded with salmon, clams, and prawns with excellent flavor. A couple pieces of toasted sourdough on the side finished it off perfectly. He loved it. Overall, the food itself was solid. The atmosphere was a little chaotic, but hey--it was a Saturday afternoon. Our waitress was very kind, helpful, and did a nice job taking care of us. The biggest miss was simply the wait. We were told 20 minutes and waited 45. With two little kids in our party, it seemed like one of the available booths could have easily accommodated us and saved everyone some frustration. Bottom line: I'd come back for the food. My wife and I came in for my birthday dinner. Was excited to order a full crab meal. steak and clam chowder. We ordered drinks (coke and beer) and after 15-20 minutes we had no one come to our table. Never got our drinks or the chance to order food. The guy who walked in behind us had his drink, appetizer and main course served to him. We had to call the waiter to us and ask him what is going on. He said he got the entire restaurant dumped on him even though there were multiple waiters running around. We personally saw him at the fountain machine and he did not bother to bring us a coke. The veges were overcooked at 5 pm. i couldn't tell the difference from the sour cream and horseradish cups Same color and texture. But the Prime Rib was good but the Ambiance was low. Sat at the bar and enjoyed the steamer linguini and a ginger beer. The bartender lady was so kind and friendly, I didn't get her name but she really made me feel so taken care of even though I wasn't drinking. Steamer linguini was FULL of steamer clams and bacon, they definitely don't skimp! The toasted baguette slices were just right with it, too. If I could give this place 100 stars I would. We were driving through on vacation and this place looked good so we stopped by. It's probably a place you would need reservations for but we got lucky and were there early and were seated immediately but by the time we left there were families waiting outside. The vibe is casual and cozy. The seafood lasagna was incredible. Not one bit fishy and cooked perfectly. My partner and I split all the things: cheesy crab toast, chowder, the scallops, oyster shooters, Brussels, the lasagna, and got a couple drinks each. The cranberry margarita was string and delicious. My partner had a couple beers and liked them. The service was great, the waitress was attentive and got everything right. Really appreciated her! This place was overall the best food we had on our 2 week trip from Mount baker to Bend, along the coast, through Seattle and all the mountain towns/NPs. read more

The food is good. But their policy is to NOT split the bill. They make you do it yourself. Isn't that special? They automatically charge you a 20% gratitude. And then. Make you do the split. We had a party of 18...we didn't get sit at the same table it was split (3tables) but they combined the damn bill. So if you have a big party DONT come here. A $1100 and 220 tip and they can't split the bill. read more

Castaways was the highlight of our Long Beach visit. The decor inside is awesome - lots of very cool photos of Long Beach from the past - and the vibes are great. It's very centrally located on the main strip. We ended up sitting at the bar to avoid a wait for a table (the entire bar section is open seating) and the bartender was super friendly. I ordered a steelhead burger with garlic fries off the specials menu and my husband got the Lighthouse cheeseburger. The food came out super fast and was SO delicious. I'll be thinking about those garlic fries for a very long time. The food was hot, super fresh, and so tasty. I cannot wait to go back and try some more things off the menu! read more

Last visit was back in 2013, time for an update. Again, this was our first meal after arriving in Long Beach (6/16/25). Nice to see it thrive after our previous visit 12 years ago. We timed it well because both the bar and restaurant was full house during our onsite meal. We shared their clam chowder. Tasty. I opted for the Club Sandwich with garlic tots. Goodness such a generous entree. This took me three sittings to finish it. The Homie had the Captain's Plate which included cod, clam strips, oysters, and shrimp. All well battered, seafood remained tender, and perfectly executed. This came with sides like broccolini, sweet potatoes, and whipped garlic potatoes. I snagged some bites...wow, flavor packed! Our waitperson was very friendly, checked in on us, and kept us well hydrated. No room for dessert, but we patted our stomachs carrying our takeout boxes back to the car. We wanted a good restaurant for seafood and especially clam chowder. All the food here was excellent. We got the sourdough bread bowl, which tastes like it's fresh homemade sourdough bread. The clam chowder is really good. The fish and chips were everything we could possibly want. We've tried several restaurants around town and so far this is the best one. 11 years after our first visit, I'm happy to report that Castaway's still has 5-star clam chowder -- among the best I've ever had. The atmosphere was inviting and cozy, and the service was competent throughout. We were there right at opening, and you could tell the chowder was freshly made, and it was chock full of goodness, in a base that wasn't too thick. It was perfect. Unfortunately, the scallop "shareable" dish that we ordered wasn't quite on the same level. The presentation was gorgeous, with the seared scallops lined up on a square plate, in a bed of their "zesty cream sauce" -- and freshly grilled French baguette slices on the corners. But the scallops themselves were overcooked and slightly rubbery, with a bit too much "seafood-y" flavor. Definitely not on par with the best scallops I've had. So moral of the story... definitely get the chowder when you go to Castaway's. read more

