I guess you can say I have a soft spot for HK style cafes and I mean cafe in a literal sense. To me there's a huge difference between a Chinese restaurant and a cafe. These are the types of spots I frequently visit every time I'm in HK or Macau, I like the western touch to it I suppose. I also enjoy a good baked dish which for such a large Chinese community in the Bay Area, we severely lack these types of cafe or quality cafe. I honestly believe I'm giving this place a better rating due to the lack of quality HK style cafes in the Bay Area. I've been coming here frequently since working in Millbrae, and I don't have anything bad to say about it. I like their Saturn pork chop, their curry chicken isn't bad, and their baked pork chop is good. As for drinks, their milk tea is good. As far as service is concern, it's a non-issue. Actually, the rating has more to do with the fact that this place reminds me of what VIP on Broadway used to be and I'm sure there's some connection there with the owners. It's not the greatest, it's not the best, but it's a quality HK style cafe. read more

We've been here a couple of times, I don't love it here, but they do have some good deals. Their deals and food are not as good as some other places, but if you are just looking for a quick bite, it's not bad either. Millbrae has quite a few Hong Kong Fast Food style restaurants, and Cafe Orchid is quite new, and although it doesn't offer the best food, it seems to be busy. We both ordered a meal that came with a cup of Milk Tea and Sweet Buns. I got the Pork Chop with the Sweet Corn Sauce over Spaghetti for $8.50 and my hubby ordered the Sizzling Rib Eye with Tomato Sauce over Rice for $12.99. His meal also came with the Soup of the Day, it was actually Cream of Corn, but it was really salty so I put some of his soup into my pasta and used it as additional sauce! Overall, our meal was okay, not great, just okay. Some may question why I even come here if I don't really like it, but everytime I come here , I hope to pick that one dish that I will love at this place. I just haven't tasted it yet. read more

It's a nice neighborhood cafe! I like their baked pork chop with rice. It's super yummy! The flat iron steak is a great deal, too. read more

I work nearby so I love getting to go food from there. I know it's nothing special; you can get similar stuffs from any HK style cafe. You can't complain much about it, especially their baked rice/spaghetti. But the portion I got for their French toast drew the line. $4.50 for a piece of thin slice of toast. Yep, 1 piece of toast that barely had any eggs on!? I'm a size 4 and have small hands and that piece of toast was smaller than my hand!! And by thin, I meant it was only half an inch thin. What cafe sell food like that!? While all other cafe would generously give two big pieces of toast that would be nicely cut into 4 big triangle, this is embarrassing to be called a French Toast. I could use $4.50 plus tax to get two loaves of cheap bread! Cafe Orchid is just a huge disappointment and embarrassment to be called a cafe. I would have given 0 star if I could. read more

The food is decent but service not so much (or I should say order taking ability). Placed 4 items today, I said one of the items' order number four times because it sounded like she kept repeating the wrong dish back to me, the very last time she acknowledged so I figured all ok, but I was wrong. Went and sure enough the order was incorrect. She insisted that she repeated the order back to me and I was wrong. I was in a hurry so I settled - didn't ask to replace with the correct dish. If you are ordering to go, make sure you repeat and repeat and repeat and CHECK YOUR ORDER! read more

There is no wow factor about this place. Our first visit was tempered by the cashier error. She can not add or do any math what so ever! Our bill came out to be $8 dollars overstated and we went back and forth with this....customers is always right!!!!! Second visit was better, but the food tasted very bland. Nothing to be excited about. The wontons (should be the basics/stable dish from a cafe) tasted rock hard.....soup was tasteless.... hummm, so conclusion, there will be no third attempt to this place. One star for being clean and one star for being new! read more

This is a cafe, plain and simply. Food is fast, good and the price reasonable. The place may be small and parking difficult however you get good food. Breakfast combo of chow mein & porridge is just right if you don't want to wait an hour for dim sum. Then the baked pork chop over rice or even spagetti is great for quick lunch. This cafe is great because i get to call in and order take out when i don't want to wait for table or parking. Overall i call in for lunch take out during the busy weekdays while i dine in for weekend easy breakfast. read more

