I like going to bars. I like to sit at the bar, have some whiskey and a cold beer, maybe some food that is good. I like to have stimulus around me that I can enjoy looking at or watching. I like it when the bartender is pleasant and easy to get along with. I don't mind when, weather permitting, there is the option of sitting outside, maybe even enjoying a smoke. I like when there is good music playing and not too loud. I do not like having to shout over music to be heard. You could get me to do stuff, weird stuff, if you put some fried okra in front of me to enjoy. I like a good pour and reasonable prices. I like bar stools that do not wobble. I read the reviews on the Oyster Po-Boy and was hoping for an incredible delight that would remind me of New Orleans or back in Little Rock at the Oyster Bar. But Meh, not even close. It took me a few minutes to figure out "Your on your own" and need to be able to take care of yourself. No table service and you go to the bar to get your drinks and make your food order. I'm not shy so that's not a big deal to me. But, if you're looking for to be serviced, you need to plan on taking your order and going to the bar to get your drinks. Of course, I ordered the $11 oyster po-boy and it was 4 oysters on a soft Wonderbread type hoagie roll with some shredded lettuce, tomatoes and chopped pickles + some fried french fries (the frozen / deep fried type). It was basically, just work cafeteria okay. That said, if it's a nice sunny day and you just want to drink, and drink, and drink and lounge outside on the deck. This could be a good place to hang out and after a few pitchers of beer or rum drinks the food might be pretty good. As for ambiance, remember the movie "Animal House"? In fact, that patio is the only reason I gave this review 2 stars. Everything else sucked. I'm only in my early 30s, but this place made me feel really geriatric. What the hell is wrong with today's youth!? I swear to God, I sat next to a table of total burn-outs here recently. I kept darting evil eyes at them to indicate my severe displeasure at their tasteless and racist jokes (think typical WASPs). But I think I can safely say that if you want to meet the only hetero douchebags in Capitol Hill, you can come here. My friend told me that he experienced the "most disgusting food of his entire life" here, so I'd say stay away from the food. Another pick of Seattle's quirks! Definite dive bar but with the guarantee of seating. Pirate/nautical theme totally fits with the Seattle scene. No need to worry about getting overrun by hipsters here. This bar is defiantly laid back. It reminds me of touring the more darker streets of Baton Rouge, LA. Mac n' Cheese, Gumbo, Rice n' Beans, Po' boys are just a few of its staples. Most of which I am dying to go back to try. I always feel that you cannot go wrong with serving really good southern food at a bar. You defiantly get the feel that this is a locals-only type of bar. The 'servers' or ppl who bring out the food always seem a lil confused about what goes where & more than once I was close to telling them where to put it but alas..I like it here. I had walked by this place many times, but never when it was open. So when I walked by and saw it was opened, I checked it out. From the outside it looks like a dilapidated run down house, the inside is not that much better. They also have outside patio both in the front and in the back. I would have liked to sit in the back but the umbrellas they have for the tables gave NO shade, so we sat out front. I only had a glass of white wine that was on the happy hour list. Well they did apologize for not taking the Puerto Rican ID through an Instagram post however the reasons they used were not accurate. The door man stated he knew it was a territory and that the state of Washington won't let him take the ID as valid. He then asked the bartenders and they told him it's his decision to make. So he kept pushing that the is ID is invalid. Here is a picture of the website for the Washington liquor board where it clearly states Us territory drivers licenses are valid. The man at the door just wanted to be this way and made people feel really bad as if they don't need any other reasons to pile on for feeling like second class citizens. He insisted that the patron go back and get his passport. His IS passport lol. Anyways the apology was more of a give grace to our ignorant worker that was fighting the logic and just exercising his power over the situation. Well, they were slim so a dear friend and I came here to get our comfort food on. It's not a large place by any means, there is a small inside bar with an outside and rooftop decks. And ordering food is