I ordered the spider roll. It tasted good however I was shocked when I realized it was only 4 pieces of sushi for $19. I should have listen to the reviews of this place being over priced. If you are hungry I don't recommend coming here unless you have a lot of $$ to spend. Only come here if you already ate a meal elsewhere and you are just looking to sample sushi for high price .

The sushi was amazing and very fresh. The service was very good and she was really top-notch! Everything came fast and the people were friendly. I really enjoyed it and will definitely come back again.

Small independently owned business. Inside has a traditional style of Japanese design. They ship in some of their fish from Japan. Top notch quality! Everything was fresh and delicious. We tried the artichoke tempura this was amazing! Tried some sushi, a rainbow roll and hamachi collar. You have to call to make reservations. Definitely going back!

One of the best sushi restaurants in the BA. Various price points with the highest quality fish ever experienced. Sushi Restaurants need high volume to keep the prices down. The distinguishing factor is the quality of the fish and the lower price points because of the volume. Can compose a menu from $50-$100/person to higher depending on what you order. Split a $165 sushi combo for 2 people. They can convert this into a chirashi for 2. Jidori TATSUTA AGE, batter not thick like a kaarage. Not panko. maybe potato starch like popcorn chicken. Maybe the finely ground PS not the chunky type they use for popcorn chicken. Better exceptionally thin. Excellent technique. Maybe fried at too low a temp. Little oily. Sushi combo $165.00 a regular menu item. Not online. Chef picks what is fresh. That was the best blue mackerel I have ever had. Usually oily and hard to do right. No oily sensation at all. Deeper fresh flavor lingering in the mouth for longer because of the oil. Best I have had in US. 2 types of toro, can see the different fat content, pinkish vs more white than pink. Melt in mouth, no chewing necessary. When the high content fatty tuna hits mouth, the heat melts the fish. None of the standard hamachi, sake, unagi, cuts. Hiramasa may have been farmed, asking for more sustainable cuts the next time; maybe those contain less heavy metal toxins than the wild versions from the longer lived species. 2 types of tea, a green tea before and during sushi and the brown tea for after. Very subtle. Added hot sake and asahi draft. The hot sake is served in a bigger carafe than the standard narrow 16oz or smaller container. Better value. Don't need to order hot sake multiple times during a meal. The $10 add on crab chawan mushi was the best I have ever had. Very tasty complex broth with deep flavors. Impossible to replicate at home. Not just dashi with seaweed, dried shiitake broth, bonito flakes. Very savory. Texture of cold crab vs warm egg and broth was stunning on first couple bites. Steamed egg very different than chinese version of steamed egg. Small pieces of shrimp/crab/mushroom for texture contrast vs. soft melt in mouth egg custard texture. The rolls other restaurants use with lower quality fish and less technical technique aren't popular here. Can order them as some do. Is possible to find lower cost sushi and with their technique don't need to fill up on cheaper rolls. The low star reviews talking about beef asparagus rolls or iced tea aren't accurate. Not a popular item. The whiteboard specials and menu items have remained unchanged for decades. The long lasting items have specific techniques to perfect the texture and presentation which aren't replicated at other restaurants, regardless of price. The sushi roll restaurants are the same price. They aren't any cheaper.

Food was great the service was awesome. I felt the sushi was a bit too big but overall perfect. Nice ambience to go for fresh sashimi.

Sakae is my one of my favorite restaurant in burlingame. Whenever I want some authentic Japanese food in this area, I will go there. The food is always tasty and fresh. My favorite dish is always the sashimi deluxe. The restaurant is conveniently located in downtown burlingame. The decor is in a very casual setting. The service was also good. Whenever I go, it's never too busy. I give it 4 stars only because of the price. I went there this time for lunch, and the sashimi lunch plate alone with over $42 alone with tax and tip. I would go back again though in the near future.

