Had my birthday breakfast at Cafe Amsterdam yesterday. The food was fabulous. Our coffee and tea was high quality and the tea was obtained from Indigo. They are a nice local tea shop in the same mall. The woman owner is part of the charm. She is a bit like the old owner of the White Spot cafe on 4th Avenue in Anchorage. Brisk, commanding and very serious about the "rules". Enjoy the experience. She is simply doing her best to stay open and deal with the awful Covid situation. Excellent customer service but overpriced and underwhelming food. The curry chicken sandwich tastes like a simple chicken salad sandwich, theres no real flavor there. The staff earned a five-star for friendliness and attention, with smiling faces and continuously filling my coffee - but - everything else SUCKED! With only two other tables seated, I was told to wait - waited for ten minutes to be seated. Ordered the mushroom Swiss omelette and it took FOREVER to arrive, it might have been the next day, and it was tasteless and poorly prepared. The table behind me sat empty with dirty dishes for my entire visit even though they had very few customers and plenty of staff. A friend and I attempted to dine here for lunch. Before the front door was even closed, a waitress started yelling at us (literally, screaming) about their covid policy. Dear owners: I don't care what your policy is (which at the time was completely different than that of every other restaurant in Anchorage). This is not a way to treat other people. read more

This was our first time at this restaurant, and as soon as we walked in the lady was not friendly or welcoming at all! We were the only younger people in there, we had a 6yo, and we are all in our late 20's. Everyone else was 65+. She acted like she didn't even want our business. So she gave us a lecture on the COVID rules, told us we needed to keep our masks on while sitting at our table. Weird, but alright, we agreed. We sit down, and one of the people at our table mistakenly pulled his mask down to look at the menu. (Like we usually do at all of the restaurants we go to these days) The VERY FIRST thing this lady said to us is "Look if this is gonna be an issue already, y'all can leave. There's the exit." It was an honest mistake, and could've easily been corrected, but she was so ugly & rude, and embarrassed us in front of the entire restaurant. We always follow the mask rules everywhere, even my 6 year old. So we are not "those people" looking to be difficult. Like I said, it was a mistake. We all typically take our masks off once we sit down at the table, I've never heard of having to keep it on while sitting at the table....but her attitude was horrible & ugly from the very beginning! This rating is solely based on the greeter and their COVID policy. The greeter told us that holding the door open for our whole party was polite, but interfered with the COVID signage for the incredible influx of patrons THAT WEREN'T THERE! There was no one behind us to read these ridiculous restrictions. Once inside she says we have to put our masks on between bites and sips...not kidding. If they're trying to not have any business (we were the only people in the place, and it was lunch time), they are succeeding. Expensive food for the quality. $22 for a thin over-toasted bagel with lox. For that price I was expecting a fresh bakery bagel but it was definitely just the cheapest you can get at the grocery store, toasted brown. The lox were pretty good though, looked fresh, and the small amount of fruit on the side was actually pretty flavorful for anchorage produce. Definitely some overkill Covid/mask signage everywhere. As a very Covid conscious person who also deals with the public at their worst, I get that. But then reading others reviews of the way they were treated between bites of their meal makes me glad I chose takeout instead of dine in. Couldn't agree more with the negative reviews regarding the woman at the door/owner. She was rude and hostile towards myself and other customers who were more than willing to comply with the mask rules. I respect the choice to enforce the mask mandate but the way this business goes about enforcing it is extremely off-putting. Rudest staff I've ever experienced. I will never return and will be actively recommending people away from it. They have masks at the door which is fine and had the other door propped open but when I was standing in the doorway attempting to put the provided mask on the hostess told me the door would be open when I had a mask on and shut it in my face. Came in twice since the last review because a couple of things happened that made me pause. I used to come almost every weekend before this. One, the owner ripped up a receipt and showered my sister and her friend with it when said friend's entrée was sent back because it was cold. Food wasn't any warmer the second time so she didn't want it. I don't think this is what they meant by "make it rain." Two, I heard it was under new ownership and didn't think the croissant beatrix would be that good. Well, I was wrong, same ownership, but like last time the breakfast was cold and didn't taste that good. I was hoping it would have been better since there was only me and one other person there eating breakfast on a Friday morning, but unfortunately it wasn't and the owner was now extremely rude to me. I asked her if she was the owner, as she was my server and delivered a menu, because I thought this was under new ownership (my sister described the rainmaker and I recognized her). She was very condescending and asked what that had to do with ordering breakfast and ignored my question, but I was now flustered since dude at the next table and I had already discussed this topic. She actually leaned in, cold dead eyes boring into mine, and asked what I wanted for breakfast. I really should have walked out right then, but if I did the review would be that much shorter. Alas, I stuck it out and paid $20 for tepid coffee and cold croissant Beatrix with al dente/cold breakfast potatoes. I didn't send it back since chick was way too out there and I was afraid for my life. This place sucks and Medusa is making it circle the drain that much faster. Will not return. read more

