Food: 3.5-4.0 | Service: 4.95 | Ambiance: 3.75 CURRY HYUGA BURLINGAME was a long time in waiting to try. Japanese Curry, a sweet and mild curry, is very different from Indian and Chinese/Thai curry. Usually served w/crispy Tonkatsu and a cabbage salad, it can be hard to find. Finding good Japanese curry can be just as difficult. CHB satisfies on the Japanese curry savoriness front. While it's nothing fancy (that extends to their decor), it is housemade and delicious. Waitstaff was brisk and courteous. Was advised to not order more than what I had...he was right. Had leftovers to take home! Ordered the signature ORIGINAL KATSU CURRY w/pork. Other option is chicken. Steamed rice in a Japanese eatery is always top notch, always perfect and generous in portion here. The Tonkatsu was crispy but a tad short of tender, but tasty enough to dip in the accompanying Japanese curry sauce. I might ask for the curry sauce on the side next time. Cabbage salad, traditionally a huge portion was a small offering cushioning the Tonkatsu. Accompanied by a small scoop of house made potato salad and pickled veggies. The hot Tonkatsu, steamed rice and Japanese curry sauce was a great combo for me, a very filling and satisfying meal! CH offers a tabletop varied selection of chili peppers: Pequin, Wiri Wiri, Ichimi, Jalapẽno, Orange Habanero. I did a light sprinkling of the traditional Japanese Ichimi pepper to add a touch of heat and that was fine. Signature ORIGINAL KATSU CURRY was a great start to this menu tasting. I'll be back to try their DOUBLE MENCHI CURRY, KARAAGE CURRY, ASSORTED VEGGIE CURRY, KATSU CURRY UDON. CURRY HYUGA BURLINGAME is also one of the few places that has Omurice on its menu. A Japanese omelet w/rice or noodles inside. Their version is HAYASHI OM-RICE. I will definitely be back to try this! See you there!

    Teppanji - SO GOOD!

My boyfriend and I tried this place on a whim after seeing good reviews, and it definitely did not disappoint! We went around 5 PM on a Tuesday, and it was nice and quiet, so we were seated right away. We started with the teppanji and then ordered the katsu curry and karaage curry. The curry was rich, flavorful, and honestly reminded us of our trip to Japan. Portions were generous, and I liked that you can customize with extra meat, veggies, or even add an egg. The real standout, though, was the teppanji chicken--it was so good that we'd come back just for that alone. Overall, great food, good service, and a clean space. Definitely a spot we'll be returning to!

This place has really good curry and tonkatsu! I got their chicken katsu curry but wish I got the pork, because I think that was juicier (my friend got that one). Anyway, the flavors were great and service is fast!

3.5 stars, rounded up, because prices are pretty reasonable. The milk tea was way too sweet (it's more like condensed milk with a splash of assam). The breading on katsu seem more dense than I remember. This was my go to curry place but I think they're more similar to other curry places around the area these days. Friendly service and very responsive to the service button on each table. Comfortable booth seating. I got the oyster katsu curry, a winter special item. It hit the spot. I do feel like I could get similar fried oysters elsewhere though. I'm sure I'll come back but expectations will be tempered.

I am so happy to have found this place on Yelp! We were craving something along the lines of Coco Ichibanya from Tokyo and found Curry Hyuga. What they don't do is the vegetables like potato and carrots but they make up for it with the chicken cutlet and tasty curry sauce. We asked for the chicken katsu curry with extra pickles and a side of potato croquette. It was so frickin good and the service was so friendly! We've gone back two times now in the last week. The wait wasn't too bad and it's a decent space inside. The interior is nicely lit and gives off a very Asian feel. The area it's located in as nice but be aware the parking situation sucks on weekends. We will absolutely be coming back!

Awesome bang for the buck!!! Very good Japanese curry spot. Delicious tender pork tonkatsu with killer curry sauce. Little spot in a strip mall. Great friendly service.

This is my favorite Japanese curry restaurant in the entire bay area. The meat is so-so but the curry is amazing. It has the right amount of contrast with the meat and white rice. Too bad some of it spilled all over the plastic bag while I was transporting it. The food came out quick at around 4:30pm on a Sunday. Pork curry $17, karaage chicken appetizer $8.50 and potato salad $5.50 goes well together. Good job my friends at Curry Hyuga.

Really loved this spot! First, the portion sizes alone make it such a great value. You get so much food for the price. I ordered the signature curry with a hard-boiled egg, and everything about it was so good. The rice was cooked perfectly, the curry was rich and flavorful, and the katsu was super crispy. We also ordered the chicken karaage, and it was just as good. The portion size was also huge for an appetizer, and every piece was juicy and well-seasoned. The location is convenient, the service was friendly and efficient, and everything moved quickly. We were seated immediately, someone took our order immediately after sitting and the food arrived just as quickly. Would definitely recommend!

Super tasty! I found this place on a whim and I'm so glad I stopped by. I had just visited Japan a few days prior and was craving Japanese curry. This place definitely hit the spot! Service is fast, friendly, and no frills. Ambiance is definitely more casual and loud. They have a decent amount of seats, so it's good for both small and larger groups.

