Love this cute little bakery and the owners! Backstory:After my dad's birthday dinner, my family and I had to sneak into the bakery nearby to pick up his cake without him knowing. But he eventually found us and I had to lie to him that I'm picking up a cake for my friends birthday and that we bought his already (I know I'm terrible). I had to get my mom to distract him and leave the bakery. This entire time we're coming off super weird to the lady behind the counter (the owner's daughter?), but we filled her in on the situation and she was on board to helping us discretely get his cake. She was super nice, energetic and helpful. She came up with code words like buying "cookies" for my friend instead of a cake in case my dad returned and she kept a look out while my parents were outside the store. I don't know about you all, but I don't encounter people like that often so I appreciate her for doing that and making us laugh along the way. We got a basic white icing fruit cake with red birthday lettering and some free candles. Let me tell you, this cake was delicious for this price!!! It was the perfect mix of fresh and sweet that you can honestly eat it all in one sitting. It was nice and fluffy/airy. I picked up two pork buns and an egg tart which tasted like any other one but still good. Whenever I'm in town and running behind on a cake, I'll definitely stop by again! read more

I went there to get a slice of fruit cake and I get home and try it and take a bite and it taste like straight alcohol so I thought that the fruit was fermenting but then I look at other peoples reviews and it says it has liquor in it, so I'm kind of confused. It was nasty. read more

I've been to this little bake shop ever since I was little, but I have felt the sanitary level of this place has gone way done. Not only did I discovered a bug in the cream roll about a month ago, just YESTERDAY I found another bug in my butter cream pastry. I honestly enjoy eating the goods they serve here, but having bugs in your food is really unappetizing. Plus, my family has visited this place many time, so I honestly trust the quality of the food they serve here. Very disappointing and questioning if I should go back there again. Also, the pastries are a little pricey, decent quality, but do like their butter creams on their little cakes. read more

Char Siu Bau was of the wet filling variety with onions. Delicious. Monstrous size.

Your typical Chinese bakery. I was told that this place has been open for quite some time now, which is made apparent by the aged decor and design of the store. We reserved a cake over the phone with the store owner's daughter, who was literally the sweetest person ever! We were running a little late for the pick-up and she even said she would stay past closing so that we get the cake in time. How thoughtful! We got their special mango mousse with napoleon cake and at $40+, I found it to be a bit pricey for what it's worth. For $40 I am thinking of a nicely crafted cake from TLJ/Paris Baguette, MAYBE even a cheap cartoon character fondant cake. But the cake we got here was literally just a plain old cake with no decorations. Taste was like your average Chinese bakery cake except there are a few extra layers of napoleon on top, which I feel didn't really add much to the cake. They could've at least added some custard in between the napoleon layers to make it a bit more unique. Overall, aside from the very friendly staff members, the cakes here are nothing special. read more

I have not used Yelp in ages, but I needed to get back on to write a review for Cake House! I started coming here last summer for their delicious fruit tarts... the best I have ever had! Refreshing and moist, a perfect afternoon pick me up or late night treat. Today I bought two full cakes, one mango and one special chocolate. Let me just say... they are HEAVEN! All of my guests loved the rich flavor without it being too sweet. Definitely coming back! read more

Interesting to read others' reviews before writing one's own. Uh, not wanting to be the black sheep here, but...the reason this ID bakery stands out in my mind is how extremely rude the servers were to me.... No reason for it, even if it's just about close-up-shop time...I inquired about a few items, as it was my first time patronizing. Didn't even get the feeling that they wanted my business, and had a heart to go, but sampled just a few items. After biting into them, I wasn't impressed by the boh lo bao (cocktail bun) or the gai may bao (coconut bun), at all. I had heard that Cake House was the place in Seatlle's Chinatown, but I would defiantly disagree. Pass, thanks... PS My benchmarks are the plethora of savory places in both SF and Oakland's Chinatowns. read more

Great quality! Do not get fooled by the humble look of the store. We got the coconut buns and loved it. Would recommend it.

