It's been a while since I've been here. I've always enjoyed it in the past. The ambiance is beautiful during the cooler months with the plastic flaps opened up. Decided to stop by for a quick lunch and try their coolinary menu. Got the onion soup to start because can't visit without it. This was not on the coolinary menu. It was as good as I remembered. They brought out some bread and butter to dip with it great start. Coolinary did menu did the Vichyssoise and Veal Viennoise. One of the reasons I wanted to go was the Vichyssoise always wanted to try it. It's a great refreshing summer cold soup. Shouldn't have waited so long to try it. The Veal Viennoise was also good. Veal came out perfect. The pasta was interesting. Had the nice salty kick from the capers, cheesy, and had a hint of citrus maybe. That's what my taste buds thought anyway. Drink special was 6 bucks for a sazerac so had to order one. It was pretty decent. Wasn't mad at it for a 6 dollar sazerac. Overall good experience took a while to get the check even though they weren't super busy, but maybe they were short on a week lunch. Nothing to keep me from coming back. read more

Decided to go to a Coolinary lunch on a day off and our last trip there was a few years ago, so it was time to head back! Our reservation was for opening time and we were quickly seated once they opened the doors. I opted for a glass of sparkling wine they had as an add on for Coolinary, a French onion soup (not on the Coolinary menu but a favorite of ours), Vichyssoise, and veal viennoise. The French onion soup is perfect! The vichyssoise was chilled leek and potato soup and was very refreshing. The veal viennoise was not my favorite. The veal was cooked perfectly but there was something in the accompanying pasta that I couldn't pinpoint but it bothered me. Found this super quaint French bistro after doing some research online. While the food was really good, service was terrible. Our waitress continuously forgot to bring water, the restaurant ran out of cups so we had to use plastic cups, we were missing 2 sets of cutlery, and we had to continue to ask other waiters to stop by when our waitress dissapeared. Every table got bread & butter on the house, but not us. Not sure if it was an off night or what. Onto the food: the French onion soup was spectacular. Perfectly cheesy and not too salty. We loved it. We also shared the large charcuterie board which came with a hefty portion of meats & pates. Also shared the lamb chops dish which was cooked perfectly. Found this french-esque cafe while walking down the street. Its very artsy and feels like the restaurant was built amongst a tree house. For appetizer, ordered the shrimp and grits which was cooked in this delicious flavorful sauce with red peppers. A good portion for an appetizer for sure. Not a grits fan but they weren't nasty! I ordered the redfish which was served on a bed of asparagus and bok choy. Blackened redfish was done well, however, I would have preferred a different pairing of vegetables to complement the taste of the fish. Also ordered the cheese board + fruit which was assorted with 2 cheeses. It was a decent pairing, but lack of attention to detail as some of the fruit was not visibly as fresh. One of the most romantic restaurants in New Orleans. The indoor/outdoor seating is varied in its feel and vistas. It does feel like an eclectic Parisian restaurant. The cocktails are excellent, and the wine selection is quite good. Escargot are a favorite and come out sizzling in garlic butter with sliced house baguette. The cheese plate has of late been reduced to just a couple, albeit delicious, cheeses. The French onion soup is consistently excellent. The salads are usually on point, however at my last visit the leaves were somewhat wilted. As for the mains - the skilled chefs know to cook on point - making delicious lamb chops, steak and gulf fishes. The dessert menu is varied and is well accompanied by the coffees and after dinner drinks. Service is professional; sometimes hurried. Great food. Great service. From the specials menu I had " puppy drum" which is slang for a small redfish ( under 10 pounds). My fillet was fresh and perfectly cooked. As an avid fisherman I can attest that the fish was freshly caught. My wife has the Salad Nicoise and the yellowfin tuna was cooked perfectly. The service was exceptional and Chad our server knew every ingredient and how things were cooked. A great value. Wish they had this place in Connecticut!!! read more

What a fiasco. Hostess didn't show up at stand for a full eight minutes. When we told her we had a reservation, she acted as if she couldn't care less and said the "other tables are busy." Five more minutes passed and the staff couldn't care less. Then, another guy walked in and was immediately seated since he was friends with the staff. The hostess returned and told us it would be at least fifteen more minutes before we could be seated. "You can get a drink at the bar," she told us. Yes, the bar that literally has three occupied stools and ten more people crowded around. So, a reservation doesn't actually mean a reservation. It means "wait for hostess to show up for eight minutes, then be ignored for five minutes, then be told you won't be seated until half an hour after your reservation, while we give preferential treatment to our friends" Please avoid. If you are interested in French cuisine go to Crepe Nanou uptown. We had excellent service there. read more

