I came to this place on a Monday around 6:00 pm, I have tried eating at this place before, but was not able to get a table, since they don't take reservations, you can put your name down on an online waitlist. They serve Caribbean food, the place is pretty casual. The food here is pretty delicious, definitely 5 stars, well made, service was very good and pretty fast . They price is little high for the size of the dishes, they also add 20% of gratuity on the bill. I will Be back to try their whole fired fish. read more

We live in South Florida and have lots of great Caribbean food options in the area. We are visiting DC and I was hesitant to try Cane as I was sure it wouldn't meet the quality of the restaurants in Florida. Soooo, I was wrong!! Our selections were excellent. We enjoyed the doubles and pork belly but the star was the oxtails. Really, the oxtails were fabulous! The doubles were interesting but I would have been happy skipping the Indian fried bread and just enjoying a bowl of the delicious chick peas. read more

Cute intimate spot on H street. The service was quick as it was a Monday night and the restaurant was fairly empty. I do wish they had more options for vegetarians. If Canes does not update their menu often then there wouldn't be a reason for me to return. I can only eat so many chickpeas. Food was very tasty. read more

My food was delightful. My only concern is the space being so small. We literally felt like we were dining with the couple next to us. Maybe remove a few tables? But then that would mean they'd lose money so they probably never will. They also allow you to order food and beverage online , but the server became confused with how to reconcile the order he took for my friend himself with the order my friend placed online. I ordered oxtails for my boyfriend to go but he wasn't impressed with the taste, being Jamaican himself. What I got was good though! read more

An excellent 5-star all rounder!! A small place but the decor is well curated, but still with a relaxed ambiance. Perfect for a date or a hangout with friends when you want a nice vibe. When we went right at dinner open at 5pm on a weekday, there was plenty of space with no wait. The staff were all so helpful and friendly too, which is a super bonus. Worth the automatic 20% gratuity charge for dine-in for sure. The food was spectacular, everything we got had perfect texture and flavor. The meats were sooo juicy and tender with perfect smokiness. Leaning on the heavy side, so the pickled veggies were a great part of the dish. I wish it was sold as a side!! The drink was super yummy too, and boozy which is important imo. The flan was served warm which I thought was great! I especially loved how light in texture it was (so jiggly) while still very creamy and sweet. Parking was not too difficult along the local roads, personally. Can't wait to come back and try the lunch menu!! read more

Ugh I wish I lived closer I'd be here all the time just for the oxtails! Super friendly wait staff and everything is just really good but especially the oxtails - fall of the bone tender bursting with flavor. The rice is fragrant and fully and the pickled veggies were perfect to add some acidity. The Trini chicken was also really good - slightly over sauced in my opinion - it needed more rice to balance it out. I liked the crispy kale both the flavors and crispness but my partner didn't care for it. Would love to come back and try the jerk wings next time (in addition to the oxtails of course). read more

Cane is a small Caribbean restaurant on H Street, the sister restaurant to St. James. The service is great and everything comes out quickly. It's a very small restaurant so good for a date night or a good spot to try with a friend. They don't take reservations but they have a waitlist on Yelp. I tried the escovitch snapper and the oxtail. The snapper was better than I expected it to be and was a good size. The oxtail was very tender but not the best. Overall I had a great experience and would highly recommend. read more

Loved Cane, even to go! Can only imagine how good it is to eat in. Called in our order and showed up. Didn't have to wait too long on a Friday night, and they were busy! They do a great job with the takeout. We ordered the jerk wings (knew these would be delicious based on the ones from Spark), geera pork belly (amazing), Indian fried bread (amazing), crispy kale (amazing), the oxtail and the pepperpot (oxtail brisket and tendon stew). Everything had great flavor and serving sizes were good - we were stuffed after this meal. The oxtail and stew were delicious, but super rich - be careful ordering this amount of food or the two dishes together, as they're both fatty and filling. Will definitely be back to try more. read more

