We saw a street parking as soon as we turn, and just parked even though it was 1000 ft away. The drink/cocktail list is vast, but we are not much of a cocktail drinker and not usually drink during lunch, but I saw Matcha Sharka being ordered a lot and the other seemingly popular drink was this lavender drink. If you are a cocktail drinker during lunch, do check them out. We ordered 4 shareable items: * Savoy Donuts - 5 stars - fluffy and yummy, not greasy at all * Focaccia w/ Meyer Lemon and Garlic Confit - 4.5 stars - wonderful texture, did not taste the garlic much but the lemon was really good add. * Grilled Beef and Pork Chipolata - 4 stars - I think the star was the dressing. The meat itself was just okay. * Rice Vermicelli Bowl - 4.5 stars - not sure why it is called a bowl when it was served more in a plate. This is the fusion take on the Vietnamese dish with different dressing. We selected the Galangal Pork, which I did not like as much compared to the usual Vietnamese ones with Lemon Grass. There is a choice to select Lemongrass chicken instead, so you might want to try that. The pork tasted "porky" despite it was thinly cut. I was hoping to try dessert, but we were full so we did not do that. Next time. The restaurant is nicely set, and you can select indoor or outdoor seating. This was a delightful meal. It had everything, the relaxing ambiance, the flavorful dishes, and great drinks. Oh not to mention, our waitress was delightful! This spot is a little hidden, but once you go inside, it is its own little oasis. Small and intimate, you know the dishes are made fresh. Every time we visit this restaurant, we've always enjoyed our meals. We arrived at 6 PM without a reservation and were able to get a table since a couple were still available. However, after 6:30 PM, especially on weekends, it becomes difficult to find seating, so I'd recommend making a reservation in advance. We ordered our usual, Focaccia bread and the beetroot salad, which, as always, were absolutely 10/10. This time, we also tried the Madras coconut curry with vegetables. It wasn't overly sweet and had just the right amount of spice, which we really loved. The vegetables were perfectly cooked with a nice crunch. For dessert, we had the Lebane mousse, which was delicious and a perfect way to end the meal. As you walked in the little gate, then through the outdoor seating area to the main restaurant, a full bar awaits you! We were greeted by the friendly servers. We had an 11:30am reservation and the place was fairly quiet. It got busier not long after that. Ok so the food... it was family-style concept so that was great because we got to try different things! Everything we had was excellent and scrumptious! Both the oysters on the half shell and grilled oysters were fresh and smooth. The prepared toppings were very flavorful and complemented the oysters very well. The dipping sauces for the light and crispy tissue bread and the tender and savory grilled galangal pork skewers were delectable! The ultra-fresh halibut tartare was very well prepared and seasoned. The perfectly grilled rockfish with the savory broth was delicious! The fresh mussels in green curry (subtle, light, and yet deep umami) sauce was mouthwatering. Savory donuts were decent, the sauces were good though. Tissue bread was true to its namesake and was so thin you could barely taste it. Beets salad was good- salty, earthy and delicious. Grit cakes with honey were the star of the show! Crunchy, salty, golden outside with a tender inside. Yum! Mushroom fritters were tasty, but not too memorable. Tofu and beef banh mi's were bland, pork belly sandwich had good flavor and a nice touch with the quail eggs. Beef vermicelli bowl was okay. The mussels were delicious. The sweet crepe was just well...sweet. It tasted like sugar with a bit of lemon and that's about it. The ordering system is rough. It's unnecessarily complicated. You scan the QR code and submit your order, you could in theory do it all without a server. But in practice, and if you're with a big group, it's a mess. We had questions and wanted recommendations and then we all kept cross checking if we had ordered, was it on bill? Multiples? Did we double order? I'm a fan and didn't know I'd be when I first came. I love their lemon ricotta donuts and their beef with vermicelli noodles the most. The lemon ricotta donuts are perfectly describe as savory while the beef & noodles pair perfectly here. My brother first suggested we eat here 4 years ago and a I've been back so many more times. Being a creature of habit when I find food/things I like I'm coming back for more at all times. The place is well landscaped with beautiful greenery and indoor/outdoor seating available. It's not a large space so it doesn't get crowded while eating. They have two different menus for 2 different times of the day and each have varying items. The menu isn't very expansive, but very well put together with delicious items. Check the menu and be sure there's something you'd try. I would recommend this place for anyone. read more

