Hit this place earlier today for happy hour. I was the second person in the place and both of the bartenders spoke to me cordially and casually. The service was excellent, though the food took a bit to come out and they were running out of silverware and napkins. My cohorts and I sampled the fried chicken and waffles, fried Beecher's cheese curds, fried mac 'n cheese wedges, fried pickles, and the gumbo. I'd say that the cheese curds were the finest thing on our table, followed by the waffle (which had a generous scoop of butter and delicious maple syrup to boot), and the mac 'n cheese. I could pass on the chicken next time, however--the portion was small, the breading was heavy and crumbly, and the white meat chicken breast was a bit dry. The bartender tried to convince me that the house drink, a sweet tea vodka, soda, and muddled lemon concoction, would be strong enough to get me buzzin', and while it was absolutely delish, that and two well drinks barely wet my whistle. Perhaps they were a light pour, or perhaps it was my vodka-absorbing Russian heritage that prevented me from feeling them. No worries; I will definitely be coming back for another round. read more

The deck is very nice and I'll probably enjoy an afternoon cocktail or beer there in the future, but the food is unforgivable. The service was substandard as well, but the real crime is detailed below. If you're going to put chicken and waffles on your menu (and have the nerve to charge $11 for it) you'd better have your game down. Soggy breading falling off of wet skin on a chopped up breast (pretentiously using the chef's term "airline breast" on the menu) tasted like a frozen leftover that wasn't good to start with. The waffle was even more disappointing. A large crunchy cookie folded over on itself. Not good. Seattle is sadly lacking in good chicken and waffles, but Portland has a few nice spots. To really get a good idea of what this dish is supposed to taste like, head down to Roscoe's in LA or Gladys Knight's Chicken and Waffles in Atlanta. Or just buy yourself some Krusteez mix and fried chicken from City Market to get a meal that's 100 times better than Captain Black's mockery. read more

I can't get enough of their chicken, waffles and cheese curds. Seriously I was just your everyday, average hipster weighing 95 lbs until I found this mecca. Now I am up to 160 and show no signs of stopping. Keep in mind that 160 lbs of hipster flesh is like 900 lbs of midwestern Wal-Mart flesh. Half their waitstaff are dickheads that make you feel like it's a privilege that they're even talking to you (oh life must be oh so hard) , but it doesn't matter when them chicken and waffles in your belly. read more

I was hungry. It was pride week. I couldnt go anywhere we went here. I ordered chicken, after an hour I got fish It had the top ramen chicken flavor powder on it (trust me i know) I didnt want to wait longer so I ordered a beer. The cup was all crusty and the beer was salted? So i put it on the tab and then when we wanted to get the hell out of there, they couldnt find our credit card. What can I say about Captain Blacks? They have a big west facing outdoor deck overlooking the landscape of Seattle. With peek-a-boo views of downtown, the Space Needle, and the Olympics, I can't think of a better place to relax with a cocktail and some good folks. We ventured out on a Monday night which was nice because it wasn't too crowded and we found a nice table along the rail. The vibe was chill, although I can imagine later in the week the place packed a la Linda's back porch. The drinks were nice and stiff and the food menu, southern inspired, is chock full of all of my favorites treats from my days wandering around the Bayou of Louisiana. We only came for drinks, but I'll definitely give the menu a try next time. read more

