I came with a group of four people total. I suppose it was a busy day, it was veterans day. I guess they only had one cook working and one waitress. The waitress was flustered with how busy it was. After waiting for 30-40 minutes we recieved our order. I ordered the mighty mikes burger and the burger patty was not seasoned and the fries unsalted. I heard so many great things of this place but I was very unimpressed. Better to go to Harleys Old Thyme Cafe. read more

This place was open at 5:30 am. We were so happy. As we walked in we were treated but sweet older woman, she offered us coffee even before we reached our table. This lady has such a lovely energy we didn't want to leave haha. The food was delicious and good coffee.They have espresso as well. I've been trying to get out of my comfort zone lately, and go to more places I've never visited before. Barbie's is one of those. It's the odd purple building on Lake Otis Pkwy (a road I rarely drive on). They have classic diner fare. Close to what you might find at places like Granny B's. The ambiance is also classic divey-diner, nothing fancy, just how I like 'em. Coffee is typical diner coffee, it's A-OK. I got the "Dice & Scramble". The portions were massive and the quality was high, I was impressed! The service though, was very lacking. My meal didn't come with toast. The server asked me if I ordered toast, I said she didn't ask me, and asked for rye toast. My coffee and my water were empty for about 20 minutes, and then she brought me the tab. Let me tell you, eating salted potatoes with no fluids is ROUGH. I asked if the toast was read and she said "I was wondering who's rye toast has been sitting up there so long!" No apology, no nothing. I still had to request that my drinks were refilled. Ugh. read more

This is a late review, but they say, "better late than never". I went about 2 weeks ago at lunch time. They serve breakfast all day so, naturally, I ordered breakfast. I had some scrumptious eggs, hash browns, and bacon, but the two things that really stuck out to me were: 1. The pancakes are superb! I would gladly eat pancakes there for breakfast, lunch, and dinner 2. Though the waitress was hunched over, and looked to be having a hard time, she was very pleasant and attentive. Little diner with wide range of food options. I'm not a breakfast person, so I really appreciate being able to get a Reuben or French dip instead of eggs and hash brown type of meal in the early morning. Seat yourself and sometimes have to wait for service if they're busy (which they almost always are). A lot of locals here. Families and groups or pairs of older folks chatting over coffee are common here. I like the traditional diner feel. Servers are mature women, friendly and hard working. They still use paper/handwritten tickets. Staff is consistent (same servers for the past year we've been going here). Service isn't fast, but the food and attitude are both good. It's not somewhere I'd go if I were in a hurry, but I dislike rushing if I'm out to eat anyway, so for me, it's not a dealbreaker. They make some of their sauces in house. Their barbecue sauce is excellent. They have Stella on tap and espresso drinks available as well. We always trade out fries for their tots (good choice). They usually have 2-3 homemade soups daily. The ones I've tried were all delicious. I don't like their burgers for some reason, but the chicken sandwich options on the menu are tasty. I've never had to send anything back or been terribly disappointed in a selection (not impressed with burgers but wasn't devastating either) They're open early morning through mid afternoon. I ordered an omelette; not bad. Pancakes, not so good. The taste was off. The coffee was absolutely terrible, couldn't drink it. The server didn't even asked what was wrong with it or offered to change it. If you are in a hurry... don't stop here. It took me more than an hour to get my meal and the place was half empty. Also, the place doesn't have very good ventilation -I guess-, so be prepared to leave smelling like you were inside the kitchen frying your meal in old oil. read more

My fiancé and I went in for brunch today. I'd been wanting to stop in for AGES but we lived on the other side of town (until recently). It IS a little run-down, but the atmosphere is homey and nice. Our waitress was really nice, attentive, and pretty much ran the whole floor herself. I absolutely love that they are VA friendly. The food was also good and, again, homey. Large portions, but not overwhelming. I was surprised to see their hours are 5 am - 3 pm but they are a cafe and, hey, there aren't many mom and pops that serve breakfast all day! Ordered a Bacon Cheeseburger. Food was great! The fries are the bomb & fresh. Perfectly crispy with perfect amount of salt. The burger was well cooked. I was more impressed by the fries and how fast the service was. The decor is nothing fancy at all and the wait staff was uhm ok. Our waitress was busy, inattentive & short. We've eaten there many times, and the food is good, but we just stopped in to order food to go, as we want to help them to stay open during covid. After ordering our food, the cook popped out to say hello, which was very nice, but he was not wearing a mask. My wife is immunocompromised, and we can't take a risk like that. Their website says that they are going beyond what is mandated to ensure the health of patrons and employees. That is not true. People were seated closer than 5 feet from each other, and at least one waitress was also not wearing a mask. If you are concerned about covid, you will want to take a look before dining there. read more

I feel like I'm in an episode of Cheers when I come here. The waitresses seem to remember me when I stop in, even though I don't have a "usual" it's a nice feeling. I like that it's just down the road from me, so when I roll out of bed I can roll on over here and beat the crowd. During the summer there are tables and chairs to sit outside and view the lovely traffic pass on by. All of the servers have been pretty great, and the food hot and tasty. The breakfast is tasty with large portions, and for lunch all the standard fare such as burgers and sandwiches. Also, the sides that come with the burgers are good. Fries are standard good and crisp, and the potato salad fresh and well put together. Will recommend. read more

The cooks here will drop your food on the floor and try to feed it to you. My mother used to be a server here. I came in to see her on Mother's Day. She was working. A few minutes after arriving we heard a big commotion in the back and people shouting . My mom came up to my table in tears, when I asked her what happened, she informed me that the cook was the owners son and that he had dropped food on the floor and when she stopped him for trying to serve it to a patron he screamed at her so belligerently the entire restaurant could hear it. She was absolutely humiliated. This story was then backed up by the owner who then came up to the table to speak with my mother within earshot of me and tell her that she is never to speak to the cook like that, and that it's the cooks business what he decides to do with the food. My mother left, she quit that day. But everyone should know that this restaurant will serve you food off the floor. read more

My husband and I have been in a few times, and the food is always good. Nothing fancy, just a hearty old fashioned breakfast. I love eggs Benedict, the perfectly poached egg is key, they nail it every time. The decor could use an update, but it's homey. I would love to give this place a full 5 stars but their service, as sweet and nice as they all are is always pretty slow and sometimes spacy. We've learned its best to order everything at once, drinks, food and any sides ( extra bbq for example). We will keep going, nothing wrong with a leisurely breakfast. read more

Pretty good place all around with a home cooked meal feeling to everything I've ever had on the menu. Presentation on the plate is basic, as in they put the food what you ordered on the plate and don't try anything fancy. Things actually look and taste like they just made it in the back and not just thawed it out or put it in the microwave like at Denny's or Village Inn. That said, the food is inconsistent just like you made it at home.. you have some hits and misses but it is all good and you eat it with a smile. Prices are just OK. Nice waitresses, decent location. Barbie's has been around for a few years now and I've noticed that they're consistent in their food quality and speed of service.
