Ordered the Santa Maria which comes with 1/2 lb tri tip on top and a full size garden salad with 1/4 lb of their spicy tri tip along with baked beans for pickup. Service was quick and food was ready within 10 min. The salads were fresh and the tri tips were soooo yummy. I'm not much of a bbq person, but the meat was packed with Smokey flavor. It had been a while since I last ate here, so I decided to check it out again. I ordered the tri-tip meal with beans and mac and cheese for $20, which also came with cornbread. While the food was tasty, I do wish all my food had been hotter, as it was more lukewarm than expected. Ordering was done at the counter and was incredibly fast--my food was ready immediately after I paid and I was able to take it straight to my table. The restaurant has about six tables, along with self-serve drinks and barbecue sauce. There's also a bar that offers well beers on tap. The tri-tip was tender and flavorful with good marbeling. The mac and cheese was very cheesy, though I wished it had a bit more seasoning. When I got there, I realized ordering at the restaurant is only $22 so I should do that next time. They forgot my free Andes chocolate mint for my order. The garlic bread is a little bit burnt but still tasted good. It's on a soft bread instead of a baguette. The ribs, corn bread, and coleslaw were really yummy. I'm glad I tried this place out here in the East Bay after hiking with my friend, since there is a lack of yummy bbq at a good price in SF. There is free customer parking up to 3 hours in the back. Couple of things - I paid $72, for a 4 meat plate (comes with two sides), a side of garlic bread, cornbread and a bread pudding. Meat was alright. Brisket was kind of dry. Ribs.. eh. alright. After looking at yelp I see the presentation of the bread pudding looks appealing but if you've had a true southern bread pudding, this is a SERIOUS let down. I get it, it's a high-production restaurant. But charging $12 for soggy bread sprinkled with cinnamon and drizzled in warmed butter with a scoop of ice cream isn't it. I see a LOT of consistent reviews here and I'm a bit surprised. I guess if you're used to Bay Area BBQ and like your meat well done, this place might be a hit. We went around lunchtime and the restaurant still had a few seats available. There's also outdoor seating if you prefer to eat outside. The parking situation on weekends is pretty bad. The lot is tight, and it seems like no one knows how to park anymore. The menu is easy to read, but there are no pictures, so you'll have to use your imagination when deciding what to order. I ordered from the meat section. The pulled pork tasted good, but unfortunately, a large portion was fat. I understand pork shoulder needs some fat for flavor and moisture, but this felt like more fat than meat for me. The brisket was tender and had good flavor, but again, the portion seemed small for the price and there was quite a bit of fat. I also found the bark/char to be a little excessive. I know a dark, smoky bark is part of good BBQ, but some of it tasted more burnt than pleasantly smoky. They have sauce and soda stations, plus a sink right next to them so you can wash your hands afterward, which is a nice touch. The young man who helped me at the front was very chill & laid back, he was honest & helped me with what to order (I tend to ask people what they recommend) I ended up getting a tri-tip meal I believe it was around $20 it came with 1/2 a pound of meat 2 sides and your choice of bread (honestly a great price) along with the same thing for my daughter but as a kids meal. 1 beer & a small fountain drink. The meat was done very & my daughter enjoyed the garlic bread I'm honestly really picky about sides so I opted for a bag of potato chips and coleslaw which is some what vinegar based but honestly I wasn't really a fan. It's close to my birthday and I received an email giving me several days to eat at Canyons and receive a $15 discount. On top of that, I had joined their "club" program and had another $32.10 in credits. Definitely needed to take advantage! I ordered and paid via the website. Walking in a few minutes before our order was due, the order taker told me that it was coming right up. We chatted for a couple of minutes while the kitchen put the finishing touches on our order. She asked if I wanted mild or spicy BBQ sauce and I asked for one of each which she gladly supplied. We were taking the Beast for her monthly dog bath. Lunch would be afterwards. Post dog wash, we headed over to a nearby park with picnic tables, clean restrooms and plenty of space to walk the dog. We had ordered: Rack of Pork Ribs - 4 - Tender and moist. Individual ribs for easy eating. Burn't Ends - 2 - Too