Clam chowder: 3/5. It was decent. Not unforgettable, but it kept the seagulls from stealing the spotlight. Halibut: 5/5. This fish knew exactly why it showed up. Crispy, flaky, fresh, and absolutely delicious! My only request is a few more fries because they disappeared faster than my willpower around good seafood. Coleslaw: Let's just say... it had seen some things. The cabbage had already started making its own juice and seemed one step away from becoming sauerkraut. Definitely not my cup of tea. Tartar sauce: Good! No complaints. It quietly did its job. Service: 5/5. The staff were amazing! Super friendly, welcoming, and the food arrived incredibly fast. They definitely earned top marks. First off, I'm biased: I don't expect "amazing" from railroad-inspired diners.......this place proves how shortsighted that actually is. I stopped in hoping for reasonably priced fried seafood.....the Loose Caboose stopped me in my tracks! The service was attentive and really efficient, the ambiance is artfully decorated dollar bills stuck in between railroad and coastal memorabilia......it's an eclectic mix for ambiance. But: I just had probably the best clam chowder I've ever had. More clams, big chunks of clams, than potatoes......and somehow even tender, yet still identifiable celery? For real, I'd eat a gallon of that chowder. I almost took some to go. Fortunately, I went a bit jiggy with my fried prawns.....and got the 10pc! Like the chowder, the prawns were beyond excellent. Lightly breaded, tempura, almost. The breading actually had body and flavor....it isn't window dressing! And the prawns were very big, very juicy, and absolutely the perfect level of done.......a revelation among prawns, for sure! The sauces didn't taste like they came off the food service truck either. Both the tartar sauce and cocktail sauce were exemplary. The added coleslaw was bright and crisp with just a hint of malt vinegar.....a perfect dressing! This is a super cozy and friendly casual fresh seafood diner. Prices are reasonable and we loved our oysters, halibut and clam chowder! Kelly the owner is very friendly and she very kindly mailed my purse back to me when I accidentally left it hanging on my chair! Fish and chips: 2 small pieces of halibut (maybe) with a 10oz bowl of clam chowder a root beer for $23. Expensive and poor value. The clam chowder was absent of any clams and the 2 small pieces of fried fish were too small to be sold in s respectable restaurant. Save yourself the aggravation and go elsewhere. My wife's Reuben and my clam strips n' fries were good. The prices were pretty high, (over $50 total) but likely comparable to the other restaurants in the area. Face it, restaurant prices are high everywhere. I also paid $7 for one chocolate shake and, for the size, it was a little overpriced, but definitely tasty. Service was really good; waitress was attentive and fast. We've been here once before and it was good food/service then as well. So, yeah, we'll be back. read more

Fantastic! Superb atmosphere. The train car is a lovely idea and a great place to have our first eat-in meal in over a year. The server was so nice, the food was superb. Sunny warm day which quickly went downhill. Cannot believe I spent $60 here! I am not happy about it. Asked for the clams to start, the halibut after that. After sitting outside for 15 minutes was wanting to make sure they were NOT going to bring out the clams WITH the halibut & chips. ...so went back inside to make sure. . Only 2 tables had diners but waitress looked bothered when I said to be sure & bring clams out first...then cook chimed in saying she had just put the clams 'down'.....okeydokey...they would soon bring them out. Waited another 10 minutes & waitress brought a nice big tray of good looking clams out...no broth, as I expected just a small thing of melted butter & not nearly enough to dip them all in. OK again no prob...but my worst fears were confirmed...the clams were cold like they had sat out a while! All I could do was quickly pulled as many clams OUT of shells & shoved them into the small thing of melted butter which had SOME warmth still left....to try to warm them up.... eating them as fast as I could because.....looked up & here comes the halibut & chips! Although it was a small piece of halibut, it was pretty much as the sign said...fresh & quite tasty. No breading, no grease.. Just the real deal halibut.. Tartar sauce was mostly mayo....no pizzaz. Coleslaw was standard coleslaw but it was fresh & crisp. Tiny cup of chowder was marginal.....& again....not very warm. The young waitress never asked me after serving me, if I needed anything...just plunked the meal down...& quickly disappeared back inside. I went back in for ketchup for the fries. Asked for a fresh strawberry shake then & got a strange look. That is when she said 'OK but it will be 10-15 minutes'. Again...only saw 2 tables inside had diners....what is the problem here? Strawberry shake arrived to me out in my car now... but after trying to use a straw to slurp it up with no success, I pulled top off & saw the problem....the whole bottom of the shake was filled with berries that the blender had barely touched! A straw had no chance to slurp those puppies up.. My big mistake was taking a friendly fisherman's advice on where to eat....he said that he & his wife ate there weekly, & waxed on & on about what to get on the menu. And what's interesting....I always see a lot of cars there, probably locals...For me,it was not a memorable experience...the price was too high...could have eaten at Silver Salmon in Astoria with a lot better fish entre & way better ambiance. Chicken tenders, mozzarella sticks, tator tots or fish, unfortunately it gives an old, use the same oil for everything kind of taste. The Loose Caboose, we stopped in just to have a quick lunch and couldn't believe how this little mom and pop place has killer food! The waitress gave good service. I was delighted when I got my fish and chips which were halibut the breading on them was really tasty not greasy either had a toss salad with it and coleslaw. The good, the bad and the ugly- We tried the kaboose for the first time since we got a place down here seven or eight years ago. Table service is good, the burgers and fries are tasty and the fried halibut is reasonably priced and has a really nice batter. The chowder is bad. Maybe the worst we've ever had. It has an odd slimey texture. I think maybe they use cornstarch thickener. The premises are unpleasant. Theres a thin plastic coating on the table that was dirty, a bunch of dollar bills taped all around(germy) and the salt and pepper shakers and ketchup container were sticky and covered with chunks of stuff from previous diners. Do yourself a favor, skip the chowder and order food for takeout. read more

The food came out three or four orders at a time and some people had completely finished their meals when we finally asked our waitress about the missing meal - a burger and fries. Made a trip to Long Beach recently. Just to see the ocean and breathe some fresh air. We got takeout from the loose caboose diner. Fish and chips. Made with halibut. A side of clam chowder. Man this stuff is great. The halibut came with only two small pieces. Kind of pricey at almost $18 for two pieces of halibut and a cup of soup. I realize businesses are trying to stay open, but I felt like it was a little small for the price. I would definitely go back here and try this place again. At this Time you call in your order and they bring it out to you. When this place opens back up it's on my list of go backs. read more

I was nearby and found this spot by Yelp. They are not gourmand but they are quality. I had the fried fish as salad. They had a choice of dressings, and they adapted to my just vinegar. In my sitting were families with toddlers young children, welcomed by staff. I'm not an expert on the Long Beach universe of restaurants. But I would recommend this for casual South. The most unique of this spot is that they have a model train circulating. That can work for children. It makes a rain sound. read more
