More like a 3.5? The shop is rly cute and the service is great. They explained all the sushi to me and introduced some of the hot items that were made fresh. I could smell the sushi rice before i even entered the doors. The raw pieces were really delicious. & Its not just plain fish (which wouldve been fine as well) but buri buri drizzles some sort of sauce on it and its fills your mouth with umami. However, i did not rly like any of the roll pieces. I mean, personally its just tempura or CA roll and that gets boring quick. This place is great for pics obviously, but you pay per piece so it adds up quickly.

I had recently visited a build-your-own sushi box restaurant in Seattle, and was SO excited to see Buri Buri open in Burlingame. My friend and I stopped by for dinner on a Monday evening. The interior was small and casual, with minimal decor and only one real table for seating. They also had a few benches outside, but Buri Buri is definitely intended for takeout. I immediately noticed that the sushi selection was limited. By 6:30 PM, they had run out of many roll and nigiri varieties, so it's probably better to go for lunch. The nigiri was more expensive than I had expected, but the rolls were more reasonably priced. Overall, I really liked the business model of being able to mix and match, and control your own portion size. The quality of the nigiri was generally good. However, the rice was a bit dry from sitting out in the open and kept falling apart into my soy sauce. I had been most excited about the Pressed Tuna Roll, but wasn't crazy about the execution. However, I did enjoy the nigiri and Double Hamachi Roll. Service was quick and friendly!

I finally got to check this place off my list!! I've been eyeing it ever since someone posted it on Instagram. We arrived right at opening and I was so overwhelmed with the amount of options. They all look so freaking good. There were 2 size boxes and I went with the bigger size. I felt like a kid at a candy store. That one, that one, that one. So hard to resist. Good variety of inari, nigiris, and sushi rolls. Honestly it was love at first bite. I devoured all of my food. Food was definitely fresh because I went early in the morning. Staff were super friendly and welcoming. Not a lot of seating tho but they do have foldable tables and seats. I can't wait to come back for more!!

Came on a Saturday 4:30pm and there was good amount of street parking available. Went inside the restaurant and was disappointed with the lack of variety. We got 10 pieces of sushi which came out to over $30. It felt overpriced but at least the fish was fresh. The concept is great but I don't think I'd come back unless they offer more variety.

Came here at 3:40 pm on a Tuesday, wasn't packed at all, lines flowed fast. PARKING: street parking mostly, some parking lots around the area since this is like a downtown shopping district. SURROUNDING: place is fairly small, only one table and chair to eat at, rest were pretty much benches, nice small space if you want something quick or on the go. FOOD: mixed bento of sushi + rolls, website offers the menu Unagi bento - super good, love the ribboned egg, comes with a few edamame and I loved the fried lotus root. Mango & regular matcha latte - nice umami taste, the mango had such a vibrant taste that complimented the flavor of the matcha well. You do not have to fill the whole box which is unique and helpful if you want specific sushi or rolls, they are super flavorful and fresh.

This place is a great idea in concept, but execution was ehhh. The good: - Unique flavor combinations - Multiple flavors, you don't have to commit to one - You can get as much or as little as you want Ehhh: - The rolls had thin slices of fish and most were filled with imitation crab. I would skip these and only go for the nigiri. The nigiri is more expensive ofc. - For a $50 box, I think I'd prefer the omakase box from another spot or a chirashi bowl.

    Jaky Y.

Good concept but execution needs work. I tried a bunch of pieces (spent $60+) and every piece had way too much rice. The rice was also very compact, mushy, and cold. Several pieces (squid, sea bream) were ridiculously chewy. Not all pieces tasted fresh. This is very much a grab-and-go place. They only have 2 seats inside and 1 small table outside.

    Eric Joseph D.

I like the concept of choose your own sushi but this place is kind of pricey and the tastiness of the fish is hit or miss. For 6 pieces, you are paying almost 20 dollars. Additionally, their full lunch meals like the salmon one are just okay. I still come here every once in a while but I think there are better places in the city that have a similar concept.

An awesome place for superb grab n go sushi!! This is a casual sushi counter where they sell everything one piece at a time. Even rolls like Dragon Rolls are sold by the individual SLICE, not by the entire roll! All rolls and nigiri reside behind a glass-walled counter. Wait in line, and when it's your turn, you just tell them which size take out tray you want, and as you scan what's available, you just tell them which pieces of sushi to load onto your little take out tray. mix and match by the piece! How awesome! Pay when you get to the end of the counter. It's excellent. Fish quality is quite good. I really loved my first visit here (even went back for seconds). I definitely can't wait to be back here! Limited seating alas this is more of a grab 'n go place. Friendly service with happy folks behind the counter. Business is pretty good here.. I got there about 20 minutes before noon, and people were beginning to queue up inside. They were bringing out new sushi every few minutes during lunchtime.