simple, head to the bar to start a tab or pay all at once, snag a table if there are any and your food will arrive shortly afterward. If they are busy, you might want to send a scouting party to secure that table while waiting to place your order. During our visit, the weather was pleasant enough so we snagged a spot on the back deck with a lovely vantage point to people watch below. Our food arrived quickly: fried pickles with a spicy aioli and an order of fried okra. I enjoyed my chicken and waffle though I had to ask twice for butter that never arrived. My friend enjoyed her pickles and her Po'boy. I wished the okra wasn't frozen but it wasn't greasy. Parking can be tricky. It's the Hill, it's just the facts of life. No waiter service. There's a nice patio area both in the front (facing Belmont st) and back. During summer afternoons, the place gets pretty hot inside. I prefer sitting outside--but I highly recommend sitting in the patio that faces Belmont Street, since it gets more shade :) I've only had the mac and cheese here, and I'm not impressed. The cheese was very liquidy. Captain Blacks should've named theirs "Mac and Milk" :D Oh well, it's bar food, and I should've known better. There is a lot to like about this little 'hole-in-the-wall' on Capitol Hill. Located on a side street, it's easy to miss, but well worth taking the effort to find. The compact bar has a modest selection of beers on tap, but there was a well thought-out mix of microbrews & cheap beer to please all tastes. Two areas where Captain Black's stands out from the crowd is, as Yelper Corrina K. pointed out, a great 'house party' vibe (younger hipster crowd, but not the pretentious, 'too-cool-for-you' types), and a delightful menu that features yummy 'trailer park' cuisine, especially fried chicken & waffles (!). As counterintuitive as this entrée sounds, it works, and works very well indeed! The only potential downside is that this place may well be very crowded most of the time. I was there on a Tuesday evening, and it was pretty full. I can't imagine what it could be like on a nice Friday or Saturday evening! But don't let this discourage you; you really should go, if for no other reason, to try the chicken & waffles for yourself. read more

The place is a little hard to find, if you're not necessarily looking for it, and the two times I've been, had more locals and low-key patrons. +++ I've had three different bartenders: The first was so indifferent and slow to even greet me though he wasn't busy AT ALL and no one else was around. I had a beer. He did that fine. He seemed to warm up to me and my friend a bit. Second guy was SUPER nice. Kind of husky, maybe a beard? AND he made great drinks. He seemed to be the day/afternoon bartender as he went off shift around 7 or so. The drink he made me was great. Third guy was the bartender who took over from awesome bartender. He was much less friendly (and keep in mind, I'm just asking for a smile and to act like you WANT my business and tip), but saddest of all, the same drink I had just had -- and my friend's -- were terribly, just about undrinkably loaded with (homemade-seeming, nice touch!) sour mix. In hindsight, bartender 3 may have also been bartender 1. Different nights. The bar has -- no surprise, a nautical theme. On the surprise end, it also has really fun, black-painted, brightly graffittied bathrooms. They're really awesome. Two patios mean plenty of outdoor seating. The back patio has a peekaboo view. Perfect atmosphere if you just want to sit outside on a nice day and enjoy a drink. There's a patio out back which gets more sun and a patio out front which is a little more shaded. This place is pretty small so I wouldn't just assume that there will be many open tables, especially on a nice day. I got the Moscow mule and 2 chicken tacos and it was the perfect amount of food. Captain Blacks is for people with mediocre taste and too much money. An okay appetizer and sub par cocktail shouldn't set you back $20. Especially when the majority of the fare is deep fried low level pub grub, which is the antithesis of "fresh". I grew up in the south, so you're not going to throw some fried okra on the menu, the word "southern" on the sign and trick me into thinking you're the real deal. Captain Blacks and the outdoor patio :: Dragonfish Asian Cafe outdoor seating. Meaning, the food ranges from Meh to Fine, the drinks aren't that great, the Happy Hour is barely worth your time and they expect the gorgeous sunshine and a nice view will make up for all of these ills. Sadly, many people fall for this. I was out there today and as great as it was, my $8 mojito (which was watery, bitter, and poorly balanced), chair