I came here with a small group of coworker for Happy Hour but unfortunately they don't start at 4:30pm on Friday so we were given their regular menu. Since I'm always looking for protein, I decided on the Happy Dinner Box $18.99 -- even though this is a pretty basic bento, you do get 3 items and that's a pretty good deal for our current economy. I chose beef teriyaki, chicken katsu and salmon. Box comes with salad, rice and miso soup. Taste was standard. Service was nice. Wait for food was about 20 minutes. I also tried the Dinosaur Roll $17.99 which is spicy scallop, avocado, yellow fish, jalapeño, and black tobiko. Although the roll was small, I appreciated that they didn't use too much rice. There were quite a few patrons dining on a Friday night so if you're looking for a convenient Japanese restaurant, that isn't necessarily authentic but still a good value, with ample nearby parking in the adjacent public lot, you might wanna visit Naked Fish. I've done take out a few times as well as dined in. I've always gotten the bentos and the price is decent for the ability to choose 3 items. For Millbrae, I can't think of many equivalent options like this nearby, so that makes them stand out. Overall I like this restaurant, but have to ding it for questionable quality control. The salad always has questionable bad leaves. In our most recent order, the plastic had a hole burned into the bottom and the sauce was leaking out. How did they miss that? Are they burning plastic on the regular? The noise from upstairs is very unfortunate. The fitness place needs to change their layout so the poor restaurant below is not so negatively affected by dropping weights. read more

What a total bummer that this sushi joint is directly below a 24 Hour Fitness. HEY... I used to be a competitive bodybuilder and powerlifter, so I "get" the noise, but geez, it is annoying! I had their specialty G.E.M. roll - delicious - and my standard philly roll - very good. One thing I noticed on the menu was Chicken Katsu Don... and you KNOW what THAT means... Haven't been here in awhile but thought we'd stop in for a quick lunch. You can't go wrong with the price of the bento box. Just enough to keep you satisfied. I had the chicken katsu, ca roll and tempura. Love the fact that you get an onion ring for the tempura. Hubs had the beef teriyaki, some kind of fish that wasn't salmon and tempura. For $15.99 you can't go wrong. Place was a bit empty and the waitstaff was not fawning but decent to get more tea and take bento boxes away when done. I have been going here for years, back when they first opened. The decor is simple and has plenty of TVs to watch sports etc. Service is always fast and prompt. The lady was always checking on us to see if we needed anything else, etc. I'm sure they are under new ownership because I've seen a few new additional food items, and I'm not complaining. This is part of the reason why I came back again so soon. We ordered: 1. Calamari- this is a must order every time we go here. Lightly fried with onions and jalapeños. 2. Gyozo - I always crave this and it always hits the spot 3. Beef short rib - perfect portion and perfect balance of meat and fattiness which I love. 4. Age dashi tofu - pieces were a little bigger than what I'm use to but perfect balance of crunch and firmness. 5. Crunchy giants - this is a tasty one. To be honest I've tried a bunch of the signature rolls especially when I'd go here and they have happy hour specials 6. Honey moon roll- if you like honey walnut prawns this is for you 7. Bento box - huge portions for the price. We typically get anything they have they are all good. 8. Yaki udon - This is new. The noodles tasted so fresh, chewy, and bouncy. Naked Fish has been around in Millbrae since I was in middle school and now I'm almost in my 30's. Despite all that time past and seeing that this place is under new ownership, it is still the same below average Japanese restaurant that I remember unfortunately. The service is okay and the red interior is still the same and honestly I don't mind it as much as other reviewers say. I think it's comfortable and unique. What isn't comfortable is that is right below a 24 hour fitness. So you know what that means. Constant banging on the roof from people dropping weights and sweating their butts off upstairs while you are trying to enjoy a quiet meal. The noise from the 24 hour fitness you hear when you are at Naked Fish is loud. Like REALLY LOUD. I ordered the Lunch Bento Box with Salmon and Beef Teriyaki and California Roll ($15.99) when I last went. Definitely on par price wise with other bento boxes nowadays. Expensive, but if the quality and portions are good then it's worth it. Unfortunately this bento was not worth it. Beef teriyaki is actually cooked pretty well with it being medium rare, but the portions are so small and the teriyaki sauce is overly sweet. The salmon teriyaki looks like it was cut from an infant salmon with how small it is. The California roll is actually decent, but it is hard to mess up a California roll. The salad is just straight up sad. It is nothing but spinach bunched together and doused with an overly sweet and sour salad dressing. You can tell there is zero heart or passion put into this and most bento box salads at least have a variety in greens and cucumbers or carrots, etc. It's just all bad. The only reason this place didn't get a 1 star is because the service is good, but everything else was dissapointing and there definitely needs to be an overhaul in the menu and quality. Having been around Millbrae for decades, for some reason this town really struggles with having good Japanese restauraunt options and Naked Fish is on the list of dissapointing options. read more

It looks like the ownership of the restaurant was changed. I went there occasionally with my family and we always ordered lunch special and mixed tempura dishes with a reasonable price. The quality and portion of foods were pretty decent. Recently, I brought my friends For lunch. Three of us ordered lunch and additional a shrimp Templar dishes. When the foods arrived the presentation was nice with new lunch trays. But the quality of the foods were less with TINY shrimp with lots of flours coding, thin little finger size 5 pieces of teriyaki chicken and a few pieces of salad. The price was the same as before. But the quality and quantity of foods were much less before. I went there frequently with my friends before. But not anymore. read more