Top hatters is a contemporary Vietnamese restaurant that offers seafood and pork dishes that are rooted in traditional Vietnamese dishes but have a twist. We came to top hatters for dinner on a Saturday evening and was able to snag a reservation on Open Table. The restaurants location is surprisingly on the corner of a pretty residential area. There is no designated parking lot so we parked in the street and were able to find parking pretty easily. The staff is really wonderful they were able to help answer all of our questions and help with allergies at our table. It might be because I'm Vietnamese but I personally wasn't impressed with the food. A lot of the items were one note in flavor heavily relying on fish sauce to be the base of flavor. I think the best bite of the night was the chanterelle mushrooms, it felt the most unique and every bite left me craving for more. The quality of the ingredients in all of the dishes are really fresh. I'm really glad I came to try it out but I will likely not be coming back due to the price of the dishes. read more

Came here for a group birthday dinner and was blown away! We sat outside on a cold evening but the heaters kept us toasty. I SO appreciate our servers for working with our party of 8 as we decided what to order. I personally did not get a drink, but my friends enjoyed theirs! The small plates here were all delicious. We chose this restaurant for its good reviews and location. It was on a Sunday so I made reservations although the restaurant was pretty empty when we arrived at 11:30 AM. We started out with drinks and appetizers. The ube cream soda was refreshing. It wasn't very sweet (which is good) and had the hint of ube. The Bloody Mary was in a lowball glass. For $18, I was expecting a bit more! Nonetheless, it was made well. We had spring rolls, tissue bread, and lion's mane fritters for appetizers. They were all really good. We thought about ordering another tissue bread but I'm glad we didn't. For entrees, we had the eggplant salad and rolled pork belly. Both were also cooked very well and were delicious. Had this place on my list for years and finally got the chance to try it for lunch today. We came with a group of 8 and shared dishes family style (recommended here). There were a variety of dishes ranging from light bites to large meat dishes. Everything we ordered was delicious, but some stand outs were the tissue bread, grilled oysters, and rock cod. Delightful textures and flavors with every bite. The beverages were good too; we tried a variety of coffees since it was earlier in the day. I really enjoyed my egg custard coffee; it was smooth and sweet without being overly sweet. The custard foam was light and melted smoothly in. Service was quick and friendly. You can order via QR code but since we had a large group they accommodated us by taking our order in person. Overall this is well worth a visit to San Leandro to try some interesting Asian fusion fare or have some coffee or tea with friends. read more

We came here, back in 2021 and had lunch a lovely lunch that we came back! Plenty of street parking in the area. The space is still inviting and aesthetically appealing. Check out the bar tile work. So pretty! But it ends there. It might be a place for us to go to for a drink but eat else where. Lots of dining options in the courtyard and inside as well. However, the food isn't as good as we remember. The oysters on half shell were fresh and delicious. They're $4 each. The pork dumplings were good, the fritters were good. The mussels were fine too but nothing we ate were amazing. We ordered two desserts: a fried sesame, mochi, and lemon ricotta donuts. They were okay too but nothing was special. The service was fine! Location- this is located right next to the 580 free way. It's on a corner next to a neighborhood. Parking will be a bit tough in front but when you drive into the neighborhood there's more parking. They have indoor and outdoor seating which is great. The outdoor lighting is so cute I love how cozy it is. Food- OMG LET ME SAY THAT THIS IS FINE DINING!!! No seriously it is lol but everything literally taste like it was made from scratch. The bread was so soft and buttery. The pork belly fell off the bone if it could the wine selection was elite and the mussels were just cooked soo soooo right. I am definitely coming back here again. The staff here is extremely attentive and check on you almost every 5-10 mins so you are not missed. I will say it's pricey but this is worth the cost. I would pick this over a steak house honestly. We found this by watching Check Please. We were visiting the Oakland Zoo, and wanted to try out a restaurant nearby, and this was a great solution, as it was only about a 5 min drive from the zoo! So perfect. We could not get a reservation for indoor for lunch though; however, there were plenty for outdoor seating. When we got there, there were plenty of tables available inside. We asked the host if we could sit inside instead, he said no, everything was booked out. Really? We sat down outdoors, had to order from a QR code. I hate ordering from a QR code, this means that we don't really have a waiter....it's just someone delivering food to