Cake house is hands down the BEST chinese style bakery in Seattle. I've been here my entire life and have seen all the other places come and go, this place has stayed for a reason. The BBQ buns are also fresh and unlike other place they fill the entire bun with bbq pork.(most places try to be slick and only put a tiny bit.) the pineapple buns are also amazing, the tops have a nice crunch and the insides are soft. To the dumb-ass that gave this place a 1 star: this place has an EXCELLENT rating from King county food safety rating. Damn entitled hipsters like her ruined this city! This place is GOOOOOOOOD, don't listen to her dumb ass. read more

We love their chestnut cake! The owner is always consistent with his pastry. He's hard working and friendly. We ordered custom made cake from him for a few times and we are happy with the cakes every time. Definitely recommend ! read more

The most authentic HK pastry place in Seattle. The owner used to work at a famous HK bakery before coming over here so the stuff is really close to the original. Unfortunately, recently it seems the selection has decreased and he doesn't seem to make as many varieties as he used to. Some of the stuff I really like are the chicken puffs, curry puffs and sausage rolls. I don't think you can find them anywhere else. Secondly are the cake rolls in the middle display. He doesn't seem to make the walnut pound cake slices anymore. Third thing I like are the buns like cocktail buns. Selection seems to be down as well though it could just be the last time I went. Anyway, if you want authentic HK pastries like they made them 30 years ago, this is the place to be. (The other pastry place I like is no longer there, it's the one - can't remember the name - in the building that had a fire on the top floor in C-town a few years ago and they condemned it.) read more

This place is so great! My daughter and I wandered in about a week ago and had a really cool conversation with the lady at the counter. EVERYTHING is made in house, and has been since the place opened--she told me how long they'd been open, but I forgot--think in decades as opposed to years though, uts a generational family business. The fruit tart has 2 different shapes because there are customers that favor one shape over the other. Aside from that controversy, it is delicious, with just the right amount of custard to crust to fruit ratio. The custard buns are very good, we bought one after seeing all the photos and learning that it was so popular because it had been in a movie. My daughter got 2 cake slices, which I thought were good--but she didn't think were sweet enough (kids, am I right?) But the BEST thing we got was the cream horn. The not too sweet filling and super buttery, flaky pastry is going to have me going back there each time I'm in the neighborhood. read more

The rolls? They're ok... The cheescake? It's good... The cakes? Never had one yet but they are super cute and look delectable... So why 4 stars? THE TARTS! Omg, the tarts... Specifically the mango tarts. Buy like 19 of them. Shove their perfectly flaky crust, sweet custard and tangy mango/strawberry goodness in your mouth and get all sick and blissfully happy over the experience. Oh? and the price? That is the best part! Most single item goods are about $1.25, the schmanciest stuff going for $4. read more

I'm honestly not sure why people are giving this place such critical reviews. I think if you expect it to be something it's not, then ya, you're going to be disappointed. It isn't a flashy bakery with lots of drinks and a hundred items on the menu. What it is is a family-owned, Chinese dessert shop that serves tasty desserts with a basic cup of tea or coffee. As far as classic Chinese-style and more Western influenced Chinese desserts go, they do things pretty well. I grew up going to Cake House with my Chinese grandparents every weekend when I was a little kid. The owner is very nice, and remembers the customers who come into his shop. We would often sit there for a long time. Unlike some shop owners in Chinatown, he doesn't get impatient with you for staying. Cake House is really a gathering place, especially for the elders in the area. It always felt very homey and welcoming to me. It's simple, but it makes me happy every time I visit. A note: they only accept cash (credit card terminals break the backs of small businesses with outrageous fees), so make sure you have enough before you order! I don't usually carry cash, and I have been sad on the days when I walk in and realize I don't have enough cash on me. read more

Delicious homemade pastries! Loved the energy from the super friendly and helpful staff!! Would definitely recommend

We loved the coconut buns. They just came out of the oven and were warm and so delicious we had to come back and get more after we ate our first 2. Very friendly service. We will be back. read more

