I've stopped at a LOT of breakfast places between Binghamton and NYC along Route 17 - and I accidentally stumbled into what has to be the best breakfast along that route. It's not cheap - but I wasn't looking for cheap - I was looking for good - and this is it. Everything is home made, including the bread for the toast, with real butter, and the sausage gravy. Proper crispy home fries that tasted good. Pancakes and French toast come with real maple syrup. I think you get it. I'll be making a regular stop when I'm in that area. read more

As always while on one of our frequent trips from Long Island to Binghamton, we consulted Yelp to find the perfect spot for lunch. While there is always a diner, we like to find something out of the ordinary and worth continuing on for ....in this case about 40 minutes. As soon as we pulled into the sleepy town of Deposit, NY and up to Butterfields, we knew that the reviews had led us to that perfect spot that we craved. Quaint and charming without being frilly, this is really a great find. It seems that everything from the thick cut, fresh baked country white bread to the biscuits and baked goods are home made by George. I enjoyed the signature pecan chicken salad studded with raisins, while they guys had eggs that were perfectly...I mean perfectly cooked sunny side up and over easy with biscuits, chicken sausage and a peppery homemade country gravy. Chrissy kept our mugs filled with delicious coffee and cream. We couldn't resist sending our son back to college with a slice of the amazing looking apple pear pecan pie...an ample slice at that. There are resident cats who add to the charm. We walked in and felt the warmth immediately and after a great meal and nice conversation we left knowing that we would be back again. read more

Three of us e went here for Sunday brunch. The cafe itself is really cute. We loved the eclectic decor. However, the food was not good and way overpriced! We got 2 coffees, a water, 2 omelette specials and banana French toast. The total came to $54!!! The home fries and bacon were way overcooked and the omelettes were made with canned Tomatoes-gross! We just had a most delightful lunch here. Everyone's food was delicious, but the winner was the biscuits, gravy and eggs. We ordered a grilled cheese for our 2 year old, and the waitress was so thoughtful she substituted a side of fruit for the coleslaw without us even asking (which I'm sure would have been delicious too, but fruit is such a better bet for a toddler). We sat on the beautifully decorated back porch, and were able to walk around their lovely little country garden while we waited for our lunch & after eating. Yummy food, fabulous service. this restaurant turned my party and I away at the door before even stepping foot inside the building. They referred us to another restaurant which was very good in every aspect (Honey's Cafe). I had heard that this restaurant has a reputation for only catering to a certain type of person. The worker that "greeted" us was not polite, and our families have had bad experiences in the past. My friends and I were trying to enjoy a nice brunch while on a weekend trip, and I am honestly thankful that they turned us away. read more

We were fishing in the area and this place was recommended to us by our guide. FANTASTIC breakfast, everything was so wonderful and fresh. SO DISAPPOINTED. Two parties meeting up at a half-way point in Deposit, NY, so we planned on having a nice break from hours of driving by enjoying a meal at this highly rated cafe. Well, after nearly three hours of driving, both parties arrived from two different starting points to find the cafe closed on a Sunday, despite both Yelp and Google assuring us that it would be open. A little sign near the front door explained they were away on vacation. I get that because the end of summer is still the busiest time of year tourist-wise in central New York State. Thus our deep disappointment that despite all this great technology, we were somehow not informed of the cafe's closure on arguably one of the busiest days of the summer season. I do not want to be unfair and give just one star, because the cafe looks cute, and the picture of the food makes it look like something special, but given the other eatery choices in this, the Middle of Nowhere, everyone's plans for the afternoon were majorly disrupted by this. read more

Amazing find! I was avoiding the interstate and cutting off Binghamton. Decided to stop for a bite, thinking that I might find a pretty standard deli sandwich in a little shop that had a small sign outside that just said "Cafe Open". Almost missed it, but SO glad I didn't. They have organic, local foods. Everything is handmade on the spot. I had chicken salad wrap with grapes and walnuts, pepper slaw and cappuccino. The chicken salad was some of the best I've ever had and the pepper slaw was different and very good. The homemade baked goods looked so yummy that I ended up taking a sticky bun and zucchini bread to go. I almost didn't make it out without a piece of the fresh blueberry pie and now I wish I hadn't! There's no Starbucks around but this is even better if you need coffee while driving through through this intensely rural region. The food was not only amazing but the service matched. The owner was a lovely host and even recommended some other places for my brother and I to go. LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this cafe! They are a cute little place with photos of local people and houses. They have a deck out back or you can eat inside. They have activities and games around to occupy yourselves until your food comes out. Their food is awesome! They use only non gmo foods and most are fresh and locally grown or raised. The absolute BEST is their pecan French toast, yum. No lie, to die for! My husband and I have been there a number of times alone and we usually bring family and friends who visit there to eat. Charming little spot in the middle of nowhere. Get this! - Homemade biscuits smothered in sausage gravy and topped with a nice runny sunny side up egg. This dish was so perfectly homey and filling on a cold snowy day that my plate was zestfully clean when I was done. Creamy, rich and perfectly peppery seasoned = country comfort! Absolutely delicious. Came with roasted homefries and homemade toast. My husband had the chicken salad. Flavor was outstanding. Grapes, pecans, celery and a hint of cinnamon. Wonderful. Wonderful! When friends told me they bought Butterfields Cafe and that they had an Airbnb room to rent upstairs, I decided to check it out while visiting my son in Binghamton (only 35 miles north). The room was perfect: clean, quaint (in that cozy good way!), warm and welcoming. It included a kitchenette, private bathroom and porch, TV, and all the country touches (thank you, Julie!). Kevin delivered a delicious breakfast (their featured omelet) right upstairs to my room! I also spent a little time in the cafe and left with their delicious blueberry muffin and an apple tart pastry to bring to my son. Perfect visit! I will do it again!