us. In my opinion that's just lazy service. Anyway, I ordered the Banh Mi with the Viet Pork Ham. I really wanted to like my Banh Mi, but the bread was a little too thick, and there was wayyyyy too much sauce. It just overpowered the Banh Mi and got quite messy. Not only that, I wasn't full after, and the Banh Mi was $14. My husband got the Rice Vermicelli Noodle Bowl with the Pork, which was pretty tasty. However, like my dish, it was quite small. Both dishes seemed like appetizer portions vs. actual lunch entrees. Good thing we ordered the Seared Rice Cake to share (lap cheurng sausage, fried shallots, pork and shrimp cotton, scallion oil, pickles) - again, a good dish, but definitely an appetizer portion, for $18!!! We were definitely seeing an unfortunate pattern here. He also got the Wide Awake Cocktail, which was essentially a Espresso Martini variation. This was good, but I really could not justify it being $18. Don't get me wrong, some cocktails are completely worth the price (Trick Dog, True Laurel, PCH), but this wasn't one of them. Going back to the service, there was just the host/waiter bussing food and bringing people to their tables, and one other busboy on the floor. They were so busy. They've really maximized their employees by taking advantage of the QR code ordering....not only that, when we got our tab, the options for the tip were 20%, 22%, and 25%. You've got to be kidding me. The waiter didn't even take our order. Why should ANYONE tip that much?! Another pet peeve of mine is when there are empty tables inside when we asked about it (the whole time we dined there). Even if there are reservations for a later time, I would prefer the waiter tell us, "I have a reservation coming in at XYZ time, would you like to sit there, I just need the table back by XYZ time." My family and I eat very, very quickly. I would have happily eaten our meal within 30 minutes indoors if that option was given to us. Anyway, overall the food was decent, but nothing really worth going all this way to try it. I think it worked out great in the sense that we were so close to the zoo and needed to each lunch right after. But the restaurant seemed like a huge ripoff. Honestly I have to say I was really let down by this restaurant after all the hype I've heard about it from multiple Oakland/San Leandro residents. It was super busy even for a Thursday night and we had a reservation for outside but luckily they were able to seat us at the bar. Service was good and attentive. The food is modern Vietnamese fusion with a menu that rotates seasonally. The halibut tartare was great. Their popular oxtail dish was on the heavier side and the I wish we had gotten the rice instead of the grits since it just made the texture really mushy. THK has been on our radar for awhile now. I made a reservation for 5:30 tonight, and we show up a few minutes before our time. We check in with the host only to be told that we didn't have a reservation. Really? I have a confirmation email and text from Open Table! He did offer us a table outside or at the bar. Not wanting to argue with him, and since it was just my husband and I we opted for the bar. We ordered the grilled oysters, foccacia bread with whipped butter, grilled beef & pork chipolata & the grilled meat platter with chicken, pork and short ribs. Everything was very good. To avoid getting grizzle and bone fragments, I would recommend sticking with the chicken for the meat platter. It's also a lot of food, so we ended up taking half of it home. Tldr; the price point is too high and this place presents as far too nice to have such poor service. First, the good. The food is excellent. We were a mid sized group and enjoyed getting to try most of the menu. Standouts were the pork belly, the rapini and the lettuce wraps- tho the lettuce wrap platter only brought four pieces of lettuce, far from enough to consume what was on the plate or to allow everyone in the group a wrap. Odd choice for a family style system. The cocktails were delicious- creative, well mixed and well balanced. The difficult. The service was a disaster. Everyone is so nice but no one has any idea what's going on. Our table was visited by at least five different servers, each of whom provided slightly different information about the food, when the kitchen was closing, etc. I asked three separate people what a dip was on the farm box platter and everyone told us something different. The QR code ordering system is terrible. The website is poorly organized, so it's hard to scroll and find dishes. The cell service in the area is weak and we all had trouble loading the page. The way orders are entered means that dishes will come out as they're ready. Part of the work of servers is to properly course your meal, especially in a place that seems to be aiming for more upscale. We had to ask for them to bring things in order. It was so chaotic and really detracted from the overall experience. It might as well be an order at the counter joint. It's such small dining room, they could easily have two-three servers dedicated to their own zones who are doing the actual work of serving- coursing the