Meeting a friend for coffee, she recommended this place because it's a near by her. Upon entry, it is a has a casual vibe with a place packed for people there to work, converse, or have a simple lunch meal. The lady at the cashier was sweet and was helpful for me to place my order. Bake goods look like they were premade so decided to go with a blueberry muffin and a latte with soy milk. Cashier was quick to make my latte and give me my order. Both latte and muffin are average, but the place was loud with music that we end up leaving because it was hard to have conversation. I'm increasingly frustrated that the younger man working the register is rude and can't remember a basic order. In addition, when I told him there was an error in the order (I could see on the screen) before paying, he argued with me and said I never told him. This is the third or fourth time I have a negative interaction with this person just trying to place my order and him not being able to manage and then gaslight me (and it's not a challenging order) I love Cafe Amrita and have been coming for years off and on, but I might not be able to go in any more since every time lately it is stressful to just place the order with him. The atmosphere, aside from ordering, is great. I rushed in as the rain was picking up, I wanted to get productive on my laptop for an hour, and eat something low budget yet unprocessed. The table pictured is where I went but only a lady was sitting on the far side & all other tables were full I at least needed to handle an urgent piece of biz on my laptop so I sat quickly to do. A server is yelling my number next to me and he's trying to ask the lady can he sit my food there while pointing at a sign that says "reserved" . Thankfully the lady looked confused by him (they have a language barrier I noticed) so he annoyed laid my plate down. I was thankful I wasn't told to move bcus I was already not happy there. Ultimately it's no one's fault. I think it could've been handled tactfully. I think they should have a 1-2hr limit if they have issues with squatters since she's so good at calling ppl out. Also, there were two men sitting with newspapers...would they also be considered squatters if they stayed over 1-2hr limit in the same spot? What's the policy solving for? I digress, the environment wasn't my type it's old & beat up when I prefer pretty cafes but the BEC was the best I've ever had. And I bet the giant ginger cookie is good. Would not recommend...they have a low health score I just read thanks to Yelp. If I could give this cafe negative stars, I would. I came across this space due to it being open later than other cafes & fairly reasonable prices. Size is quite large & seemingly a good place to do some reading & writing. The first time was fine, just grabbed a tea. Second time grabbed a cookie. Today, I just attempted to complete a 3rd visit only for the rude man behind the register to come to my table asking if " I wanted anything & I hadn't bought anything". This only after 3 minutes of me sitting down, attempting to wait out the crowd formed at the register. I then told him that I will come up only for him to rudely spat, " You only bought a cookie last time". I've never experienced anything like this. Beyond the fact that I'm being surveilled & pressured to buy things I do not want, the service is not great, cleanliness is not of standard & staff is not welcoming. A woman sitting next to me also witnessed what occurred and was very disturbed by that behavior. We both cut our visits short. No customer should ever have to deal with hostile environments created by business owners. This is a terribly ran business. read more

My friend and I were visiting the city and hoping to find a cafe on our way to Central Park. Cafe Amira fit the bill. The iced coffee tasted fresh and the bacon, egg, and cheese was the perfect size: big enough for a meal but not disgustingly huge and wasteful. There were a few others inside working and/or chatting and we both remarked how we longed for such a cozy cafe near our home. I wish we'd grabbed a couple of cookies for our drive home. The food and drinks are alright but most of the female workers are incredibly rude, specifically the women that work the cash register. I ordered a large iced chai and was given a small and was told that is the "large" when I've been to this establishment multiple times and have been given a larger volume in the past (24oz I believe) and can see other people in the cafe with larger cups. Is consistency not important here? The drink was almost completely ice. I was rushed at the register and couldn't even finish my order before the cashier was yelling the total at me. $22 for a bagel and cream cheese and a drink is not worth it here. Café Amrita is a really cute place. I've been there several times and really enjoyed their food. When I went in and ordered, I got a southwest panini which is was excellent. The bread was crisp and everything was flavorful. It's my favorite thing on their menu right now. I would definitely get that again. Sadly, they don't have it on the Postmates menu. They have all the other paninis but that one. So if you're looking on their don't bother. When I ordered another panini on the menu one time, it was also really good. However, the second time I ordered that exact same panini, it came as a wrap. So that was a little upsetting that they screwed up my order. The wraps definitely are not as good as the paninis. I don't think that experience is enough for me to say I'm not eating there again. Stuff happens. Besides, their food is really good! However it would be beneficial for them to update their Postmates