Many thanks to Tom and his crew for doing such a great job on our roof, completed between rain showers! We contacted Calpac and a few other roofers when we had a leak and Tom's bid was extremely reasonable, especially given the metal roof has a life expectancy of 50 years. Sal was able to patch our leak until they had a window to do a full tear off and re-roof. Tom dropped off a sample of the Boral steel material for us to see before we finalized our choice to make sure it matched well with the house. The final product looks beautiful- lots of interesting texture and matches perfectly. You would never know from the outside that it is metal. Sal and his team were hard working, careful, courteous, and meticulous. They were able to coordinate bracket installation with my solar installer, and made sure to remount our antenna. We now have improved air flow in the attic, and a significantly lower home insurance premium due to the fire-resistance and Class 4 hail impact resistance. This a million star review!!! for Tom the owner of Cal-Pac Roofing and his crew Sal, Michael, Roberto, Brian. Tom and his crew has made our roof and our home Safe, Secure, and sooooo very Beautiful!!! When I searched for a company who can help us fix a steel roof leak, I called 3 companies. Tom was the only one willing to help us fix a steal roof leak and the many complications, the other two companies tried to sell us a new roof. We appreciate his integrity, honesty, and kindness. We also appreciate how friendly, congenial, and very easy going he is to work with. We had many repairs and renovations going on with other contractors during the time I contacted Tom. Our initial project was for roof repair leak and maintenance, new facia, gutter project, which was a 3 phase process because it had to be done in between a big stucco project in which stucco was placed on the soffit and other repairs. Also as Tom mentioned, steal roofs are meant to last 50 years and half way at 25 years which about how old our roof is, certain maintenance needs to done. Our roof is complicated one, as it has a hog valley effect in where the initial roofers didn't place the tiles correctly. Like I said, Tom was the only roofer willing to take the challenge in helping us correct this. One of the many things we liked most about Tom is his patience and immediate responses to our needs in this 3 step phase process during the many months of our house renovations and repairs which was so very valuable!! We are so appreciative and grateful for his immediate responses; When we found out we had a roof leak (1st phase), he sent Brian the next day, immediately after our initial communications, for inspection. Then Sal and Michael came soon after to repair the roof leak and that's when we also met Tom in person; during the tear down of the fascia and gutters (2nd phase) Sal found dry rot in different places, he immediately had Sal fix it; Again just before the stucco company was to start, I hadn't realize the new fascia boards needed to put up before the stucco company started. I sent an email to Tom if his crew could come right away, he immediately sent Sal and Michael; And again his response was immediate when we discovered that past owners had not placed adequate vents and fans for the attic. His response time was immediate as to the different solutions. It has been incredible how fast he responded via emails and phone calls, even when he was on vacation in Europe it was fast! His crew Sal, Michael, Roberto, and Brian are very hard workers, friendly and a delight to work with. His crew came early and immediately got the job done even the gutter crew were fast. I especially like how calm and easy it was to communicate and interact with Sal. I LOVE MY ROOF!!! I've had my roof for nearly a year and it still makes me smile each time I look at it. It was worth the investment ~ a house with a roof that makes me smile. Glad I decided on this steel tile roof design and sooo glad I found Tom, Brian and Cal Pac roofing, Campbell. I did the research. These roofs last well past fifty years if installed correctly. In the Bay Area Cal-Pac Campbell are the experts. Initially Tom said my home in El Cerrito was too far north, out of their range. I called all around and found no one with the experience of Tom and Brian. I begged him to recommend someone in my area who could do as good a job as they could. Tom gave in and agreed to do my roof! My neighbors, myself, people walking their dogs and driving by would stop to watch Brian at work. As the roof evolved, they started asking me about the materials, design and cost. I think that over the years there will be more steel tile roofs on my block. I can't say enough about Brian's meticulous work. Everything lined up perfectly from the lattice work to the final caps. He is also friendly and a genuine pleasure to work with. This was part of an attic reinforcement. Tom was flexible and coordinated perfectly with my contractor to time the roof installation. It was important to complete the attic and chimney work first to get that perfect water tight fit. I read that steel tile roofs are triple the cost of asphalt but Tom's price was less than double the cost of bids I got on asphalt. We contacted Tom to request replacement quote for our old worn out roof. He promptly complied with our request and was on time and very courteous when he came to our home to discuss the bid. Unfortunately Tom's roofing material product was not suitable for the pitch (slope) of our roof and would not work on our home. Nonetheless Tom proceeded to cheerfully give us great information on how to proceed with our project even recommending another contractor that may be able to help us and giving us his layout drawings to assist us. Our shake roof was due for replacement, but a new shake roof is very expensive. We were ready to go with asphalt, seemingly the most common choice, despite our concerns that it would not insulate our home as well, plus we didn't like the overly regular