Loved the ambience, we ordered dragon roll and salmon fire. Both were really good. Took some time to get it which means its fresh. Service was excellent

we ordered quite some time. The food comes out quite slow but the fish was fresh. The flavor was decent, nothing too special but it was good. It is basically in downtown Burlingame so it is very convenient. Prices are okay-expensive. Ambience was nice, very big place

This little restaurant was in this random complex in Burlingame and was very hard to find. But sitting down I was greeted by this wonderful Chirashi bowl. I had a multitude of different fish. The crab head was VERY tough and hurt to eat due to the prickliness of the skin. You can't fault Sakae for that but has to be included. The rest of the sashimi tasted very fresh, and I especially liked the assortment of each fish. I loved how all of the fish melted in my mouth. Its a bit over my price range, but I would consider coming back if it was a bit easier to find!

Simply wonderful fresh fish in an intimate, but comfortable space. This is not a creative roll or fake krab and mayo kind of place. There are two ways to do Sakae the right way. For dinner, sit at the bar and let the chef dazzle and surprise you with whatever is fresh on the whiteboard. It is unique and special, but not inexpensive. However, the weekday lunch specials ( which I rarely get to indulge in due to my work schedule) featuring sushi, sashimi and chiarasi are a great way to get more bang for your buck. Today my son and I were able to walk in. I got the Sushi and sashimi ( Tokyo combo) and my son got the Sashimi combination. These were similar, except his came with a bowl of rice. We were both so pleased with our meal- healthy and lots of high quality, delicious protein. Both meals were approximately $32 which for the quality and quantity of fish was so reasonable. If you are hungry and like more variety, I think the Sushi and Sashimi lunch is the way to go Service was attentive enougb and we were in and out pretty quickly. Sitting at the bar and slowly ordering piece by piece is still my favorite way to go, but the price tag is more precious. Regardless, if you love fresh, raw unadorned fish, this is THE only sushi restaurant in Burlingame.

My dad wanted Japanese food to celebrate his birthday. We typically go to restaurants in San Mateo but decided to try this place out. Most of us in our party had the Kyoto which is their Tempura and Sashimi combination lunch. The tempura was delicately fried, not greasy at all. The sashimi was fresh and tasty. It came with a small salad and miso soup. I generally don't drink miso soup because they tend to just have broth. This one had tons of wakame (seaweed) and small chunks of tofu so I was pleasantly surprised. We also shared half dozen oysters which we shared and thoroughly enjoyed. Service was fast and efficient. My dad really enjoyed his birthday lunch. It was a great meal and we will be back to try their other menu options.

This place is the real deal when it comes to authentic sushi. Great service and attentive staff. The place is smallish and a little to the side from the Burlingame Ave crowd. The variety in Toro and Uni was what brought me there and they did not disappoint. Good for a quiet night or with a small group.

    Jocelyn R.

They offer great in dining and to go options. I always enjoy coming in for lunch and having the chef pick out a few pieces for me. The fish is great quality and fresh. I think the office gets sushi from here at least once a week. I understand they have a new owner but everything has remained the same in regards to the quality and taste.

We went around 5 PM on a Tuesday, and it was nice and quiet, so we were seated right away. We started with the teppanji and then ordered the katsu curry and karaage curry. The curry was rich, flavorful, and honestly reminded us of our trip to Japan. Portions were generous, and I liked that you can customize with extra meat, veggies, or even add an egg. The real standout, though, was the teppanji chicken--it was so good that we'd come back just for that alone. Overall, great food, good service, and a clean space. Definitely a spot we'll be returning to!