A pretty decent sushi restaurant. I came on a date. We ordered 2 sushi rolls, a chefs special (beef tataki), and an alcoholic drink. The drink was pretty good, not too sweet. However, I would have preferred it slightly sweeter. The Beef Tataki, I wasn't a huge fan of. The Mother and Son Roll was decent. The Honeymoon Roll was good, I thoroughly enjoyed that one. I came on a Friday a little past 6, and it wasn't that busy. I had no issues with parking. The restaurant was fairly clean. And the prices were decent. Over service was fine. They didn't card me when I ordered my drink, and I was surprised because I look young for my age and always get carded. They then carded after they made my drink and brought it to the table, which was a goofy move. But no problem, I guess it happens, sometimes services forget to card you and then remember. No biggie. My boyfriend and I were in the mood for sushi. We called prior to driving since Monday was a holiday. They ensured they were opened so we made our way down to the restaurant. When we arrived it was EMPTY. We were not greeted. My boyfriend made eye contact with the sushi chef, he then hid in a corner and squatted so he wouldn't be seen. Another employee was at one of the last tables in the back, back towards the door and seemed to be counting money with the cash bag in hand. We were both flabbergasted and left. Honestly, a blessing in disguise because we came across bashamichi on El Camino which is honestly one of the best places we've been too! I used to come here all the time with my family and we recently came back because we missed eating here. When we walked in we were not greeted by anyone and awkwardly stood there waiting to get acknowledged. We were then acknowledged by the sushi chef (unsure if he was the manager) and he quickly said "10 minutes" and walked away. We were confused because there were plenty of open seats available. Not long after, a chef from the kitchen came up to us and told us to sit wherever we would like. It was clear that they were understaffed. They had one girl so untrained on the floor that she had no idea what I was ordering, and had the 2 cooks in the kitchen serving customers. I have never experienced a place so poorly managed that the chefs have to help serve. I felt extremely bad for the single server running the floor and witnessed some arguments between that sushi chef and her. The food was okay, but portions are laughable now. Every 5 mins I have a diarrhea attack and have been on advil and pepto bismal all day to combat the nausea and cramping symptoms. I threw up again around 12:00, and I could NOT sleep- 12:47 AM I called the advice nurse and I hope to have an appointment to see what's going on. My friend ordered for delivery and the food she received looked and tasted delectable. I decided to walk in today and give it my own shot. The woman who greeted me at the door was very unpleasant. Idk if maybe she was having a bad day. But she was quite rude/aggressive towards me. The food I ordered was simply squished into one box. The pieces were very unbalanced. My California roll had so much crab mixture inside of it that it was squishy and not very good in my opinion. Living in the Bay Area now and getting to know the peoples, we are all no strangers to fresh fish/seafood. Their prices are well below what I would deem the "Bay Standard", and the quantity for the price of food you order is much better than if spending the time, gas, and hassle of sitting down at a hipper spot closer to downtown SF. The quality of the sushi/seafood that I've ordered (thus far), has been well above what I would deem to be typical. Is it amazing? No. Is it fantastic? No. Is it great? YES! Let's be real. Price for food, and quality of preparation is directly proportional. We all know that. But. Have I ever been disappointed with my food order from Naked fish in Millbrae? A resounding, No. Now where I feel this place TRULY shines is their dinners and signature dishes! Chicken Katsu is Devine, and the Unagi fried rice is HEAVENLY!! During COVID, I ordered from Naked Fish without any complaints, and the food was priced reasonably. This review is based on my recent dine-in experience at Naked Fish. There were three total adults, one young toddler, and one newborn. The female waitress quietly greeted us and sat us along the row of tables. Naked Fish has an extended double-sided bench that splits the restaurant into two halves. During this visit, half the restaurant was full with all of the guests seated on the side closest to the register and the kitchen while we were the only ones seated on the other side closest to the sushi bar. I would estimate there were about 5-6 other tables prior to our arrival and only two employees waiting staff. The average wait to order was slightly longer by a couple of minutes, no big deal as they were a bit busy. We ended up ordering sake clams, two bento boxes, 2 signature rolls, and a nigiri. I want to start with the positive. Their food is DELICIOUS! Their beef was cooked to a perfect medium and tender, salmon was juicy, and the raw fish was fresh. I WOULD RATE THE FOOD FIVE-STARS! Now here's the dismal part of their service. Their staff was hard to get a hold of and inattentive. I ended up helping myself to the napkins and utensils than waiting for them. The female waitress was extremely forgetful and forget several of our requests, one of our orders (just a nigiri, NBD), and even the tempura sauce with the bento. I'd rate the service a humble 2-stars. I actually drafted five long paragraphs of the poor service, but because the food was so delicious and I want this place to thrive, I kept this part short and also gave a generous four-star overall rating. I think this place gets a 3.5 stars from me, but I'll round it up since I had a pretty good experience here. I was craving sushi after the gym one day so I decided to check this place out. The rolls were decent and the price was great for the quality of the meal. Their special roles are all between ~$10-13 for the most part which I thought was great. I'm not too picky about sushi as long as the quality of the fish isn't completely terrible, and I thought this restaurant passed that criteria. Both rolls I ordered were great, and the cherry blossom roll was actually pretty spicy! The spicy scallop maki I got was pretty good as well and they didn't skimp out on the fish. Also ordered sides of miso soup and they came out piping hot and it tasted really good. It's no bougie sushi restaurant, but I think it's a great place for a fairly cheap sushi meal when you don't want to splurge on expensive sushi, with decent quality fish. The rolls taste great. We ordered dragon rolls and caterpillar rolls for the table. Caterpillar rolls are delicious with a crispy shrimp. I ordered eel over rice. Eel is tasty, fatty but a little bit too salty. The rice is warm but not hot. The service is ok.
