The first stop I make every time I visit home is Kavas! I order my favorite, the breakfast fried rice. It has rice, spam, egg, green onion all mixed together. It is such a delicious combo! I order mine with an over easy egg and add sausage links. Every year the taste stays the same which is DELICIOUS! The portion size is decent. You can have a side of pancakes or toast. I picked my husband up from the hospital, he hadn't eaten for 4days and really wanted crepes... I searched up crepes and Kavas popped up, and since they are on the way back out to the valley(super easy to get off Muldoon exit, then use the boundary light to get back on Hwy) stopped to p/u! (I called in the order-Crepes x2) I was greeted by a super nice man, and then a very pleasant girl walked up with my order. She added whipped cream to his order bc he was going to eat it right then, and the one I took home none(so it didn't melt) I also got a piece of Mango cake. When you come in, it's as though you're eating with family. The servers are a down home kind of friendly that equates to the sister who is equally sassy and pesky. Love them girls. As for the food, it's tasty and abundant, and best of all, it's real. You're not going to find rubbery Krusteaz pancakes. They're real. Perfect bacon and big fat ham steaks. 3.5 Stars Overall 3.5 Stars: The restaurant itself is a family owned place where the locals come for a good breakfast with Hawaiian twist. The menu has a lot of food items which includes a few lot of Hawaiian food: IE Loco Moco, Spam, Ono pancakes, Chicken Katsu, etc. There are 30 or more booths and tables which can seat 1-12 or more people. The decorations are plain and simple with a few Alaskan and Hawaiian theme wall hangings. Love the vibe - casual and friendly. Service 3 Stars: Arrived around 10 on a weekday and just missed the breakfast rush; thank goodness. Plenty of seats available and I was seated immediately. Ordered the coffee and waited about 15 minutes for the food. Server was pleasant but forgot to bring cream when I ordered the coffee. It wasn't too busy during that time. Coffee arrived about 10 minutes after I was seated and ordered it. Now, this isn't a "ding" to her because I believe the coffee was freshly brewed and came in its own separate container. Hot and fresh. Within 15 minutes after I received my breakfast and started enjoying the meal, she arrived with the ticket and didn't ask if there was anything else I wanted. Food: 3.5 Stars Kavas Combo - 2 Pancakes, 2 Bacon or 2 Sausages and 2 Eggs (anyway you like it) $16.50 The food was good but wasn't exceptional. It is a hearty and satisfying breakfast. The bacon was medium cooked (little crispy and a little bit limp). It has an applewood taste which I like. The only negative would be the actual size of the pieces of bacon. The two sizes remind me of "papa bear and baby bear" one much bigger than the other. View pics for comparison. The eggs over easy were prepared wonderful however the egg was broken by the time it reach my plate because the pancakes were soaking it up. The pancakes were light, slightly sweet and fluffy but not as fluffy from another breakfast place I recently reviewed. 5 Stars for the Coffee. As stated above the coffee was freshly brewed and it reminds me of Kona coffee in Hawaii. A dark rich dark color and strong! So good! It brought back great memories sipping on the hot coffee and viewing the waves from the ocean on a cloudy and breezy day with my wife. Good times! NOTE: like most businesses, there is a 3.5% charge when using a CC. I prefer for them (all businesses) to raise the price of the food items and remove the additional charge. Just my opinion. Cash is King if you don't want to pay the additional CC charge. So, I recommend this place but I would try some of the Hawaiian menu items. With that said, I wouldn't come here specifically for the breakfast items. It was good but not great. read more

Large portions for an affordable price. The food is so tasty, regardless of what you order. My aunt had a stuffed french toast with a pineapple/coconut glaze thing. SO GOOD. We come in often when we are in Muldoon. Today we stopped in for a late lunch after 2PM. They have some new items to offer in the way of Lunch Specials for $10.00 and daily lunch specials for the same price. There are five lunch specials that are available every day. I had one of the specials which was a hamburger and top of a large portion of Mashed potatoes smothered in brown gravy with onions. It was delicious and ample. My wife had a Senior lunch offering of a Club Sandwich with onion rings. Again the sandwich filled with turkey and lettuce, tomato, and mayonnaise. Well toasted on bread. She choice of onion rings or French fries. She said her sandwich was excellent and well made. The onion rings were deep fried to a crispy bite. No greasy or soft and real onions. I also had a choice of white rice or the mashed potatoes. We