My husband and I are long time fans of the food at Barbie's Cafe. However, the service is not great. We have been here twice over the past 2 weeks, and each time we have waited over 15 minutes before even being greeted by the server, and have spent well over an hour in the restaurant just for breakfast. Both times they were not exceptionally busy. The servers are not overly friendly, they avoid eye contact, and they do not have good communication on who has what tables. Both times we watched people who came in after us get greeted and order food before us. As of right now. I have had my credit card sitting on the table for 15 minutes, and have still not received my check. We have now been here for an hour and 15 minutes, and my husband had to leave to go back to work. It is extremely frustrating to see a restaurant that we like so much continue to lack in customer service, and from now on, we will go elsewhere. read more

If you want a stellar breakfast but don't mind rude and unfriendly waitresses this is your place! Seriously. Don't sigh because I asked for my check. In a half full restaurant 45 minutes for breakfast is not ok. read more

Im actually a fan of Dinty Moore, so my Dinty Moore corned beef hash wasn't too bad. But it was way too expensive for Dinty Moore. Coffee was nutty tasting. Just blah. I won't go back. (I'm kidding about actually liking Dinty Moore) read more

came here on tuesday around 9 am and it was completely empty... understandable. By the time I left, 2 other parties had walked in. I ordered the denver omelette with hash browns, extra crispy, and a small orange juice ($14). Prices seem reasonable for anchorage... The hash browns were perfectly cooked and the ham and veggies in the omelette were cut small and cooked perfectly. Everything was good overall, but not super WOW. I probably wouldn't come back because there are much better breakfast spots in anchorage. Also the place was a bit dirty... my table was sticky and there was a dead bug on the window sil. The staff should have spent more time cleaning (and the devil is in the details) since it was so empty... Also, the waitress farted!! HAHAHA!! She was cleaning or something towards the front... tooted... then about 5 sec later said "excuse me"... LOL, at least she owned up to it. The 3 start rating is baed mostly on the food and service. Best place for breakfast in Anchorage. Barbie is so friendly and knows practically every customer. Great comfort food, attentive servers, flowing coffee, awesome oatmeal and omelets. My wife and I live near Barbie's Café and have been driving by this place for years. We finally decided to try it and we have found our new spot! The food is great, the service is friendly and most important, the food comes out pretty quick, it's filling and reasonable priced. This is my favorite brunch place. Barbie is great and the staff their are great and the food is fabulous, everyone needs to try their Arnold Palmer there i suggest you go there asap! Barbie is the owner and I LOVE her too death! She's really friendly and nice and just look for a smiling face and you'll find her :) cornbread is good too! It's the best cornbread in town in my opinion! Lol I always get the ceaser salad when I go there with the Arnold Palmer what's salad without an Arnold Palmer? You can even add things to your salad like bacon, chicken etc. Theirs even ice cream their for little kids! It's vanilla! I haven't tried any yet but I'm sure it's delicious! read more

A small group had breakfast here Saturday morning. Even though the parking lot was at capacity we found many tables and lots of seating available for us. I would advise not letting the parking lot deter you- it must be overflow from the service station/c-store next door. Our table had an assortment of standard breakfast items including eggs benedict, a vegetable sausage 3 egg scramble and eggs up--I ordered crispy hash browns and they arrived crispy but the inside was soggy, the others had the home fries which I sampled and will never order hash browns again--they were delectable. The hollandaise sauce was excellent but the muffins were a bit over toasted which detracted from the dish making them a tad tough to cut. Overall the service was quick and the coffee cups were always full. Pricing seems to run on the higher side for a mom and pop breakfast but not exorbitant. I will try it again--this time with home fries and eggs benedict and un-toasted english muffins.. read more

In a nutshell, food was good (3-4 stars), but the service was poor and borderline rude (1-1.5 stars). If you want more details, please read on. I pass by Barbie's Café almost on a daily basis. I like to go out to breakfast on the weekend and I like to support local restaurants so today I stopped in at Barbie's to give it a try. It was early and the restaurant was maybe 1/4 full. The waitress seated me quickly, told me the specials and handed me a menu. She asked me if I knew what I wanted and I said that I needed a minute. She almost seemed put off that I requested a minute to review a menu I had never seen before. I ordered the kitchen sink omelette with home fries along with coffee. The food took quite a while to come out, but maybe they were short-staffed in the kitchen. My omelette and home fries were good - not the best I ever had, but tasty enough. FYI - The coffee is nothing special - Folgers, Hills Bros or Yuban, but I'm alright with that. I only mention the coffee, because some people are very particular about their morning java. The problem I had was with the waitress. She became less friendly and even less professional the longer I was there. When she came around to warm up my coffee a couple times, I said 'thank you' each time, but she said nothing. Her lack of response didn't irritate me, but I thought it wasn't very professional. She never asked the standard "how is everything?" Again, not the end of the world, but not the sign of an excellent waitress, either. I finished my meal and waited for the check. The café was starting to fill up. I figured my check would arrive lickety-split so they could free up my table for incoming customers. This was not the case. After several minutes I finally asked another waitress for my check. After several more minutes, my check arrived. She dropped it off without saying a word and quickly moved on before I could even hand her money. So I waited another several minutes for my waitress to return and cash me out. When she arrived she didn't say anything about the wait or ask how my meal was. I know I didn't make her happy when I asked for change, but I wasn't about to leave a 35% tip for the poor service. I left her a 15% tip, which was more than she deserved, but I always leave a tip. I think it's just good practice. In fact, I almost always tip 20%+, since I know wait staff usually work for minimum wage + tips. Anchorage has too many good breakfast places for me to take another chance on Barbie's. When I walked in I asked for a table for 4 and the others will come. the waitress said "oh you can just wait for them and then get a table" and walked away that irked me at first. so I waited for my group and we ended up getting out own table. 15 minutes later someone came by and gave us water my cut had specks of food floating in it and I asked for another I never received it. I asked for over easy eggs received scrambled and even then the inside was runny and undercooked. After wards we were waiting to pay I even walked up to the counter and told them I'd like to pay for the food they said they'd be there soon 20 minutes later and still nothing so I just left exact change there because we didn't even have a waitress to tip she was too busy chatting in the back to even give me a new water without food in it I'll never go back there again and the food wasn't even good read more

The eggs were cooked perfect, and the home fries were amazing, reminded me of when mom would cook breakfast. I couldn't eat the whole plate, eggs, bacon, potatoes, and toast, very filling! Staff was very friendly, nice quiet place to enjoy your breakfast. I will be back. read more