Came here on a Thursday afternoon and got seated right away. Ordered the baked pork chop with spaghetti. Good but next time will ask them to add cheese. Reminded me of VIP early 2000s. Curry chicken and rice. The chicken and rice was kinda tough but the curry had the perfect amount of heat to it. I would come back for the curry with another meat. And the baked pork chop. read more

Their Hainanese chicken is so horrifying!! It's got black hairs on the skin and it's NOT de-boned - of course tastes nothing like Hainanese either. Other dishes are hit and miss. The Baked Pork Chop is a safe choice and the HK style milk tea are really good on some days. read more

What a spectacular failure. I ordered a black pepper beef steak combo and they gave me chicken... to make it worse, it's served on a hot iron plate and it was so hot, my chicken was completely charred on one side. Normally I wouldn't care, just cut off the burnt skin, but it was so burnt that any part of the chicken underneath the skin was also extremely bitter. Never again. read more

The baked meat spaghetti is very good. Cheap eat for only $5.95. Good causal place to go. My very picky husband loves the baked items here. Yummy!!!! read more

Bad parking. Very dirty rear entrance. No air-conditioning. Food was not that great. No fire safety alarm. Restroom is so dirty and smelly. Sorry, but there are so many choices in Millbrae and this is not one of the ones I will recommend to my friends. Until they improve on the above mentioned reviews, no way I'm going back to this place. read more

Two stars instead of one given solely because the chow mein was alright and no super dry like a lot of places. However, the service was terrible to the point of it seemed like the waitress was purposely not looking up into the restaurant unless she had to to bring out food. Boyfriend's food was brought after maybe 20 minutes. My order shows up another 15 or so minutes later, but it's the wrong item. I had to get up and go over to let the waitress know as she wouldn't look up or respond if she was nearby. In between switching my wrong order for the correct one, we received our "appetizer." Also, this place is cash only. They didn't tell us beforehand and we saw no signs, so that's just unnecessary issues running to get cash after a terrible meal. read more

Located a block from the Millbrae Bart/Caltrain station, this place is a quaint hole in the wall. A bit hard to find as its tiny size and small sign (wedged between a massage parlor and gas station) makes it almost completely hidden. Everything here was just alright. Not that great but not bad either. I ordered the $7 lunch special and chose the baked pork chop which came with an iced HK milk tea. The portion was small as expected for the price.. perfect portioning for kids though! The milk tea was kind of bland as well. The place was pretty small and only seats maybe 24 people total. They didn't have any outlets except for one which was really hard to use because of the booth seat in the way. CASH ONLY so be prepared for that! read more

If I am correct, this is run by some of the previous crews of the infamous VIP Coffee & Cake Shop in San Francisco China Town, which many of my friends grew up eating there during their childhood. The food in Cafe Orchid is somewhat similar to the VIP Coffee & Cake Shop -- like the HK style pork chop rice, milk tea, egg & ham sandwich, etc. I still like the food in the 'original' VIP Coffee & Cake Shop better; but if I am in the Millbrae area and want some HK style cafe food, I would go to Cafe Orchid. read more

They made us wait 35 minutes for a baked pork tenderloin over rice & we didn't even end up getting it because they forgot to put down the order... told us that 30 minutes after we ordered. waste of time. Didn't even offer us anything like a free drink or dessert as compensation for making us wait for nothing. On top of that, bad service. Both waitresses had deadpan, stony faces & made it seem like we owed them something. Did not leave with a satisfied stomach. Extremely disappointing. read more