Japanese Curry, a sweet and mild curry, is very different from Indian and Chinese/Thai curry. Usually served w/crispy Tonkatsu and a cabbage salad, it can be hard to find. Finding good Japanese curry can be just as difficult. CHB satisfies on the Japanese curry savoriness front. While it's nothing fancy (that extends to their decor), it is housemade and delicious. Waitstaff was brisk and courteous. Was advised to not order more than what I had...he was right. Had leftovers to take home! Ordered the signature ORIGINAL KATSU CURRY w/pork. Other option is chicken. Steamed rice in a Japanese eatery is always top notch, always perfect and generous in portion here. The Tonkatsu was crispy but a tad short of tender, but tasty enough to dip in the accompanying Japanese curry sauce. I might ask for the curry sauce on the side next time. Cabbage salad, traditionally a huge portion was a small offering cushioning the Tonkatsu. Accompanied by a small scoop of house made potato salad and pickled veggies. The hot Tonkatsu, steamed rice and Japanese curry sauce was a great combo for me, a very filling and satisfying meal! CH offers a tabletop varied selection of chili peppers: Pequin, Wiri Wiri, Ichimi, Jalapẽno, Orange Habanero. I did a light sprinkling of the traditional Japanese Ichimi pepper to add a touch of heat and that was fine. Signature ORIGINAL KATSU CURRY was a great start to this menu tasting. I'll be back to try their DOUBLE MENCHI CURRY, KARAAGE CURRY, ASSORTED VEGGIE CURRY, KATSU CURRY UDON. CURRY HYUGA BURLINGAME is also one of the few places that has Omurice on its menu. A Japanese omelet w/rice or noodles inside. Their version is HAYASHI OM-RICE. I will definitely be back to try this! See you there!

Buri buri is unique to most restaurants and sushi spots in the Bay Area because of how they serve their sushi boxes. This is a grab-and-go place where you can get any pre-prepared bowls and sides, but you can also customize a box of your choice of nigiri, sushi rolls, yuba, and more. You just need to line up, and the workers there will go down the line and stock up your box for you with your selection. The inside is nice and inviting, but they do not have any seating inside, and when I went, there were only 2 tables outside. With the small selection I made (5 pieces) it came out to $14 which was not bad at all! I would say when it comes to quality, do not expect a Michelin star-level bites where the fish melts in your mouth, but expect a meal that satisfies a craving. The worker there recommended the torched salmon nigiri and the salmon yubu and I did end up really liking it. I would definitely come back again to try their other items.

This is actually a Japanese kaiseki style restaurant. Reservations are highly recommended as they do not take Walk-ins. There's two seatings for this restaurant so arrive promptly as they serve everyone at the same time . We started with the amuse bouche which was the kobachi three way. The three ways they served this was very unique. It was prepared with one steamed, one in soup and one fried. All were delicious! Next was the sashimi and it was also served with three different fishes. They did serve it with crostinis which was really good with the olive oil. We got the simmered yellowtail collar and the Toro skewers next. The yellowtail collar did have a lot of bones so I won't recommend this for older folks. It was very tender but a little on a salty side. I did like how it came out eggplants. The Toro skewers were also very tender but that wasn't my main dish. My friend enjoyed it very much. The dungeness crab chawanmushi was by far my favorite. It has a streamed egg and crab meat. They didn't skimp out on this dish it had a lot of crab in it. My next favorite dish was the kaki-age donburi which was a scallop and shrimp tempura. It was dust with a green tea sea salt I think. I wasn't able to eat it with the soup and I definitely wasn't able to eat it with the rice. By this dish I was already full. We also had the soju flight which was originally three flights but we added a fourth one . We got the yuzu. Lemon, strawberry and grapefruit orange. They were all good but the yuzu is the main winner! Since it was my bday , they turned off all the hours of the restaurant and everyone sang happy birthday to me. It was a little embarrassing but it added a little special touch. This was one of the best experience I've ever had at a Japanese kaiseki restaurants. The servers were so attentive. The food was creative and you can tell they spent a lot of time perfecting everything. They do change the menu every season so I'm excited to try their next menu when I come back.

