Awesome bbq! Very nice workers! The sides are so goood Not the top of the top but its definitely an above average place in the bay area

Great BBQ! So happy I finally tried this spot in Castro Valley. Big restaurant with both indoor and outdoor seating. Got a huge meat platter because I wanted to try everything along with the green salad. The green salad is large and fresh. I absolutely love the tri tip and ribs here and can't wait to come back for more!! The tri tip is the best I've had-tender, lean well seasoned and cooked to a perfect medium rare. The ribs were delicious-tender but still held their shape. The pulled pork was great in that it's big chunks of meat and it's left as is so I could add my own amount of bbq sauce. I love their spicy bbq sauce and need to buy a bottle in my next visit. Service is fast and friendly. Highly recommend and I can't wait to go back.

If you know me, you know BBQ is at the top of my favorite foods! So when it comes to trying out new BBQ places, I'm always a little nervous. This place was close to where we were going out for a boat ride and got good reviews so I was down. I got a brisket sandwich and it did not disappoint. Also they have craft sodas on tap and I got pineapple cream and it was soooo good. The portions are good and their bbq is solid. The service is good overall, friendly. There's even a cute outdoor area to dine at.

Supposedly "two" orders fries. Brisket portion was only 3 slices.

Extremely Disappointed -- $30 for a "Large" That Felt Anything But Large I've been to Canyons BBQ many times and have supported this business repeatedly. Unfortunately, my visit on Sunday, 8/09/2026, was the last. I paid $30 for a "large" meal, and even left an additional cash tip. What I received was an embarrassingly small portion for that price. The fries were spread across the plate in a way that seemed designed to make the serving look more substantial than it actually was. I understand food costs are high. I understand meat is expensive. What I don't understand is charging $30 for a "large" meal and leaving a longtime customer feeling like they were taken advantage of. Watching the cook behind the counter scantily arrange the food onto the plates as orders were being prepared should have been my warning sign. Unfortunately, I had already paid. This isn't about expecting an enormous amount of food. It's about expecting a fair and honest portion for the price being charged. When I spend $30 on a meal, I shouldn't walk away wondering why I feel like I got so little for my money. After being a repeat customer, I have to say this experience was incredibly disappointing. The worst part wasn't the portion itself--it was the feeling that the value simply wasn't there. So, Canyons BBQ, congratulations. You've lost a customer who had been willing to come back and spend money with you. I won't be returning. I'll be taking my business to Back Forty from now on. At a $30 plus tip meal, customers deserve better than a plate that leaves them feeling shortchanged. That's not a large meal. That's a large disappointment.

I had a really great experience my first time here at canyons. I tried the three way combo The bbq was pretty solid - ribs and burnt ends were great but wasn't exactly impressed with the trip tip. A bit chewy and tough but not terrible. Loved the beans! Would pass on the Mac and cheese! Oh the garlic bread is amazing! I must add. What I think made the experience great was the staff, the ambiance and my encounter with the staff member Deb. She was so sweet and kind and shared a little about her music journey with me which was really touching. Definitely made the experience that much better. Location was extremely clean, has ample seating inside or outside and overall just a relaxed vibe for a 2pm on a Thursday. Would probably visit again if I'm in the area but maybe try a sandwich.

GREAT SMOKE BBQ! You can smell this place from a mile away. Been here multiple times finally got the chance to try their breakfast items. I ordered 2 tacos and 1 breakfast sandwich. Tacos was packed with meat and a nice runny over easy egg. The breakfast sandwich did lack meat though compared to the taco imo. Breakfadt Taco 5/5 Breakfast sandwich 4/5 Service 5/5

This establishment offers white mac n cheese. I didn't know how to feel about that but tbh the mac n cheese is so much better than the potato salad. I really tried to like the ps but I didn't get what they were going for. Maybe I'm just old school and prefer a yellow ps with pickle and eggs but for me personally this ps is not it. I ordered 3 meat plate Chicken, pork ribs and tri-tip. The chicken melted in your mouth, with beautiful delicious skin that was crisp. Pork ribs were well seasoned and again melted in your mouth. The tri-tip was some great stuff! Thick but soft and loaded with flavor, I really enjoyed it. It was served with cornbread which was unlike any other cornbread I've had and some honey on it took it to another level. Both plates came with pickled chiles, cucumber and onion which were delicious! They offer variety of beer flavors but I was sober so I took the soda. Restrooms are really clean but the wash hands area is on the outside . I would give this place a solid 8 1/2 /10 I didn't taste much difference between reg bbq sauce and hot bbq sauce but it is great.