I used to frequent Cafe Amsterdam years ago and now I remember why I don't come here. We were told as we arrived that food would be around 20-25 minutes. You could tell the servers were busy as most tables had recently been seated. We accepted our fate and sat down anyway. Twenty minutes came and went, then thirty then 45....it took an hour to get our food and she wrote down my order wrong. Not only that she had forgotten to put our order in. We watched as people who got there 30 minutes after us, ate their brunches. The breakfast potatoes were burnt and soggy...weird. How does that even happen. The best part of my breakfast? The English muffin toast. The meal was purchased for us. I do appreciate that gesture and the willingness to replace the wrong eggs. But, a manager didn't even stop by to check in with us. Which with a wait that long you'd think they would. There's really nothing special about this place anymore. I won't return. There's too many other excellent options. read more

I have only been for the breakfast. The Croissant Beatrix: Two poached eggs on split warmed croissant with avocado, tomato, topped with hollandaise sauce and sour cream. Served with cottage potatoes IS THE BEST THING YOU WILL EAT! I love that think I have been over 10 times and think I have only ever had one other item. Couldn't give a recent review of the food here. They use to have some unique items on the menu that were delicious, however the bartender promptly told me that I was not going to have a good experience here and that I should leave when I inquired as to where I was to wait in line to be seated. I am still a little shocked. That's the kind of service I would expect at a seedy bar not a cafe. I was told at the alternate eatery I went to that the bartender that told me to leave the Cafe was actually the owner and that there have been several people that have vocalized the ongoing poor behavior of this business. This was our first time eating here and it was delicious! So many great sounding dishes it was hard to choose, I went with the avocado melt and he had the classic eggs Benedict. Visited from WA state during Valentine's weekend. Our flight landed mid-morning and we were desperate to find some comfort brunch/breakfast to eat. This place was the only one open at that time. We ordered a latte and a hot cocoa. Both came barely warm. Waited some extra 15-20 minutes for the food to arrive. It was also barely warm and bland. $15-18 dollars for 2 slices of supermarket bread and some eggs that were undone? (We both ordered sunny side up... this doesn't mean that the egg's white should be raw and runny). I'm sum, it was a disappointing first meal during our first visit to Alaska. read more

The most impressive beer list in Anchorage. No doubt about it. I even got a rare treat to drink my favorite -- and largely unknown-- German beer, Reissdorf Koelsch. The food is wonderful. I've had both the German sausage plate, and the Reuben sandwich. The Reuben was one of the best I've ever had. If it wasn't such a calorie-monster I would have eaten two! Remember the tall skinny bus boy, he was just so awesome, always there to fill up my cup of coffee or water, they're never empty, haven't been to a restaurant with such good refill service, it's always me looking at my empty glass wanting more H2O!! This establishment was disappointing with their food and an older woman who worked in the bar was very rude even before she seated us. My family and I visited for lunch, and all had soup and sandwiches. The broccoli cheddar soup was flavorless and watered down. And my chicken salad sandwich wasn't bad, but it wasn't great. The others had similar meals and said the same reviews on the food. HOWEVER, the gray short-haired woman working behind the main bar counter was RUDE AND COULD NOT CARE LESS how long we waited. She said several snarky comments before we were even seated. There were several tables open and she did not seat us for 15 minutes until she was "good and ready!" And when I had mentioned we were trying to see if my sister had shown up yet, she said in a baby-doll voice "ok, see if your sister is here. I will be behind this counter when your scan is over." We wanted to give her the benefit of the doubt to see if she was just having a bad day, but she treated all in-coming customers like that. PLEASE AVOID THIS PLACE. Went in yesterday to have breakfast and take us to go to my husband in the hotel room. I've eaten here many times, but yesterday was horrible. The woman basically yelled at me that I had to keep my mascon at all times unless I was sipping a drink. She says my rules you follow, I tell you what to do.
