This place so reminds me of like an old school Reno restaurant, the vibe, the woodsy look, the smell, the people that dine here and the staff. The staff seems to have been here for a while, liking their job. The place is clean and huge. Great for big groups. No need for a time limit. Good for a birthday or long hang out. It's only missing the slot machines! Haha The food is American dishes like steak with mashed potatoes, sandwiches, salad and pies. They also have Mac & cheese, some Italian or Mexican dishes. Harry's Hofbrau is a classic. It's like stepping into a time warp in the best way possible (think big fireplace, dark wood, booths). The staff is so nice, and of course the food is delicious. Consistent and exactly what you want, every time. The menu is actually pretty big, and they have specials for each day of the weekend (Fridays are tri-tip days). I recommend the tri tip sandwich or the turkey open face sandwich. My go to sides are macaroni salad, mashed potatoes, and mac n cheese. The guy carving the meat will hook you up with a generous stack of meat, then the helpers will get the sides and then you pay, find a table and get after it. I've seen this place so many times and finally got around to trying it with the family. First impression was how big it is. We came around 4:30pm and it was a little busy, but the line moved fast. The menu and daily specials made ordering easy, and the staff were very friendly and helpful since it was our first visit. Seniors and kids pay less. I went with the roasted chicken and pastrami with mashed potatoes and brown gravy, plus a Caesar salad. The dinner roll with butter is amazing! Everything was satisfying. The vibe was calm and not too loud, which made it easy to relax with the family and enjoy the meal. We were all full and happy, and I didn't even have room for dessert (chocolate cake next time!). Came a couple hours before closing (11pm) on a weekend. Wasn't busy, but still a good amount of patrons dining. It was my first time eating there besides attending a Paint Night event years ago. It's spacious with lots of booths and tables, along with a bar area that we didn't get to check out. But since they live in Union City/San Leandro, we came here instead. Same great food. We ordered their Saturday Specials, 10 oz prime rib $29 x2 and a turkey enchilada $16. Everyone here is super nice. We had a small child with us and a staff person helped us carry a tray to our table. As for the food, it was a lot. The prime rib was served medium rare with au jus. This was delicious with the herb crust. My friend liked her turkey enchilada $16 and would get it again. Somehow we still had room for some strawberry shortcake for to-go. My friend lined again at 7pm at which point wrapped around 2x. When he finally got to the cashier, she said next time, just come to the cashier if he was ordering dessert. Before going, I had looked them up on Yelp and saw that the reviews were overall pretty good, so I was excited to try it. The food was honestly excellent and would have made this a 5-star review on its own. I ordered the Prime Rib, and it was amazing -- flavorful, juicy, and cooked to perfection. I requested the au jus on the side, which was a great choice. For my sides, I had the red potatoes and red beans, and the beans were especially impressive with a delicious BBQ smoky flavor. I also had a Caesar salad and a roll, which completed the meal nicely. I also went to the bar and had a Big Daddy IPA, which paired really well with the prime rib. We were able to get a booth and enjoy our meal comfortably. The ambiance was great -- well-lit, relaxed, and the soft background music made the experience enjoyable. The other members of the staff were fantastic and helped make the visit feel welcoming. Unfortunately, the cashier experience is what brought this review down to 3 stars. When the topic of a senior discount came up, Clerk Wendy abruptly and rudely stated there was no senior discount. The response felt unnecessary and unprofessional, especially after an otherwise great meal and great service from the rest of the team. The disappointing part is that this could have easily been a 5-star experience. The food was excellent, the atmosphere was comfortable, and the rest of the staff were great. But the cashier is the last person customers interact with before leaving, and in this case, it left the wrong final impression. You have the wrong person making the last impression on your business. I would still return for the food, especially the prime rib and sides, but I hope management addresses the customer service issue at checkout. read more