Super nice staff and delicious food! We got the ox tail that came in a delicious sauce with rice and veggies. The jerk wings were okay, but not the star of the meal for us. I was today years old when I discovered Cane and St. James are sister restaurants. The dining area at Cane is small and intimate. I used the Yelp Waitlist feature since they don't take reservations. When we arrived there was only bar seating but the bartender moved us to a table once one opened. The service was slow initially but I believe it's because they might have been understaffed this particular night with only a hostess and bartender. The bartender was also filling in as waiter. Oxtails 3/10: The oxtails were fatty and lacked flavor. I wouldn't order these again. Rice 10/10: Hot and fresh! Jerk Wings 10/10: The wings were amazing and were consistent with my experience at St. James. I'd visit again but I would only order the wings here. read more

This is a good neighborhood spot that might not be the most glamorous, but it's a good meal and a good spot to visit if you're on/by H or just love Caribbean food. We went to Cane on a Friday night, and we were able to sit down at a table for two immediately, which was fortunate because the restaurant is fairly small and was full for every other seat at the time. The food is delicious! As a general rule, if a restaurant only serves one style of wings, then it's probably a great wing, and I am happy to report that Cane's jerk wings live up to the rule. They have great quality meat and a wonderful jerk seasoning. We ordered the Omnivore Box, which includes POTATO & CHANNA CURRIES BEEF & CHICKEN CURRIES. The food is all very good, although the chicken curry did not really match my expectation of what chicken curry is - although, I do not eat Trinidadian food often, and it tasted good nonetheless. If you like a stiff mix drink, then the Rum Old Fashioned is for you. read more

I heard so much about this place but was a bit disappointed. May be my Indian palate was too judgmental but they also messed up my order. I like to support the local places during the time of this pandemic, but paying $70 for two people and you realize your order was not given properly. Coming to the food 1. Jerk Chicken Wings (4.5/5) little on the spicy end but they were great,Juicy and tender. 2. Omnivore box comes with four different types of dishes (2-veg and 2-meat) and a huge paratha. 2.1 The Chenna curry (4/5) was the best item out of the box. 2.2 The potato curry (3.5/5) it was little routine. 2.3 The chicken curry (4/5), the curry did not have much of gravy with it. Just two pieces of chicken. 2.4 Beef curry (4/5), it was cooked and was very tender meat. The only dish with a bit of flavor. The sauces that came along were delicious. May be I'll try the lunch menu next time. read more

So to start, we are fans of the St. James. We couldn't get a reservation and the person on the phone recommended Cane. That is a problem. They are NOT the same. To start, it's tiny and doesn't take reservations. Luckily, some of our party arrived early and put us on the list. We sat down for about 10 mins before anyone came over so I ordered a drink online. My tab had to be closed out so the server could serve us. Strike 1. The place is pretty loud and only serves only the items that St James doesn't serve. Strike 2. My purple passion was warm although the glass had ice on top. I guess it wasn't shaken. My husband's island life was all juice on top all rum on bottom. Same issue. Strike 3. I ordered no food as I wasn't impressed by the menu. My family ordered the snapper, pepper pot and oxtail. They said it was very good which I'm happy to hear. As for me, I won't be back. Moral of the story: this is NOT a substitute for the St. James. Looking for basically a carry out with tables? Cool. Looking for ambiance? Pass. read more

I did take out...wings, doubles and chicken roti: the "jerk" wings was NOT, it was very lemony, the Doubles (barra and Chana) came separate. It was salty and Chana a little too hard. The Roti and sauces was good but a little too salty. Im hoping it was just a bad day. read more

