Came back to Cafe Amici in Wyckoff upon the invitation of the owner via Yelp for both a lunch and dinner. I have confirmed on the sign that it was the Wyckoff branch due to the owner doubting I patron his establishment. That and I live only the next town over, about a mile away. I would love Cafe Amici to turn into one of the highlight cafes in the Tri-State, so I'd have somewhere to go without having to cross a bridge, hence my long review in the hopes it helps get Cafe Amici there.
My rating remains, "Meh, I've experienced better." The display case of dessert and cannoli offerings are rather skimpy as my previous visits. The sandwiches are priced substantially higher than other comparable establishments for the equivalent quality.
The entrance way is still rather confusing in design. Upon opening the door, you are in a narrow hallway not in direct access to the dining establishment. Upon getting into the establishment, you are squished between the wall and the dessert display case. Not conducive for the lunch or dinner rush.
Being seated in good time, I took notice of some of my critiques of my last experience. There were still some of the waitstaff gathered behind the dessert display case socializing and not noticing other patrons looking for water refills or some other requests.
The Chicken Soup is still a fair bit salty in comparison to other area establishments such as The Glen Rock Inn. I did find white meat chicken chunks in the soup that still held it's fiber, and can tell it was prepared that day.
Ordered the Black Bean Salsa Salad specifically to re-judge the shrimp. There has been an improvement in the shrimp preparation and tasted better. Not over cooked as the previous time.
I also ordered the Hanger Steak Salad. Hanger steak is an extremely tender cut of beef, and I'm thrilled they are using it in this salad.
The Ahi Tuna BLT is overly seared and the Ahi Tuna quality itself uses a very lean part of the Tuna. Since there is less fat content, searing just a second or two would be enough. It would be a healthier choice to use a slightly fattier Omega-3 rich portion of Tuna; not necessarily Chu, or Oh-Toro cuts, but something with a bit of fat lines as a constructive comment. Besides that, the color of the tuna was not brilliant red or even close, but a dull pink which is aesthetically less appealing.
The Short Rib Sandwich is slow braised but the taste is a bit lost, and is hard to differentiate from a Pulled Pork. Still delectable, but can use a tweak to identify the premium ingredients better. The thinner ends of the French Fries are still over crisp to the point of oil soaked char, and the center a bit squishy. Perhaps if the French Fries were cut more uniformly, they would fry evenly.
The Crab Cakes could use less filler and more lump crab meat, but for the price point is okay.
The Hanger Steak dinner entree was overdone to my liking, and after trying to flag down my waiter for a bit, gave up.
I'd love to see a CIA dessert specialist or someone of that caliber give a go to the dessert selection. A mini-chocolate bombe, or something to grab people by it's looks and tastes for wow factor. It's something that would get people's attention in the display case.
The decor is very white wall and bare. Could use a bit more character.
Observing the demographic of patrons that come to Cafe Amici, it's missing the teenage and college crowd that cafe's usually thrive on as the happening place to be. Usually the price point, desserts, and decor can factor into this.
Also perhaps extending the summer hours as a safe and local late teen hangout. Take advantage that the Suburban Diner and State Line Diner are both under construction and build your customer base that they otherwise would have as the late night hangout of the area.
The attention to service still needs to be brought up with the wait staff, and I would like to see the pastry/dessert selection expanded. Improve those areas and you'll have a third star. read more