Nifty bar atmosphere being that it's a converted house. Like that they serve something other than cheeseburgers - bring on the fried shrimpy goodness! Disclaimer: I was only in this bar for approximately 15 minutes. It has a cool deck and a funky interior with a bit of a nautical theme to it. It was pretty quiet for a Friday at 11 pm which can be a plus or minutes depending on your mood. It is a little tucked away beside the monk with almost no exterior lighting which made for an awkward "is this the place?" moment. Attempted to go to Stumbling Monk before they opened. Turns out they won't let you in until they open, but Captain Black's around the corner had happy hour. Cheap beer that includes tax! Yes...the rooftop deck is indeed awesome! Went here yesterday for happy hour and we got a fried chicken po boy, fried cheese curds and a ceasar salad. The po boy was for my boyfriend and it looked a little dry but he said it was good. He did finish it within 5 minutes and while he was eating he probably said only a few sentences, so that means he really liked it. The po boy also came with fries, which were nicely seasoned and crispy and good. The cheese curds were nicely fried, stringy and delicious. I've had fried cheese curds before and these were actually very very greasy, don't know what oil they fry them in but then again...it's fried cheese curds, so of course it's gonna be greasy. The ceasar salad had too much dressing for me but I should have ordered lightly dressed so I don't blame them. It did have awesome big slices of parmesan cheese in it. Five stars all the way. Fried food, good vibe, funky music. This is my kind of place. Decided to go last night (Tuesday) with a few friends. Happy hour from 10-12 was on point. Got a good selection of drinks and we ended up getting a second round of food. Make sure to go on Tuesdays cause they got live DJs and last night he was playing some funky breaks and hip-hop. Stopped in at Happy Hour for fun on a lark and was so happy I did. They serve Stoup's Porter on tap, and it is fairly smokey, BUT thick n richest darkest baddass brew I have ever had pouring out of a bar tap. What initially drew me in is its playful oasis for any landlubber in need of setting sail on a sea of droll and irreverent, yet patient and thoughtful service and chatter, you must surrender to this bar while strolling down Olive Ave. At first while looking up, I treaded water for a moment and then with little hesitation I hopped aboard ship. My only regret was not getting a chance to try their tacos, corn'asaurus' dogs (bodacious), chili options, and other gotta have soul food for those getting off work or recently scuttled. Captain Black's deck is renowned for good reason. It's immensity of size is often matched by the ridiculousness of events occurring upon it's beer-weathered planks. I've seen a man go from Pan to Hook in mere seconds (putting out a flaming food tray with his beer then tossing the empty glass towards the girl sitting at the table) and a tire change performed by strangers orchestrated by the deck-bound car owner, amongst other affairs befitting a location whose open spaces give one's capriciousness room to sprawl. Came here for happy hour on a Friday afternoon and had a pretty decent experience -- so here are my random observations, in no particular order: Seemed like they had a solid food menu, I think appetizers were $2 off during HH, but there wasn't much "substantial" food on it -- just like onion rings and tots and such. Possibly hot wings. Ended up getting the shrimp-and-fries entree ($8) which was alright (5 shrimp) though the fries were not crunchy enough. Pretty interested in trying the chicken and waffles ($9 I think). I had a good cider there ($4.50) and a standard rum and coke, and the staff was friendly enough though they were pretty busy. It was a pretty nice day out so there was no space on the patio, but we found some seating at the bar. The ambiance itself is a little divey (my vinyl bar stool had masking tape on it) BUT prices are fair and the music (mostly Top 40 music from the 2000s-present) was solid. It's a smaller venue so if you're coming with a big group, I recommend going early. I live nearby so I'll be back again. read more

I wanted to grab a simple beer, they told me wait 20 minutes as it was full. Stood outside and waited patiently while watching them let other people in who were in line after me. Then some guy said it'll be approximately another 30 minutes before they let me in. They had to let everyone else in before me. Love the late night happy hour (starts @ 10pm)! $6 Captain's tea and $3 deep fried mac and cheese. I went on a Friday night around 9pm and it was a bit hard to find, but it was nice and cozy inside. It wasn't too crowded, but filled up around 10, and then cleared out a little around 11:30. Don't expect table service, you have to go to the bar (I think this is better anyway, at least that way you're not waiting for someone). When you order food you get a little table tent with a number on it so that the server knows where to deliver your food. The number reminds me of Carl's Jr, and anything that reminds me of Carl's Jr is always good! :) read more

Last year if you had asked me about this place, I would have given it a 1 for service, and 4 for the rest. The past couple of weekends I have found myself basking in the sunshine on their oversized deck, and have to say, the people, location, food and drinks have all grown on me...so yes, yelpers, I'm giving them a 5! You just can't beat a place that has a great happy hour and more seating outside than in! This is the perfect summer spot, and with the large wine pours, it is one of the best places to sit until the sun goes down. read more

I sat at the bar and laughed out loud a few times at the the way the bartender greeted the old seamen and seawomen. + Affordable bar food: I ordered Onion Rings and the serving was HUGE. (and tasty!) + Somewhere between 3 and 6 TVs showing baseball on a Sunday afternoon. Not all the same game. Muy bueno. + About half the people in the bar were a little bit older (in their 50s-60s), and dressed up as pirates or maidens. Captain Blacks appears to be a great neighborhood bar: perfect for meeting a small group of people to have some drinks on Capital Hill before or after a more significant activity. Late night happy hours make me very happy, I like knowing I can go get a cheap drink after work. They are a fun bar, beautiful deck, awesome decor (totally simple pub), clean bathrooms (yay!) and pretty good eats! The drinks were tasty, liquored up arnie palmers and margaritas and i think i saw a mojito on that menu too. The food was tasty but I'll say that my waffle was a bit too crisp (as in a little scorched) for my liking, the deep fried mac and cheese was better then i expected and I loved teh deep fried okra which shocked me ccause i really don't like okra at all lol. I thought this place was great! I did eat on the patio, though, can't speak for inside. It was quite a bit noisy in there, plus it was one of those too-few-and-far-between gorgeous sunny days in the northwest. Food was tasty, love the big belgian style waffles. And I had a house made ginger ale/beer. Woo, it was spicy! I like a gingery beer, but this one I had to let the ice melt a bit, haha. Captain Blacks (Seattle) I am not sure if we are talking about the same Captain Blacks here, however, I saw this place in passing the last time I was in Seattle across from B&O coffee shop and was intrigued by the anchor in front of the shop. This time on our way to Devo, my best friend and the guy I am dating decided to have lunch here. It got 4.5 overall star reviews, therefore, I feel that I must be missing something here. We didn't do the drink thing as it was well before noon and decided to have something to eat. It was dead slow, it was just us three which was kind of nice 'cause this meant that we could sit in our pirate plush hats in ease (yes we dressed up for this place 'cause dressing up is fun). The menu had little choice, nothing that I could eat giving my culinary restrictions, however, settled for fries which were nicely spiced. My best friend had a country fried steak with poutine. He seemed happy with it but then again, he eats anything. The guy I am dating had chicken and waffle. He seemed happy but mentioned that it was nothing stellar. The service was meh, they weren't social and seemed like they could care less if we were there or not. I can't blame them considering that it was dead and they must have been bored. Dropped by and got a couple of drinks with friends for Halloween Night. The bouncer at the door was humorous in a dry way. For the occasion a slasher film was playing on all the TVs. It creeped me out so I focused in on the only corner of the room in my peripheral that didn't have a TV. It was like roadkill. My friends kept watching it and getting freaked out. I had my first Manny's lager here. A local beer of Seattle's. Very very very comparable to Anchor Steam. A local beer of San Francisco. I'm a fan. The best place for drunk eats!! Captain Black's satisfies your inebriated need for fried mac & cheese and bacon waffles (that's right! Bacon IN the waffle!) Because really, the only time you should be eating those types of foods is at 1 am after a couple of pitchers. The bar used to be a house and has a great back deck that overlooks the city. It's definitely a neighborhood spot, but is filled with nice, friendly neighborhood hipsters (not the bitchy, snotty ones). The one at the bar with the hobo beard recommended a can of Hamm's, which is now probably one of my favorite canned beers, right up there with Olympia. The bar has a great laid-back atmosphere--a nice break from the more raucous places in Pike/Pine. read more