I am from the Caribbean, Trinidad to be exact, so I know my food. I think this place does well for Caribbean food done American. It's not really authentic, but then again, I guess it does not have to be. The restaurant is small and quaint , but it a pleasant dining experience, just be sure to make a reservation. My main negative is that my takeout order of three dishes went badly. Only after returning to my home in N Va did I realise that my dinner party was going to be disappointed. I ordered curry chicken and shrimp and Chinese Style chicken...Cane forgot my Chinese chicken, which by the way, is the best dish of the three, maybe the best dish they offer. I would not have been as pissed if they forgot one of the curry dishes. I would have driven back to get it, but quite frankly, that food is not worth my time and gas. I did get the dish refunded but not part of my tip, which was paid based on the total bill. Lesson learnt, net time I will check if I ever go back to Cane. read more

Disclaimer: This is my first review post-coronavirus crisis. We're still in the thick of it so my experience with Cane is based on take-out food only since all restaurants are closed for dining. Hopefully, people read this review years from now and think, "What the heck was coronavirus?" However, right now, it seems like people will rather say, "Wow, this is when daily life changed." My house ordered take-out for dinner and although it spilled in the car on the way home, it was worth it. It's by far the best Trinidadian food I've ever had. Literally, every dish was full of flavor and well cooked. Here's what we got: The omnivore, which comes with beef curry, chicken (on the bone) curry. potato curry, and chickpea curry with a very rich type of bread (similar to paratha in India). We didn't get rice, but the bread was so rich it filled four of us up. We got the hops, which are six moist rolls with rich house butter. They are among the best rolls I've ever had. I could have just eaten that. The jerk chicken wings were the best in the city perfectly spiced. Obviously, they also come on the bone. My favorite were the fresh mango chutney, chulantro, and tomato choka. They made each dish taste even better but also stand on their own as dishes. The entire meal for four cost around $80 and we had leftovers. We cannot wait to return! read more

Enjoyed getting take-out here! I loved the Trini-Chinese Style Chicken. So flavorful and delicious. The Geera Pork Belly is so crispy and crunchy. It doesn't have too much flavor, but the sauce makes it really good. The jasmine rice is perfectly cooked and almost has like a hint of coconut? I wasn't too impressed with the Jerk Wings since it seems to have a lot of hype. I didn't think it tasted like jerk or even had much of a unique flavor. The sauce was refreshing though. The Pholourie wasn't too bad, but probably wouldn't get that again. read more

Still can't believe Yelp doesn't have half stars, but I would give this place a 4.5/5. Under COVID restrictions, Cane is only doing pickup and delivery through Caviar and DoorDash so I placed our order through Caviar. Our order was supposed to be ready between 4:55pm-5pm but I suppose it was ready a bit earlier because the food wasn't piping hot. We ordered the oxtails, jerk wings, and the hops. oxtails - not the usual flavor I expect when I order this dish. it had more of a tangy rather than rich taste because I assume they use some vinegar in the seasonings. however, then meat was very tender and moist jerk wings - spicy and not your average small wings you get from the wing spot. a little on the salty side but overall good though and pairs nicely with the rice because of the extra sauce that the order contains but also to balance the saltines hops - bread rolls. good but they forgot to put the butter in our order so that was disappointing. not as soft as I expected the bread to be either rice - love when my rice is cooked just right and not over cooked!! this rice was the perfect texture The total of our meal was $50 which was expected, but it's definitely more pricey than your local Caribbean carry out. Def worth it tho if you're looking to splurge! read more

The space is cozy and unassuming, with friendly staff and comfy environment with fun upbeat music. I was really excited by all of the vegetarian options! I ordered the coconut rice, eggplant choka and doubles. The food was very affordable with a really good portion size. I loved the flavor of the doubles, a little spicy, a little sweet in the bread and perfectly cooked chick peas. The coconut rice came served in a coconut and you could really taste the coconut it was my favorite part of the meal. Standing ovation for Cane!!! This Trinidadian establishment is the absolute truth, and all my friends know that Im a serious skeptic and harsh critic of caribbean food. My mother hails all the way from San Fernando, Trinidad, and this woman can seriously throw down in the kitchen. Even my grandmother (may she RIP), wouldn't let any of her 8 children help cook except for my mom, because according to my grandma "she [mom] has my [grandma] hands [for cooking]". Anyway, every item that we tasted was so delicious and well seasoned and flavorful. That curry beef was so succulent and marinated...whew! Im not even much of a beef eater. The doubles (a trini street food) is a served as an appetizer here, and offered at a size-able amount. this is definitely a must-try! Krispy kale, oxtails, and jerk wings are all wonderful choices as well. I also highly recommend the tiffin box, which allows you to taste several staple trini entrees. And if you really have a sophisticated palate, you should be able to distinguish the difference between trini cooking/flavoring vs. other caribbean island cooking. Yes, Cane is the truth! Shout out the trini owners and the main chef...keep up the great work! read more