pattern it presents, and yes, it doesn't look much like shake, even the thicker shingles. Before we made a final choice, we decided to take a look at metal roofs since some of them look more like shake, and we had heard that they provide good insulation. Most research online, including EnergyStar.gov, convinced us that metal roofs are especially more effective in keeping the house cool in the summer. In addition, there is a roofing insulation product available whose web site says to not bother to use it unless there is an air space above it that a metal roof provides. The roof replacement quote from Cal-Pac Roofing was essentially the same as the cost of the high-end (thicker to look somewhat more like shake) asphalt quote. Furthermore, one of the latest metal roof product designs looked very much like shake when we visited a couple of homes that Cal-Pac referred us to. Tom Sparling is the owner of Cal-Pac roofing. He spent a over an hour riding around our neighborhood with us, helping us to identify metal roofs (we were confusing many "fake-shake" cement roofs for metal). Tom and a colleague designed a solar powered attic fan a few years back, and we had his crew replace our old, noisy, temperature controlled attic fan with this solar fan as well. After a number of hot spells this summer, we are very happy with our choice of a metal roof. I would like to acknowledge the excellent job that "Cal-Pac Roofing" did on my home in Palo Alto, CA. They are true craftsmen that will work to please the customer - even when the job proves to be quite challenging. We have single story home in south Palo Alto that surrounds a very old oak tree. I decided to replace the existing shake roof with a metal roof that looks like a shake roof. Our roof is quite large (5,800 square feet) and has several unique cut-outs, skylights, and very large roof overhangs. Because of the necessity of walking on the roof for the purpose of removing the oak tree droppings, we chose a "Steelrock" product called Pacific Shake and selected Cal-Pac to do the installation. We also had some low slope areas on the shake roof that had leaked that we had previously fixed by using a rubberized underlayment under the shake. Cal-Pac proposed a similar solution in those areas by modifying their installation procedure to incorporate a "Stick and Peel" underlayment that provides a double roof solution. A new solar panel installation was also included in the overall project and Cal-Pac installed non-penetrating solar brackets to hold the solar panels. I am an engineer, formerly with NASA, and can be pretty particular about how to solve difficult problems. Tom Sparling, the president of Cal-Pac, after consulting with his installation experts, professionally addressed all of my custom design issues. The actual installation, of a roof of this difficulty was led by Mel and Brian. They were the ones who had to come up with solutions for several challenging architectural issues. Mel worked with the solar company to position the non-penetrating J-brackets and provided overall leadership installation guidance. Brian worked untiringly to make sure that the details of the installation were of high caliber - sometimes re-doing some details to satisfy my wife and me. He often offered suggestions to improve the installation. The result that has been obtained by the talented Cal-Pac people is excellent. We have maintained the "shake look" without using shake. The high definition Steelrock Shake is compatible with our large Oak tree and has enhanced the look of our California Ranch style home. We also have a roof that is compatible with the installation of new solar panels. All of the personnel at Cal-Pac are high quality professionals who do put the customer first. So what happened to this company? I went for a quote on a similar job they did 5 years ago and everything started out nice, guy came out and took dimensions and I pointed out light tube and new skylights they'd have to work around. I also wanted new gutters. I got the call with a verbal quote and the price was 150% higher than I thought it would be. Additional the gutter cost almost 2x what I thought. Also, he didn't have the details recorded that I discussed with the guy who came to the house. I ended up going with someone else and a separate gutter company. Both came in at the price I expected it would cost. What happened to this company? We're they just taking advantage of an old customer or did their costs go up drastically? read more

Just completed our custom color roof today.LOVE IT! Men worked very hard and also recommended some color changes so metal trim matched our house better. We wanted the best cooling roof so added the heat barrier, a solar fan and eyebrow vents in the hope our AC bills will be less this summer. I already can tell the house is cooler! Thanks to Cal-Pac the hole on my roof due to a previously installed a/c unit on my roof caused a leak in one of the bedrooms in the past which was finally repaired. I've called other companies which referred me to Western Roofing Company in the past since I have Decra Tile Metal Roof. Long story short Western Roofing was absolutely of no help. In fact the manager claimed they were the only company that handles metal roofing repairs, which was quite astonishing to me, and yet since perhaps the repair seemed minor, he neglected to return my calls and/or give me a quote for repair. Months later after diligent search and profound determination of searching for a reputable roofing company, decided to give Cal Pac Roofing located in Campbell, CA (since near surrounding area) a call and left a message. To my surprise Tom the manager gave me a call back same day (1st day), we arranged to have someone come out the very next day (2nd day) for a quote, and the following day (3rd day) Brian repaired hole on my roof. Best way to describe them: Awesome. They are professional and go out of their way to make things go smoothly with minimal impact on daily life. Some examples: