This review is for the Cafe Pyrus Outpost location. Also, Cafe Pyrus has moved to a new King Street location recently. I came across the Outpost location while walking along one of KW's many walking paths and had to check it out. I've been following Cafe Pyrus on Instagram and had the restaurant saved on Yelp for a while but hadn't had the opportunity to go since I'm never in that area. I think the new location is a lot more accessible and the outpost is really great. I also discovered it's the meeting place for a community walk and talk which is nice. I was out walking my dog and the staff offered her a treat which I though was so kind. Definitely is a dog friendly spot and they have picnic bench seating available if you choose to stay there to enjoy your treat(s). The Outpost had drinks, snacks, and assorted baked goods. It can be a little difficult to read the board, but the staff are very friendly and will help recommend something great. I opted for a coffee and a Nanaimo bar which was heavenly! Usually I stay away from Nanaimo bars (even though they're my favourite) because of the insane amount of dairy in them, so finding a vegan option made me so happy! My boyfriend opted for the sausage roll and he couldn't even tell it wasn't meat. He loved it so much he went back and got a second one. Since then, I've been back once again and opted for a chocolate croissant and coffee the second time. The chocolate was amazing and the croissant itself was flakey but the flavour wasn't my favourite - just a personal preference, you may love it! If you're looking for a vegan and/or gluten free option, this is the place for you! Even if you're not, everything is delicious and you should check it out! read more

Pretty neat place. Bunch of vegan options and prices are fair. The packaging is A+, as they don't use any plastic at all. We ordered taco salad, The Reuben Soho and mango creamsicle. They were all pretty good and the portion size was great for the salad. Will visit again sometime soon! read more

As someone who makes and drinks green smoothies on the daily at home, I usually do not order them when out. Not sure why I craved another one that day, but the one at cafe pyrus is phenomenal. It may be the combination with coconut water and hemp seeds, which added a very satisfying and refreshing overall flavour. Gave me inspiration for recipes at home. The breakfast sandwich with the tempeh bacon, "egg", and vegan cheese was also delicious. Had the typical greasy in the best way breakfast joint feel. I'll definitely be coming by again. Very good food and ambiance. Definitely to be visited if you are looking for good vegan treats - even if you are closer to the Toronto area, it's worth the drive. We started off with the Latte and Lavander Steamer. Both were really good, especially the Lavander Steamer was excellent. For the food, we went for their Rueben Soho with Kaleslaw, The Burger with Chips and Waffles. I liked the Rueben Soho but Kaleslaw is actually excellent - a great combination with the sandwich. The burger was good too. The patty was great and the crisps at the bottom was a very good idea. Waffles were good as well but serving it on a paper base is probably not a good idea since it is something you eat with a knife. Having said that, the taste was great. I wish we had stopped there but we also went for a scone and a coffee (medium roast) on a takeaway. While the scone didn't impress us at all - very doughy and didn't taste much fresh - the coffee was average too. The ambiance is great. Plenty of seating space and options. I guess the best one would be the one we took facing the main road with a view of the Charles Street Transit Terminal - even on a cloudy day, it is still the best place. Great place to relax and maybe read a book. The staff is really good and friendly. Once you order, they give you this animal toy for the server to identify the right table. The place is good for large groups as well - and definitely to go for a weekend breakfast/brunch. Parking can be an issue since there is limited parking nearby - free on weekends - but otherwise, I guess may be able to park at the station or on the streets nearby. read more

9 of us were at U WLoo and it was lunch time. Somebody suggested pizza and I was OK, but one of the locals suggested CP. it was Monday of the Labour Day weekend and lucky for us they were open. The place was busy considering the whole downtown Kitchener looked deserted. The orders once placed on the counter we got them very quickly - almost like a quick serve restaurant which was very surprising. We ordered quite a few stuff and we tried to mixup a few so that we could taste as much as possible. I personally ordered a Big Bang with Soup (the board said "Tomato and a few other things", so glad that this a Vegan friendly restaurant) and Chai Shake. The Chai Shake was 4.5/5. The subtle balanced taste of Chai and Bananas. We are not tea drinkers and this was perfect for me us. Not too sweet and too almond milk taste. Wish it was nice and cold, it was at best room temperature. The Bung Bang Tofu nicely crusted and seasoned. The toppings not so much. The Dill Aioli was weak and hot sauce as good as not there. The Soup was again room temperature which was a big downer for us. The taste was spicy - perhaps a lot of black peppers. It would have been perfect it was hot. 3.5/5 for the entire meal. The sandwich- 5/5. The kale slaw seemed a better option as I peaked at other orders. Tasted quite a few other things, like the Angry Vegan - nothing angry about it. The Taco Salad fairly good. The Mango Creamsicle was OK (Too little mangoes in the smoothie). The Reuben Soho with Tempeh was OK. The Tempeh, again not one of our favourites and perhaps that played a role. All in all a good restaurant and so glad that such an option exists in Kitchener. read more