Food is tasty, service not so hot! Came in with friends the first time and we order from the breakfast menu. There were 6 of us and the dinning room was more than 1/2 filled as we came. Ordered at once, all from the breakfast special menu. Drinks came on time and we ordered some dinner roll and those were delicious, soft and slightly sweet they were the crowd pleaser. About 15 minutes later, one omelette showed up. Our friend was trying to be polite and was waiting for all of our food to show up, after a few minutes that they are clearly not brining the rest of the spread we asked him to start dig in. My other friend's food showed up about 5 minutes after the first dish. Then waited for another 5 minutes the third and forth dish showed up. After that it was long wait. Not sure what kind of meltdown happened in the kitchen but my friend and I ordered the porridge and soy sauce noodle combo they never came. Other table seem to have the similar situation. We had to flagged down server to let them know we still are waiting for two dishes. When the dish finally came, they brought one set, so I let my friend have the dish. We gave ourselves plenty of time to enjoy breakfast (1.25 hr) now an hour has passed and I only had 15 max if my food is even going to show up. Finally, another 5 minutes, it arrived. By this time all my friends had finished their food except the one who got the last dish. It's not too fun trying to shuffle down hot porridge in 10 minutes time. I would have give the food a 4 star review but giving the service and how they handle the breakdown, my guess is this will be the last time I will want to dine here. read more

I had around 30 minutes before catching the train home so I decided to give this place a shot since it was pretty popular and fairly close to the station. I ordered an HK style milk tea with boba. The boba was an extra 20 cents and wasn't fully cooked, leaving me with a horrible stomachache afterwards. Definitely the worst milk tea I've ever had. For the whole ride home, I felt like throwing up. I wouldn't recommend this place and don't know why it is so popular. read more

One of my parents' go to take out places. My kids are starting to like HK cafe style food. Will come back more often in the future.

Monday night was our second time at this restaurant after the positive experience. We had the "baked pork chop over rice", "stirred-fried melon and pork with rice noodles", and the "curry Indian pizza". The pork was not as fresh now that we recall; taste was okay. However, my wife has been vomiting like crazy since early morning, and I've been vomiting and having diarrhea since 2 PM. The symptoms are still here as I am writing this review. We've decided that we would NEVER go back again and also thinking if we should report to the Health Department...We've never had a food poisoning episode as severe as this before. Out of the 3 meals on Monday my wife and I only had dinner at this place in common, since the symptoms are identical, that's where we draw our conclusion in the cause of our food poisoning episode. Do yourselves a favor and go somewhere else! read more

A tiny little place near the intersection of Millbrae Avenue and El Camino Real, where parking can sometimes be tight. But the chef here has a magical touch that brings out the perfect flavor in every dish. Their spaghetti with meat sauce is the best I've had at any Hong Kong café in the Bay Area. Their omelettes are also quite nicely done, comparable to the best I've had in upscale hotels (albeit in a different setting). Their breakfast ramen with sate beef comes very close in flavor to those found at breakfast joints in Hong Kong, and their sate beef rice noodle is delicious. They also do a good fried rice, with flavors on the mild side. read more

The food is ok but small portion , service is good but lack of parking space cuz the parking lots is small ! The restaurant inside also small , the largest table can only fits 6 ppl and also only 1 big table ! read more

I kinda had high expectations (usually can't go wrong with HK Cafes) after reading some reviews, but was prepared for the worst as well. The parking lot in the back is kinda small and weird because you have to walk all the way around the building to get to the entrance. The decor is very purple. It kind of rubs me the wrong way - this shade of purple is not too appropriate for a restaurant. The table cloths are the same shade of purple as the walls. Overload. The glass on the tables don't really fit which makes me fear for my life. Glass can be dangerous. Anyways onto the food! The prices are not low, but for what you pay, you expect good quality, right!? Not so, not so. I ordered a Baked Portuguese Sauce (sweet coconutty curry) Fish Fillet with Spaghetti. It took a while for it to come out, which is fine because I assumed it was freshly prepared, and it was piping hot. The hotness is probably why I am giving this place an overall rating of 3 stars. 2 big but thin pieces of fish fillets = decent. Total lack of ingredients. Usually I expect to see some bell peppers, some potatoes, onions, carrots... etc. I got 2 pieces of potato and 5 scraps of tomatoes. ARE YOU KIDDING ME!? Also the Portuguese sauce was bland. SERIOUSLY? I don't understand. I have never really had a tasteless Portuguese sauce in my life. Usually I complain of too much sauce. Not only was my spaghetti insufficiently wet, it was lacking in flavor and ingredients. Utter sadness. On the other hand, their beef stew is alright. Wontons = no good. They were falling apart (as in, the skin had come off of half of them). And the filling could be better. Do yourself a favor and go to the Bistro on Broadway instead, if you're looking for HK Cafe style food. read more

