Lunch Bento with tonkatsu and sake sashimi
    Kathleen P.

The $16 lunch bento price was hard not to pass up on. It definitely filled me up, but my tonkatsu was on the dryer side. I ended up still eating everything though, so it was good enough lol! The salmon sashimi was fresh and my favorite part was the salad. It came with a light vinaigrette dressing. This spot is cute and cozy. I'd come back to try other sushi dishes.

Located in downtown Millbrae and unassuming from the outside, but fish freshness inside! Came here for a weekday dinner so it wasn't crowded and the servers were very polite. Miso soup was good but no tofu, and salad could've used more dressing. The Negitoro (fatty tuna, green onion) roll and there was wasabi inside, I enjoyed this. The Deluxe Sushi which included 8 pieces total - 2 pc tuna, yellowtail, halibut, salmon, shrimp, salmon roe, egg/tamago. The egg had a hint of sweetness. The yellowtail sashimi entree came with 10 pieces and soup & salad. Each piece of fish was fresh and delicious! I left feeling satisfied with, would come again to try their other dishes and specials.

The sushi here definitely emphasized quality over quantity. The freshness and flavor of the fish was so good, even the soft shell crab was a burst of flavor. We enjoyed the simplicity of the rolls. Other sushi places have over packed rolls where you can't really taste the individual flavors. This place seemed to value the ingredients. The servers were very polite and checked in frequently. The outside is very unassuming, we've passed by it many times but only tried it just now. Once you enter it has a very authentic Japanese aesthetic. We found it very cute and pleasant. (For 21+ the plum wine is a must try)

Whoa, this place is pretty much in my back yard and though I've been here for decades, never set foot in it, that's just how inconspicuous and hole in the wall tucked away it is. But step inside and it's the farthest cry from "dive" or hole in a wall type of place. This is a beautiful, refined, little restaurant with a sushi counter and little tables when though it was early on Friday evening, it was jam packed and bustling, we barely snagged a seat, without a reservation. This is hands down the place sushi place here in Millbrae, especially now that Zen is gone. We got their salmon toro nigiri, rainbow roll, gyoza, salmon/avocado roll, another salmon roll (needed to get in my Omega 3's lol :-) Super fresh and pristine fish, little embellishment needed, and man oh man their wasabi packs a punch, the strongest I've ever had. The gyoza not deep fried, but lightly sautéed with crispy shell and tender meat with a lively tangy dipping sauce, that's not soy-heavy. Their toro buttery and excellent quality rice. The seaweed salad needs more acid, not as citrusy or vinegary as I'd like. The service is amazing: super friendly and caring, attentive and even though they were busy, didn't miss a beat, very hard-working on top of oall the tables. It's a charming and quaint little place, authentic to the hilt. It's cute that instead of a consolidated paper menu or additional specials on a single board, they have papers clipped to the all, disparate and separate, detailing various chef's specials, daily specials, etc. It's like getting a prize every time you turn your head and bam: there's yet another special, and another ... the prices are very reasonable. But beyond the food, it's the service and warmth of the staff that's remarkable. Every single person went out of their way to make us feel cared for. It's extraordinary.

The staff are friendly, the restaurant is clean, and the extended hours are definitely a plus. Although the prices are a bit on the higher side, the ox bone soup I ordered was absolutely delicious. I didn't order their signature cheese beef hot plate, which costs close to $100, but seeing it served at another table, it looked incredibly impressive. If you're a meat lover, I think you'd really enjoy it. This restaurant is suitable whether you're dining alone or coming with a large family. Parking can be difficult on busy weekends, but it's generally manageable on weekdays. Overall, I highly recommend giving this place a try!

My husband and I had dinner here tonight, and overall it was a really memorable experience. We've…read moretraveled quite a bit and tried sushi in many different cities, including around the Los Angeles area where we live and have our favorite spots. So when we visit a sushi restaurant, we tend to evaluate everything as a whole -- price, quality, service, and of course the flavors. For dinner we ordered the Mango Tuna Roll (which was our first time trying a mango-style sushi roll), the 8-piece Omakase Nigiri, a Double Toro Roll, two pieces of Otoro, and a hot sake. With a 20% tip included, the total for the two of us came to $163.50, which honestly falls within the average range of what we usually spend for a sushi dinner like this. Normally we might pay around $120-$130 depending on the place, sometimes a little more if we add an extra item or two. The portion sizes were pretty standard. Not unusually large, but not small either -- similar to what we've experienced at many other sushi restaurants. Where this place really stood out was the depth of flavor. The quality and balance of the ingredients were excellent. At one point I actually caught myself closing my eyes just to focus on the taste, which is something I almost never do. The preparation felt very refined and the flavors were elevated, rich, and memorable. I would describe it as delicate portions with very elevated flavors. Because of that, I'm giving this place 5 out of 5 stars. This is the kind of restaurant that works perfectly for a nice dinner with your partner. It's not necessarily a place where you go wild ordering everything on the menu like at a taco spot. Instead, it's better to be thoughtful with what you choose and enjoy a few well-crafted dishes. You can easily have a special, enjoyable dinner here without going overboard. Definitely worth visiting if you're in the area and want a quality sushi experience with refined flavors. The only thing I felt was missing was a small welcome miso soup. In some sushi restaurants we've visited, they serve a tiny cup of miso with a couple pieces of tofu as a warm welcome. It's a very small gesture, but it creates a nice first impression and adds a sense of hospitality to the experience. Considering the quality and pricing of the menu here, a simple welcome miso soup would fit perfectly with the overall dining experience.

They also have great non-seafood options, I recently got the spicy lamb skewer, which was served warm, and seasoned and cooked to perfection. The first thing I noticed was that there was really not many pieces of ribs, maybe they made the ribs portion smaller to make room for the lap cheung I ordered? The dish description also says that it includes taro, but I didn't have a single piece of taro in my pot. Strangely, although this place seems to share a kitchen with Social Eatery, the rice was cooked much more poorly here, which is obviously a shame for a place specializing in clay pot rice. It seems like the rice had too much water added, so it was a bit overcooked - you couldn't feel the "single grain" mouthfeel texture you should expect from well-cooked, high quality rice. Since the rice was too mushy, it obviously didn't crisp well either. Though it had some small amount of bits stuck to the edges of the metal (not clay!) pot, it was definitely not the super crispy, well browned "faan ziu" I expect, and not at all like the pictures featured in some earlier reviews of this restaurant.

Some restaurants are all hype, but Curry Hyuga earns every bit of the praise it receives. The katsu is consistently excellent. Whether you order the chicken or the pork, the breading is always perfectly crisp while the meat stays incredibly juicy and tender. That level of consistency is something I really appreciate because every visit has been just as good as the last. The curry is what keeps me coming back. It is rich, comforting, and packed with layers of flavor. Every bite has a depth and complexity that makes it stand out from your typical Japanese curry. It is the kind of meal that leaves you thinking about it long after you have finished. One thing I also really enjoy is the atmosphere. The restaurant strikes a great balance between being lively and comfortable. There is enough energy in the room that it feels welcoming and full of life, but it is still quiet enough to have an easy conversation without having to raise your voice. I often find myself stopping in for a solo meal when I am in the area, and it is the perfect place to enjoy a peaceful lunch or dinner by myself.