Fast forward, it's Mom's Day, kids having meals on their own as parents, our celebration is to go somewhere good to have a meal, no lines (didn't make a res), kinda spontaneous. Hanabi fits the bill. Ordered the pork belly ramen ( looked really good at a neighboring table) and the Mayu-ramen, spicy, with kfc chicken (not what you think, means something else), both with a miso base. Wait was reasonable, time to get a table was 30 seconds tops. Other nights it's been jammed but not Mom's Day, just quiet, enjoyable. Both meals were spectacularly reasonable, serving what you'd want, with enough of everything to want to dive in because you were pretty assured you were going to be satisfied. Not fru-fru or bougie, ingredients that make the dish memorable yet feel you are knowledgeable and appreciated. Pork belly was soft, fatty yet lean, cooked well enough to be tender, yet with a little chew (not disintegrating like some bellies), lots of noodles al dente so you appreciate the noodle was not a mushy mass in the bowl like some places. The Mayu came with 3 drumsticks burning hot from the fryer but oh so good because it's served in a separate dish so it doesn't get soggy. The spicy is good enough to keep things interesting with losing its identity (unlike a lot of places). And they give plenty of ramen because it's that good. We keep coming back because they serve no-frills, you-can-bank-on-it ramen that is satisfying, consistent; staff is friendly without being overbearing. It's not a big place, tables and a counter, but they know how to keep diners happy and coming back for more. What more can you ask for? Thanks, Hanabi, will definitely be back!

The miso here is like no other I have had anywhere else, deeply rich and flavorful. Very family friendly as well, with mini dons available for the little ones.

The restaurant was pretty packed already but the entire time, the staffs were very attentive & friendly, making great recommendations and ensuring our meal and experience were flawless. The sushi was SOOO fresh, beautifully presented, and we especially enjoyed the SASHIMI PLATE, BEEF SUKIYAKI, TARA MISOZUKE, AND ALL THE ROLLS. Highly recommended for anyone looking for quality sushi and great group dining atmosphere!!

STOP DELETING MY REVIEW. Every word here is my own statement, my own experience at this restaurant…read more I went there for lunch on May 7th, this is what happened. This restaurant has been the one of our family's favorite places until what I experienced today. Because we enjoy the food there, we were putting up with the poor service from one of the waitresses. However, what we went through today was so terrible that I couldn't help but decide to put it into writing. I met up with a friend and came here for lunch. We placed our orders, our food arrived, and we started enjoying it. The waitress's constant hovering around us had started to get on our nerves. She kept clearing things from the table; when she even took our unfinished food without asking, we asked her to bring it back. She reluctantly brought it back and walked away. When we called her back to order drinks this time, she reacted harshly, saying the kitchen was already closed, turned her back, and tried to leave; but when we mentioned drinks, she came back with an unhappy expression and reluctantly took our order. We were really bummed out. We hurriedly finished our meal while sipping our drinks. Suddenly, she snapped at us and grumbled that we had to leave. While we couldn't believe what we were hearing, she was kicking us out. As we paid the bill, she pointed to the camera on the wall and explained how the shop owner had watched her through that camera, ordered her to usher the customer out in time, lock the door, and clear the shop. On previous visits, the same waitress kept urging us to eat quickly and leave even though there was still plenty of time before closing. For that reason, I absolutely refuse to accept her attempt to use closing time as an excuse to cover up her terrible service. Besides, if what she say is true, I won't set foot in a business run by an owner who treats his/her staff with a Gestapo mentality. We were already upset, and she was still going on and on, grinning smugly. My friend couldn't take it anymore and said exactly this: "We are regulars here. You've made it hard for us to enjoy our food. We came here willingly, paid our money, and you kicked us out--that's not funny at all, and yet you're grinning as if nothing happened. This is unacceptable." I added, "I'll never come back" and we left. She closed the door on time. I've run my own restaurant for years and dealt with some tough customers, but I've never treated anyone like that. And I won't tolerate anyone else doing it either. No matter how delicious the food is, it all comes down to how you're treated, welcomed and served. I'm sorry, and I felt the need to share this.
