The cakes are lovely. A perfect delight. The cookies, good. The breaded pastries, good too. What I'm here to talk about are the lemon bars. I've never had one like this. The lemon part is a stiff curd. The tart to sweet ratio is on point. I just need you to know it's an elevated lemon bar, like a block of lemon pie with crumbles on top. The crust is light and flaky, yet holds sturdy for the curd. I ate it before I could take a pic. Next time I go I'll take a pic first. One of the best bakeries in Los Angeles, Cake Monkey has two locations. One is in Hollywood and is a normal bakery. They also have a windowless building on a sketchy industrial street in a gross area of North Hollywood (watch your feet while walking for all the piles of dog excrement all over the place - it's like a mind field), which it turns out is just for pick-ups. I didn't know this. You don't go in. You pay in advance, make your order, then show up, have trouble finding parking anywhere, ring a doorbell, and they bring the baked goods to the door for you. So, no service to speak of, but it doesn't matter I guess if you know what you want, as the quality at both locations is spectacular. The first time we tried their products was when a co-worker got the missus a bunch of small treats a few years ago for her birthday. They included exceptional high quality versions of Drake's style confections like devil dogs and ring dings and yodels (all of which are not for sale in California or I believe west of the Mississippi River). As a born and bred New Yorker, it was heaven to find high quality versions of these much missed treats. When Sweet Lady Jane, which was my go to for nearly 30 years for their triple berry cake, had financial problems and closed a few years ago, I was devastated. Then Cake Monkey made a version. It's not exactly the same, but it is pretty close and just as good. Better yet, once Sweet Lady Jane found new ownership all their prices went through the roof. The same size cake at Cake Monkey is at least $20 cheaper if not more at this point. If you like Drake's cakes or the Sweet Lady Jane triple berry cake, I strongly, strongly suggest trying Cake Monkey. Maybe go to Fairfax first so you can see the desserts instead of ordering blindly. Our friend Chris brought a Pecan Pumpkin Pie from this location to our Thanksgiving celebration. I know they use the finest organic ingredients and it showed...this is the most unusual pie I've ever had and everybody loved it... We had so many desserts this year and my guests loved every dessert especially this one. Absolutely in love with the customer service! I called to ask if they had anything I can pick up since I was late in ordering but they accommodated to my request! Usually an order would be a minimum of 48 hours but they were quick to take my 24 hour request . They were so sweet , so welcoming and friendly. Lisa was very friendly on the phone with ordering and the team was able to accommodate quickly, providing a pickup process within an hour that was totally seamless. I love ordering their mini cakes because you can try different flavors and it makes for a very pretty presentation! Most recently I ordered three mini cakes for a friend's birthday. You can call in and order a pickup from this location. Found them while on a last minute cake hunt for my anniversary/postponed wedding weekend. I kinda like the clandestine vibe of walking up to the door to ring the bell in an otherwise residential community. I should've called to ask if cakes were sold here... only small pastries are available. But the reps were super sweet and brought out to the door the menu and the mini raspberry cake sandwich I decided on trying just for fun. It's moist and definitely raspberry rich. I learned a valuable lesson which is to make sure you use Yelp in conjunction with Google Maps. I decided while I was in LA to find and try a bakery with a cool variety of desserts. I decided to try Cake Monkey Bakery so I did a search in Google Maps and saw a location a little over 20 minutes away. I drove to the location which looked like it was in an industrial area, didn't see any signs, found the address but the door was locked, I called the phone number and found out that I was at the factory. I checked Yelp for the retail location which was another 25 minutes away At the retail store the staff was very nice and the selection of desserts were plenty. I was only going to get a couple of things but ended up with: a peanut butter roll which is like a Ho-ho but much better, red velvet cake which is like a mini Ding-dong but also so much better (both had nice flavors, not too sweet - just right, more dense but moist), a peanut butter banana chocolate chip cookie that had that a nice blend of flavors and slightly chewy texture so great cookie, lemon bar (still need to eat), blueberry pop cake (still need to eat) and a monkey cinnamon apple roll which my wife loved the roll, cinnamon/sugar and apple taste, she heated it and said it was fabulous (so score a point for hubby). I parked almost in front of the store so that was a bonus since most locations in LA are hard to patronize since finding parking is horrendous. Most of the items are around $4 and up but definitely quality desserts. I will go there again even with the drive when I'm in LA again. read more