    Leona V.

Clean and cute storefront, walkable from the weekend farmers market! They have some seating outdoors but no shade for a sunny day. I wish they had a menu or put their rolls in the first half of the counter. It was really hard to decide which rolls to get on the spot. Their inari and nigiri weren't bad but the last few from the batch are a little beaten up and lacked sauce.

    Julie K.

I appreciate the concept where you can just essentially get a sampler of pieces for variety instead of committing to a full roll at normal restaurants. However, this adds up since they charge by piece depending if it's a nigiri or part of a roll. You have a choice between a small and a large box. They'll let you know when you're nearing the limit of how many they can fit in there. Also available are already made items like fruit and savory sandwiches along with rice bowl items. Got myself a small box and a fruit sandwich - total plus tax and tip was $40+. Food was ok - pretty fresh but nothing special. If I do go back, I'd skip the fruit sandwich. The bread was way too thick for the amount of filling ($9.99). Free water and iced tea (loved this) near the condiment station.

I was so excited to experience Buri Buri in downtown Burlingame, and it did not let me down! The store is on the fringes of it, which makes parking a bit easier but foot traffic a bit slower. I love a good build-your-own experience, and the nigiri and rolls here were delicious. I got 4 salmon nigiri, an unagi nigiri, TNT rolls that the worker recommended, and a curry croquette for $28. I enjoyed my meal plenty. The curry croquette was really yummy, I believe them when they say that they're made fresh every day! The rolls were tasty and the right amount of saucy. The nigiri was good, it won't knock your socks off but it's good quality fish and has a good fish to rice ratio! The interior has seating and it feels very chic and fits in with the rest of the downtown scene so much. This is a fantastic lunch for people that are on the go, people who want to experience a unique concept, or for those that want a bit of sushi (not too much!).

This is actually a Japanese kaiseki style restaurant. Reservations are highly recommended as they do not take Walk-ins. There's two seatings for this restaurant so arrive promptly as they serve everyone at the same time . We started with the amuse bouche which was the kobachi three way. The three ways they served this was very unique. It was prepared with one steamed, one in soup and one fried. All were delicious! Next was the sashimi and it was also served with three different fishes. They did serve it with crostinis which was really good with the olive oil. We got the simmered yellowtail collar and the Toro skewers next. The yellowtail collar did have a lot of bones so I won't recommend this for older folks. It was very tender but a little on a salty side. I did like how it came out eggplants. The Toro skewers were also very tender but that wasn't my main dish. My friend enjoyed it very much. The dungeness crab chawanmushi was by far my favorite. It has a streamed egg and crab meat. They didn't skimp out on this dish it had a lot of crab in it. My next favorite dish was the kaki-age donburi which was a scallop and shrimp tempura. It was dust with a green tea sea salt I think. I wasn't able to eat it with the soup and I definitely wasn't able to eat it with the rice. By this dish I was already full. We also had the soju flight which was originally three flights but we added a fourth one . We got the yuzu. Lemon, strawberry and grapefruit orange. They were all good but the yuzu is the main winner! Since it was my bday , they turned off all the hours of the restaurant and everyone sang happy birthday to me. It was a little embarrassing but it added a little special touch. This was one of the best experience I've ever had at a Japanese kaiseki restaurants. The servers were so attentive. The food was creative and you can tell they spent a lot of time perfecting everything. They do change the menu every season so I'm excited to try their next menu when I come back.