Yummy meat, mediocre sides, good value

This place is pretty good and the baby back ribs in particular are better than I have had in years. Service a little lacking, for example, no questions about fatty or lean brisket or corn bread or garlic bread. Ordered a three meat plate with plenty of leftovers. Cornbread is kind of flat and used sponge- like ( not spongy and springy but dehydrated sponge) . The smoked meats are spectacular and it makes this a great bbq spot. Sides are underwhelming. It is a great spot for groups.

So I have to say that Canyons BBQ breakfast is definitely a secret delicious thing to get. They are right next to Philz, grab a coffee and then get a breakfast taco. They were AMAZING. As well as the breakfast sandwiches. Canyons BBQ meat is always delicious and you can't really go wrong with anything you get Unfortunately, I'm always disappointed with their sides. I can't seem to find a side dish that I think tastes good. I would only come for the meats and skip the sides.

Just some brisket and ribs. Just move along now, try not to slobber over your phone

If you're taking Ozempic or some kind of GLP-1, don't come here. It ain't going to work son. You're going to eat a pound of brisket, a pound of ribs and a pound of burnt ends finish it off with two sides of mac and beans. You'll burp a little bit then you'll look at the menu again for seconds

Amazing service, Debbie was so sweet and helpful! Food was excellent and fresh, great sides and the ribs and cole slaw and tri tip were excellent too! Definite winner! Great bread pudding!

Friendly counter staff. Food came fast but it was obviously slow cook. Good vibe from the music to the decor. The food was excellent! Eat here!

Came here on a weekday night, wasn't too busy. This is CV's best BBQ joint and it is phenomenal. I ordered a 2 meat combo brisket and pork ribs with mac n cheese, cold slaw, cornbread. Come early and hungry if you want certain selections of meats and cuts!

I love the New Orleans food scene and therefore had a pretty high bar for Cajun food outside of Louisiana. I came in a little hesitant because I've been disappointed too many times by the options we have in the bay for Cajun food. But after I opened the box and took my first bite of that blackened shrimp Po Boy I could've sworn I thought I was sitting in the French Quarter again. The nice young lady that took my order recommended the blackened shrimp as an underrated choice on the po boys so I had to try it out. I came stuffed with a Red wine coleslaw, tomatoes, pickle slices and a drizzle of their special sauce (that I can only describe as spicy cajun mayo). 12/10 and I'm not exaggerating I also had a side (and when I say side take it with a grain of salt cause this feeds like 3 people for being a side) of the fresh Crab fries. Not overdone with the ingredients yet what a powerful hit of flavor, the Cajun seasoning usually comes out a bit salty on fries but these guys figured out how to balance it with the fresh shredded crab on top, garnished off with some green onion and more special sauce, this thing made me look around the room to see if anyone else was reacting like this over the food. (And they were! People were sitting there talking about "last time I tried ___ and ___ and it was fire") In the end I saw a guy that looked very proud to be there and was helping around the place while running back to his computer, that was Brett, the owner. I had to go and shake the man's hand and pick his mind a bit. He's a born and raised in New Orleans guy and you could tell by his kindness and southern hospitality. (Dude gave me a delicious carrot cake to go) Unfortunately in the end I had to walk back out into the reminder that I was in Castro valley and not New Orleans but for minute I was able to remember everything that had previously experienced from my trips there and that's what a great meal should do for you. His city should be proud of what he created here. I will absolutely be back to work my way through the full menu and add more pics to this review.

No complaints here since I got another side. Everything was delicious. The ribs were tender. I also loved their BBQ sauce. The Dr. Pepper wasn't peppering.....if you know you know, it just didnt taste strong, but I did enjoy that the drink was ice cold. They dont have coke, but serve pepsi products. I never had Mac and Cheese like that, but since I love Mac and Cheese and I love corn so it was hit in my world. Portions are huge and I had to take some food home. Prices seem comparable to other places that serve BBQ. Lots of seating areas and I can see on special occasions or on the weekends, this place could get packed. Plenty of parking. I'm gonna check with my NorCal moots about this but sucks if that's true. I was going to comment on how this is one of few bastions of affordable, slightly more unique food in the bay area, but I guess that's not the case. I'm spoiled by having a Dollar Hits in SoCal literally down the street from me so I can't say this place compares, but it's at least an option for NorCal, you know? This definitely used to be another restaurant, but then retrofitted to be a grill. Super large grill in the middle for everyone to communally cook at indoors. This is a good combination between the outdoors grill it yourself and the indoors seating of both the SoCal Dollar Hits, so I thought that was nice. They have all the classics here, isaw (sometimes Dollar Hits doesn't have this unless you request -it's chicken intestines), large intestines, chicken skin, kwek kwek (battered quail eggs), and Tender Juicy bright red filipino hot dogs (a must). You can also order a side of rice and the sauces were self serve (made it a bit sticky). It gets a bit smoky in there even with the fans, but overall had an enjoyable time the time when I did visit.

