The food was good, but the service was very slow. We came here on a Monday at about 12:30pm for lunch. It was not very busy. There were maybe 5 other tables besides us. We ordered a lunch bento box, tempura udon, omakase, and a rainbow roll. The bento box came first. By the time the 2nd dish arrived (the udon), the person who ordered the box was just about done. Then when the omakase came, the udon was almost gone. Then after a few more minutes, the roll showed up, and by then, 2 of us were done eating and just watched the other 2 eat. 4/6/25 I'm embarrassed to say that I have been to Amami Sushi Bistro a few times and haven't had a chance to write a review for them haha. The last two or three times I came here with my husband for dinner. We had ordered a variety of sushi rolls, which all taste tasted fantastic. The dinner hours are super busy, but you can get seated fairly quickly like within 10 minutes or so (at least from our experiences). In terms of parking, I highly recommend that you find parking along El Camino instead of in their parking lot. The parking lot is extremely small and can be tight. The most recent time we went there was for lunch and we didn't have to wait for a table. Here's what we got: - Gyoza - Spicy scallop roll - Yaki udon (mine) - Bento box: beef teriyaki with california roll (his) After trying out the udon, I think the next time I come here, I will stick to ordering their sushi. Unfortunately, the udon was very bland. Another disappointing thing was that the beef teriyaki was still very raw on the inside. After informing the staff, they brought out a new plate of beef teriyaki, but it took 20 minutes. The gyoza and the spicy scallop roll were the best items we had that day. What is consistent though is that the staff are very attentive and quick to take away dirty dishes. Affordable yet delicious omakase! One of my personal favorite places to get sushi. Their omakase set is under $50 for 10 LARGE pieces of nigiri. Each piece is carefully seasoned and flavored. Great option if you are looking for something slightly fancier than regular sushi but not as crazy as a $200 omakase meal. The restaurant does get very packed for dinner so I highly recommend that you call in the day before or at least a couple hours before to check for open reservations to reduce your waiting time. I mean the fish to rice ratio? each piece took me 2 bites (but please, don't ask me what the fish were) they also didn't tell us what order to eat them in but it was still a delicious meal. $42 as of recent. agedashi tofu: very light but crispy - I've never had it without the broth but the sauce? tastes JUST like that broth but it has a more oyster sauce texture to it. very filling. whole squid: not rubbery, the tentacles are all connected so the "little" piece of tentacle I thought I was getting was connected to the "knuckle" and another tentacle. comes with a good ponzu sauce, and the lemon is a must. special roll: it was good! unagi and king crab inside :) double tuna: spicy tuna inside and topped with tuna. I was too full to eat more but I'd definitely get this again. chicken kara-age: very light, also used the sauce from the squid + lemon. and so crispy! comes with complimentary ice cream: green tea and sesame were 2 of the options (I can't remember the other one), but definitely get the green tea unless you truly like sesame flavor - it's not black sesame. overall, I haven't been here in a while but the food quality hasn't changed. we came about an hour before closing but even for a Friday we seemed to be the last big party (of 4) to sit. read more

My husband and I always enjoy their raw bar here. Amami has always been one of those places for us where we dine if we are willing to spend. We see other customers order fusion rolls and tempura, but we always stuck with their raw bar. Truthfully, I would not recommend this as a place to sit and hang out with friends for more than 90-120 minutes. You won't be kicked out, but the team is hustling to manage a small restaurant space and serve all their walk ins for the evening. I encourage you to finish your meal and have a nightcap elsewhere. Amami is easily one of my favorite places to get sushi in the area. Maybe even the Bay Area,. Actually, maybe even the state. Not only are the individual roles really good, but the omakase in my opinion is top-tier. A fraction of the price for what you'd expect to pay at a traditional Omakase. It comes on one plate, which makes it easy to eat and a nice photo opportunity. I just wish there was a little card telling us what we're eating. Something else that sets this place apart as they are able to accommodate those who have food, allergies. My daughter has an allergy to a few things and they were able to accommodate her. We walked in as a party of five this past Wednesday around 5:45 PM, without a reservation, and were seated within a few