I think this bar has a lot of potential! Whoever came up with the theme and found the location is really using their noggin... Although it's located RIGHT next to The Stumbling Monk - it seats/holds 5x more customers and serves food. Very smart! I haven't had the food but friends have told me it's to die for. I'll take their word for it and try it next time I'm there. (I'll review the food next time as well.) They serve chicken and waffles - a combo I have yet to eat, as well as po-boys which everyone is buzzing about. The theme of the bar is nautical/pirate and it matches really well with the big wooden decks they built to house the customers who are outside enjoying the summer weather. What I did not know is that the back deck makes you feel like you're at a sexy house party. The best feature about Captain Black's is the one thing that will keep me coming back here over and over and that is the rooftop deck area that features a great view of Seattle from Capitol Hill. On any type of decent Seattle day, this is a great spot to hang out with friends enjoying some good food and a few drinks while checking out the local scenery. The inside of the bar is also a pretty fun hang out spot, especially if you want to watch a game or two as they have a few TV's showing whatever sports are on at the time. There is also a smaller deck right outside the entrance for more outside seating options, but the real party is definitely out on the main deck facing the city. There is always a good mix of people in groups, couples, or even a few solo flyers. The happy hour here is above average with a good selection of food and drinks at decent prices. The main item on the menu they are known for is the chicken and waffles although I have to say I wasn't all that impressed when I took the opportunity to give it a try. It wasn't bad by any means, but it also wasn't anything to write home about which was a little disappointing for what is supposed to be their signature item. read more

BOO, Captain Black's. BOO. First off, patio = awesome. Everything else = laskdfj,mxzc no. I didn't have food here (and according to everybody else's reviews, probably a good move), but I did order some drinks during happy hour. I decided to get my friend's drinks as I owed her some money anyway, and her drinks were $3/each per the happy hour menu. So 3 well drinks x $3 happy hour price = $9. Right? Nope. Not at Captain Black's. They do math a bit differently here. I tell the waitress that I'm getting both of our drinks, and my ticket comes to $12. I ask if that's for all of our drinks, and she says, "Oh, no. Just yours. I'll ring you up a separate ticket with just her drinks." So I'm waiting and I have this ticket of $12 for my drinks (which is right), then I get the tab for my friend's drinks. $18. Wait. WTF? What just happened here? She ordered well drinks at $3 each during the right time! What gives?! So I grab the waitress and ask her about it, and her response is, "Oh, well her drink is $4 for the vodka...and...$2 for the juice?" Yeah. Like a question. And so I'm pissed because that's A.) BS, and B.) flat out wrong and false advertising. So then a few minutes later she comes back out and has another ticket for my friend's drinks, and the total is now $14. She tells me that she made a mistake and that she cancelled out the original $18 ticket for my friend's drinks. I'm still irked because that's not they're still not honoring the happy hour price, and now my card has been charged 3 times. So here it is, about 5 days later, and Captain Black's has charged my account a total of $49 for 5 drinks and has credited my account a total of $0. So. I'm a little pissed at this place, and I will NEVER. EVER. EVER. Return. It took one visit, and I'm done. If you like being mislead and charged way too much for drinks, then this is your jam! If not, go somewhere else. I recommend Deluxe or Cafe Met. They actually do it right. read more