both had ice water. As always this restaurant met my expectations and the waitress was friendly and efficient. I've been wanting to visit Kava's for years and I wish I'd gone sooner! Restaurant was clean and cozy. Server was very warm and hospitable. Menu has standard American breakfast fare as well as some Hawaiian dishes like loco moco. I wanted to try their chicken katsu loco moco but unfortunately they were out of katsu the day I went. I ordered the California omelette (Swiss cheese, spinach, mushrooms, avocado, and bacon) with pancakes and home fries. They were also out of avocado so I just got the omelette without it. I would have preferred the cheese inside of the omelette instead of on top and spinach that was more fresh than cooked, but otherwise I was satisfied. Pancakes were huge and fluffy. Home fries were well seasoned and cooked. Prices are lower than what I'd expect given the generous portion sizes and the fact this is Alaska where restaurants tend to be pricier than the rest of the country. I'm more of a savory breakfast kinda person one order would be perfect to share with somebody else who feels that way. They serve breakfast all day so I chose the Farmers Skillet and my dining partner had the BLT. Food arrived fairly quickly, hot and appetizing. More like a zero stars!!! We had 4 people. Walked through the door and got seated right away. We sat for a good 20 minutes with no service whatsoever before another group came in and sat down. We waited patiently while servers walking past not acknowledging us. Then the people that came in after us got served their drinks and we still got no service, not even asked if we wanted drinks. There is a surprising amount of traffic between Hawaii and Alaska, maybe it's because we both don't feel linked to the "lower 48"/"mainland". Anyway, there are more than a few breakfast joints in town with flourishes of Hawaii. Kava's makes it explicit with its name. (can you get Kava up here, btw? Asking for a friend...) This is my first time at this location. And it seems cleaner and more friendly than the other location (they are only a few miles from each other, not sure how that makes logistical sense?). Great diner food with lots of unique Hawaiian takes. If you get pancakes, make sure you tell them you want FARMER's pancakes. The are kind of halfway between a pancake and a crepe, they're awesome. They also have straight-up crepes here, with lots of sweet, dessert-like toppings...if that's your thang. read more

I really enjoyed my pancake combo breakfast with eggs. The bacon could've been cooked a little longer, but that's personal preference. My friend got the Kavas Huevos and that looked amazing! He had no complaints and said it was packed with flavor and a nice heat. Coffee was mediocre, but the service and food was great. HOLY YUM. This was my first time trying a Hawaiian style restaurant and never would have guessed that their breakfast is unreal. A local friend recommended coming to Kava's because of the bang for your buck portions. Our group of four ordered the breakfast fried rice, the breakfast melt, and two loco mocos. The loco moco was one of the best breakfast meals i've ever had, although the combo sounded weird at first. Our two attendees who lived previously in Hawaii were also impressed. I like kavas. I don't go out of my way to eat either location, but they're pretty satisfying. I like quite a few things. First and foremost they are always friendly! That is something I cannot dock them on at all. Both locations are full of friendly folks. Recently ordered takeout from them and did a special. If you're in quarantine I recommend checking it out as their breakfast specials have been around $5 for a short stack, bacon and eggs. McDonald's can't even compete with that! Plus it's supporting local. My issue lately is I did takeout and assumed all my order was in the bag. It wasn't. I paid $4.95 for a slice of their amazing mango cake, but it wasn't in the bag. Quarantine had me driving across town for the food to begin with as midtown was closed and by time I realized it wasn't there I wasn't going to deal with it. I contacted them about the error with no response. It is what it is. If you want large portions diner style this is a good place. I like the breakfast fried rice with spam and eggs over hard. I love going to Kavas but my last visit there several months ago it was a roach on back of seat my friend pointed it out. We got up, I called the waitress over and showed her and she tried to act like she didn't see it. I said it's right there. It's still crawling on back of the seat . I pulled up Kava"s reviews, the reviews showed people found a roach in food or on their plate and they had taken pictures of it still sitting in Kava's restaurant . This means the restaurant needs to be fumigated so if it's on the plates and in the food, They are in the kitchen area on counter tops. read more
