A little hard to give this place a bad review as the food is decent. I've had better, but we've been coming here as a family for a long time and that all has come to a halt. Thanks in LARGE part to their rude as f* manager Max. I went on with my bf to eat breakfast 2 weeks ago. We had a plate that offers tamales, rice & beans. Except the tamales are fried. Not being too sure of the fried tamales, our wonderful waiter Julio offered to have me try the plate with one steamed and one fried. He has been our waiter almost every time we have been there and provides A+ service. ALWAYS!! Anyhow, went back again and asked to have the plate served the same way. All to have "Max" the manager come and tell me I had no idea what I was talking about and that would never have happened in his restaurant. First of all, I didn't know it was YOUR restaurant and second of all. Do not ever tell a customer they have no idea and even finish it with "sweetie" at the end. You think your condescending attitude is good PR you have no idea. Horrible management skills. I'm fact no people skills. You blatantly made me or tried to at best, make me feel like I was an imbecile, didn't work sweetie! Then bringing over pan dulce to try to make amends after I told you I was going to talk to the owner about this. You are anything but someone I would ever want working as management, Max! Your company should give your job to someone who is qualified. And.. more than anything. Learn from this! You do not know who you have waking through the doors. I could have been someone very important. And still may be. You have no idea. Treating everyone who walks through those doors with respect is something you need to learn Max.. aka sweetie. The kind of food that makes you want to come back for more. I prefer coming during their more "dead" hours because it can get extremely packed during breakfast/ brunch time. Ahhh the ambiance was amazing. A modern diner. The chilaquiles however was just okay. The green sauce was tasty but something was off with the red. Overall the San ignacio was surprisingly the tastiest! Their chicharron spread on the corn patties with melted cheese was delicious. Cafe de olla was on the sweet side for me but still good. I love old time Monrovia so I was so hyped to find a new brunch spot! I love the Mexican culture they infused in this place, from the bakery to the menu items. In December, they had a churro waffle and it was divine. I've already been twice and I'm from south OC! The servers are so sweet and lovely. The place is huge but beware of the line around 10am onwards. Last time I got the chilaquiles divorciados and I loved it because I like getting the best of both worlds. I'm not sure why this restaurant is called Café de Olla because the café de olla there doesn't taste like it at all. I visited today and ordered an iced café latte, an iced café de olla, and a milkshake. It took about 25 minutes to receive our drinks. When I got the iced café de olla, it tasted watered down with no coffee flavor. NONE! I didn't even finish it and went to the coffee shop right next to it. That coffee was a lot better. I was so disappointed after spending about $30 and waiting such a long time. I only received an apology for the delay. Given the wait and the quality of the drink, it would have been nice to be offered a small gesture, like a pastry, for the inconvenience. read more

Food was good but service was slowwww. We came during the peak hours on a weekend so we expected to wait. The front staff said 30-45 min, which ultimately turned out to be 60 min. By the time we sat down, we told the server we were ready to order because we had been waiting for a while. He didn't come back for our order, and another server had to tell him, "hey, that table is ready to order." Food was served to our table at different times, which was fine but our last entree didn't come for 20-25 min. My poor friend was hungry and patiently waiting. We were served by a male who seemed to have been very distracted or just not doing well that morning. There were 4 of us & he forgot to take some of our orders yet brought everyone the same coffee. The service here is phenomenal, let me start with that. The food definitely reminds you of grandmas cooking. I came on a Saturday night and there was no wait which was great. I initially came for the coffee, which has now made me a fan of cafe de olla and would return alone for a nice cup of coffee again. Only complaint would be the dishes don't seem to be washed throughly. When my coffee came, there was red lipstick (like the bottom lip imprint) on the rim. Thinking it was mine I began to wipe it away but then realized I didn't wear lipstick nor had I even sipped it yet. Then our main dish came out and my bowl and plate felt greasy with food stains still on it. Many of the dishes also had chips or cracks in the serve ware. So I would return for the coffee and happy service, but unfortunately not the food. read more