jockeying, and poorly managed service may as well have been a big rain cloud. Captain Blacks has no seating to speak of. Maybe it's too trendy and popular right now or the person who purchased the tables and chairs didn't understand square footage, but every time I've been here my party has been addressed with any of the following basically every 10-15 minutes: "Hey, are you using this chair?" "Oh, is anyone sitting here?" "Do you mind if I grab this seat?" "We need one more chair, are you guys using it?" Captain Blacks is a place for parties of 3 or less. Unless you get there super early, your entire party is there, and you're okay with throwing elbows and attitude to keep your chairs all night. Lastly, I'm okay without table service. I'm fine ordering from the bar. But if you're going to make me abandon my seat (at grave risk of it disappearing) to order at the bar, please make sure there is enough staff to make drinks and take orders. One bartender, one kitchen dude, and one busser at any given time means a 30 minute wait or more for drinks or food. Hell, my friend waited 15 minutes for a can of Rainier. Time for an update! I finally ordered the chicken and waffles! Curiously enough, their "fried chicken" was a boneless chicken breast. I loved it! It was well seasoned and cooked perfectly and the lack of bones made it really easy to cut into with a knife and fork. The waffles were good, but I don't really give a shit about waffles. The real bummer about this dish was the quantity of chicken I got: one piece of chicken smaller than my palm. For $11!! Seriously. I stared at my tiny portion in disbelief when it arrived, but it was no joke. Well, the joke was on me. I won't be ordering this again unless they add at least one more piece of chicken to the dish. I've also tried their gumbo and mac 'n cheese, which were good, but not great. And if it's a nice day out, don't even TRY to score a table on the patio. My 2nd time back and it was delightful. The clientele is a bit 'off my beaten path' but everyone seems friendly enough and we were able- through my powers of persuasion and aggressively sweet requests- to snag a table on the deck at 9pm on a weekend night. SCORE! My drink was good, the prices were great and overall, I like it here. The bathrooms, as other reviewers mention, are clean and well appointed, the staff is friendly and there's little to no hassles with any method of payment and/or special requests. We had just eaten this time so it was liquor only for me, but I ate last time after the Mustache Bash, and if I remember correctly, the cheese curds, were yum-yum. What a nice place to grab drinks after a hard day's work, or when not working at all. There are plenty of seats on the front and rear patio decks (probably 10-15 in the front, about 30 in the back) to take in the rare and elusive Seattle sun. And there's still plenty of seating indoors. The motif along the walls and ceiling is piracy during the Age of Sail - which I think they focused too much on the naval aspects, instead of piracy. But hey, I'm here for drinks, and to exercise my dauber reflexes; not to be concerned with interior decorating. Food and drinks are ordered at the bar (efficient setup), drinks will be served immediately, while food will be brought to your table. There's even Bingo night on Wednesdays, one of my favorite games to play over some drinks. All-in-all, service was efficient, décor is nice, and the atmosphere is relaxing. I've had some good experiences at Captain Black's, but when I went there last week, I was put off pretty badly, I can't see myself going back any time soon. We went for happy hour on Thursday, it was pretty quiet so there was just the bartender and a couple of people working in the kitchen. Our food came out relatively quickly, but the hot-wings I ordered were raw in the middle. Not just undercooked, but cold, raw chicken, which I couldn't tell from looking at the outside. Needless to say, I spat out the bite of half-chewed raw chicken that I had in my mouth, and took the tray of wings back up to the bar. The bartender apologised and said he would get some new wings for us. 5 minutes later, we got new wings. They were very dark, as the kitchen staff had just taken the wings, coated in hot-sauce, and thrown them back in the fryer. Not only did they re-fry my undercooked chicken (generally a bad idea, particularly coated in barbecue sauce!), but they re-fried the piece of chewed up, spat out raw chicken that was also on my tray when I took the wings back. When I then took the wings back for a second time, the guy from the kitchen was really rude to me and said "what, do you want me to make you some fresh ones?" I declined. read more
