Appetizer combo sashimi and Honey Roll
Angilene I.

We loved our experience here! Went to dinner around 6 and was able to sit right away. Constant work is being done throughout this restaurant, it's great. We ordered the #2 boat which had teriyaki chicken, California roll, tempura, and teriyaki salmon. We also got an appetizer sashimi combo and the Honey Roll. Both SO good!

Had an early dinner at 5. Shared the boat dinner and dragon sushi. Everything was so delicious since I only had a banana for lunch. Fuji Sukiyaki never goes wrong! One of the best!

Really good sushi, bento box, service is good, nice bright open space. We will come back again.

San Mateo has a big selection of Japanese restaurants, but we chose this place because it has sukiyaki on its menu. This place wasn't crowded around Saturday lunch time, and there were many tables open for indoor dining (they didn't have outdoor tables). There were tatami rooms in the back of the restaurant, but the sign said that you have to have a group of 4+ people paying $25+ each in order to experience the tatami room. We came here for the beef sukiyaki and that was the first thing that we got. The broth was slightly sweet from cabbage and mushrooms, and there were vermicelli noodles and slices of thinly sliced beef in the soup. The sukiyaki came with a bowl of rice, and you can sort of make a congee with the soup over rice. I'm a huge fan of soup, and so I really liked the sukiyaki. We also got an Osaka roll on the side. This had a mix of 4 different sashimi and slices of avocado. There was a bit of sauce drizzled over the roll which does not overwhelm the taste of the fish and avocado. This is definitely a good choice if you want more fish for your buck.

Came in on a chilly evening fully intending to warm up with sukiyaki ... then saw the whiteboard and never looked back. Food: We went hard on the daily fish board: Japanese tai, kampachi, Hokkaido scallop, aji, king salmon, blue shrimp, lobster, zuke, uni, plus a few comfort items for the kids. The toro/uni/caviar nigiri was the showstopper, although it's so buttery and decadent that just one piece per person was about right. The seared salmon belly disappeared instantly at our table; lightly torched, melty, and very easy to keep eating "just one more" of. Kampachi and Hokkaido scallop came as generous nigiri, and the Japanese tai with a little roe on top worked nicely as a lighter counterpoint between richer items. Blue shrimp was fun: sweet raw bodies with roe over rice, and the heads fried into salty little snacks. Lobster had sauce with a hint of heat and toasted almonds. For the "regular" side of the meal, king salmon nigiri with a touch of ikura was great, and the salmon sashimi and simple salmon rolls kept the kids happy. Tempura hand rolls, loaded with shrimp and avocado, was a good filler. Overall, it's a neighborhood spot that lets you build yourself a mini omakase, but is still totally family friendly. Service: We sat in the main dining room next to the sushi bar, ordered most everything at once, and they paced it impressively well. First plates landed within minutes, and then dishes kept arriving in a steady rhythm. Our server paid attention to how we were ordering: some things clearly meant for one person, others meant to share, and the plating reflected that without us having to explain. Empty plates disappeared quickly, water and tea stayed topped off, and the chef (possibly also the manager or owner) kept an eye on the flow from behind the counter. Attentive, efficient, never intrusive. Ambiance: The room is compact and fairly busy, especially with a steady stream of DoorDash/Uber Eats drivers cycling through for pick-ups. It was somewhat entertaining and really showed how dialed-in their operation is. There are tatami rooms off to the side, but since we were doing all sushi, having a direct line of sight to the bar fit the mood. Casual, lively, with a "local favorite" vibe. Value: Our tab landed around $500 pre-tip for a table (3 adults, 2 kids) that went heavy on board-only fish - on the higher end of a local Japanese restaurant. That said, portions for the premium items were sizable, the fish quality kept up its end of the bargain, and the service team fully earned the (admittedly ambitious) suggested tip tiers. Overall: Solid 4 stars. We'd happily come back, especially with a craving for king salmon, seared salmon belly, blue shrimp, and that toro/uni/caviar combo. Next time, we'll try not to get completely hypnotized by the board so we can finally see how their namesake sukiyaki stacks up.