I always ask a million questions, because I cant seem to decide what I wan to eat. Everyone was very patient and answered all my questions. Stopped by today for an earlier breakfast with my dad. We sat outside as I had my dog, surprisingly we were the only ones outside. Our server came quickly to take our drink order, and then our food order. After our food was brought, he came back out once and then we were completely forgotten. I had to go back inside to ask for additional item needed for my meal and then again for my check. Not the service I'm used to from this establishment!! This time we opted for their beef birria bowl, a big portion. The only thing that threw me off was the amount of limes brought to complement the size of the soup. To be exact 3 like edges. I had to go inside to ask for more limes, the server came out and confirmed what I wanted, and a few minutes later I received a few more. To my surprise, I was charged extra for the limes. Seemed odd as the original amount given didn't complement the size. I asked the server about the extra charge, and his response was anything additional is an extra cost. When I said the original portion wasn't enough, he just shrugged and repeated the same statement. As you order your food, and ask for additional items be ready for the additional cost. I took my brother here for the first time for breakfast. We enjoyed it very much. I got the CHILAQUILES DIVORCIADOS Add Carne Asada and it was delicious. Total was $26.45. It was nice having two different chilaquiles. I got the Azteca which was a red sauce and Suizos which is with a creamy tomato sauce. I enjoyed the suizos more because it had more flavor. I also got scrambled eggs and added carne asada to it as well. Thank you to our server Yaqueline for the recommendation. My brother got the MOLE ENCHILADAS Sub Puerco Beans. Total was $24.20. He said he enjoyed the mole sauce but he preferred my suizos chilaquiles instead. He also got the iced cafe de olla. Not to sweet which he enjoyed. The only down fault is that the tap water though isn't the greatest tasting. We were so full from sharing our plates we wished we saved room for the pan cart! There was an assorted amount of breads to choose from. They also had a dessert cart rolling around too. Everything looked so good! Other guests were enjoying a pan basket. Bathrooms were clean. The area we sat at was clean as well. No debris on the floors. Tables weren't sticky as well. We stopped in on a Saturday morning to get some pastries and, while the brunch wait was long, we were in and out with our goodies in less than 10 minutes. Just go up to the counter on the right when you enter the restaurant to select and pay for pastries. We were even lucky enough to get the concha's fresh from the oven! My favorite was the Nutella taco, but everything was good. This place gets packed quickly, so be sure to show up early and be ready to wait. While the wait is definitely worth it (at least for the Mexican breakfasts), there are other breakfast places nearby if you get too hungry in line. read more

Been here so many times. Love the weekend breakfast but be prepared to wait. It's ok inside I don't always feel like the tables are wiped and as clean as could be. The service for us has been hit or miss. Sometimes you sit for long periods so don't go if you are in a rush or only have an hour. Because you never know. We waited outside for an additional 30 minutes before we were seated outside since I brought my dog. I ordered the Berry Banana French Toast and an English Breakfast Hot Tea. The food was decent however, I spotted a short curly hair in my French toast. Since I was full already, I did not mention this to my waiter. The service was good but I don't think it is worth the wait. I liked that they were dog-friendly and the prices were reasonable. We ordered the Chilaquilles divorciados and I loved that they had many options of salsas for the Chilaquilles that varied in flavor and how spicy they would be. The mole was a lil bit bitter for my liking but the green sauce was spicy and delicious. I ordered a cafe de la Olla and it was yummy! Great blend of coffee, cinnamon and piloncillo. The sweet bread was soft and fresh and delicious. I loved how they bring a cart over for you to choose your pan dulce at your table. This is somewhere in the top 5 cakes I've eaten. The Matilda's cake is moist, the right proportion of cake to frosting, and really chocolately but not too sweet. makes your lips n tongue turn black but whatever haha. it's also my partners favorite so we ordered a full cake (~$40) for his birthday and it was well liked by the party guests. was very easy to place an order ahead of time online and pick up was quick and easy as well. Julio Ceasar was our server and very attentive and a pretty busy day there . I had the Bacon & Eggs with Hash-browns and French Toast . Everything was delicious. i have been to the Cafe de Olla in Burbank several times, and was in the Monrovia neighborhood, so dropped by this place. This place is twice or three times bigger than the one in Burbank. Same food choices and same great service. Plenty of parking by the street and some parking lots nearby. I order the Chorizo Omelette as usual which is my favorite at this shop. read more