Cafe Degas is one of my top 5 restaurants but I haven't been there in ages. During a recent visit, I was pleased to find out that it's still just as good. The cozy dining area is a lovely hideaway on Esplanade. Many restaurants are now charging for bread service so I appreciate the complimentary tasty warm bread and compound butter. I can't come here without ordering the escargot and it didn't disappoint. It arrived sizzling. I ordered the crabmeat and spinach omelette, subbing fries for the salad. The omelette was light and fluffy and filled with crabmeat. I thought I had enough room for dessert but the rich Chocolate Decadence dessert won and I had to take half of it home. My French glass of brut champagne and the 75 with Brandy were the perfect accompaniments to this meal. Cafe Degas remains a jewel in the NO restaurant scene. read more

Went here with a group of 7 and were seated right away which was great, our group was a little hung over due to the new year festivities but most of us were excited about the restaurant and our lunch. I was most excited about the French onion soup and it did not disappoint, see photo above. As a group we had a variety of things; mussels, raviolis, blood pudding, quail and shrimp. Apologies for no additional photos got a bit excited. Overall, the mussels, shrimp and raviolis were the bigger hits. Pro trip if you're planning to go to the track- eat at one of the yummy restaurants outside of the track before going in. You will find much better quality food and better value. That said we finally got around to trying Cafe Degas on a track day. It was a very cold day perfect weather for French Onion soup which was served quickly. It was delicious! Lots of stringy cheese and filled with croutons. We also split the Grillads and Grits - oh my! Next time I'm ordering my own, plenty of meat and the peppers made it full of flavor. I was really surprised at how small the place is, for the most part it's all outdoor dining but for winter they close off the patio and had heaters going it was quite comfortable. I can't wait to go back and try more dishes. read more

I love this little restaurant. It is nice and cozy. The food is also delicious but the wait staff needs to be trained. Before we had finished eating, the waitress plopped the bill on our table and said whenever you are ready. She also removed plates when a person at our table was still eating. That is a no-no. She never returned to ask if we needed water or anything else she was nice, but I think the problem is she has not been trained. Please train your wait staff to make the pleasant experience even more enjoyable. read more

Flash fried oysters: delicious. The service sucked. Our waiter didn't realize that he hadn't taken our order, insisted on a Charcuterie Board, we declined, he said he would cancel and out came the board (internal communication issue.) We had to tell him about 3 times that we were ready to order. The food delivery was irregular, some items delivered much later than other dishes. An "off" night for him? Was he new? This is a really interesting building surrounded by verdant trees which contains a French Bistro inside which, as its namesake indicates, is named after Edgar Degas, the noted French impressionist painter who spent time in New Orleans. This restaurant is located just a short distance from the Degas House that was the home of Edgar Degas while he was in New Orleans which now operates as a bed & breakfast and as an event venue. Cafe Degas offers traditional French bistro fare which they manage out of a surprisingly tiny kitchen. The ambiance here is quite nice and the location is in a beautiful area of Esplanade Avenue which contains several other interesting restaurants and businesses. I've had nice business meetings here and pleasant lunches and dinners here with friends. This is certainly a marvelous place for an enjoyable meal in a unique space. This is still one of my favorite restaurants in NO. I have had liver there for years. But they changed the supplier for liver and the result is poor. The liver is mealy and like a ground hamburger steak now. They were very gracious, redid the order, still bad, and did not charge for the dish. I will continue to go back, I like everything about the place, but this is a serious loss to the menu. read more

Message sent to the restaurant ; Your waiters are very quick. Our Thursday group always pays cash. The bill was $338. We each put in $51. Eight of us makes $408. The waiter was gone for two minutes and he said we only paid $328. We had counted the money 3 times before giving it to the waiter to make sure it was the right amount. When he came back with that story of underpayment, to avoid any problem we counted out $338 in front of him and also gave him a $50 tip. We like your restaurant and have been there many times. Next time we will pay with 8 separate credit cards and each of us will leave individual tips. Maybe the waiter discriminates against latins, which we are. read more

Arrived on a Sunday around noon and sat outside in the heat of summer because it was going to be a 40 minute wait for inside. Despite the heat and dripping sweat, I still enjoy the food so much. Hands-down, I will go back for the pate any day anytime. The portion was amazing so amazing. In fact that we had to order more bread like five times. It is enough to feed a family. I am still dreaming of it to this day. Otherwise, all the food was great, but still, the pate was my favorite. We ordered Cafe Degas cocktails that tasted like watered down coffee milk with no liquor in it. Server was extremely rude. Asked us to put in our drinks, appetizer, and entree in one go. Never really checked on us. Put a damper on our enjoyment. He hardly spoke to us and seemed to be rushing us out as soon as we sat down. Quality of his service was reflected in his tip though, so congrats I guess. read more