Bento heaven! My family is more bento box people than sushi people, so I'm always on the lookout for good bento prices/deals. This place is good! We got a three item bento box and my family was very happy about the portions and flavors. "Not too salty or dry." The space is not that small and has another section with more tables. Their sushi is good, just good.

Another treasure in San Mateo downtown. Overall, this place is definitely worth coming back to. If you love Japanese food, put this on your list ASAP.

Chicken Kara Age
Brandi H.

Came here for Friday night dinner and got seated quickly. The restaurant did fill up later into the night. There is a main dining area with tables and bar seating and a slightly more private hallway area with booths. Chicken Karaage (3.5/5): The fry on this wasn't like the typical karaage I am used to. It felt a bit oily and heavy on the batter. The chicken itself was good. Pink Lady Roll (5/5): This roll had hamachi, salmon, tuna, avocado, oshinko and masago. It was very fresh. Rice to fish ratio was good. Interesting that it was wrapped in soy paper. Dragon Roll (4/5): This roll had shrimp tempura, imitation crab, avocado, topped with eel. This was good but there was barely an eel on it. This is a good sushi spot. Nice and chill place to grab lunch or dinner. It is close by the train and just a street away from the downtown area.

Recently visited Fuji Sukiyaki for dinner and had an amazing experience! The restaurant has a cozy, authentic vibe and I loved the mix of trad and modern seating. I ordered a variety of dishes to try: - Seared Sake Toro Nigiri: This was a standout! The toro was buttery and had a nice sear and smokey flavor. - Ikura and Masago: Both were very fresh and had a nice pop. - Uni Nigiri: very creamy and sweet - 18-Piece Sashimi Combo: really beautifully presented and super fresh. Pieces were thick especially the salmon and tuna. Great price for 18 pieces. - Pink Lady Roll: roll was a balanced mix of hamachi, salmon, tuna, avocado, and masago. The soy paper wrap was a nice light touch I'll definitely be back to try more dishes, especially the sukiyaki and their specialty rolls. Definitely recommend! Pro Tip: ask about their tatami rooms for a more private experience.

Serena L.

Hokkaido roll - 4.5/5, got this just for the scallops haha. Delicious with a slight spice. Pink lady roll - 4/5, packed with lots of fish and daikon for some crunch. Tempura - 4/5, beautifully fried and super crispy!

Yosemite Roll and tempura. (Leftovers). YUMMY!

Fuji Sukiyaki has been around in San Mateo for as long as I can remember, nestled along one of the busier streets in town. At first glance, it appears to be your ordinary sushi restaurant. Inside, it's a cozy, welcoming spot with ample seating for parties of all sizes, whether you're dining solo or coming in with a group. We stopped by around 6:30 PM and, despite how packed it looked, we were seated surprisingly quickly--a great start to the evening. The service was attentive and efficient, and the food was even better. We went all in with our sushi order, including the Dynamite Roll, Dragon Roll, Spider Roll, Titanic Roll, Yosemite Roll, and Okinawa Roll, along with the 101 Hand Roll and a side of tempura. Every plate was beautifully presented and incredibly flavorful. Each roll had its own personality, and none of them disappointed. No matter what you desire, I'm sure their menu has something to satisfy every craving. (I didn't get the chance to take photos, yet there's plenty to see already provided via other reviews.) The ambiance is simple and familiar, adding to its charm and serves to be the neighborhood favorite. If you're in San Mateo and craving sushi, Fuji Sukiyaki is a must-visit. With a wide selection and a comfortable dining experience, it absolutely deserves a 5-star rating.

Top to bottom: Dragon Roll, sunrise, seared toro, oyster shooters, aloha roll
Marie N.

Hands down one of my favorite sushi spots in this area! I've had it a couple years ago and went back recently to check it out! Still amazing quality of fish and delicious selection. The seared toro is my FAV and the Sunrise is also another must. A bite of either of these and you'll be sent to sushi heaven!!

Dynamite Roll, spicy hamachi roll, and Super Bowl Roll
Kim T.

