    The dining room

This place was open at 5:30 am. We were so happy. As we walked in we were treated but sweet older woman, she offered us coffee even before we reached our table. This lady has such a lovely energy we didn't want to leave haha. The food was delicious and good coffee. They have espresso as well. The kitchen looks clean and overall friendly sweet kind environment. Thank you for such a lovely experience so early in the morning

I've been trying to get out of my comfort zone lately, and go to more places I've never visited before. Barbie's is one of those. It's the odd purple building on Lake Otis Pkwy (a road I rarely drive on). They have classic diner fare. Close to what you might find at places like Granny B's. The ambiance is also classic divey-diner, nothing fancy, just how I like 'em. Coffee is typical diner coffee, it's A-OK. I got the "Dice & Scramble". The portions were massive and the quality was high, I was impressed! The service though, was very lacking. My meal didn't come with toast. The server asked me if I ordered toast, I said she didn't ask me, and asked for rye toast. My coffee and my water were empty for about 20 minutes, and then she brought me the tab. Let me tell you, eating salted potatoes with no fluids is ROUGH. I asked if the toast was read and she said "I was wondering who's rye toast has been sitting up there so long!" No apology, no nothing. I still had to request that my drinks were refilled. Ugh.

I was right, as I walked in they sold the very last thing of what I wanted. But gosh am I glad- it forced me to try something new. I didnt take a picture because it was so cold out and my hands were frozen, but it was a beautiful, elongated bakery treat. It had lovely purple Ube cream and touch of oreo crumbs on top, the base was essential much like a flat cruller, but if higher quality. It was sensational! I bought my husband something that looked lower carb that had coffee cream that also enjoyed. I got my husband custom cold jasmine sugar free tea, and I got a frosty honeydew melon drink. It was a little spendy, but its nice to have a treat one on a while.

It's like a croissant baked in a waffle form, but a bit denser than a regular croissant. What really made it special was the Ube cream -- a light, buttery frosting that wasn't too sweet. Easily a 10/10 for me. I also ordered the Ube Cruffin, which had that same croissant-like texture in a muffin shape. The inside had a light cream filling, and the top was covered with the same Ube cream. It was good, but not quite as amazing as the Croffle -- 7/10. The Ham Banh Mi was tasty and filling (6/10), and the Boba Milk Tea was decent too (6/10). Oh and I got to taste their smoked salmon chowder that my friend ordered. Very good flavor, body, and richness (8/10). Everything I had was good but nothing that was as memorable as the Ube Croffle, but it wasn't cheap -- I spent a total $32 for a sandwich, drink and 2 pastries. Then again, prices in Alaska tend to be higher in general. Overall, even though I've only been once, I'd definitely come back for that Ube Croffle -- it was the real highlight!

Some stuff for sale too like jewelry. I came on a Friday afternoon at 1pm and there was nobody inside. They have four or five tables plus two couches. Would be good for groups or a date. I almost passed out when I had to pay 5.75 for a 12oz mocha. Their rent must be extremely high here. None of their menus on the counter or the wall had any prices, well they did but they blacked them out. None of the specials had prices, the food too. So they can change them how they see fit. I just don't really like that business practice, I think it's kind of shady. They are way too high as well. Nobody should be paying that for espresso. Mocha did taste decent though, and not too hot which I appreciate I didn't burn my mouth. The worker was very quiet and when I left she sat on the couch with her phone. Happy to support small businesses but I won't go out of my way to come here or ever pay that much for a mocha. Those are *bucks prices.

We ordered several meals between 2 adults and 3 kids in addition to an appetizer and drink. They're are listed in order of favorite to least favorite: Calamari Seafood pasta Fish and chips Kids fried chicken and rice Scallop Risotto House margarita Kids dessert (house made sorbet) The server asked what soup or salad we would like within the meal, and little did we know, it would be an additional $7 up charge for each. In addition, the margarita was all ice, and tasted like your typical Jose Cuervo margarita. The calamari was good and fairly thick, enjoyed by everyone. The seafood pasta had a good flavor and loaded with seafood, truly the one meal I enjoyed. The fish and chips had 3 large portions of halibut, with a heavy fried batter, and average fries. It didn't taste better than your average fish and chips, and I'm glad I didn't personally order this dish. The kids chicken and rice had a surprisingly large amount of chicken with bland rice. The scallop risotto, just simply wasn't very good, it wasn't bland, but the flavor was lacking, and of the 3 that tried it, no one ate much. The kids dessert was called house made sorbet, and my kiddos were so excited to eat it. They tried one bite and almost cried, he said it tasted like broccoli, and I laughed and tried it myself...no kidding, this tasted like broccoli!! It was absolutely awful, like one of those gag jelly beans. I was expecting a high bill, but the hidden charges at the end really added to our disappointment. I regret coming here