When I first discovered this place, I thought it was the best! I've tried their tacos and fell in love with their vanilla Roobis tea. Unfortunately, the last couple of times I've been in, it has missed the mark for me. Perhaps it can be written off as Covid Related. I dont think so though... Today I ordered their club salad. It was tasty, tempeh bacon is really delicious. I did not enjoy what I can only describe as gobs of mayo.... oh, it was their aioli, which is essentially mayo... oh. Huh! Well, I would certainly not order this salad again, as the aioli was a bit much for me & my stomach, the texture of it in my mouth was also not a good one, as it felt like gobs of fat. And contributed to me feeling nauseous. Thankfully, I also ordered a peppermint tea. I placed it in my thermos, which kept it hot well after ordering. This place was where I first discovered the Booch, kombouchas, which I have easily come to claim as my favourite Kombouchas out there. Thankyou Cafe Pyrus! I dont know if the novelty of this place has worn out for me. I'd like to think it certainly does still have some experiences left. However, I am also ready to try new places too. I love that they're right downtown. Cafe Pyrus would easily be the first place I'd hit up, when I got off the bus from toronto. So, a landmark of a cafe for sure, for me. And their ethos is also pretty fantastic. I like that they're eco-friendly and support/run their own small and quaint farmers market on Saturday, at the Laurel Trail location. What a great gem of a place. Delicious vegan food with full flavour and none of the overcompensating salting. We popped in for breakfast and had a waffle and a club sandwich. Both were delicious and I must say the club sandwich really filed me up. Excellent prices as well as both meals and a coffee and latter were still under $25. Fast prep, courteous service, pleasant and simple yet warm ambiance, and truly delicious food. We will be back! read more

I am a big fan of their bacon tempeh! Came here for lunch recently and ordered their "basic" on a panini (which came with cheese, tomato, guacamole, and bacon tempeh and I think other ingredients) and it was sooooo good. You can alternatively get the toppings on a salad instead but they suggested the panini was best. I've been thinking about that bacon tempeh ever since. As a side note I'm not even vegetarian. To me, it doesn't really resemble the taste or texture of bacon but it's still just super delicious. The basic is around $10 after tax and I felt full after just having that. Also the overall vibe of the cafe is awesome, there's a lot of local art on display and some cool local KW stickers and shirts for sale. They also use these cute plastic toy animals as table markers haha. Will definitely come back for more tempeh in the future! read more

I've visited here many times and I've always had a great experience! I always get a latte and have their rotating komucha on tap! Super refreshing! I tend to stick with the same sandwich called, "The Angry Vegan" that included and organic panini stuffed with organic tempeh, canalized onion, tomato, artichoke spread, daiya cheese and your choice of soup or kaleslaw. I always get the slaw and it's so crunchy and refreshing after getting into that rich sandwich! They have great smoothie/shakes and lots of different coffee's and tea's to choose from! I have not been much of a fan of vegan/vegetarian only places but I do enjoy the food here. There is a large selection of tasty food. I have only tried a few things here but I must say that my favorites have become the Club and the ALT sandwiches. The also have fresh Kombucha on tap and in bottles. The tap is fresh and crisp and nicely chilled. The desserts are exceptional to say the least. Over all I would highly recommend this place to everyone I know...in fact I have a few friends that have never been here and have loved for all the options they have when one is either vegan or vegetarian. read more

Neat little spot right across from Charles Terminal. I tried their burger with chips. I quite liked it. Their patty was slightly juicy but didn't taste like meat. It was a nice veggie burger made with a mash or tempeh and other veggies. The patty had the smooth texture that veggie patties typically have. I thought their chips had a little bit too much black pepper for my taste. The overall ambience was quite nice. Very hip and trendy with the mismatched chairs, fireplace, and unique animal table markers. Love their mission statement and love the energy. Would definitely come again. read more