I absolutely love this sushi place. It's pretty unassuming on the outside, but there's actually a fair amount of seating on the inside. Service is super quick. The prices are reasonable for a sushi place. I usually get the rolls here because they are pretty big! Fish tastes fresh and the portions are great. I haven't tried any of the nigiri or sashimi, but I'll be sure to try it next time.

Do you take reservations for lunch on a Tuesday?

We do take reservations for lunch but we close every Tuesday. Thank You!

Do you offer catering?

Yes they do

Is the price difference if uni between domestic US kind and thwv imported from Japan (I assume Hokkaido) worth it? For those who has had both kinds, can you tell the difference?

Hokkaido Uni is always more expensive than A grade Santa Barbara Uni. I love A grade Santa Barbara Uni more :)

Are they doing takeout during the lockdown?

They will be opened back for takeout on Wednesday April 15th.

Is there an extra charge to use a tatami room?

There is a minimum headcount requirement to use the tatami room. If you don't have enough people, I believe that they charge you.

Do you take reservations?

Yes we do. Thanks

Is it possible to reserve a traditional tatami room?

Yes you can call them to reserve. I think you just need a minimum of 4 people.

Do you serve gluten free?

If you mean sushi, no. https://gluten.org/japanese-cuisine-gluten-free-diet/

Do u do all you can eat?

Their fish is incredibly high quality. Treasure each bite, piece by piece. With that being said, they do not offer AYCE.

Though on the pricier side ($45.99 per person w/o tax + tip), the quality of fish is better than most AYCE sushi spots that I've visited in the Bay Area. My favorite things to order were their Sake (Salmon) Belly Nigiri, Fish Crush (fish on fried shiso topped with salmon), and Robata (skewers), but you can't go wrong with any of the sashimi or roll options! Service was a bit lacking but we did go on a busy Saturday evening. We had to call a waiter or waitress to give us the tablet to order each round, and we ended up making it to 5 rounds within the 90 minutes they give for the AYCE. They also have a rule for ordering where each person can only order one starred item per round - which I found a little strange at first. I did appreciate how the AYCE came with hot sake though! We didn't have a reservation and almost had to wait an hour, but a spot was open where we squished our party of 5 to a 4 person booth (I'd recommend making a resy). The overall decor of the place is nice, while the ambiance was pretty busy but relaxed. It's in a prime location on San Mateo downtown which was also a plus. I think I would definitely come back another time if I'm looking for an AYCE sushi place!

We decided to come here for dinner with my brother and best friend, who was just here for lunch a week before. Their experience was good because the pricing for lunch is $9 less for the same exact menu. They had the full menu, which included the UNI, SCALLOP and that's all we cared for to be honest. We got there during dinner hours and were seated right away, party of 6. The place was nice and modern inside and staff was friendly. System: The way it works is that 2 non-star item and 1 star item per person per round. No problem, or should I say there is a problem. They DID NOT have UNI and SCALLOP available to order. So I'd ask about the ame-ebi and there is an additional charge. Now, these are like the main star items and they're out! So now we are just having oysters and so call Wagyu nigiri. Oysters were not the freshest and the rice fish/beef ratio on the nigiri was OMG, SMH. Well, at least it comes with free soft drinks and sake. I would not recommend coming, especially for dinner at $60 per person after tips and tax. If you are going to come, come for lunch and call first see what they Don't have. Now, their sashimi is pretty fresh but that's about it.

Besides the fried rice, the tuna and salmon sashimi are large, fresh, and high quality. I would give full marks to this restaurant for both its sashimi dishes and main courses. The service is good, the environment is clean, and the dishes are priced normally, perhaps slightly on the higher side, but the value for money is reasonable. The only downside is that parking around this area is quite difficult. Overall, however, I would recommend this place to anyone who enjoys omakase and appreciates high quality Japanese cuisine.

The servers typically come out to the folks closest to the front of the line and hand them menus so they can decide what they want before being seated. When it is not as busy, you can walk in directly and request a table. The shop itself actually has a lot of seating, but there is always an influx of people, so it fills up quickly. The interior gives off a nice modern Japanese chic vibe. :) They also offer outdoor patio seating, which is great if you are trying to enjoy a nice day outside.