I truly believe that there is potential here, but a lot of things would have to change. When you walk in, BBQ is not the first thing you smell. I'm the type that if you can smell the BBQ when you get out of the car, it's probably about to be pretty dang good. I got all the way into the restaurant and it was just a vague smell... not necessarily bad, but not necessarily food, either. * The Mac n' Cheese recipe needs to be re-thought and revised. It was watery, tasteless and not what you would expect from a black owned business. * The cornbread is expensive and not given as sidecar to your sides. I'd rather pay a little more for food overall when I buy a plate and get cornbread than have to ask for and purchase a side of cornbread. As far as taste, if I wasn't eating it with the greens, it wouldn't have been very good standalone. * I had the rib plate.... No rub in sight, not even the slightest hint of salt and pepper coating. It was almost like the ribs go straight from package to smoker, no process in between. They seem to take the angle of drowning them in sauce, which is overly tangy seems like a bulk purchase sauce, rather than a house made sauce. BBQ sauce is too simple to make to not hone in on your own sauce recipe. The ladies who plate the food chop the ribs in half as a means to fit them into the carton, but to be honest, I don't wanna see or taste pigs marrow when I'm eating my ribs. Ribs were also very dry and over-charred... a few pieces. * The greens were the best thing on the whole plate to be honest. * Lastly, the hot sauce packets were puffy and swollen, which is never a good sign. Never seen that before until I came here. Also, I asked for extra BBQ sauce and was told that would be an extra charge..... this was already a tip off that they don't get a lot of business and now they're at the "nickels & dimes" point of their day-to-day operations. All in all, it just seems like the labor of love has been lost on this place, as it was recommended to me by someone who says it was good years ago. While that might be true, it seems the family has gotten too comfortable with their neighborhood regulars to keep the doors open and the quality is slipping as the month and years pass. If you're reading this as the owner, I hope this is a motivator for you to restructure and re-brand so that you become a "line out the door" business, because in today's climate, it only takes one influencer to enter your doors and call your food "certified" or "trash" for YouTube, IG, Twitch etc.. Be brave and make changes.

I was staying around the corner so it wasn't too much trouble for me to go pickup my food but I was already comfortable at home... so to make a long story short... the worker (I think maybe the owner not sure) she ended up accommodating my meal that the door dasher took and didn't make me pay again and even gave me some extra corn bread for the inconvenience. The worker that day was super sweet and I really appreciate good customer service now a days. A little kindness can make someone's day !! The food: corn bread 10/10, Mac n cheese 3/10 (it was very watery and not much flavor) hot links 6/10 they have a weird texture I think because they are home made... but the overall taste was decent... also in there defense I got the last batch of the day... I went when they were 10 minutes to closing... banana pudding 4/10 basic banana pudding nothing special

a chicken katsu that measures out to two meals, great deal alert!…read more so I have been here many times, tried the chicken katsu, hawaiian bbq chicken, aloha bbq chicken, and white island fish, which is about half the menu, and always great and always filling so a chicken katsu comes with two scoops of rice, one scoop of mac salad, a small bed of cabbage, some steamed brocolli, and three crispy and juicy pieces of chicken. There are two dipping sauces, a plum based katsu sauce, and a soy sauce hybrid. The katsu sauce has a little bit of heat, but mild enough that my SO whom normally does not eat any spicy, can handle it. Which ever combo or item you pick, it's outstanding. Because the items have a lot of food, I usually skip the appetizers. So for either lunch or dinner, you have two meals out of any items. Service is great, I usually order on the phone and pick it up, but ordering in person or online is fast, staff is great and friendly. the decor is simple and the place is very clean. There are about seven tables and parking can be limited when the place is busy.

Also had the hamburger steak lots of rice underneath the patties and not enough gravy. The beef patties were large but it no beef flavor; more breadcrumbs. Service was very nice the girl at the counter was cordial. The ambience was that of a cafeteria; a few tables white paint. I was hoping the food would make up for sparseness; I will try it again maybe different choices and maybe a better review.
