Love this cute little bakery and the owners! Backstory:After my dad's birthday dinner, my family and I had to sneak into the bakery nearby to pick up his cake without him knowing. But he eventually found us and I had to lie to him that I'm picking up a cake for my friends birthday and that we bought his already (I know I'm terrible). I had to get my mom to distract him and leave the bakery. This entire time we're coming off super weird to the lady behind the counter (the owner's daughter?), but we filled her in on the situation and she was on board to helping us discretely get his cake. She was super nice, energetic and helpful. She came up with code words like buying "cookies" for my friend instead of a cake in case my dad returned and she kept a look out while my parents were outside the store. I don't know about you all, but I don't encounter people like that often so I appreciate her for doing that and making us laugh along the way. We got a basic white icing fruit cake with red birthday lettering and some free candles. Let me tell you, this cake was delicious for this price!!! It was the perfect mix of fresh and sweet that you can honestly eat it all in one sitting. It was nice and fluffy/airy. Been coming to Cake House since the 90's for 2 items; coconut buns and sponge cakes. I honestly didn't even know it was named Cake House till last week. I just called it the bakery with the coconut buns the last 25 years. While Cake House makes many other varieties of cakes, buns and cookies, which I'm sure are great, I'm a creature of habit and can't go without my coconut bun and sponge cake. What makes the coconut buns the best is the coconut filling. Generous amounts sweet and creamy coconut paste, without being too sweet. Even a day later when they are hard and dried out, blast them in the microwave for 20 seconds and they come back to life like a Krispy Kreme. The sponge cake is always soft and moist. Makes a great, cheap snack if you're heading to the stadiums. The family that works there is are always so nice and friendly. Prices are cheap, but CASH ONLY. The fruit cakes here are moist, topped with really fresh fruit and lots of cream. I'm not a huge fruit cake fan, but I ordered one for my boyfriend's birthday (his absolute favorite kind of cake) and everyone loved it! For a round cake that serves 12, it came to about $35-40, which isn't bad at all. This place deserves 5 stars, only because everyone who ate it complimented and asked me where I got it. I've been to this little bake shop ever since I was little, but I have felt the sanitary level of this place has gone way done. Not only did I discovered a bug in the cream roll about a month ago, just YESTERDAY I found another bug in my butter cream pastry. I honestly enjoy eating the goods they serve here, but having bugs in your food is really unappetizing. Plus, my family has visited this place many time, so I honestly trust the quality of the food they serve here. Very disappointing and questioning if I should go back there again. Your typical Chinese bakery. I was told that this place has been open for quite some time now, which is made apparent by the aged decor and design of the store. We reserved a cake over the phone with the store owner's daughter, who was literally the sweetest person ever! We were running a little late for the pick-up and she even said she would stay past closing so that we get the cake in time. How thoughtful! We got their special mango mousse with napoleon cake and at $40+, I found it to be a bit pricey for what it's worth. For $40 I am thinking of a nicely crafted cake from TLJ/Paris Baguette, MAYBE even a cheap cartoon character fondant cake. But the cake we got here was literally just a plain old cake with no decorations. Taste was like your average Chinese bakery cake except there are a few extra layers of napoleon on top, which I feel didn't really add much to the cake. They could've at least added some custard in between the napoleon layers to make it a bit more unique. Uh, not wanting to be the black sheep here, but...the reason this ID bakery stands out in my mind is how extremely rude the servers were to me.... No reason for it, even if it's just about close-up-shop time...I inquired about a few items, as it was my first time patronizing. Didn't even get the feeling that they wanted my business, and had a heart to go, but sampled just a few items. After biting into them, I wasn't impressed by the boh lo bao (cocktail bun) or the gai may bao (coconut bun), at all. I had heard that Cake House was the place in Seatlle's Chinatown, but I would defiantly disagree. Pass, thanks... Cake house is hands down the BEST chinese style bakery in Seattle. I've been here my entire life and have seen all the other places come and go, this place has stayed for a reason. The BBQ buns are also fresh and unlike other place they fill the entire bun with bbq pork.(most places try to be slick and only put a tiny bit.) the pineapple buns are also amazing, the tops have a nice crunch and the insides are soft. The most authentic HK pastry place in Seattle. The owner used to work at a famous HK bakery before coming over here so the stuff is really close to the original. Unfortunately, recently it seems the selection has decreased and he doesn't seem to make as many varieties as he used to. Some of the stuff I really like are the chicken puffs, curry puffs and sausage rolls. I don't think you can find them anywhere else. Secondly are the cake rolls in the middle display. He doesn't seem to make the walnut pound cake slices anymore. Third thing I like are the buns like cocktail buns. Selection seems to be down as well though it could just be the last time I went. Anyway, if you want authentic HK pastries like they made them 30 years ago, this is the place to be. This place is so great! My daughter and I wandered in about a week ago and had a really cool conversation with the lady at the counter. EVERYTHING is made in house, and has been since the place opened--she told me how long they'd been open, but I forgot--think in decades as opposed to years though, uts a generational family business. The fruit tart has 2 different shapes because there are customers that favor one shape over the other. Aside from that controversy, it