minutes. Service stayed consistent with that first impression: prompt, polite, and friendly throughout the meal. This is a restaurant we come back to from time to time, even though it's a bit of a drive. Portions are generous and pricing remains friendly, especially given the range of fish they carry. The chalkboard specials are worth checking: the selection can read more like a compact omakase list than a neighborhood sushi bar. The seared toro tartare was a clear standout: finely minced tuna gently torched, layered over rice, and topped with avocado and shiso. Balanced, rich, and satisfying without feeling heavy. The seared toro topped with uni delivered a similar melt-in-mouth appeal, the warmth from the rice bringing the two together beautifully. The Santa Barbara uni itself was clean and sweet, served gunkan-style with crisp nori that held its shape. The Kobe beef nigiri was a fun, indulgent twist: quick sear, gentle glaze, and a soft, buttery finish that didn't overwhelm the rice. From the kitchen, the agedashi tofu showed good control: crisp surface, silken interior, and a sauce that leaned savory and a touch sweet. We also tried a broad sweep of the white-fish lineup: ma-dai, kuro-dai, shima aji, kanpachi: plus both Norwegian salmon and ocean trout. The quality and temperature were consistent across the board, though visually it can get tricky when several similar pieces arrive at once. Servers are friendly but not always quick to identify which is which, which is totally understandable when fish like kanpachi and shima aji look nearly identical, as do salmon and ocean trout. The 49ers roll made a good reset between richer bites: light, citrusy, and well-balanced. Overall, Amami Sushi Bistro hits a comfortable middle ground between casual and elevated. It's not aiming for ceremony or theatrics, just honest execution and fair pricing for a broad range of seafood. Lives up to its name and got me to dance in my seat. It's got Toro, avocado and eel with a little spicy sauce. Amount of rice wasn't overwhelming so you can really taste the fish. Loved this one and would get it again! *Teriyaki Chicken to go. I requested no salad, soup and rice since I had them earlier and will have leftover rice from sashimi dish. He said he will make it into an appetizer so it's cheaper. Idk what exactly that means bc I got a lot of teriyaki chicken, saved a few dollars and didn't waste food. Been here a couple times and it's safe to say its my favorite sushi restaurant around here!! All of their sushi tastes fresh and nicely wrapped. They put just the right amount of sauce and clearly care about their craft. Also, it does not take long for the food to come out. The shrimp tempura (5/5) was perfectly hot and crispy. They give you a a lot and each piece is a nice size. I can tell it was made fresh to order. The Amami Special (5/5) was very creamy and soft. You can tell there is real crab inside. The Melted in the Mouth (5/5) is one of my favorite rolls there. They are not kidding when they say it melts in your mouth. All of the flavors go so well together and they are buttery soft. Also, the rice is warm and soft, not soggy. Next, the Eel Lovers roll (5/5) tastes like the most jam packed unagi in a roll that you can imagine. The eel was sweet and tender. Highly recommend if you love unagi. The Lion King (4/5) not pictured was a bit small but nonetheless great flavor. I like that they don't overload it with sauce unlike other spots. Also it is easy to fall apart when you pick it up. The inside is imitation crab instead of real crab. The Crab Lovers (4/5) is for soft shelled crab lovers. The crab was crispy and contrasted the avocado nicely. This roll however was not very memorable compared to all of the other exceptional rolls we've had. The real crab on top is less noticeable in this roll because of the fried crab filling. Lastly, my new favorite will have to be the Wild Boy (6/5!) we got it without the wasabi sauce. Every part of the roll shined, from the large scallop on top to the spicy tuna. It was such a delightful roll. Nothing was fishy or off. I love the pairing of all of these fresh seafood. While it can be a bit loud even on the weekdays the food makes up for it. They also offered complimentary green tea and red bean ice cream at the end. read more