I finally came in for the oxtail! Additionally, I re-ordered the wings. Well, I got this via takeout, and I would be open to visiting them in person. The oxtail was tasty, but mostly bony and you really don't get much value for the price you're paying for the oxtail, the dish was a bit forgettable. I really enjoyed the wings last time so I re-ordered that and they weren't as good as the first time. They forgot to add the tamarind mayo and the wings just tasted a little bit different in terms of flavor and I preferred it the first time. I did reach out to Cane about the missing sauce and they did share with me a five dollar coupon for my next visit. Knowing that this is a more upscale Caribbean restaurant, maybe I have to come in person to get the best value from eating here, but as of right now, I think this would be my last order. read more

tl;dr Amazing flavors and super tasty - my only complaint is that some of the entrees were too salty. My friend and I came here for dinner this past Wednesday at around 8 PM. Sadly, the restaurant closes at 9 PM, so we had to finish our food relatively quickly. Ambiance is nice but overall the space is pretty tight. It was difficult to get into our seats without worrying about knocking something off of another table. Also, it was very loud in here! The speaker was right above our table and was blasting music (catchy, but too loud) so it was hard to talk with my friend without shouting at him. Service was pretty quick and food came out quite quickly! We got three appetizers, an entree, and a side to share. Here were some of our thoughts: * Jerk Wings: It came with four wings (not as charred as the picture from the menu) with a creamy dipping sauce that has a slight sweetness to it. The wings by itself were very flavorful and seasoned well, but it was way too salty. The meat was very tender and fell off the bone very easily. However, the sauce complements the jerk wings well and the fattiness of the sauce took away the overly salty wings. Definitely our favorite appetizer here and we would recommend it. * Doubles: Nothing super special, imo. I enjoyed eating the fried Indian bread but the toppings were pretty mediocre. Chickpeas weren't bad, though. * Pholourie: This appetizer is definitely an acquired taste. I did not enjoy the first bite (maybe because I wasn't expecting the combination of spices and the very chewy texture) but I ended up eating three of them! I liked that it was on the sweeter side along with the tamarind sauce that came with it (it was kind of like dipping a bread-like ball in a jam-like sauce). My friend didn't enjoy this as much as me, sadly. I really liked this, so I'd recommend it! * Oxtails Plate: For $24, I would have expected more oxtails. Most of the entree were bones covered with very little meat. However, it was super delicious and flavorful! It was smothered in a yummy savory sauce and the meat was very tender. This also came with a small pan of coconut & lime jasmine rice which was very tasty! I love the subtle coconut flavor and it's definitely something I could enjoy by itself. Overall, I enjoyed this a lot and would recommend it. I just wish there was more meat, lol. Again, the rice was very delicious!! * Crispy Kale: The kale was very crispy and seasoned well (sprinkled with some nuts) but it was a bit messy kind of like how seaweed as it gets everywhere when you take a bite. It was also incredibly salty, so we didn't end up finishing this side. It was also a bit too oily, imo. The total came out to be $55 + tax + automatic 20% gratuity. It was about $35 per person and we were pretty full and had some food left over. I liked that we were able to try a good amount of food - a mix of sweet & savory along with lots of different textures and flavors! Overall, I would recommend this place for a good experience! It was good to try Caribbean cuisine for the first time and see how other cultures and countries have influenced the food. Our only big complaint is that it was very salty, but most dishes were delicious and very flavorful. Lots of seasoning! read more

