Cappy's provides a welcome relief from the high prices on Shadyside's posh Walnut Street shopping and dining district. The food isn't great, but it isn't bad either, and the prices for food and drink won't break the bank. The menu also boasts quite a few options, and anyone looking for standard bar fare in this increasingly ritzy area may find a haven at Cappy's. This is a dive bar, it's not a college bar, but they can make some serious drinks. I love this place for karaoke and am embarrassed to confess to getting hammered accidentally (one drink at Cappy's is like 2.5 drinks at most other bars) and then trying to sing on multiple occasions. I never was too impressed with the food, but I never came here for the food. In fact, if you want good food within walking distance, go to some place like Harris Grill. But if you want good drinks and a good time in an environment that you can be laid back in, this is it. read more

This is a neighborhood Denny's with a bar. Small place and the meal was served on plastic plates and they used plastic mugs for coffee. At best, less than mediocre breakfast. Pamela's was closed and we were really hungry. Service was slow but they were nice about it. I don't plan to return and would choose an alternative. read more

Perhaps Cappy's just doesn't want to serve African American patrons or they simply can't handle breakfast business. Just sat there for 45 minutes waiting for a simple order of French toast that was never delivered. Their excuse was it is busy but if I am seated, there is no reason it should take that long to prepare the meal. Further, they were unapologetic when I complained. Horrible brunch experience. One weekend we were looking for a place to grab breakfast/brunch and Pamela's was SWAMPED. I wasn't familiar with any other place along Walnut that served breakfast, so we wandered in to Cappy's. Even though it's primary function is as a bar, the breakfast menu wasn't too shabby. I was here today for lunch. Our waitress was brand new and so we had to be a little patient, but she was very friendly and will catch on quickly. That said, I have no complaints about the service, but the food was not anything to write home about. I've eaten here a few times in the past, and I recommend going with one of their top sellers (noted on the menu) - they seem to be top sellers for a reason. Deviating from those doesn't pay off. In my opinion, the is a prime example of a bad Shadyside bar. It's right on Walnut, too small, always too crowded, and I feel like I'm a 21-yr old college student when I go out there. It's miserable to be there on the weekend when it's so crowded because it's such a small space. The only reason I'm giving this bar 2 instead of 1 star is because the karaoke on Fridays (if you can handle the people and the crowd) is pretty good- although there are half a dozen better places to karaoke in Pittsburgh. Furthermore, I have sat on the patio table for a nice chill happy hour once watching the craziness of Walnut Street happen in front of me- which was oddly relaxing. read more

Cappy's! We went here for karaoke night and stayed til close. We didn't try any food, but ordered plenty of drinks. We sat at a table and the waitress was super attentive and checked back often to see if we needed another drink. It was a full house, but not too full where you can't move. The Karaoke was good and you could tell there were some regulars hitting the stage. There were a few times they didn't have songs someone in our group requested, which we thought was a little weird because they were top 40. read more

Love sitting outside when the weather is nice. The food is hit or miss-- pizza is always good as are the basic breakfast items. Salad was pretty good for a bar salad! My misses include the omelet I had which was full of uncooked bell pepper and onion, and the Cajun rub wings which were super salty. The food was terrible. I would rather have eaten a McDonald's burger and fries. The fries, which are an up charge, tasted like they were store Ore-Ida brand and had not even been fully baked in an oven or possibly just microwaved. Came here for karaoke a few times. It's a dive bar with a bit of an older crowd, but there are some solid singers out there! My group of friends managed to sing a song or 2, but had to wait around for a while before we had the chance. The place gets really crowded and you have to get there early (or get lucky) in order to get a seat. Pushing your way up to the bar can be kind of crazy. Drinks are reasonably priced and pretty much what you expect in Shadyside. read more

I'd give this joint zero stars if it was possible. This is the worst spot on Walnut St! I'm not even sure where to start. The bar is small and overpriced. I live in walking distance from Cappy's and was eager to try it. I notice it does a brisk business so I figured the food would be decent. My husband and I went one night in August (full disclosure: we had been working on our house all day, so we were starving and disoriented by the heat, and I was about 9 weeks pregnant and experiencing a persistent low-grade nausea all day). On this particular moment in my pregnancy I was violently craving a Caesar salad. I scoured the internet for places on Walnut and Ellsworth that *might* offer a decent Caesar, couldn't really determine which would be best, and we finally decided on Cappy's. Honestly? This was the worst - I mean aboslute worst! - excuse for a Caesar salad that I have ever encountered. It was made with iceberg lettuce (!?) and the dressing was more like a bottled light Italian than a creamy Caesar. It was terrible! My husband got a Rachel sandwich - the turkey version of a reuben - and he also said it was mediocre. I think this would be a fun place to go back to to have a couple of beers while sitting outside. But in the future I will stay away from the food. I don't think I would even try an appetizer next time. read more

My Mum came into town and wanted to go to Cappys. She heard about it from someone on facebook. We went right after it opened so we were the only ones in there. My Mum got some kind of Mexican soup and she loved it. I ordered the turkey pesto hoagie and Mum got a BBQ chicken wrap. We split our sandwiches half-and-half. I ended up enjoying the BBQ chicken wrap more than my hoagie. Overall lunch was pretty good and not to bad priced. We want to go back again to try some other choices they had on the menu. read more

Closest you will get to a dive bar in Shadyside. I love this place so much. My girlfriend and I frequently come in for Brunch on Sunday and they are very reasonably priced and it's not usually too crowded. We also go in fairly often to drink on the weekends. It gets really crowded on Fridays for Karaoke but its usually a nice crowd for Saturday. They have good food at a great price and everything is baked. We also love to go for dinner during the week when it is nice out and sit outside and people watch on Walnut. The employees are very friendly and laid back. It's a great place for a Shadyside resident go to bar. It's certainly mine! read more

It is a restaurant with a great bar scene. Yelp is viewed by so many people and these photos are totally misleading. SO CAN SOMEONE AT YELP PLEASE TAKE THEM DOWN! This is a respectable establishment in PITTSBURGH. Not a bar on the beach for seafood. Not a tacky nightclub. Cappy's is a great spot on Walnut for a tasty meal or a few drinks (great price-wise in comparison to some other bars on the street). The service is consistently friendly and it's a great atmosphere. I love Taco Tuesday ($1.5 tacos and $3 mexi beers!) and frequent their trivia night on Wednesdays. It gets totally packed on trivia night though, so get there early for a table. Hands-down my favorite bar in all of Shadyside. I'm sick of the overly-crowded, jam-packed "party" bars. Cappy's is chill, down-to-earth, has its groups of regulars, and has the best trivia in Pittsburgh (with awesome drink specials during it, too). I've hung out with Mayor Peduto here plenty of times, so if he's coming here then you know it's good! Great, great service and the food is excellent (jalapeno wrap is KILLER).