is delicious, with just the right amount of custard to crust to fruit ratio. The custard buns are very good, we bought one after seeing all the photos and learning that it was so popular because it had been in a movie. My daughter got 2 cake slices, which I thought were good--but she didn't think were sweet enough (kids, am I right?) But the BEST thing we got was the cream horn. I'm honestly not sure why people are giving this place such critical reviews. I think if you expect it to be something it's not, then ya, you're going to be disappointed. It isn't a flashy bakery with lots of drinks and a hundred items on the menu. What it is is a family-owned, Chinese dessert shop that serves tasty desserts with a basic cup of tea or coffee. As far as classic Chinese-style and more Western influenced Chinese desserts go, they do things pretty well. I grew up going to Cake House with my Chinese grandparents every weekend when I was a little kid. The owner is very nice, and remembers the customers who come into his shop. We would often sit there for a long time. Unlike some shop owners in Chinatown, he doesn't get impatient with you for staying. Cake House is really a gathering place, especially for the elders in the area. It always felt very homey and welcoming to me. It's simple, but it makes me happy every time I visit. A note: they only accept cash (credit card terminals break the backs of small businesses with outrageous fees), so make sure you have enough before you order! Don't expect too many pork or curry buns here, this is a solid Asian bakery that specializes in cakes, especially of the fresh cream fruit topped variety! The owner told me that they always carry a few chocolate, fresh mango and strawberry cakes as they are most popular. Pre-made whole cakes range from $22-26 and it's extra for any signage or special toppings. Slices are ~$3-4 and there's a lot more variety (black forest, cheesecake, etc). It is also the only place in the city that I was able to find a chestnut cream cake (worth a try if you're not into super sweet cakes). The cakes also stay good for up to 3-4 days after the day of purchase, although the "fresh" fruit toppings should be eaten right away. There are a few tables and chairs, but it isn't much of a cafe. First thing I noticed when I walked in (besides the baked goods) was a group of asian grannies and grandpas sitting at the 2 tables inside the small store. We popped our heads in around closing but the owner still welcomed us in and we quickly made our decisions - a fruit tart (with strawberry, kiwi, cantaloupe on top) for the bf and a blueberry tart for me (*note to self: go blueberry picking before the summer is over). Passed by this place on my way back to my car after eating at Honeycourt and randomly decided to try it out. It was kind of small with little selection (maybe because it was near the end of the day), but I don't mind at all since everything is so tasty! Piled high on top of a great filling it was super great and a pleasant shock to bite into. Next thing I got was a custard bun. Another pleasant shock. Nice and chewy with flavorful, but not sickening sweet custard. When I looked at the filling it was SO YELLOW! More egg yolk, better egg yolks, maybe it's both but it's just simply the best. I waited around for my turn and threw a couple of glances in the kitchen, which was a mistake, as cleanliness plays a huge factor in my overall dessert satisfaction (cuz I prefer not to get raging diarrhea after enjoying a meal). Doubt was now forming in my head, but the mango cake was within reach so I toughed it out and told the gentleman behind the counter i'd take their last one. Two Words... CHICKEN PIE. I have been going to this joint for years and have never had a bad experience. First thing in the mornings I go here instead of that local place that sold my Basketball Team. The Chicken Pies are small, super flaky and worth every penny of the 1.70$ my man charges. They are warm in the mornings and just dissolve when you eat them. They seem to have like 50 layers of thin, crispy, flaky crust and filled with a minced chicken thats to DIE for. Chinese bakeries always makes me happy. Growing up in San Francisco, I have vivid memories with my dad at the bakeries. My dad would get a Chinese sugar coated puff doughnut and he would order me a Chinese sponge cake. Nowadays, I still get a kick out of ordering one. Though Chinese food don't come to par with SF or Vancouver, BC quality, it's still good. (You get what you can...) What I like about Piece of Cake is their cake selection. I love Chinese cakes. They beat American cakes any day and anytime for their texture, freshness, and sweetness. American cakes often have too much icing, too dense, and the proportion of cake and icing ratio is uneven. Chinese cakes on the other hand is perfect for me. Here are some variation that I like... Fresh mango, mixed fruit, taro, fresh strawberries etc. are sliced and put on top and middle of the cake. Instead of icing they use a lighter and fluffier type, sorta like cool whip. The cake texture is fluffier and goes well with the fresh fruit. Every bite is guarantee equal amount of fresh fruit, cake, and icing. Yum! Here are some other bakery favorites of mine: 1. Egg tart- Yum! Sounds weird, but it's good... kinda like a quiche, but not. 2. Cocktail bun- Love the coconut in the middle. 3. Pineapple/Coconut bun- love the flaky stuff on top and coconut in the middle. 4. Winter Melon cake (aka Wife cake)- flaky crust, soft inside. 5. Curry beef turnover 6. Coffee or chocolate creme roll 7. Both steam or baked bbq pork bun 8. Chinese sponge cake- it's like angel food cake, but less sweet and more fluffy. You often see them in a conical shape and baked in a piece of paper. Price: Everything is less than $1-2, except the creme roll and Chinese cake is more. Ordering your cake: I would pre-order your cake to get the freshest quality. They do have daily cakes available, but they could run out of them. As for price... it's a bit more than American cakes. Note: Get these pastries at their prime time (morning). The place is usually filled with Chinese elders chit chatting about local news and gossip. All waiting for the freshest bakeries. (You know it'll be good!) Enjoy! read more
