Stopped off the highway and pulled up to the unpretentious restaurant front and thought " I don't know " but, am I glad we followed through! Funky and cool! The breakfast salad I had was local, fresh, upscale and unique. Fresh cured egg yolk garnish was a pleasant surprise, fresh greens and vegetables with a balance of tangy finish! Who would have thought! Every plate was phenomenal! The food was freshly presented and locally sourced! With 40 years as a chef working and dining around the world I virtually amazed and won't soon forget the experience! If there were 6 stars in Yelp I would give that to the establishment. Wouldn't recommend coming here if you're from out of town. It's not a 'cafe' where you would expect to grab a cup of coffee, but a 'diner' where you are expected to sit, eat, and follow pre-established rules. Even when being up front with asking if we can grab some coffees to go, we were seated at a table and not allowed to use the rest room, or order our to-go coffees like we asked for. I'm in love with this sweet cafe. It's cute, inviting, warm & friendly and the food was delicious. Sitting out back on the wisteria shaded deck was the perfect lunch. I had the chicken salad and avocado on a flakey, buttery croissant. The smell of the croissant transported me back the the Summer I visited France in 1992. It was that good. The chicken salad was fresh, meaty and had grapes and pecans in it. My husband had the meat lovers omelet - he really liked it! The toast was thick homemade bread. I also had a mango iced tea. Wow! Fresh crushed mango at the bottom? Heaven on a hot day. We live far away but already planning a stop here when we pass through again next year. read more

This is a tiny place in Deposit, NY. I don't know how they decided to open here, but so glad they did. It has perhaps 8 tables inside and another 6 on the lovely outside patio. Their menu is locally sourced for the most part and changes as the seasons change. Everything is made fresh there, including the baked goods. The owners are there everyday they are open doing the work in both the front and the kitchen. The food I have had is great and the food others have looks terrific. I have never heard anything bad here, except, the wait can get long if they get crowded. They will tell you the wait may be longer than usual, and they wont be upset if you cant wait. this is most likely to occur on National Holidays. If you are in the area looking for a breakfast or lunch this place is worth a visit, drive by Wendy's if coming off Route 17/future 86 and come here. Parking on the street, always seems to be available. And it is dog friendly on the patio. read more

Phenomenal! A breakfast/brunch gem that shouldn't be overlooked. Small cafe type atmosphere with back deck garden seating crafted from an old house is a perfect setting for having one of the best breakfasts you might have ever had. And the food? Amazing! Do yourself a favor and try the Pecan crème brulee French toast, it's like "breakfast dessert" and is perfect for at least one person to get when you have two or more people so you can all have a bite of sweetness. I had the most popular item, which is the biscuits and gravy w/sunny side up egg and spicy chicken sausage. Fantastic. One other in our group had the basic bacon, eggs, and home fries, which were also excellent. For those who dwelled on price in other reviews, you're not catching the drift here. All food products are locally grown or raised and hormone free, so free range chicken and eggs, as well as the awesome bacon are not provided to you from Sam's Club like you'd find at a typical cheap breakfast joint. You get what you pay for, and here it's memorable, delicious food with a warm quaint atmosphere. Perfect! 5-stars without a doubt. New owner, same quality. Kevin recently reopened Butterfields and he is just as kind to his customers as his predecessor. I ordered the loaded sausage gravy and biscuits which was basically everything and the kitchen sink when it comes to breakfast food. On top of Kevin being great with customers his kitchen staff seemed to be enjoying themselves too. Can't wait to get back and try some more items on the menu. read more