much sauce, not juicy meat. This item was disappointing. Mac & Cheese - 2 - Nothing special. We would have been happier with a blue box. Cole Slaw - 3 - A simple vinegar-based slaw. Passable but nothing to write home about. The counter service was very good. The kitchen staff didn't seem to enjoy their jobs. Most BBQ places that we've been to, the kitchen staff have almost always been friendly and welcoming to their guests. Overall, the venue looks clean and welcoming. I went to Canyons BBQ and had an amazing experience. I ordered the tri-tip sandwich and it was absolutely mouthwatering delicious. I couldn't have asked for a more tender tri-tip sandwich. One thing to know is that tri-tip is one of the harder meats to cook and a California staple, so I was definitely anxious when I ordered this. The sandwich can be a hit or miss type of order and Canyons BBQ did a great job making sure that the meat was smoked to perfection. The bread was soft, warm and delicious and the fries were crisped to perfection. We are really lucky to be able to have such a neighborhood staple. They have indoor and outdoor seating and it's easy to find because of the amazing smells that are wafting from the premises. Overall, it was a great experience. Extremely Disappointed -- $30 for a "Large" That Felt Anything But Large I've been to Canyons BBQ many times and have supported this business repeatedly. Unfortunately, my visit on Sunday, 8/09/2026, was the last. I paid $30 for a "large" meal, and even left an additional cash tip. What I received was an embarrassingly small portion for that price. The fries were spread across the plate in a way that seemed designed to make the serving look more substantial than it actually was. I understand food costs are high. I understand meat is expensive. What I don't understand is charging $30 for a "large" meal and leaving a longtime customer feeling like they were taken advantage of. Watching the cook behind the counter scantily arrange the food onto the plates as orders were being prepared should have been my warning sign. Unfortunately, I had already paid. This isn't about expecting an enormous amount of food. It's about expecting a fair and honest portion for the price being charged. When I spend $30 on a meal, I shouldn't walk away wondering why I feel like I got so little for my money. After being a repeat customer, I have to say this experience was incredibly disappointing. The worst part wasn't the portion itself--it was the feeling that the value simply wasn't there. So, Canyons BBQ, congratulations. You've lost a customer who had been willing to come back and spend money with you. I won't be returning. I'll be taking my business to Back Forty from now on. People from a variety of racial and ethnic backgrounds, as well as the gamut of socioeconomic statuses from ages 10 weeks to 86 years old met and reconnected over a delicious spread of Canyons Barbecue! We picked up the food because the location was outside of the 5-mile delivery radius. Also, I was not interested in e-z cater because they take a large percentage of the price of the food (30% from some places) and I would rather support the local businesses rather than a tech company. (Apologies for the rant.) Universally, the food was given rave reviews. A transitioning former vegan LOVED the Beans and the Vegan Italian Sausage. The Potato Salad was LOVED by those who make remarkable potato salad! The Tri-Tip, Chicken, and Ribs were phenomenal. Those who do not normally eat spicy foods had second helpings of Hot Links. A new salad eater grabbed extra Garden Salad. And people LOVED the Cornbread!! And the leftovers were happily taken by those who remained to the end. Im not entirely sure how many years this place has been here but I am definitely happy to have finally given this place a try. Having just moved to Castro Vally 6 months ago, finding good eats has been a fun adventure so far. My go-to BBQ spot prior to moving was The Smoking South and I need to first say God Bless the man that owns that place, he is a sweet heart. That being said, Canyon's bbq is absolutely delicious and a winner with my family. I haven't tried their chicken yet but I have tried their ribs, tri-tip, brisket, and burntends and they are all delicious. Personally, I love the brisket the most. The restaurant space inside looks spacious and there are plenty of beers on tap and cans to try out. As for their sides, I really love their mac and cheese. I tend to pickup my order around 6 for dinner so I usually place my order online earlier in the day. They usually have everything but if you wait too late, they might run out of a meat choice that you like. Staff is very friendly everytime I have come in to pickup my order.