Once upon a time, it was a warm summer night in Seattle. We came to this place for their mythical happy hour. All was well until we stepped foot into captain blacks. Suddenly, it got cold. Winter was coming. The invisible balls of flame the blonde id checker was throwing at us were almost too much to handle. Fortunately, I earned an "A" in my "local hostile hipsters psychology 101" class from growing up in San Francisco. Thank god. We initially came up and the lady told us their card reader was down. Ok. That does happen. I just found it hard to believe that all 30-40 of the other people their conveniently had cash on them. So we ventured into the surrounding neighborhood to find an atm. Someone yelled out "faggot" at us from their car while driving by. Cmon, that insult is so pre-June 26th. Use something hurtful like "basic".....no one wants to be basic. I digress.... We came back after getting cash. The ID checker lady once again tried using her witchy ways to make sure we wouldn't go in by trying to say I had a fake ID. She used one of those fancy bouncer tricks by saying my birth date wrong to see if I'd catch it. I did catch it. She gave me an evil smirk when I passed her test. I smirked back. It was the courteous thing to do. We sat down. We were good. The blonde lady didn't come in and attack us. I was really worried about that. But We were all fine. So We asked about their happy hour with their food that was listed on their website. Low and behold, they do not offer any. Hungry, tired, confused....we all agreed our gold schillings would best be spent elsewhere. So we left! We went around the corner to the hillside bar and josh was our bartender and he was rad so we left him a nice tip. He was a cool wizard. Everyone at captain blacks were box trolls. At first I was forgiving cause they were new and probably still figuring out ordering/inventory and whatnot, but now it's just obnoxious. Fellowship of the Rings with subtitles playing on two tvs. The bouncer flipping through three-ring binders of plastic encased Magic the Gathering cards when he puts down his Gene Wolfe book. The whiteboynerdfros present on the ringleader made me know that everyone in the house was going to appreciate obscure Monty Python lines worked into conversation. The coffee is bad, but the drinks are stiff and span from the usual top shelf sodomy prices to $2 Rainiers. I hear they have food, but who cares when you're drinking, making animal noises at your friends inbetween talking like a scalawag and cursing like a pirate. Don't know what I'm talking about? Captain Blacks is a great place to kick back with some drinks and enjoy the warm summer weather. The beer selection is a bit limited, although they've got one of my favorites (Manny's) and they've got some cheap swill (Rainier) if that's the way you roll. Their Captain's Tea is delicious and refreshing. The margaritas are run-of-the-mill, but not bad if you want a tall, cold drink to sip. The food is decent, though a bit limited. Pretty much everything is deep fried. I had the cod po' boy, which was piping hot (although the bun was cold). It was fairly bland though, so I loaded it up with hot sauce. It didn't rock my world, but at happy hour it was only $6, it came with some tasty fries and it filled me up. I don't think I'd go out of my way to come here, but since it's a short walk from where I live it makes for a great summer hangout. Their indoor seating is pretty limited, so I fear for their business once the weather turns cold and damp. read more

Never had chicken and waffles before so this was a bit of a surprise for me. In fact I hadn't had fried chicken at all in about 15 years. It was worth the wait. OMG Good. I loved everything about it. The waffle was delicate and crispy not too sweet complementing the fried chicken breast which I prefer strongly to any other part. The syrup and Orange butter added a nice touch. DECKS! DEEP FRYER! This is the essence of Captain Blacks appeal. It was packed by 7pm on a sunny weekday, the vibe was similar to the Linda's crowd: young, wearing American Apparel and ready to drink. The happy hour (4-6pm) is well priced, the regular menu could be $2 less for everything. The beer selection is lacking with only 4 taps ($15 pitchers) plus Rainier ($8 pitchers). The food is okay, my cod po' boy ($6 HH/$10 reg) was a bland and could use more sauce and maybe some cajun seasoning. The chicken po' boy is better but not anything I would order again. The deep fried bleechers cheese curds ($4 HH/$6 reg) are the highlight of the menu. The french fries are well seasoned, if nothing special, and the onion rings looked good. There is no table service, but despite being busy I didn't have to wait long to order at the bar. There is no sign outside that I noticed, just a deck in front (and another larger one in back!). read more

I expected to either totally love this place or totally hate this place given the reviews. It wasn't terrible, but it wasn't the best I've ever had, either. The Yelp crew practically took this place over on a Monday night following the Mustache Bash at the HG Lodge. We packed the joint! My (admittedly more-than-tipsy) self ordered the fried mac and cheese and the Chicken and Waffles. I've only had Chicken and Waffles at Roscoe's in L.A., so I was curious to see how they'd compare. The result? Meh. The waffle was unique - heavy on the clove and cinnamony flavor, but the fried chicken was dry and small. The fried mac and cheese was nibble-worthy, but not woth making a special trip out for. (FWIW, the regular mac and cheese is much better.) My crazy husband ordered a salad, which I didn't touch for obvious reasons. But it looked fresh, so I guess that counts for something. Captain Black's is definitely more of a beer joint than a food joint, so come here for some cheap whiskey and hipster gawking, but little else. read more

