When I want sweets, I usually go for like a chocolate bar or maybe ice cream, but I will always make a stop at Deja Vu when I am in the Studio City area. I had a hair appointment and my stylist, Evgenia told me about Deja Vu Cakes when I told her I was thinking of grabbing a sweet treat on the way home. She said she found a bakery that made fresh, homemade cupcakes with a whipped frosting that'll cure my sweet tooth. So homemade that once all the cupcakes are sold, the bakery closes, too. Then she really blew my mind and mentioned that they make an "Ube" cupcake and that's when I was sold. No one around here knows what "Ube" is! That's when I decided that I definitely had to go. She told me if I do stop in, to let her know if they have the Ube cupcake because if they do, she was going to stop by and grab a few. She said she was told that the Ube cupcake was seasonal and was going to be back around Mother's Day. The bakery is nestled in a small inline strip shopping center. There is parking but it's pretty tight. When you walk in, it's very welcoming and warm. The bakers, possibly owners will greet you when you come in. It was busy when I arrived as people where coming and going and I noticed almost all the cupcakes were gone. It was 5 pm though so I'm sure I arrived a couple hours before closing! We got the Crazy Carrot, Blueberry Cheesecake, Almond Lemon and Blueberry Lemon cupcakes. Holy Toledo, those cupcakes were moist, delicious and flavorful. The frosting was perfectly sweet. Every bite into each cupcake was heavenly. My favorite was the Crazy Carrot cupcake but all of them were luscious and yummy! I can't wait to visit again. I really want to try the Ube cupcake and all the other flavors that I saw. They have seasonal and holiday cupcakes so be sure to stop in during those times of the year for a tasteful, comforting treat! Oh, one more thing - DeJa Vu Cakes has pupcakes! Yes, safe to eat treats for your fur babies! The DeJa Vu Bareta pupcakes look like normal cupcakes and are made without sugar or any harmful ingredients. They are premium treats for your fur babies! You can even try a bite if you want to. I grabbed two of them. The puppers loved them! I have three little ones so I had to quarter each pupcake. A friends birthday had me wondering what dessert to bring to our small gathering. Looking over the menu options online, there were so many intriguing options! The in-person treatment really helped me to make the best selection. I was warmly greeted as soon as i entered the shop. Emil informed me which cupcakes were seasonal (top shelf), his faves, and the uniqueness of several. There was an emphasis of no artificial flavoring used to make any of the cupcakes. I appreciated that it was a genuine conversation rather than one focused on a transaction. Ultimately, I chose the white wine grape and cheese, chocolate expresso with fluffy panache, chocolate salted caramel, ube gold, crazy carrot, and Pistachio cupcake. The thing I love about these cupcakes is that there is versatility in the flavors they have and I could envision which friends would like certain cupcakes. Everyone loved the frosting on their cupcakes, noting that it was fluffy and not overly sweet. And all cupcakes were enjoyed with enthusiasm. The ones that were most commended were the ube, white wine grape, and chocolate expresso. The salted caramel was noted as being saltier than expected. I love the hospitality of a small local mom and pops store. I really enjoyed and grateful for all of the attention and information regarding the cupcakes that Emil provided. He first introduced himself by name, he explained that everything is made fresh in house and not from a cake box. He came around the display case and showed me the cupcakes that were popular. Once Rubina was available, he introduced me to her as well as mentioning she's the head baker. Friendly smiles, delicious cupcakes, and helpful. After I made my selection of the cupcakes, she mentioned how-to remove them from the packaging as well as mentioned one of the cupcakes is best served waiting a couple of minutes out of the frig. WORST CUPCAKES I HAVE EVER EATEN!! They are absolutely sickening. The ube icing tastes the way rotten milk smells. I LOVE ube normally so this was shocking. It actually tastes like it's rotten. I could not even bite into the actual cupcake. The red velvet was so dry, and dense that I needed to wash it down with the water. It also had no flavor. The cookie one was also insanely DRY, and the texture is like an old cake. This has truly been the most horrendous bakery I've ever tried, and I feel sick from the few bites I took.