Don't expect too many pork or curry buns here, this is a solid Asian bakery that specializes in cakes, especially of the fresh cream fruit topped variety! The owner told me that they always carry a few chocolate, fresh mango and strawberry cakes as they are most popular. Pre-made whole cakes range from $22-26 and it's extra for any signage or special toppings. Slices are ~$3-4 and there's a lot more variety (black forest, cheesecake, etc). It is also the only place in the city that I was able to find a chestnut cream cake (worth a try if you're not into super sweet cakes). The cakes also stay good for up to 3-4 days after the day of purchase, although the "fresh" fruit toppings should be eaten right away. There are a few tables and chairs, but it isn't much of a cafe. The owners are super sweet, and they speak English, Cantonese and limited Mandarin. Aside from the shabby interior, I had a great experience read more

This is my favorite Chinese bakery in the Seattle Area. They make everything right, from the cocktail bun and fruit tarts, to their made to order cakes. Most everything is made fresh daily so you can be assured that its fresh and delicious when you get it. I always see a few grandpa regulars here so that must say something too. Definitely try their cocktail buns, and fruit tarts. Those are the two things i always get here. read more

First thing I noticed when I walked in (besides the baked goods) was a group of asian grannies and grandpas sitting at the 2 tables inside the small store. We popped our heads in around closing but the owner still welcomed us in and we quickly made our decisions - a fruit tart (with strawberry, kiwi, cantaloupe on top) for the bf and a blueberry tart for me (*note to self: go blueberry picking before the summer is over). A pile of ripe blueberries over a creamy base on a sweet crust... yummmm. Even though I wanted more for my sweet tooth, it was the perfect portion for an after dinner dessert. In 50 years time, I'll probably be one of those grannies chilling in the bakery. read more

Get the mango tarts, fresh fruit tarts - or whatever they're called: the assorted shell-filled pastries with custard and colorful fruits located on the display case on the right, towards the bottom - and you won't be disappointed. Order the coconut buns, curry puffs, and other whatnots, you'll just think this place is meh. Four stars for the tarts, two for the other stuff, hence the 3 stars. Nuff said. read more

I haven't been here for awhile and stopped by tonight to grab egg tarts and coconut tarts for my family... OH MY... quality def is horrible. There are two components to an egg tart... the crust and the filling. The crust should be flakey and i think they used cake mix... and the filling is supposed a very light custardy texture... well tonight. i think i had opaque yellow jell-o Anyways, I was very unimpressed for the products for my $7.. oh YEAH! wth? they charge me $7 for 5 things of tarts! read more

3 top things we get from this place: 1) curry pastry 2)fruit cake 3)coconut bun 1) curry pastry, fiance loves that there! Im not big on it but he adores it. Theres actual curry flavor to it, the crust is flaky which is impressive in my opinion and its reasonable priced. 2)fruit cake in my opinion is overly priced. A small round cake is $18! But I suppose with the fruit topping and filling its acceptable. We enjoy the fruit cake because both the filling/cream and cake is nice and lite. The cake isnt too dense at all and its moist. --Although the one we purchased yesterday, I noticed on the outter side of the cream seem to crust a little.. (the cake was still good). Btw, my fiance and I noticed pricing seem to be inconsistent too.. Im sure we get the same cake everytime (probably 3 times now) but for some reason, the last 2 times the pricing was different. ? I paid $18 yesterday, fiance was sure he paid $22 maybe few months prior. Idk, fruits gone cheaper? Eh, im not complaining; I mean I didn't pay the $22. =) 3) coconut bun is usually the only thing I get at a chinese bakery. I love how it taste at cake house. I think the sweetness is perfect. Not too sweet and not too bland. Although I find the filling to be inconsistent, if they could spread the filling throughout then its a A+ winner. Be prepared, they take cash only! So sux for me, a plastic card holder. read more

Ordered a mango cake for a team member's birthday at 9am and it was ready after 3 hours. Everybody loved the cake!