Just got back from a severely underwhelming trip to Captain Blacks' Happy Hour. We had been once before and enjoyed the Po Boys (I'm southern, so this can be hard to do!). I had purchased a gift card from StrangerMart and figured we would have at the very least a decent time. I was wrong. First off, what the hell is with not guiding people that they have to order at the bar? I don't mind doing it, but put up a sign or something to help people out. There seems to be no system for keeping track of tables' orders and what not. Second, we ordered Cod Po boy, fries w/gravy, and hush puppies from the happy hour menu. I food was served with no accoutrement to speak of; had to go to the bar for forks, napkin, ketchup, etc. The po boy was damn near inedible, as the lettuce concoction that came on it ended up in my lap with every bite. I finished the second half by just eating the fish and tartar sauce on the top slice of bread. Hush puppies were UNCOOKED the first time, straight up dough in the middle. Sent them back to the kitchen very politely, and got a second batch that was too charred to be eaten. I think the oil was too hot or something? There are plenty of fried foods on the menu, so you would think one of the cooks could have mastered the art of deep frying properly. The drinks were fine, I was happy with my $6 margarita. However, before leaving, my husband discovered there was a wad of white gum stuck to his nice black slacks. I understand this is not the establishments fault per se, but WTF? Well, we got there right when it opened on a Saturday and were ready for our first Captain Blacks experience. It wasn't very busy yet...and we quickly figured out the process of ordering here. Go to the bar to order everything. Including refills of your drinks. This wasn't an issue until the place filled up and waiting in line for a refill of pop took FOREVER. Anyway, back to ordering. The bartender tried to do one of those cool things where they take your order without writing anything down. I had a feeling something was going to go wrong. I was with 3 other people and our food slowly started to trickle out. I ordered Mac and Cheese and a Chicken Po boy. My husband ordered chicken and waffles. The mac and cheese was decent. The chicken on my sandwich was very VERY dry. I wanted some sort of sauce to dip it in so I wouldn't choke. 15 minutes later, my husband's food had not arrived. I finally tracked down one of the three people working and discovered that his order was never put in. I knew it. So much for being super cool and not writing stuff down. Overall, I wasn't too impressed. The lines were way too long to go back up the bar for refills and to cash out. The food wasn't that great. The service wasn't anything to write home about. When I first heard about captain blacks, I imagine a dark, pirate dive bar full of hip capitol hill people drinking PBR and eating deep fried cheese curds. Their food menu sounds radical with the lack of deep fried goodness, I was basically thinking it was going to be, Psycho Suzie's, in Minneapolis, but it wasn't, not even close. I would say the "mode" average was 40 from 25 to 45 professionals, very bright inside with a few sailing decor. It was packed to the brim with Silver foxes and it took awhile to get the bar tenders attention. The kitchen closed,what I think, was pretty early near 1, perhaps it was just on that day. I feel like we got away with something. It was quiet on the shady deck on a holiday! Granted, we left by 830, but still--there was almost no one there! The beer selection is meager. That is my only criticism. I am a spoiled Seattle dweller who likes to have 20 choices on tap. Captain Black's had 4 or 5; no IPA. Oh well, boo hoo. Guess I'll get a mojito. The food was great. Chicken breast perfectly tender, with perfectly crispy skin. Almost boneless. Don't know why they describe it as "airline chicken breast". That implies dry, grey, tasteless. This was perfect. Waffles were...eh. A bit chewy, but the orange butter saved them. Very flavorful. Good fries, and a good amount. Drinks were good. The mojito was the perfect strength. It has kick, but I can drink two and still walk. Two decks, people. Two! It would be helpful to have a little sign explaining whether it's table service or we should go to the bar. I don't have a preference, but it's hard to know if you've been noticed sitting outside & it feels like you've offended someone if you order at the bar. A trifle confusing. If it had been crowded and/or loud, I wouldn't consider going back. Since it was pleasant, I'm looking forward to our next visit. read more

Fair warning, you might want to wait a few more weeks - or a month - before going here if you don't want your ordering process to go like "Oh, you're out of that? Hmm, well, how about -X-? Ohh, you're out of that too?? Hmm..." They've definitely got some kinks to work out, and it seems like they turned out to be more popular than they expected. When I went a week ago they were all out of the Diamond Knot brown ale and a couple of the food items. When I went this Monday they were out of the deep fried cheese curds and the Diamond Knot *and* Manny's. Their beer selection is seriously lacking. The Rainier is an attempt to target Cap Hill hipsters I guess (PBR would be better though) - okay, that's totally fine, but you have to have at least one local microbrew. Given that they've been out of Diamond Knot and Manny's for two weeks, and Blue Moon is not really a microbrew (owned by Budweiser) that leaves them with just Peroni (import) and Rainier. I'm not sure what's so hard about ordering more kegs, but I hope they work it out soon. Carry-out/take-out: they'll do take-out food (useful when you want to go next door to the Monk because you don't want to drink Rainier ;)) but they don't have plastic silverware yet, so I had to be creative and tear out a corner of the cardboard box the food came in (nice eco-friendly cardboard boxes) to make a shovel-like spoon for my mac+cheese (I didn't have time to go home to get silverware). As said in other reviews, the location, deck, and atmosphere are great. This is definitely 4 stars if they work out their inventory issues and improve the tap selection a little. read more