This is a review for Café Pyrus' delivery through OneLocal. I ordered some cinnamon buns to an address in Waterloo. Café Pyrus is 1 of an extremely small set of cafes/bakeries that offer delivery for a small sized order of baked goods in Waterloo/Kitchener. I started my search for a delivery place, got a bunch of results for pizza and Asian food. Despite the deliciousness of both those things, I needed somewhere that would deliver baked goods (but not for catering!). I searched Café Pyrus' Instagram to find a picture of what I wanted to order for delivery, it was up to date and beautiful. Then I went through OneLocal to place my order. The order experience was seamless and visually appealing. Delivery wise, a little disappointing. Although I know offering delivery for small batches of baked goods is rare, but it would be nice to have an update on where the goods are in the delivery process. Have they been picked up from the cafe? Have they been delivered? This is especially relevant if they are for someone who has not placed the order themselves. Sort of unreliable in that aspect. There's also a disconnect with the extra information (buzzer code etc) that someone puts into the delivery form and what the delivery person actually receives. Not sure where the disconnect happens but it should definitely be fixed. If there's extra information that someone puts into the order, it's there for a reason. To end off on a good note, the customer service over the phone was really good and they handled the postponing of my delivery (and syncing with their external delivery folk) since they ran out of the items that I had ordered (as it was later in the day) pretty well. read more

Cafe Pyrus has really good comfort food that is vegetarian and vegan friendly. It is a cozy cafe with wifi, great for working and studying. The breakfast griller is an excellent breakfast sandwich, and the A.L.T is surprisingly filling. I have enjoyed every meal that I've had here so far. The drinks are also excellent. I recommend the lavender steamer if you're looking for a warm, caffeine-free drink! read more

This is my go to cafe all 2 times I've needed it in Kitchener. It's only 1 of 2 places I've seen "bulletproof" style coffee and now the second ever time I've been able to add lavender to my coffee. (Recommended). The vibes are awesome here and super chill for that study and work grind. read more

As far as KW and vegan/vegetarian goes, cafe pyrus is a gem! The atmosphere is great for hanging out. They always have good music on and a good selection of games to play. There are couches and comfy chairs too. The food is great! The pad Thai (which was off the menu last time i was there, but told it was coming back soon) is amazing. So delish! You can have it with just veggies, or add tempeh. They have quite a few sanwhiches which as far as Ive tried are awesome. They have a variety off hot drinks too, which are great. If you're veggie, vegan, or just want a good affordable meal i would most defiantly check this place out! On a side note, as Cafe Pyrus has grown as a resturant and hang out spot, the vibe is odd, and seems off to me. It has become the local 'hipster' hang out. Full of ironic mustaches and cat tattoos. What a great find! After reading so many glowing reviews I finally ventured downtown and tried out the Reuben SOHO and was so happy with this choice. The sandwich was so tasty and fresh. Glad to see that they use the locally made Henry's Tempeh. Had the kale slaw which was magnificent! Now I'll have to drop by the Outpost location which is closer to home. read more

Walked in without knowing I was in a vegan restaurant, ordered the rueben soho and mushroom soup. One bite in I knew I wasn't eating a normal sandwich. It was like nothing I ever tasted but still somehow a rueben. The creamy avocado and flavourful tempeh nearly melted in my mouth. By the time I knew what I was eating it was too late, I was addicted. I love the actual environment and location of this cafe. Everyone was super sweet and friendly there. I think it's a good space to study and work on something and sit with a coffee. They have lots of options as well. I tried the banana bread when I went and wasn't a huge fan of it personally. The space doubles as a small gallery with comfy sofas for hanging out and tables with conveniently located electric outlets for work. I really like it. Stopped by here before leaving Loo. I was waiting for the greyhound with my girlfriend and we decided to grab a bit of food. Cafe pyrus was the only thing available and it was definitely worth it. The service was great as the staff are attentive and very knowledgeable. I order the Wrap with tempeh. I have a love for this vegetarian source of protein. Great vegan café in downtown Kitchener. The coffee here is excellent, and you should try the double chocolate muffins. They're vegan, so they must be healthy, right? The vibe is easy-going and the decor is tasteful. The seating is a mix of a comfy couch area, little round tables, and several large desk-style tables with conveniently accessible electrical outlets. I have been to this location twice and both were great. I have enjoyed the taco salad, chai tea latte, and the hot chocolate. The HC is amazing and tastes like it is made from cocoa. The atmosphere is fun and light. As other reviews have said, it does give off some hipster vibes. Also, they sell local art inside as well, which, although expensive, is interesting to look at. Fairly expensive and the food is definitely sub-par. The coffee is just okay and for the prices they charge it should definitely be a higher quality as well. The entire vegan atmosphere is extremely overpowering and the clientele is a little rough quite a lot of the time.
