The answer came when we were invited to a private event at the Pheasant Tail a couple of months ago. I knew right away this was the way to go. The space was perfect and Craig and his team were so accommodating that there was no doubt this was where we would celebrate this important milestone. Craig worked with me to determine the buffet menu and the price and he took care of the rest. He even took care of a special request for dessert for my sister who was also celebrating her birthday. When we arrived the food was ready to go and Adam manned the bar. Everything went perfectly and when it was all over the team made sure all of the food that was leftover was packed up in trays and boxes for us to take with us. Our guests raved about the food but it was how easy and convenient Craig made the whole experience that I am most grateful for. My wife had the fish and chips which was huge and I had a delicious barbecue pulled pork sandwich. The pork is smoked at the tavern. One long table and another perpendicular to that forming a tight L shape. Soups and salad were on another small table and the desserts on yet another, all in the main corridor of the restaurant. Additionally the dishes were not labeled and what I thought was mushrooms turned out to be Brussel sprouts. Prime rib was not on the menu but it is offered at other times. The pies were not cut and their positioning on risers made getting a slice very difficult. The food was very good and no one left hungry but the cost exceeded the value of the experience. I happened on this beach a couple of weeks ago because I was in the area for my best friend's…read morebachelorette weekend! And you know what, it was the most random awesome thing that has happened to me this summer. We drove down to this little inlet where very American music (read: Bon Jovi) was playing at a fun level and families were frolicking in the lake with their kids. A giant American flag was flapping high in the sky. The grass was bright green, the water warm and clean, and the lake was surrounded by the vastness of trees. It was so bucolic. We spread our towels down on the grass and hung out snacking and reading. Nobody gave us weird looks for being the most diverse group of girls there. The area for swimming and hanging isn't very large considering that Highland Lake itself is pretty large. There was a dock in the lake where the kids were clowning around on, as well as motor boats people were using to boat around Highland Lake. It was gorgeous and seemed like the town's best kept secret summer secret. There was a 5 dollar charge to get access to the water, but there were restrooms and a small restaurant with a patio. No alcohol on the beach but I'm pretty sure they served alcohol inside the restaurant. A great day trip if you're ever in the area!

It's one of those weekends where you get to step into your kid's world a bit and actually see why they love it here. Bars and restaurants were lively but manageable, people were friendly, and it had that perfect mix of college fun and family atmosphere. Definitely a weekend worth making the trip for... we'll be back.

While we drank, she lounged around. There's only one picnic-sized table, and no seats at the bar. So we stood by the bar to grab a flight- and since there wasn't any "real" food, we grabbed a bag of pretzels and chips to snack on. Eight beers on tap and five per flight, so we opted to try the White IPA, DIPA, Belgian style ale, azacca IPA, and the hard apple cider. Everything looked, tasted, and smelled great! The bartender was friendly and helpful throughout, and answered all of our questions. There's nowhere to eat in the area and not much other reason to be in the area, but if you happen to be passing through then this place is certainly worth a moment of your time.