Ordered oyster shooters to go today, I had my first one and there was so much sand inside of it, I literally had to wash my mouth out, my wife goes inside to try to explain the situation and the older blonde waitress processed to argue with my wife saying since there was 1 gone she couldn't do anything about it my wife asked to get anything credited towards a new meal and she declined. She also said "if you were to open it and decide you didn't want it without touching it then I could do something about it" like what are you gonna resell them or something? Food was delicious (with the exception of the seared ahi, not much flavor and wasn't a good eating experience as there was the stringy part of the ahi made it hard to cut/eat). I had a great dinner this evening, the Ahi Tuna Csfe Salad. The tuna slices were coated in sesame seeds and expertly seared. Beautiful! Gorgeous avocado, diced mango, cucumbers, greens and a sesame dressing. Yum! I got through half of it and will enjoy the rest tomorrow. We ate here twice during our stay in Long Beach, and both times the food was excellent. The servers were all incredibly friendly and welcoming. When we were unsure about the clam chowder, they offered us a sample--which we ended up loving. I had the island tacos with blackened cod. The portion includes two flavorful tacos and a side; I opted to switch mine to a small Caesar salad, which was fresh and delicious. The fish tasted fresh, and the seasoning was spot on. I also had the PNW mocktail, which was flavorful and delicious--perfectly balanced and refreshing. As a group, we shared the fried calamari, which our 11- and 13-year-olds both enjoyed. We also ordered a side of bread that wasn't listed on the menu--sliced baguette with olive oil, garlic, parsley, and Parmesan. It was a simple but incredibly tasty addition. The ambiance was great--relaxed and inviting, with a coastal charm that made the whole dining experience even more enjoyable. The fries portions that accompanied the fish and the halibut sandwich were good, however the size of the sandwich and the 3 fish pieces were on the small size for the price. The fettuccine pesto with crab was very good, but the winner of the dinner was the award winning chowder. It was delicious. Again portions are on the small side. I'm aware that prices are a reflection of the inflation that is happening everywhere so I understand that they have to price their food accordingly. We were seated right away. Behind our table was a party of 6. 3 women and 3 men. They were older and one of the women was using a walker. The lady with the walker went to sit, missed the edge of the booth and hit the floor. 2 of the men at their table tried to lift her but were unable. A man at the table next to ours got up and helped the women up. I asked the lady when they were leaving if she was ok she said yes but she just had knee surgery a few days before. I did notice that not one of the employees even asked if the lady was ok. Next the food and service for our table. Kayleigh and the young man who seated us was great. My husband ordered the Cioppino and really enjoyed it. We also ordered the crab cakes to share and I had the spinach salad. Personally I thought the crab cakes had too much red pepper. Everyone raved about their meals and the food came out quite fast, considering it was dinner time on a Wednesday night in October, they weren't very busy. The service was okay, not quite as attentive as we'd have liked, but adequate. Entered to a full restaurant and bar area, recommended by our hotel...and looked like lots of locals, so that is always a great sign. Sat at a high top in the bar. Ordered the salmon. And a bottle of wine, which we did not finish, but the waitress corked it, and sealed it in a bag to take back to our room. Have never seen that, and we were impressed. Let's get back to the meal...it was so very good. The salmon was by far the highlight! Wanted to love the squash mash that is their specialty with each meal apparently, but it was way too sweet for our taste. We tried adding pepper to make it palatable to us, but nope. The baked potato was a bit under cooked, but tasty. And oh my gosh, the broccolini was amazing! Highly recommend the salmon; we chose grilled. When in town do not miss the Castaways Seafood Grille.