This is a true gem in the middle of nowhere! Great if you are traveling upstate from NYC and want to stop for a great lunch or breakfast. The coffee is on the dark side (which is great if you love strong bold flavor) and the people working here are extremely nice. There is FREE WIFI! Which is a big deal because Wifi is a hot commodity around these parts. The food is fresh and delicious and this cafe has the County charm big city folks crave once in a while. Definitely make a stop here for brunch/lunch if you are passing Deposit NY on way to NYC or upstate. It is 3 hours outside NYC. Service: Top notch and super friendly as though you are local. Owner George and other regular customers who eat their are also super nice. They were even kind enough to let me bring dogs in since it was cold out during drive. They have 3 cats regularly walking around. Ambiance: Super cozy as though you are eating over a good friends house. They have plenty of outdoor seating in back and on side for warmer weather. Super clean bathroom showing pictures of building before owner renovated to restore. Food: Yummy. It was so good I took a lot to go. Me and a friend were suggested this place, and at first we weren't really sure about it. Boy, were we wrong. The food is so fresh and I had the best chicken tacos of my life. If you appreciate quality service & not salty, rude employees, then do not go here. Also- this is a sit down diner, not a cafe or "coffee shop". We thought this was a coffee shop that we could stop by & grab a quick cup to go... I am actually amazed at how rudely we we're treated over simple miscommunication. Some friends & I thought this was a "cafe" so we arrived from out of town thinking they sell specialty coffee- not just diner coffee. After we sat down & realized this was not a cafe but a breakfast diner, we were discussing whether or not to leave or stay when an employee came over & snapped at me for using the bathroom. I profusely apologized for whatever miscommunication happened (at the time I wasn't really aware why she was very harsh towards me) & she responsed with "there's a Wendy's down the road if you can please leave". Then she said they were closing (it was 2pm, they close at 3pm). I continued to apologize & the lady seemed to calm down a bit, but when I apologized to the rest of the employees for whatever happened (I'm still not sure what we did other than realize it was a diner and not a coffee shop) they continued to be rude to us. I have seriously never been this confused or offended by a coffee shop- and I have visited some rude coffee shops in my travels. I'm still so confused as to why there was such harshness towards me in my interaction with this lady & why our business was not welcome. read more

What a warm, friendly, hopping place...a boon to the village of DEPOSIT, NY. It's a lovely day, there's music outside this Saturday and a crafts fair outside. It feels as if Deposit, NY is coming out of a 50 plus year depression and going to be as thriving as it was in the fifties and sixties. Front street has gotten a renewal with brick sidewalk areas, new trees, and benches. What a great place to find only 3-1/2 hours north of NYC. Definitely worth stopping. Enjoy! read more

We passed through on a road trip to Canada, as we're always trying to find a cute place to stop. We were delighted to find Butterfields Cafe! The food was delicious and a step above any breakfast place for at least an hour in each direction. I had the breakfast egg plate--the eggs were a perfect over medium (what I had asked for) and the bread was perfectly toasted, light, and freshly baked. My sister had the BLT, which she enjoyed. The coffee was wonderful! And our waitress was very friendly and sweet. My one recommendation would be to exchange the veggie straws on the lunch menu for potato chips--no fryer needed, and much tastier. I stopped by on my way back from Niagara Falls and had an unexpectedly delightful meal. It's a very small place and I ended up waiting for ten minutes or so at 1:30PM on Memorial Day. But it was definitely worth the wait. The Chicken Parm wrap and Pecan Chicken Salad Croissant Sandwich that were on the lunch menu were delicious. Their breakfast French toast was good too. Their Mac and cheese was okay, but not as good as the others. We ordered a white bread to go, but wouldn't recommend it to other people. read more

I really wanted to give this restaurant 5 stars but I cannot. I read the reviews thought this was the place for an awesome meal. It is so cute, Mayberry throwback atmosphere. As for the food it was so so. My husband ordered the biscuits and gravy with the egg, it was soupy not properly thickened. He said it was just ok. It's served with only 1 egg he ordered another, thought that for over 9$ for breakfast it was overpriced. I ordered the cranberry pecan salad with chicken, the chicken was dry, probably cooked the day before and not a lot of pecans. The dressing was delicious. We were there around 11am on a Thursday. The locals from the area are very friendly. Free smells of fresh baked fill the air! Overall I would give this restaurant another chance, I know it must of been an off day, we all have them now and then. read more