I've been to Curry Hyuga in Burlingame about 4-5 times now, and every single visit has lived up to a 5-star experience. It's one of those spots that's just consistently dialed in, food, service, and overall vibe never miss! The ambiance is warm and casual with a cozy Japanese diner feel. Nothing overly fancy, but clean, comfortable, and perfect whether you're grabbing a quick meal or sitting down and taking your time. It always feels welcoming :D !! Signature Katsu Curry (with egg) This is my go-to every time. The curry is rich, savory, and has that deep slow-cooked flavor that just coats everything perfectly. Not too heavy, not too sweet--just balanced. The katsu itself is crispy on the outside and super juicy on the inside. The breading holds up even with the curry, which I appreciate because nothing's worse than soggy katsu. Adding the egg takes it up another level. Once you break it and mix it into the curry and rice, it makes everything creamier and even more indulgent. Rice & Sides The rice is always cooked perfectly and soaks up the curry really well. The pickles and potato salad on the side are small touches but add a nice contrast to the richness of the dish. What keeps me coming back is the consistency. It tastes just as good every single time, which is honestly rare. Service is always smooth, food comes out quickly, and the whole experience feels effortless, the elder couple who helps serves everyone always has smiles on their faces! Definitely one of my go-to comfort food spots in the area. If you're craving katsu curry, this is the place

Curry Hyuga has been on our must try list for a long time (years) and a chilly night in the Peninsula was a perfect opportunity for something cozy and filling! They are located on Broadway in Burlingame in the heart of a ton of local shopping and dining; there is a good amount of metered street parking but it's often busy. If you go a block or two away from Broadway, there are a few lots (also metered) and some free street parking-just be mindful of people's driveways. Curry Hyuga is definitely a cozy spot-there are around 5-6 alcoves with two tables each, and can seat groups of 2 to ~10 in one of these areas. We didn't have to wait long to be seated, but they were decently busy with in-person patrons and takeaway orders on a Monday evening. As usual, the #YEShusband and I had perused the menu and went in with a plan to share and try as many things as possible! I hadn't really had Japanese curry, so I was particularly intrigued by the description of it being more of an umami gravy-like sauce. Here's what we ordered: - Corn Pottage Soup (super rich sweet corn, spice, milk, and chicken consomme): Super creamy and flavorful. This was a reasonable size to share between two people. - Teppanji (sizzling chicken with onion infused namban sauce): WOW! We knew we were in for something delicious after reading the description, but this one exceeded our expectations. This karaage style chicken is served topped with a hot (temperature-wise) green onion oil on top. The flavor is next level! - Signature Katsu Curry (hand breaded pork loin): Iconic dish and Curry Hyuga executes it perfectly. Their curry sauce is savory, just the right balance of saucy and gravy-like consistency, and goes well with everything! I should have ordered an extra side of the curry-rookie mistake! This comes with a half plate of rice, a side of their potato salad and fukujin pickles which provide a cool contrast. - Karaage Curry (Japanese shio-dashi marinated fried chicken with house blended crust): It was nice to try their karaage on its own-the breading is flavorful and not too thick. It's served with a creamy, aioli type sauce which was a nice option to dip the chicken in. This also comes with a half plate of rice, a side of their potato salad and fukujin pickles. - Potato Korokke (side): this is similar to a potato croquette: a mashed potato ball mixed with corn and onion, coated in panko, and fried. It was so yummy and had a great flavor. Great side to dip in extra curry sauce! I highly recommend coming to Curry Hyuga for a hearty, homestyle meal that is also reasonably priced! Huge thank you to the Curry Hyuga team for a tasty first visit- can't wait to come back for more! IG: @waitingtoeat

They have a few new items on the menu. We tried the cheese noodles and it was good! Perfect place when the weather is a little chilly out. Recently came for a Friday lunch and it was tough to find parking nearby. We ended up parking a few blocks down in the residential area which actually isn't that far and it was easier to get out than if we parking on Broadway. Service was prompt and friendly. Food was yum!

Food 4/5: we ordered the pork katsu rice bento with mini creamy ramen and the Yu Ling chi chicken bento with the spicy miso mini ramen. Everything tasted fresh and hot. We particularly liked the pork katsu, it was perfectly crispy, juicy and well seasoned with the katsu sauce. The ramen didn't have much topping (just scallion and Naruto) but the soup and noodles texture were great. I was looking forward to the Yu Lin chi chicken but was not a big fan of the sauce flavor, it was salty and slightly one note. Rice was well cooked in the bento but I could do without the edamame, they weren't cooked long enough so it was hard to get out of the shell and bland. Service 3/5: we were seated pretty immediately but had to wait quite awhile before anyone served us, it might be because we were more towards the corner and the restaurant was busy. It was kind of difficult already with my husbands crutches. A wheelchair could be possible if they sit you at the very front entrance. We wanted to go because they have napolitan and we were very happy that we went. The staff were nice. They keep to themselves and check in on you just enough. There's anime on the shelves if you want to read and relax. Love that they had a warning that some of them may not be suitable for kids. They don't split bills, so heads up if you're going with multiple people. Our boys really liked their curry and katsu. They were able to make it not really spicy and it was just right for them. This was one of those places that I always passed and would think to myself "I need to stop there one of these days." Well I finally did and it was quite good. The curry I got would have been the perfect level of spice for my wife, who's fully white, but next time I think I'll go up a level or two. It was still good and full of great flavor, but I expected a bit more from the level of spiciness I got. The young guy that was helping me was very nice and attentive. There was this person visiting someone who worked there, I think she was a nurse who worked nearby, who was chatting with her friend (the other server) at such a volume I wonder if the nurse lady knew that inside voices were even an option. That was a little distracting but I don't blame my server for that. I don't care if employees at places want to chat, that's fine. Just be aware of the volume. Overall I'm very glad I went here and the food was delicious.