menu, especially during the time of corona when people are staying in so much. This place really deserves more stars for a number of personal reasons. However, I'm not certain those reasons would be equally as appealing to the average crowd. Cafe Amrita is a cafe by day and a local hangout for those who get it's vibe by night. When you first walk in, you may be fooled into thinking that the laptops, coffee and pastries indicate that this is a mom and pop version of Starbucks. If you believe this, you'd be missing out on a unique experience. They have a varied menu which includes breakfast items, sandwiches and finger foods. Their coffee is decent but I mostly stop by this place in the afternoon. They offer Stella Artois on draft and have a fully stocked bar. The service is always friendly and relaxed. I find myself having conversations with staff and other patrons in a way that makes this place an inviting cafe in my travels. The well maintained bathroom is in the back beyond the bar. They feature a number of televisions that readily offer sports and/or news and usually honor channel requests. It is not for everyone but at the same time it has a little bit of everything. This winner definitely fits the bill with affordable prices and a happy hour that can't be beat. read more

This place is a throwback to a less busy time with a true community vibe; people here actually greet neighbors passing by on the sidewalk. It also is close to Columbia University, so the mix is both neighborhoody and smart. Unlike Starbucks, it is also unique; the first time I was here, they were playing Brazilian music; the next time jazz, etc. None of the music was loud enough to make convo difficult. And the bartenders? One time, I ordered the sangria, served without fruit. Asked to improvise something, the bartender did not say "That's the way we make it!" Really nice low key spot. I was doing a little work in the area and wanted a pick me up. I grabbed a couple mochas (1 for me, one for my buddy). They don't use powder, it was honest to goodness chocolate bits. The drink was delicious, and got me through a very tiring morning. The place itself was really cute. They have a small bar in the back, the coffee area is up front as is the food. Unfortunately, I wasn't feeling a delicious little bite, because they had pastries and brownies. What a great small cafe! We came here for breakfast and I had an Americano and the egg, cheddar bacon croissant sandwich. It was delicious but I wish the size of it was just a bit bigger (think of something you make at home compared to what you expect when you go to a restaurant). The ambiance is great with the music playing quietly in the background and the classic movies on the tv. Some seating inside, but it seems like it's a place people come for a cup of coffee but stay to "complete their screenplay" (if you get my coffee house reference). You can make your coffee the way you like it, they also make freshly squeezed orange juice. I ordered an omelette and an everything bagel. The food was delicious. It was a good portion of food and everything was hot and it didn't take long to receive the food though it was busy. They have outdoor seating also for your choice. Came here thinking I could do some work since there was a ton of open seats and every "cafe" I've been to allows people to have laptops. They don't have their menu or prices easily accessible online so I ended up paying $20 for the house salad. I finally sat down just for them to tell me that they don't allow laptops or studying on "brunch weekends". The older lady who told me was really rude and no where was this policy online, otherwise I wouldn't have come. Definitely didn't think the food was worth the price considering I just got a basic salad with chicken, and the experience I had with the worker left a bad taste in my mouth. I also saw her being rude to other customers and coworkers as well, which is very telling of how they view their customers. There is a short, dark haired, miserable older woman that works behind the counter who should be fired. I've been to Cafe Amrita enough times before writing this review because I wanted to give multiple chances to this establishment. Sadly, I have had my last straw because of the poor customer service of that discourteous woman. On my very first visit, when I walked in I initially stood at the front waiting to be seated. There was no greeting, she was absolutely ill mannered and left me with an unfriendly experience. Each time I have gone to this place after that, the impertinent woman has maintained the same demeanor and energy. During my last visit, I was with my niece who is a toddler. I gave her a small snack to have with her sippy cup of water & the insolent woman approached us and said that outside food and drink was not allowed. Chill spot near Morningside Park where there's not much else around. Tasty strong sangria that will sneak up on you. Laid back and chill vibe. To me it resembles a dive bar version of Starbucks. Very nice cafe a 5 minute walk from my apartment adjacent to the north end of Central Park.  They have very good coffee drinks.  Bagel with lox and cream cheese is very good too.  Croissants and the like are also available here (I like the chocolate version of the croissants) and in the warm months, ice coffee is quite good.  Waffles and other breakfast items.  I will order the waffle with fruit next visit here when I'm hungry and a croissant won't be enough.  Egg items also available. I do not use wifi at cafes because it's not safe for the work I do, but they offer that here if you wish.  The people who are working here are rather nice all the times I have come.