Passed by this place on my way back to my car after eating at Honeycourt and randomly decided to try it out. It was kind of small with little selection (maybe because it was near the end of the day), but I don't mind at all since everything is so tasty! I really liked the "chicken pie" - it's more like a hand pie baked with a crispy flaky crust. I wasn't sure what to expect since it didn't look very special, but oh my, so delicious! read more

Cash only, but I had the best blueberry tart in my life. The owner said its seasonal (its summer) but I wish it was year round. All of the blueberries were great, not a single overly sour one. The filling was amazing and the crust was perfect, not too sweet and not too dry. 10/10 would recommend it to anyone and everyone. The owner is super friendly and I'm definitely going back. Would eat if everyday if I could. read more

Two Words... CHICKEN PIE. I have been going to this joint for years and have never had a bad experience. First thing in the mornings I go here instead of that local place that sold my Basketball Team. The Chicken Pies are small, super flaky and worth every penny of the 1.70$ my man charges. They are warm in the mornings and just dissolve when you eat them. They seem to have like 50 layers of thin, crispy, flaky crust and filled with a minced chicken thats to DIE for. I bring them to all my friends when in the neighborhood and nobody ever has disliked them.... A DEFINITE MUST TRY! read more

Chinese bakeries always makes me happy. Growing up in San Francisco, I have vivid memories with my dad at the bakeries. My dad would get a Chinese sugar coated puff doughnut and he would order me a Chinese sponge cake. Nowadays, I still get a kick out of ordering one. Though Chinese food don't come to par with SF or Vancouver, BC quality, it's still good. (You get what you can...) What I like about Piece of Cake is their cake selection. I love Chinese cakes. They beat American cakes any day and anytime for their texture, freshness, and sweetness. American cakes often have too much icing, too dense, and the proportion of cake and icing ratio is uneven. Chinese cakes on the other hand is perfect for me. Here are some variation that I like... Fresh mango, mixed fruit, taro, fresh strawberries etc. are sliced and put on top and middle of the cake. Instead of icing they use a lighter and fluffier type, sorta like cool whip. The cake texture is fluffier and goes well with the fresh fruit. Every bite is guarantee equal amount of fresh fruit, cake, and icing. Yum! Here are some other bakery favorites of mine: 1. Egg tart- Yum! Sounds weird, but it's good... kinda like a quiche, but not. 2. Cocktail bun- Love the coconut in the middle. 3. Pineapple/Coconut bun- love the flaky stuff on top and coconut in the middle. 4. Winter Melon cake (aka Wife cake)- flaky crust, soft inside. 5. Curry beef turnover 6. Coffee or chocolate creme roll 7. Both steam or baked bbq pork bun 8. Chinese sponge cake- it's like angel food cake, but less sweet and more fluffy. You often see them in a conical shape and baked in a piece of paper. Price: Everything is less than $1-2, except the creme roll and Chinese cake is more. Ordering your cake: I would pre-order your cake to get the freshest quality. They do have daily cakes available, but they could run out of them. As for price... it's a bit more than American cakes. Note: Get these pastries at their prime time (morning). The place is usually filled with Chinese elders chit chatting about local news and gossip. All waiting for the freshest bakeries. (You know it'll be good!) Enjoy! read more

I love their fruit tarts and their cake but nothing compares to their large coconut bun when it is still warm. Delicious.

Best buns on the west coast, I swear. Definitely in the PNW. The first time I came here I had a tart and the first thing I noticed was the extremely fresh fruit! Piled high on top of a great filling it was super great and a pleasant shock to bite into. Next thing I got was a custard bun. Another pleasant shock. Nice and chewy with flavorful, but not sickening sweet custard. When I looked at the filling it was SO YELLOW! More egg yolk, better egg yolks, maybe it's both but it's just simply the best. I simply can't eat other buns now. They all taste like Wonder bread with filling compared to these. To put the cherry on top, the owners are so sweet! They remember what you've tried (and what you need to try) and what you always need. Just remember cash! read more