I've been a fan of Harry's for many years and have been remiss in giving them a Yelp! review! My dad worked at a Hof Brau back in the day called Dahlkes, so there's a special place in my heart from these eateries. My community service organization often had lunch or dinner meetings. What's great is you get to order what you want and aren't at the mercy of others. They even had nice areas set away from the general crowd so we could actually conduct a meeting. I generally get the turkey wing meal because I think it's the best value. It comes with stuffing and gravy and who doesn't love that?! I had the prime rib dinner Saturday night and I doubt I'd do that again. It was medium cooked and dry. But overall I like coming here for this old school establishment. This was my first visit to this Harry's. (I've been to the one in Redwood City years ago). The theme inside has a chill vibe to it. It's dark and relaxing. The decor takes me back to the 80's. I got a kick out of the fake turkey rotisserie next to one of the entrance doors. You're served cafeteria style. I read over the menu before my visit, so I knew what I wanted and was ready. I got the roast beef with a side of mash and gravy & stuffing. Then I added a side of mac and cheese and a slice of carrot cake - to go. The servers will ask what you want and if you'd like anything else. There is a lot of food to choose from. I went around 2 pm on a Wednesday and the place was busy. I could only imagine a Friday or weekend. I did notice that many of the customer base was the much older people. Which is fine with me, they're a relaxed crowd. My roast beef was fresh and sliced when I had ordered it. Got a scoop of stuffing and mash with gravy poured on top of the potatoes and stuffing. Now I can tell they use real potatoes. The consistency and that I bit into some chunks gave it away. Stuffing was soft and flavorful. Mac & cheese was soft and cheesy. I had plenty of leftover for lunch tomorrow. The carrot cake was yum! I've been to Harry's Hofbrau many times since moving to the East Bay. I remember there used to be one in San Jose, which I only visited once, but now it's just this location and the one in Redwood City. My partner and I come here whenever we're in the mood for classic all American comfort food. I like that they offer different specials depending on the day, but they also have a regular menu you can always count on. I usually get the turkey wings, but if they're out, I go for the rotisserie chicken. The food isn't anything mind blowing, but it's comforting and satisfying. For sides, I usually get the mac and cheese, which I think is pretty good. One side I would definitely skip is the stuffing. It's worse than Stove Top, which I actually don't mind, but Harry's version is really gummy and mushy. On a more positive note, I recently tried the Asian salad as a side and it was surprisingly good. They give you a choice of a white or wheat roll. Go for the wheat. It has everything but the bagel seasoning on top and it's actually really tasty. We usually come here when my in laws are visiting since they like the senior menu. This place popped up so I knew I needed to stop by. We stopped by around 1:30pm on a Saturday and they already had the prime rib available. The food at Harry's has never been better than right now. As a kid, my family would take my siblings and I to this location periodically as it provided a decent amount of food for a smaller budget. The he thing that's good out though was the flavor just wasn't all there. Fast forward over a decade later, the place still provides generous portions for a great price but this time each item is loaded with flavor. My tri tip was cooked and seasoned perfectly. The mashed potatoes were also super creamy. The fruit salad one of my family member's ordered was just the right amount of sweet, and the other items my party had were met with great satisfaction. I what's important to note is that the service is essentially minimal aside from cleaning up. You have to go to the front where you pay to get a refill on your drink but what's great is that, that is a separate line from those who are ordering. From what I could tell, most people here tend to be regulars and it's for good reason. My husband found out about this place online and we wished we had come earlier! From what it sounds like with my friends, this is a staple and gem of a restaurant in the community for years! We came during the Christmas season and the restaurant was decorated beautifully. It had a homey feeling with all the Christmas lights. Parking was pretty easy, plenty of parking spots that wrap around and the back of the restaurant. It's a cafeteria style dining establishment so they don't even expect tips. I really enjoyed seeing the food in front to choose and the line moved so quickly. I ordered the roast beef with the mac and cheese side. For lunch I picked the Reuben Sandwich on Rye Bread and a German Potato Salad. The food was tasty, I prefer my Reuben sandwich to have more of a shredded and softer meat. The potato salad was not the same I had in Germany but it was good. The place is great for small groups (2-6 people) because there's a variety of of food to pick from and each person can pay for their own order.