This place was highly recommended by a friend who used to live in New Orleans so I had to check it out. We were seated promptly at our table and our server took our orders for apps. We were a table of 4 and ordered: 2x Foie Gras 2x French Onion Soup Quail Salad Escargot One of the food runners accidentally brought us a third plate of foie gras so we told them we already had it. But I noticed that the piece on that new plate was more than twice the size that was served to me. I then compared the piece to my friend's plate and also noticed that it was double the size of mine. I usually hate making a fuss but I asked our server if she can get me a new one (foie gras is my favorite). She took both of our plates to the kitchen for comparison and came back and said "they said they won't replate it" Then my French Onion Soup came charred and burnt compared to the cheese my friend got. There was 0 pull with my cheese (the best part) and the broth was really salty. It felt like the chef had it out for me or something? Not quite sure why I got the short end of the stick on all my dishes. The rest of the apps were fine. The entrees: 2x Lamb chops Pork chop Steak - medium rare The lamb chop was cooked perfect. Its the only reason why I didn't give this place a one star. I tried the porkchop and it was also delicious. Perfectly tender. The sauce is a bit overwhelming but it was still good. My friend had the steak medium rare and it was bluer than most places I have ever seen, but the server said it wD "french medium rare" - it was fine by me but my friend thought it was just more rare than he was used to. Then came dessert. I LOVE creme brulee. And will get it everywhere that serves it. The one thing I cannot stand is a creme brulee that's unset. My creme brulee had a hard sugar topping but the custard was extremely runny and way too sweet. Overall, aside from the entree, I was pretty unhappy with my meal for how much we paid for the whole dinner. Mostly angry at my $20 foie gras that was half the size of everyone else's plate I saw and my extremely charred French Onion Soup. read more

Pretty disappointing experience after looking forward to visiting for some time and reading through some decent reviews. We figured we'd give their coolinary a try for our first time, which in hindsight may not have been the best idea. For starters, we had frog legs and the vichyssoise soup. Frog legs were actually delicious, but you only get 4 and they were quite small. Not sure it'd be worth the $17 price tag on the general menu. The soup was forgetful and tasteless (granted it's just chilled leek and potatoes), but not something I'd get again. For entrees we both ordered the veal viennoise. I was actually hoping to order the beef bordelaise as this dish is what was on the coolinary menu featured online, however it was not an option on the printed menu the evening we went. The veal was described as the following (per the online coolinary menu): "panned veal medallions, topped with onions, capers and chopped egg, served over fettuccini and cream sauce", yet the dish came very scarce of onions, capers and egg (pictured). The veal itself was flavored fine, fairly thin, but the crust was nice. The pasta and cream sauce was awful and something you could whip up better in your own kitchen. Somehow the noodles were not cooked cohesively, with some more al dente than others, and the cream sauce was skimp and lacking in flavor all around. On top of allll of this, service was painfully slow. We understand having worked in restaurants ourselves how busy one can get, but not visiting your table for 20+ minutes at a time is pushing it. It's unlikely we'll be rushing back for another visit. There are also plenty of other restaurants around Nola with much better coolinary experiences. read more

A group of about 10 of us had a reservation here and unfortunately we weren't seated until over an hour past our reservation...hence the 4 stars and not 5. They were apologetic bc the table before us was lingering for quite a while. The manager sent us a round of drinks and pomme frites while we waited. We ordered quickly when we sat down bc we were STARVING. I enjoyed the escargot and the steak with pomme frites. Steak was cooked well and had lots of flavor. The pistachio cake is such a great dessert. It's light so you don't feel super guilty about indulging. The reservation snaffu won't deter me from being a return customer. read more

Went for Coolinary this year and was really disappointed. The online coolinary menu was not available when we got to the restaurant. I heard the guest behind us ask about the menu options and their waitress spoke to a manager and made it happen. When I asked our waiter, he stated it couldn't be done and they knew the online menu was incorrect. So disappointing. My friend ordered the culinary menu and got the barbecue shrimp and risotto. See the picture for one shrimp one single shrimp. The pear dessert was so floury and not appetizing. We've been wanting to try this place for so long and unfortunately it did not meet the mark. The aesthetics did not match the pricing specifically the industrial floor fans hanging from the ceiling. Do better! read more

I'll keep it simple. What we got + pros and cons: Apps: Potato and leeks soup truly tasteless Frog legs 4 for $17, yikes, but they were good. Entrees: Fried Veal with fettuccini (probably our fault for getting this type of dish at a French restaurant) no flavor at all and tiny Dessert: pear and something tart (mediocre) Ambiance was great. Our waiter/waitress, although great personality, was slower than molasses in winter. Could it have been the kitchen's fault? Idk, I've worked in restaurants, it's possible. We ordered 3 appetizers and one large plate as a 2 top and we're not impressed w anything we got and left wanting more food and water. The apps were all boring and steak (while cooked great) was lack luster paired with the wine reduction sauce layered on top.On top we ordered a 70$ bottle that was never shown to us and was put into a decanter out of view, which tasted nothing like its description. Also my water was finished before our apps were done and never got a refill till I was done my entree. I would personally not recommend this place as a person that has worked in food service for over 10 years.