All around great vibe food is always on point tonight just had to share the love by letting you foodies know as well. Shout out to the staff as well they are pretty quick and attentive. The menu is filled with numerous options of Caribbean delights. I recommend starting off with drinks the rum punch is one of my favs. A great started is the jerk wings they never fail to amaze. Juice and tender, falls right off the bone and not to spicy for those of you who can stand the heat. the Krispy kale with mango chutney is another fav snack its a healthier alternative than a bag of kettle corn chips filled with flavor and a savory sweet experience when chutney is added. be sure to try the Geera pork while your at it which is a tapas size portion of pork belly. there is an mmm in every bite. for the entrees i recommend the oxtail and rice or the grilled oxtail. both are awesome choice it just depends on if your looking for Smokey texture from the grilling. a great side to compliment this dish is a side of eggplant i promise it will make you look at eggplants differently. read more

So for a couple of years I 've been hearing how good Cane is and I finally made it. Happy to report it was awesome!! This is a place to come to hungry. The food is tasty. There were three of us and we ordered the jerk wings, omnivore box, oxtail plate (a must!), crispy kale and eggplant choka. It was plenty to satisfy 3 very hungry adults. It's a satisfying and comforting meal. Now, I must say, it is greasy food. So for me it's more of a treat then a regular eat but totally worth it. As far as the place and service, the place is small. They don't accept reservations and have a waitlisting starting at 5pm (I went on Friday). People are there right at that time to get in. We ended up seating at a low table which was not too bad to eat at. They have high tops communal table, the bar and a long booth. At 6pm the place was full and I noticed a lot of take out orders were going out. This is a busy place but the staff is suuuper nice. Service was good and the food came out quick. So it's clear they want you for the most part in and out of the place relatively fast to have the table ready for the next party. We were there for an hour and fifteen minutes. We are also fast eaters and we're starving so could be the reason we stayed a short time. We were happy the food came fast. Lol. All in all a great experience. And I would definitely come back. read more

The best jerk chicken wings ever! That is the end of my review. Sometimes I like my review to be just one caption and that is it. For this restaurant, this is what I wanted to say but my intuition tells me to write and open up the explanation a little bit more. Like the reader might wonder why the jerk wings are the best. What makes them great, so I feel like I owe it to the reader to explain my short review a little bit more and expand it into multiple pages. I usually keep a list of restaurants I want to try and this one was on the list. I don't even remember how it was added on that list but it made us try this restaurant and I am glad I have this list. The restaurant doesn't have reservations but Yelp is helpful by giving you a notification when to join on the waitlist. We got there and even though we were late the server was really helpful and let us sit. The restaurant is very loud with its small space but I don't mind it. It creates a more authentic atmosphere rather than eating in the fancy and new h corridor area. I like this place because our waiters and people working on there were joking and very friendly which created a sense of different look from the usual customer seller feeling. I would say this place is a little bit on the pricy side compared to 2 stars but the quality of ingredient is great and it is delicious. The items in the appetizers all look great and I want to try them all slowly but this time we tried the jerk chicken wings. These are smoked wings and they are smoked to perfection. The meat falls of bone and the spice and taste has it all you could ask. It is a little bit hot, jerky enough to be called jerk chicken. Really a must try in this restaurant. We also got crispy kale which was part of the sides. Probably one of the best crispy kale around town with unique spices. For the entree we got Snapper Escovitch Fish. You have to take the photo from the fish and turn over the fish. A tip from our server. This is a whole snapper deep fried. The fish itself doesn't have much seasoning but it comes with a green sauce, picked and chilies. On the side there is rice in a bowl made out of coconut. The smell of coconut is all over the rice and gives that warm feeling inside your stomach. The sauce is really tasty and goes well with the fish and rice. It was a great experience having dinner in cane and looking forward to taking my friends there. read more