Delayed disconnecting my roof-mounted SAT dishes until last minute; I ended up with no TV for one afternoon only (with other roofers could have been 10+ days) . Installed solar fans - then arranged (no cost to me) to have solar fan company come out and install solar tilt kits to maximize their performance I had a complicated reroof - I have solar panels that needed to be removed/reinstalled by 3rd-party solar company. Though that company was a major pain to deal with, Cap-Pac worked directly with them and got the jobs coordinated. In the end, the solar company messed up and installed the panels in the wrong locations (SOLAR COMPANY AT FAULT) - forcing Cal-Pac to do a lot of rework. Clearly Cal-Pac was not at fault and deserved to get paid for the extra work. What was great was that they billed the solar company directly (they deal and have relations with several of them) and I never had to worry about it. I also noticed that each night the crew would do a walk around the house to clean up any debris from the day's work. There was always a large pile of stuff in the driveway, which will always be the case no matter which roofer you use. But they made a point of keeping the mess to the pile only. One last nice touch: They replaced all the flashing on the roof and painted it all to match the metal shingles I had installed - makes a HUGH difference on the final look. ONE THING TO NOTE: There are several "CAL-PAC" variations. Each is a totally different company and some have gotten less than stellar reviews. An update on the new roof. I contacted my insurance company to let them know about the change from shakes to stone0coated steel. They adjusted my homeowner's policy, reducing the cost by $130 annually, due to the fireproof nature of the steel roof. read more

We have installed a new steelRock roof with insulation instead of old shakes and everything went fine. We have asked to replace a few old planks around the roof and take care of some other small details and they handled that expediently - at extra cost - but quite reasonable. I have had my roof done by Cal-Pac a week ago. For those who are looking for a roofer to replace your roofs, here is my recommendation: talk it over with Cal-Pac, and here are my impressions of their work: 1. For starters, both partners (who own the company) Tom and Mel are very courteous and patient in explaining their process and answering questions. 2. Their working crew is efficient, polite, and considerate. On the first day, they noticed my car was still in the garage, they rang the doorbell and suggested that i might want to move my car out. It's a good thing that I moved it out. All sorts of little stuff falling off to the garage floor when the old wood shakes were being removed (garage has no ceiling). When the old roof had been removed in the afternoon, they swept the garage floor to clean up the debris before they left. 3. I had a conversation with the person who laid down the new roof. As I remember, he has somewhere around 20 years of experience laying down new roofs (we selected metal-shake roof). He is an expert, hardworking, and efficient. 4. My old skylight cover is 26 years old. They no longer make this type of cover. Mel came over to remove the cover and took it to somewhere (presumably to people who make skylight covers). I looked up to see the blue sky from my family room --- it is indeed sky's light --- but then I was concerned about the uncovered opening. Shortly afterwards, Mel came back with the old skylight cover and got on the roof again to cover it. It is that the attention to detail and consideration for their customers make their business thrive. 5. Sometimes a job's progress can be held up by waiting for inspections. I was really impressed by their smooth inspection process. From what I saw and heard was that they made an arrangement with the inspector for the inspection first thing in the morning, and Mel came over at 8 a.m. to wait for the inspector. Overall, we are very pleased with our new roof and will definitely recommend Cal-Pal Campbell to our friends. read more

After inspecting the roof , one tile was found to be loose. There was no charge for the inspection and I screwed it down. Mine was a small to medium size repair job, that like many had some real challenges. There was quite a bit of dry rot and some extensive wood damage, not to mention some things that were not done correctly in the first place and in a subsequent repair jobs by other companies. It took a while to get these guys out here but it was worth the wait, it is their busy season. Bryan, Sal and Mike were excellent to work with and did a great job. I made modifications and new requests as we went along and they were happy to accommodate. A talented and professional crew. Cleaned up every night and made sure that what they were doing was what I had in mind. Bryan even went beyond with some of the repair fixing a lot of problems caused by previous companies. But dealing with Tom and his crew made this so easy. He demonstrated integrity with expectations including cost, results and timelines. Both men were extremely polite, respected our home and knew we had two dogs that required the gate to be closed at all times. We called Cal Pac Roofing after our roof was installed in 1985, almost 30 years ago. We were selling our home and needed a roof inspection. After speaking with Tom we decided to take him up on his offer of a roof "tune up" inclusive of an inspection. Tom was very efficient and courteous. When it came time for the tune up, Mel from Cal Pac arrived at our home. He got right to work and we were all astounded at the quality, effort, and expertise that Mel displayed. I've never seen a roofer take the time to detail a roof like this. My wife, daughter, and I stood on the ground just watching this guy do his thing. I've been around construction all my life so I'm not easily impressed, but this was unique. After Mel finished the job he reported that the roof was in excellent condition.