We went around 5 PM on a Tuesday, and it was nice and quiet, so we were seated right away. We started with the teppanji and then ordered the katsu curry and karaage curry. Japanese Curry, a sweet and mild curry, is very different from Indian and Chinese/Thai curry. Usually served w/crispy Tonkatsu and a cabbage salad, it can be hard to find. Finding good Japanese curry can be just as difficult. CHB satisfies on the Japanese curry savoriness front. While it's nothing fancy (that extends to their decor), it is housemade and delicious. Waitstaff was brisk and courteous. Was advised to not order more than what I had...he was right. Had leftovers to take home! Ordered the signature ORIGINAL KATSU CURRY w/pork. Other option is chicken. Steamed rice in a Japanese eatery is always top notch, always perfect and generous in portion here. The Tonkatsu was crispy but a tad short of tender, but tasty enough to dip in the accompanying Japanese curry sauce. I might ask for the curry sauce on the side next time. Cabbage salad, traditionally a huge portion was a small offering cushioning the Tonkatsu. Accompanied by a small scoop of house made potato salad and pickled veggies. The hot Tonkatsu, steamed rice and Japanese curry sauce was a great combo for me, a very filling and satisfying meal! CH offers a tabletop varied selection of chili peppers: Pequin, Wiri Wiri, Ichimi, Jalapẽno, Orange Habanero. I did a light sprinkling of the traditional Japanese Ichimi pepper to add a touch of heat and that was fine. Signature ORIGINAL KATSU CURRY was a great start to this menu tasting. I'll be back to try their DOUBLE MENCHI CURRY, KARAAGE CURRY, ASSORTED VEGGIE CURRY, KATSU CURRY UDON. CURRY HYUGA BURLINGAME is also one of the few places that has Omurice on its menu. So when we visit a sushi restaurant, we tend to evaluate everything as a whole -- price, quality, service, and of course the flavors. For dinner we ordered the Mango Tuna Roll (which was our first time trying a mango-style sushi roll), the 8-piece Omakase Nigiri, a Double Toro Roll, two pieces of Otoro, and a hot sake. With a 20% tip included, the total for the two of us came to $163.50, which honestly falls within the average range of what we usually spend for a sushi dinner like this. Normally we might pay around $120-$130 depending on the place, sometimes a little more if we add an extra item or two. The portion sizes were pretty standard. Not unusually large, but not small either -- similar to what we've experienced at many other sushi restaurants. Where this place really stood out was the depth of flavor. The quality and balance of the ingredients were excellent. At one point I actually caught myself closing my eyes just to focus on the taste, which is something I almost never do. The preparation felt very refined and the flavors were elevated, rich, and memorable. I would describe it as delicate portions with very elevated flavors. Because of that, I'm giving this place 5 out of 5 stars. This is the kind of restaurant that works perfectly for a nice dinner with your partner. It's not necessarily a place where you go wild ordering everything on the menu like at a taco spot. Instead, it's better to be thoughtful with what you choose and enjoy a few well-crafted dishes. You can easily have a special, enjoyable dinner here without going overboard. Definitely worth visiting if you're in the area and want a quality sushi experience with refined flavors. The only thing I felt was missing was a small welcome miso soup. In some sushi restaurants we've visited, they serve a tiny cup of miso with a couple pieces of tofu as a warm welcome. It's a very small gesture, but it creates a nice first impression and adds a sense of hospitality to the experience. Considering the quality and pricing of the menu here, a simple welcome miso soup would fit perfectly with the overall dining experience.

(this happens when trying to order and also when trying to pay ) And really unfortunately, the food wasn't as good by any standard as it was in the past. I'm not sure if it was a fluke, but the bento box (katsu, chicken katsu, and especially the chicken teriyaki) didn't hit that hard :( The Agedashi dōfu was definitely not great but tried it bc it's one of my favorites. We also got the Bashamichi special roll and the double Hamachi roll - which were alright too. (The wasabi here is on the weak side, but this doesn't affect the rating.) Overall, pretty "just okay" experience and sad that it wasn't as good as it was before :(

We've been to Hanabi many times, when they were a fledging ramen place we'd go there because…read moregrowing son (now in mid 20s) just loved the slurp and after baseball was the perfect meal. Fast forward, it's Mom's Day, kids having meals on their own as parents, our celebration is to go somewhere good to have a meal, no lines (didn't make a res), kinda spontaneous. Hanabi fits the bill. Ordered the pork belly ramen ( looked really good at a neighboring table) and the Mayu-ramen, spicy, with kfc chicken (not what you think, means something else), both with a miso base. Wait was reasonable, time to get a table was 30 seconds tops. Other nights it's been jammed but not Mom's Day, just quiet, enjoyable. Both meals were spectacularly reasonable, serving what you'd want, with enough of everything to want to dive in because you were pretty assured you were going to be satisfied. Not fru-fru or bougie, ingredients that make the dish memorable yet feel you are knowledgeable and appreciated. Pork belly was soft, fatty yet lean, cooked well enough to be tender, yet with a little chew (not disintegrating like some bellies), lots of noodles al dente so you appreciate the noodle was not a mushy mass in the bowl like some places. The Mayu came with 3 drumsticks burning hot from the fryer but oh so good because it's served in a separate dish so it doesn't get soggy. The spicy is good enough to keep things interesting with losing its identity (unlike a lot of places). And they give plenty of ramen because it's that good. We keep coming back because they serve no-frills, you-can-bank-on-it ramen that is satisfying, consistent; staff is friendly without being overbearing. It's not a big place, tables and a counter, but they know how to keep diners happy and coming back for more. What more can you ask for? Thanks, Hanabi, will definitely be back!

The miso here is like no other I have had anywhere else, deeply rich and flavorful. Very family friendly as well, with mini dons available for the little ones.
