Great spot for barbecue in Castro Valley! They have a nice outdoor patio when it's warm outside and a large indoor seating area for colder days. Everything is self service. You order inside at the counter and pick up your food when it's ready. When you're done, you put your own trays and trash away. I was starving as we had just finished a hike nearby, so I got the 2 meat combo ($26) with tri tip and brisket with chips and baked potato as my sides. Of the two meats, the brisket was my favorite as it was nice and fatty, but the tri tip was solid as well. I was stuffed from just the meats and bread, so I took the baked potato home for later. My friend got the large chicken meal for $17.50, but I wouldn't recommend it. I tried a couple bites and it was pretty dry. My friend didn't like it either. If you're into beers, they have a large selection of beers on tap. You can either get a flight of 3 beers for $18 or various sized pours. I love coming to Canyon's for the family feel and atmosphere. The staff is always super welcoming and accommodating, ready to recommend their favs from their expansive menu. The food is delicious -- the portions are generous and I would say reasonably priced. My fav part is their wide selection of beer on tap. It's refreshing and they did a good job. Usually I order the BBQ spud with brisket and it's always cooked to perfection. I wish their Mac and cheese was a bit creamier but I think they just prefer to bake it for a while. Overall, I love coming here with my family and sitting outside. They're located in the central part of CV so we love to stroll after our meals too. This is the first good BBQ spot I've found in the Bay! My family of picky eaters all agreed that this was great food; my MIL and husband loved the brisket, I enjoyed the ribs. The tri-tip was actually a bit salty for me. Both were chewy, not tender, and kind of dry and there were only 2 types of BBQ sauce and both were also ok. The Mac n cheese was bland and the beans were so-so. The garlic bread didn't seem to have much butter or garlic and just tastes like lightly oiled white bread. This was my first time visiting on Mother's Day. The cashier was really nice and helpful with the order, but the food was disgusting. It reminded me of school lunch. The great ratings were so deceiving. The beans taste like they were straight out of a can. They were so hard and left a after taste. The other plate had turkey and burnt ends, with a side of beans, coleslaw and corn bread. The ribs were really good, especially with the bbq sauce. They had a lot of meat on them and wish I'd ordered more of those. The burnt ends were a little salty, like a beef jerky texture, definitely not my favorite. The coleslaw was pretty dry and the mac and cheese was okay, it had a garlicky taste to it. The beans were super watery, and not sweet like baked beans. I love corn bread but this one was a disappointment as it was dry and not sweet. If you've been to Gus's Bbq in Pasadena, this corn bread was not like that at all. We ordered to go and our order didn't have the pickles and jalapeños so that was a bummer. Overall this was place was just mid, and won't go out of my way to come back here. read more

We had an adventure yesterday in Castro Valley. After visiting the Castro Valley Marketplace, we discovered a BBQ Joint called Canyons Barbecue. I got a two-meat plate with tri-tip and pork ribs. The combo comes with cornbread and a choice of two sides; I chose mac and cheese and garlic bread. My friends got the brisket and rib combo with mac and cheese and baked beans. The BBQ was lip-smackin' good. The tri-tip was my favorite, both tender and flavorful. I will definitely return when I'm in the area because the food was that good. It's only a 30-minute drive, so it's not bad at all. Make sure to get some of the sweet-and-spicy cucumbers! OMG, they're the BOMB! In addition to great food, they offer a wide selection of craft beers. A clean restaurant, friendly, and fast service rounded out the great meal! The ribs were fall-off-the-bone tender and absolutely delicious. The tri-tip was a bit dry, but the brisket was very tender and packed with flavor. The mac and cheese was solid, while the cornbread was just okay. You order and pay upfront, then receive a text when your food is ready for pickup. They forgot to include our sides initially, so I had to go back and ask for them--not a big deal, but a little inconvenient. We sat outside on the patio and enjoyed the nice weather. There was more than enough food for four people. It feed 2 kids and 2 adults and still have left over for dinner. The ribs are pull off the bone. The chicken is delicious. IN A NUTSHELL] ok bbq food, decent pricing, good bbq sauce, dried out meat [VERDICT] - NOT APPROVED [RUN-DOWN] I was excited that a BBQ place had opened up in Castro Valley, but I was disappointed by this place. A lot of the food that we ordered was dried out and I think if they took it out a little earlier, then the meat would have been better. The only one I would recommend that was still juicy was the trip tip and the BBQ pork ribs. They do have a lot of seating which is nice (inside and outside). They also have beer on tap and other drinks. They also had interesting desserts that I may try next time. We ordered the BBQ Meals with the 3 meats. We ended up getting another plate for the two of us since the portions were sort of small. [SCORE & ORDER] OVERALL: 2.83/5 BBQ Meal 3 meat $34.50 Tri-tip (4/5) -This was the best meat option at this place. The trip tip was the only meat that was juicy. The meat was also smokey and did not need the BBQ sauce in my opinion. I would recommend getting this as the option for your meat choice. Brisket (2.5/5) -The brisket was dry and it also needed the BBQ sauce to make it taste better. It was also not that juicy which I wish it had more flavor. Pork Ribs (3.5/5) -Pork robs were juicy but it wasn't the best. I also feel that you can't mess up BBQ ribs, but the sauce made it taste all the better. I would recommend getting this as a meat option. Pulled Pork (2.5/5) -The pulled pork was super dry and it was sort of burnt. In the middle there were some soft parts of it but that was in the middle. The smokey flavor was there, but I needed to add the BBQ sauce in order to have some flavor. Portions are also small and I think it was not worth it. Sides: Potato Salad (3/5) -I am not a fan of potato salad but this one was interesting, especially the color. The flavor was ok but I wouldn't recommend this as a side dish. Sides: Cold Slaw (2/5) -Interestingly cut and the lettuce was way too small, a little watery. I think the weird part of it was that it was cut into small squares but there was not that much flavor. After my granddaughter's softball game, we decided to try Canyons Barbeque in Castro Valley for dinner. It was our first time there, and I can say we will definitely be going back. We arrived a little late and unfortunately the ribs were already sold out. However, my husband ordered a rib sandwich, so we still got to taste the rib meat--and it was absolutely delicious. Next time we'll make sure to get there earlier so we can order the ribs! The mac and cheese was fantastic, the prices were very reasonable, and the atmosphere was fun and relaxed. We sat outside and it was a beautiful evening. While I was waiting at the bar for drinks, there was a very disgruntled customer who was extremely rude from the start. I had been behind him when we ordered, and unfortunately I witnessed his behavior toward the staff. One of the employees--whose name I believe was Rocco (forgive me if I misspelled it)--handled the situation like a total professional.