There are very few restaurants I would legitimately rate above a 4.2. My newest favorite Japanese restaurant on the Bay. I'm typically very whelmed by Blank Teriyaki in Japanese restaurants. Many restaurants in the US (and especially CA) take the lazy route of slathering bottled, prepackaged teriyaki sauce on frozen meats and serving it without a thought. I'm not shaming this, and it is delicious to many, but it is also not representative of the progenitor dish in any significant way. Much of the restaurant industry is now an assembly process rather than an edible art form. And worse off, you can taste it. Amami, however, cooks teriyaki direct from sauces, and it makes a world of a difference. It frequently feels like, and really should be, the bare minimum. But things would be much different if it were. Both their beef and salmon teriyaki were excellent. We had the Romeo & Juliet and Melted in Your Mouth rolls. The shaping is passable at best, but flavor and freshness were good. I hope they add more "unique" rolls, as many sushi restaurants in CA have the typical fill in the blank sports team roll, the spider roll, etc-- they're tried and true classics but do get monotonous. $27/head for the Dinner Combo is a bit pricey-- but a $20 fare for a similar combo with 3-4 pcs of sashimi is not uncommon amongst JP restaurants in the Bay Area. Their Dinner Combo has 6pcs of sashimi, so in all, about a $5 premium for a more authentic teriyaki. read more

My go to for an affordable cheap and easy omakase. The fish is always fresh and they give you really long pieces. Rice to sashimi ratio on point as well. As for the appetizers, I got the tofu and Edamame. They're what you expect, nothing special. Tofu had a sweet teriyaki sauce and was crispy. Now you might think I'm crazy for ordering the California roll with my omakase but I will say this is a very solid roll. It's very creamy and the rolls are thick so you are getting your value for sure. I know that they have several locations but I personally prefer this one only and I will be back. I think I've come enough where they remember my order now and the waiter is so kind. I usually get the server, Linda and she's amazing. Tried the other Amami Sushi in my neighborhood last Sunday night. I never tried it because the parking availability is always not great. However, we celebrated a buddy's belated birthday so I had my first opportunity. It was very good. The joint was packed for a Sunday evening and we were lucky to snag the last four-top. I'll be brief, this place was great. The sushi there was just as good as the other Amami. This guy ordered the Dragon Roll and the Tiger Roll. Wonderful. I tried to eat them as slowly as possible instead of gobbling them down like I had just returned from Survivor Island. It was not easy. Our buddy also enjoyed his bday dish and cleaned his plate like a champ. And our other friends also ate like there was no tomorrow. Service was very good and they never let us be forgotten, even this it was a packed house. To sum up: an excellent place for Japanese in my town. To quote the T-800; Ill be back. I've been here a couple of times and it's often busy so try to go early if you can. It's also best to carpool since there's limited parking. The first time I went I ordered the omakase and the fish tasted fresh. For the second visit, I ordered the Amami Special Roll - unagi, crab, and cucumber inside, topped with avocado that was perfectly ripe. We also had the salmon teriyaki and asked for it not to be well done and it was cooked to our liking. This came with a salad that had a good amount of dressing and lukewarm miso soup. The food came quickly but the service was mediocre. Although the servers checked on us, they didn't offer to refill our water. The tables were too crammed and close to each other that neighboring tables could hear our conversations and vice versa, and we barely had any personal space. The Rainbow Roll was also a very big portion. The only thing I disliked was the cucumber in the spicy tuna roll, but it was my bad for not asking for no cucumber. She ate it all. Plenty of food to share a few pieces with her little sister. Another (9) ordered sushi.... She loves her sushi! An Alaska roll and a salmon lovers roll. She ate ALL of it. She was very happy. I ordered the beef teriyaki entree. It came with soup and salad but my little one (6) took it all! She enjoyed MY soup and salad very much. It's her favorite part of the meal. Items ordered: - Hamachi Kama: Great flavor, not as much fish to eat but was still able to eat some. - Omakase: 10 pieces picked by the chef and they were all so delicious! I can't choose a favorite but each piece came with a large piece of fish on top and was paired nicely with the condiment/topping it came with. Definitely worth the price for what you get! You can easily feel full after eating this set. - Melt in your mouth roll: This dish caught my eye for its unique flavor and ingredients (toro in the middle and unagi on top of avocado) and I would get again! I love coming here for their omakase set, since it's an affordable omakase set with fresh pieces of nigri. Their nigri are long pieces, which makes the omakae set even better! I know I'm eating fish but some felt a bit chewy/fishy than when it used to be very buttery that it melts in your mouth. The soft shell crab should've came out first but it came out last with the tonkatsu so it was cold to me. My bf liked the tonkatsu but I felt the portion was a bit small.