meal, capably answering questions about the menu, making sure you have ample plates and cutlery, knowing what everyone ordered. I'm not a picky diner. If the food is good I'll overlook a lot, but at this price point? It was really hard to get past how poorly we were looked after. You get two big pieces of pork belly which I shared. Pork belly deliciously spiced and cooked well. The restaurant is very spacious and clean, in addition they have a big outside dining patio. Came here for a work dinner and--wow. The oysters stole the show among the starters, though even the bread was memorable. I didn't take pictures because I was too busy soaking in the moment (a rarity for me). The short rib (part of the meat platter) was excellent (I didn't get to try the rest of the meat platter I was so full). The true revelation for me was the fish--whole fish with head and dead eyes. I usually avoid fish because I hate battling bones and I hate eating food that looks like the corpse, but this dish converted me on the spot. Perfectly cooked, insanely flavorful, and generous--it was hands down the best fish of my life. I actually called my mom after to confess it dethroned her version. If fish always tasted like this, I'd be pescatarian tomorrow. By the time my pork belly arrived, I was stuffed. The rice was fine, but the pork belly itself--rich and melt-in-your-mouth--was worth boxing up. To drink, I had the striking ube cocktail: beautiful, strong, unforgettable. This is a really good Viet place if you're in San Leandro (though if you're in SF proper, I think you could find better places) but a bit pricey than expected. Make sure to indicate "not sharing" to get the food all at once; this was confusing since they first sat us down and reminded us that this was "family style"...The issue was that I got my deconstructed meat platter as "to share" which meant that my other dining partners got their entrees first and only when they were done, did my food come. To that point, if you sit outside, they often forget about you, so the service left a bad taste in my mouth as I was trying to tell them the misunderstanding. In terms of food: Bread Floss - their take on a roti; it was fine, but the kids really loved it. Tofu pate - I really didn't like this. There were pickled vegetables and some crackers, but this just does not replace a good liver pate. Fish crudite with rice cracker -- this was good and I'd order it again Fritters - difficult to figure out what was actually in this. Nothing special Crab cake - not enough sauce Meat Platter - so much food, you probably need 2-3 people to finish this; otherwise, enjoy the leftovers for lunch the next day. You can't go wrong Veggie curry - one of my favorite dishes of the night. There's a lot of mushrooms in there which I loved. It came with bread but I also wish it came with rice bc it wasn't enough bread to soak up the curry. We ended up using the rice from our other dishes Pork belly - this was just okay to me. The non-fatty parts were a lil overcooked so it was kinda dry to me. The outdoor area was a great choice. The food was very high level. Excellent fresh taste. Very creatively made and full of flavor. We got 5 dishes for 4 people. Was meeting up a friend for a Saturday brunch and looked up places in San Leandro. Found a lot of reviews on this spot so I easily made a reservation on OpenTable for a Saturday for 2 at 12:00pm and it wasn't too busy. I wasn't sure where to park but there is street parking up front and it's also located residentially but also very close to the freeway and there's some parking nearby. Service was great, there were paper menus as well as a QR code to order on your phone. I asked the server for some suggestions. Since it was a weekend brunch we went with the rice paper rolls, grits and fried egg, banh mi bread pudding, and focaccia. The portions at first seemed small but it was a lot for 2 of us. I had to try their Vietnamese egg custard coffee and it was so strong and good. They definitely have unique fusion Vietnamese dishes and the egg and grits had a nice spicy kick to it if you like spice! Their focaccia was so nice and warm too. I recently had dinner here on a weekday evening. The location is a little odd, it backs up to the freeway next to a residential neighborhood. I arrived on the early side and was able to park right in front. They have a large outdoor dining area with heat lamps, and the indoor area is small and earthy. They want you to order via a QR code, which was frankly annoying. No one really wants to get out their phone when enjoying a nice dinner. We tried several dishes, and they were all good, but I wouldn't say outstanding. It would have been nice if they had some specials. Service was good. read more

Excellent spot for a special occasion. We had our Christmas celebration lunch here. We tried their Banh mi and Grits with egg for lunch. Our server was great and very helpful. Both the dishes we tried were very well made. We also had rice paper rolls for appetizers. I will highly recommend this spot for a date night or a special occasion especially for people leaving in the east bay. read more