I come here one time every month. Hong Kong Style Cafe. Small room. The milk-tea sometime very good, sometime ...... worst. :( The price is very reasonable. But when the owner not in the shop, service very bed and they always OVER CHARGE, please check your bill before pay and keep in mind this is CASH ONLY!. Food not too bed, but not real like Hong Kong style. such as, the noodles soup had no taste. Also, I saw the waitress grab it out of a larger bag with her hands after handling cash or cleaning up the floor, and took over half a hour for the food to be served. Keep in mind this is CASH ONLY! I would not come back if I have choice! read more

this place is like a hole in the wall you can easily drive pass it and miss it. i think there used to be a Tapioca express here. but my friend took me here on our way to hillsdale. it was an easy exit from 101 and it is located exactly RIGHT at the corner or millbrae ave and el camino. i came in here thinking that the plates will be small but i was wrong.. my friend had ths chow mein and i had the noodle soup with spam.. it's hard to find a chinese place there their dishes are not greasy and i have to say this place is good. it's not greasy and their dishes are big.. i say for the type of food they serve( hk food) the prices are pretty reasonable. the service is good and the food came out pretty fast. their drink selections is not big but still good. i was about to came back here a second time and i had the ying yang drink (half coffee and half milk tea) and they asked me if i wanted condense milk in my drink.. which is good b/c very few places serve it the hk style with condense milk.. i ordered an egg and spam sandwich as well and i didn't know it came with fries.. which was pretty decent. it's cool that they have the hk gossip/news channel on along with hk gossip magazines so it makes you feel like it is a place for you to hang out. if only they served desserts! well if you want desserts broadway has a fewplaces for that.. overalll i am pretty content with this place. read more

Normal HK Cafe food. Nothing fancy. I believe it is cash only. I got the baked spaghetti and it was okay at best. It could use a bit more flavor but what should I expect. The milk tea is pretty good though! On the plus side, this place is pretty cheap! My parents seem to enjoy this place so I will probably be returning whether I like it or not. read more

It's your generic ABC place, HK cuisine. Thumbs up for the ox tongue. Thumbs down for the fish filet w/ sweet corn; it contains a lingering saltiness that will have you begging for water. OK at best. Got the Wonton noodle soup for takeout lunch. The price is very reasonable for $5.95 but the soup had no taste, noodles were soggy and the wontons were just OK. I also got a dinner roll and I saw the waitress grab it out of a larger bag with her hands after handling cash. Parking is also annoying at this place with only 2 legit spots in front of the restaurant. There is a sketchy lot in the back if you don't mind door dings. read more

I've known the owner for quite some time when he was working at another restaurant and when I heard he opened up shop in Millbrae, I rushed over to give his new place my business. My husband and me always drop by this place to eat whenever we craving for baked pork chop with fried rice/spaghettis just like Hong Kong style. It's not something sophisticated but the taste is so good it reminded him of growing up in Hong Kong and eating this all the time. Beside all the bake rice they also have special for the day and other tasty dishes. The price was very good and generous with big plate. The reason I couldn't be able to give a 5 STARS because of the waiting during dinner time. This place was small with limited seats and there's always long line so the best time to come is weekday before 6:00pm then you will be sail in smoothly. I will definitely recommend to people that love to eat Hong Kong style dishes. read more

This is an observation from my 8 year old son: He said he noticed that this restaurant changed every week and he wonder how long this one will last. I have to laugh because I don't think it will last either. We went there over the weekend for the 2nd time. Parking sucks. The place is small. The food is nothing to rave about. My son ordered ham and egg sandwich (toasted), when the sandwich came, the bread cannot look anymore white, you call that toasted? I ordered the curry fish ball rice noodle soup. The curry fish ball came separately on a plate, so my soup noodle has no curry taste, I had to combine them together. What's the point? The lady who sat next to us complained her beef ball was cold and hard. No thanks. I don't think this place will last............ read more