DON'T LISTEN TO URBANSPOON.COM! I would say my visit here was pretty disappointing. I would have to agree that the good thing is the location, the patio in the front and back, the cleanliness, and the prices were decent for everything. The negative part is that the waitress was so bad/borderline rude, that it was hard to really enjoy the full experience. I don't even know her name and perhaps, it 's because she doesn't want us to yelp about her, but she's the one with the brown long hair and generally serves the front patio. I had to ask her 3 times to clear the table because we took over a table immediately after someone else left and she definitely didn't do it with a smile. MAYBE, it's because she knew she was guaranteed the automatic 18% with a large group? The guy that checks your ID is probably the best representative of Captain Blacks. Oh and the smaller dark haired girl that serves in the back patio was nice too. The chicken and waffles were overrated , the poor boy was definitely poor, the fries were flavorless and the meal took 15 minutes plus the "kitchen is backed up" time frame to be served (totaled about a 30 minute wait). I personally enjoyed the mac and cheese, but others say it was too cheesy, so you can make your own assessment. Overall, I probably wouldn't go back there again, but if I did, I would go back not hungry and when I'm feeling really patient. My advice to you is to do the same. read more

Damn. There seems to be so many "trendy" little dives like this in Seattle that thrive on their trendiness that they forget to put oysters on the poorboy. Especially at 12 bucks! No exaggeration (two small osters, lots of lettuce and pickle stuff? with cold fries). I found no need for a freakin sub role for this (so my bf ate the bread). I have oysters alot and make my own poorboy but the menu was so limited, I had to get SOMETHING and the bf had bragged about this place. We were both disappointed. The BF was embarrassed. One of my girlfriend's friends recommended Captain Black's as a great happy hour place, so we decided to check it out last Friday. One of the bartenders gave us a cocktail menu and we ordered a couple items from the menu. Unfortunately, I temporarily forgot an important rule for dive bars which is "Don't ever order cocktails at a dive bar." These drinks were horrible. My girlfriend had a whiskey lemonade which contained really harsh-tasting (even for well) whiskey competing against extremely sour lemon syrup without nearly enough sugar to balance the tastes out. I can't remember the name of the cocktail I ordered but it was rum with grapefruit juice, simple syrup, and soda water. As much as I stirred the drink, with every sip I could still taste every ingredient separately because they didn't complement each other at all. Even worse, both drinks cost about $8 each. Luckily, they had a few decent beers on tap including Shiner Bock, which is one of my favorites. To eat, we got an order of fried mac and cheese bites and fried okra. Both of these appetizers were really tasty, especially the mac and cheese. They definitely went a little overboard (pun not intended) with the portion size on the fried okra as it was way too much even for two people, but it would be perfect for four people. They have an outdoor patio area which has a pretty good view of downtown, although you should definitely be sure to bring your sunglasses as it faces westward. Literally every time we've been in the past year, she has been rude to us in one way or another. Friends of ours have asked specifically if we've gotten "the bad one." It's a sunny day in Seattle...really, that does happen here. And you're looking for a place to lounge on a patio. This is one of the best places to go without having to pay dearly for it. PARKING: Street parking. The venue does not open until late afternoon, so more than likely you will have a tough time finding a spot around here. Be prepared to walk. VENUE: The building was built in 1923. I'm not sure if Captain Blacks was part of the original structure, but the building lies on an incline and the bar ends up having a street level front entrance and a roof top batio in the back. PATIO: The rooftop patio lies on the West side of the place. As this is on the West side of the Hill, the tops of the buildings drop for the most part with a few buildings that tower above the skyline. However, the skyline is not fully obstructed, and in between the buildings you can a get a kickass sunset with the Olympics in the foreground. That's right, you have a view of Oly Pen. And for this reason you should have Captain Blacks on your list of places to go, especially if you're looking for outside seating with a view. AMBIENCE/DECOR: Not much going on for decor. Nonetheless, this place is heavy on the nautical theme. I would love to see this place build more on that and really bomb the walls with the ship theme. The people who come here are your typical Hill scenesters (the local village types, not the UW students temporarily staying here). FOOD: Damn good chicken and waffles. BOOZE/BEER: Not a wide selection for beer or booze. But I don't really care about micros when I can sit on the patio, read a book, and look up occasionally and see the Olympic peaks. read more

The real reason to go here is the deck. If there is a better--no, ANY--other deck on the Hill that is not on top of overpriced condos, I don't know where it is, but please tell me. The view is gradually getting shuttered in by condos in Belltown and SLU, but still one of the best places to enjoy a sunny, or not so sunny, happy hour. I've always walked past this dark cottage in the alley and thought to myself, what the hell types of ritualistic sacrifices are goin' on in there?! Far from my imagination, this place is actually pretty hipster infested when you walk inside. Your expectations are even further shattered when you see all of em' eating chicken and waffles. Hahaha. I love the deck, it's really hard to go wrong with such a nice deck when we're finally having a string of good weather. I had a Bulleit and ginger beer (ok, their ginger beer certainly isn't Rachel's, or even Reed's) and their fish tacos. The reason I will be back here is the patio! It was such a fun place to meet up and catch up with friends on a sunny day. One of the nicest outdoor seating in Seattle.