Love this place. Super hip, but has a great Happy Hour and an excellent selection of beer/wine/liquor. In the summer the outdoor seating is perfect to check out a gorgeous view/soak up some sun. I see a lot of disappointing reviews! I didn't think Captain Blacks was awful! I thought it was a lot of fun. I went there with my friend and we sat in the back patio and enjoyed the weather and each others company! The food (Chicken and Waffles) was really delicious. I LOVE the fact that they gave me 5 different types of hot sauce to put on my food! Drinks were strong... so overall it was a good experience. My one thing.. which i seem to be very picky about.. was the wait time for our bill. I think I've made a conclusion.. that service on cap hill isn't that great, but the people are nice and the food was good! read more

I spent a late afternoon here with a few friends and ordered from their extremely impressive happy hour menu. I ordered a Po Boy w/chicken, some fried mac and cheese and some fried okra. The food was pretty good, but it was very apparent that it was all pre-prepared or frozen. I know it seems like I'm being picky, but when it comes to Southern style food, I expect everything to be fresh. That's how it's done in the South and in all fairness, that's how it should be done here. The Happy Hours specials were very impressive and the tap selection was excellent. I joined a friend for happy hour. I ordered the cod po'boy sandwich and a captain's tea. The sandwich was good, not great. The chicken was flavorful and the toppings were fresh, even the bread was tasty. I highly recommend the Aioli and Cajun Mustard--I think they give the sandwich a really good flavor. My only criticism is that I think they should ramp up the temperature of their fryer so their foods are crisper--especially for the fries. And above all else, hang out on the patio. read more

After a solid 2 hours at Half Price Books, we came across the placard for Captain Blacks in front of Stumbling Monk. It was happy hour and they had Po'Boys . . . I AM that easy. I had also run that day, so felt like a bit of fried tastiness was allowable. Since it was just after open the bar was empty with the exception of one other couple. It didn't take us long to decide, since the happy hour menu was priced to please. Two $6 sammies - one chicken & one portobello 'shroom Po' Boy - two $3 draft pints, please. I was expecting "happy hour portions", so was blown away by the the size of the sandwich and accompanying fries. The food was hot fresh, and the ingredients were crisp and flavorful. Service was solid, too. We will surely be back for the chicken and waffles, oyster po'boy, the spacious deck, and the $3 pints. read more

Captain Black's is a great place to take people out... so long as its before the bar rush. The space is limited and while the deck is very roomy the space inside the bar to get your drinks is not. Seating gets rough -- especially on the usual busy nights. Beer list is decent and the bar tenders do a good job at working with the small space that they have to keep the turnaround at the bar high. Make it in for some food and do an early happy hour here. Enjoy all of the fried deliciousness that they have to offer with some beer... and slide out the door before you end up with 4 pairs of elbows in your ribcage while the entire audience somehow gets captivated by Jersey Shore or some other awful junk playing on their TV's. read more

I've walked by Captain Blacks literally hundreds of times, and didn't stop in until just the other day. Why? I'm not sure. With the plethora of bars and restaurants in Capitol Hill, I hadn't had a reason to stop in until last week. While I didn't have anything to eat, the beer selection was good, and my friend's chicken and waffle looked good (although with a bit much on the syrup). The ambiance is the best part, really. The place reminds me of some of the smaller bars I used to frequent in Milwaukee. I love the fact that it's in an old house, and the dim lighting is really cool. I'll definitely be back! read more