I have preserved last minute and they worked with me as much as possible to help me get a nice assortment of goodies. When it comes to pastries and breakfast treats Cake Monkey is so good. They have some really wonderful variety of tasty treats. I primarily go to their Fairfax location and sometimes Coffee Fix but the Noho commercial kitchen is convenient when you need a bulk order. Hands down the best "almond croissant" I ever had. And trust me I have sampled plenty in my day. From the crispy exterior due to being double baked to the wafery inside it is absolutely scrumptious. The almond glaze they use in the inside is so tasty and flavorful. I have tried an almond croissant at so many other bakeries only to have the same thought. There is no almond croissant better than Cake Monkey's. There pastries, cupcakes and desserts are not inexpensive though so I try not to indulge too often. read more

I really debated about giving a meh review because I want to support local business and the proceeds from what I purchased were going to a charity to benefit Ukraine. I waited until I ate two of the four items I purchased to give a fair review. I looked online at the menu and reviews here on Yelp and all I read were rave reviews about cakes ordered for birthdays, etc. it also wasn't super far from my apartment. As mentioned by others, this location has pre-wrapped small, hand cakes & cookies. The selection there was decent but not extensive (please see photo). Each cake was about $5, and one of the cakes was vegan. Bottom line: I expected so much more from what I bought. I purchased three hand cakes (chocolate & strawberry was vegan and I could not taste the strawberry jam) and one small chocolate cake roll (it was basically a Little Debbie Swiss Roll with peanut butter filling that tasted like granular sugar was the filling). I needed to get a cake a for a friend's baby shower and discovered that Porto's is no longer offering custom cakes. This ended up being a huge gain for me because it led to me calling Cake Monkey Bakery in North Hollywood. I spoke with Danielle who was lovely and so helpful. They aren't currently taking custom orders but I was able to choose the color of frosting and Danielle recommended some local businesses that sell cake toppers. I ordered a 10" brown butter chocolate cake with mint green Tahitian buttercream frosting. The cake was multi layered and delicious and well below the price point I was expecting. I can NOT be more disappointed in how this turned out, I am so mad I spent $65 on a 6inch cake that NO ONE ate or liked ... the cake was described to me as a "rich & delicious" and one of their popular cakes ..... the cake had no taste , it wasn't even sweet , it literally tasted like you were biting into a stick of butter! My husband decided to surprise me with some delicious treats since my quarantine birthday didn't go as planned! He ordered the red velvet and chocolate cakewich as well as a chocolate babka covered in toffee. The cakewiches had hard chocolately exteriors with soft moist interiors. They were so good, I am still dreaming about it! The chocolate babka is like a big loaf of sweet chocolate marble bread covered in toffee. I ate a couple of slices and froze the rest for later! I had been eyeing this bakery for some time. The photos online show the west LA location (which is what I believed I would see at the NOHO location). I should have done my homework. Nope. It is a warehouse in the middle of a shady neighborhood and a stone's throw from a pot dispensary. When we drove up, there were 2 customers waiting outside and the bakery wasn't open. A few minutes past 10:00 the door opened and the first customer was able to get his order and leave. The woman behind him was told they were still icing her order and could she come back in 20 minutes.. We were next. The 2 ladies in the store seemed frazzled but said they were packing up our order and disappeared inside. Leaving us alone. Meanwhile, 3 scary AF homeless people rolled by drinking in broad daylight. One was smoking pot and was angrily talking to no one. We did not feel safe. As the pot smoke wafted our way the ladies inside the bakery CLOSED THE DOOR and left us out there for FIFTEEN minutes while they "wrapped up our cake." We felt so unsafe we hopped in our car and waited in front of their door. The lady helping us seemed puzzled why we looked terrified in our car, I told her what happened and she kindly said "stay safe out there.. " and we were on our way. The cake was perfect. Everything we dreamed of and more. I wish they would open a normal store front in Magnolia Park. Burbank would love them and I'd be first in line. read more

So this is the only cake shop I have ever received a cake box with a sticker that says " they recommend eating the cake at room temperature " My opinion of this is because they use very cheap butter for the frosting and if eaten cold this cake sucks.
