Ordered a Barbie cake and a Ken cake for my kids 18th birthday. They told me I could drop off the namebrand dolls because they do not carry them. So I spent extra time and money to drop off a tuxedo to go along with the Ken cake. They did not change his outfit. They left him in his beach gear. Also, last time I ordered a Barbie cake they made her dress out of fondant on the top. This time they left her in the pink dress that does not even match the cake or the theme. So first things first, after 46 years at the same location Cakes by Karen has relocated to and this may be incorrect but I think the exact lo action is 1476 W. 104th Ave. Still in Northglenn, in the shopping center that also featured Red Lobster restaurant ( if you know Northglenn you know where it is.). But just because they moved doesn't mean the quality changed. So for those don't know about this place you can pretty much tell them what you want, send them a picture or print and they can apply it to a cake. They offer round, square and tiered cakes. And probably alot of other things that I may not know about but you can always ask. Is it a little pricey ? Maybe but for what you get I feel it's worth it and honestly I really don't remember the last time other than once in the last few years I've bought a cake from anywhere else. They also offer several types of fillings upon request. All I can say is I emailed them what I was looking for which was a 8" round what I wanted on it, some decorations on the side colors and , called to change the main print confirmed and left it in thier hands and everything was on point and honestly exceeded my expectations. And the cost just to be upfront was just under $80 but I did also buy a couple of birthday candles with it as well. They did start offering a punch card but honestly I keep forgetting about it. If your looking for quality and taste which the frosting is to kill for as well as the moist cake this is your place. read more

We recently visited the Northglenn location to order a cake for our anniversary, which was over two months away. The order cost us $278. Due to a change in plans, I went back to cancel the order. To my surprise, I was informed of a 20% cancellation fee, even though our event was still two months out. While this fee might have been mentioned in the fine print of the receipt, it was never communicated to us when we placed the order. Here are the reasons why we won't be returning: Lack of transparency: The cancellation policy should have been made very clear at the time of ordering. Given that our event was so far out, it's unlikely they had already purchased ingredients or made any preparations. Misleading information: They were not upfront about the cancellation policy. They mentioned store credit, but what they actually meant was that you could either lose the 20% cancellation fee or receive the full amount as store credit. Unreasonable fee: The cancellation fee is excessive. I understand that closer to the event date, resources and ingredients might be allocated. However, we canceled less than a week after placing the order, and our event was still two months away. It shouldn't cost $35 for someone to spend 10 minutes writing the order and taking our payment. Overall, the lack of clear communication and the unreasonable cancellation fee have left us disappointed and we won't return. read more

The design was nice, the cake was slightly dry but then again I had never tried it before. I ordered it for one our attorneys birthdays, they liked it. We had more of a billing issue. We prepaid for the cake were then charged and then the person who picked up the cake was charged again. Now we have to make sure that person gets refunded. For my birthday this year I was on the hunt for my absolute favorite cake... pink champagne. Apparently this is a flavor that is NOT at all popular in this area because virtually no bakery will make them. Odd. But I'm a transplant so maybe it's a regional thing, who knows. Anyway, my boyfriend used to be a dishwasher for Karen YEARS ago and as I was venting my disappointment at not being able to find my favorite cake anywhere, he pulled up the website and low and behold it's offered!! I called with less than 24 hours to go before it would need to be picked up and not only was the service super friendly and reassuring that a last minute order was not a problem at all, the cake was ready to go when he picked it up and it looked absolutely beautiful!! As soon as I cut into it and took my first bite I had a nostalgic moment... this is the cake I grew up having every year for my birthday and sadly it's been years since I've been able to find one, let alone a good one. Good doesn't even describe it. Decadent, delicious, AMAZING!! Cakes By Karen has been in business in Colorado for decades. I love the white cake with buttercream. I like their German chocolate and also the poppyseed with raspberry filling (ask for fresh raspberries when in season!) The roses are beautiful. Other decorations are also great but I prefer the flowers. The taste is wonderful. Our guests have never been disappointed. I am 38 this year and have had this cake for nearly every birthday of my life. So, that speaks for itself. We went another direction for our wedding but in hindsight, I wish we had chosen Cakes By Karen for our wedding. Keep this in mind, too, to surprise your employees once a month with corporate cakes/cupcakes for events! They really do a wonderful job. read more

I ordered a very expensive $88.00 dollar cake from the Melody Dr location in Thornton/northglenn location. I ordered a Lego cake for my 2 year old son. I specifically asked the cashier, (who was insanely rude and disconnected) if I could get my sons cake to look exactly like this one. She said, "Yes, we can make it look the exact same." When I received the cake, it had candy legos on the top of it, and didnt have the same icing that I requested for the kids at the party. It didnt look like the cake I wanted. So, I politely took the cake and just hoped and prayed that it tasted good. Well, it crumbled the second we cut into it. It was dry and had a very poor flavor to it. The kids wouldnt even eat it. I also had to take all of the candy legos off of the top of it, because toddlers couldnt eat it. I also wouldnt have ordered the cake, if I knew that I was going to get candy on it. I emailed cakes by karen and sent them photos and told them about it. They were kind enough to apologize. I simply said, "I know a lot of hard work went into making that cake, so I am not asking for a full refund, but I am asking for a partial credit back to my card. A partial credit would have been $44.00. That is what was agreed on when I spoke to the male voice on the phone. I unfortunately forgot his name. Instead, I received a $30.00 credit. So, with great disappointment, I ended up spending $54.00 on a cake that no one could eat. It was quite embarrassing and ruined the birthday party. The kids even said, "this icing is weird" and they threw it all in the garbage. Education needs to be done on what "fondant" means. It is not an edible icing, especially for a kids birthday party. They didnt care to explain that to me. They also didnt keep their word when a partial credit was agreed upon. I will spread the word to everyone to not order cakes by karen. I am getting married soon, and was going to order my cake from them if this one was good.. Of course, I wont be doing that now. If anyone has any suggestions on a good cake place that actually cares for their customers and makes good cakes, please let me know. read more
