    Copper River Salmon

You bet we came back for that Copper River Salmon and it was everything I remembered. It's so buttery and just melts in your mouth. It's available only in the summer so you should definitely aim to be here around mid- to end of June to try this! Don't forget to book your reservations in advance for it. Walk in seems to be an option but not guaranteed. If you do walk in, I would recommend in the middle of the week but you might have a longer wait. We saw a couple walk in and got in maybe after 30-40 minutes of waiting. Service always amazing. Being there it's so lively.

Food: Outstanding as always. We ordered the bonito, bluefin tuna, Spanish mackerel, long-neck clam, marinated salmon roe, amberjack, baby sardine, aji (horse mackerel), uni, fresh oyster, and of course a draft Asahi served in a perfectly chilled glass. Every item was exceptionally fresh and expertly prepared, showcasing the quality and craftsmanship that have kept us coming back for years. Service: Just as amazing as it was 20 years ago. The same chef, the same servers, and the same commitment to excellence. It's rare to find a restaurant that maintains such consistency and dedication over two decades. Ambience: Lively, welcoming, and full of appreciation for both the food and the customers. The atmosphere remains warm and friendly, making every visit feel special. After 20 years, this place continues to deliver an unforgettable dining experience.

This might be my favorite sushi spot in the entire Bay, hands down. The service is amazing and I loved everything I was served here. I went here with my friend for her birthday and the crab meat, salmon belly, and sweet shrimp nigiri were all fantastic. Be prepared to open your wallet though, this place is not cheap! The sushi chefs and servers all have a sense of humor and are really kind. The raw oysters are so delicious, and the chicken karaage is crispy and plentiful. I enjoyed everything I was served here. It's easy to drive past this location since it's on a side road and off the strip of trendy downtown restaurants, but don't let that fool you.

So excited to finally try Sushi Edomata. It had been too long since going to Sushi Sam's. The sashimi was buttery and delicious. The rolls were all yummy. Just wish there was a little more offering but the quality is always better than quantity. The staff is very friendly and quick to refill drinks. It's pretty small and you must have a reservation to eat there.

I heard a lot of positive things about Sushi Edomata (formerly Sushi Sam's) so I was excited when we planned on having it for dinner. My group and I ended up going with the omakase experience. Since we were seated at a table, everything came out in 5s one-by-one which was nice and convenient. The fish quality here was great and the rice-to-fish ratio was perfect too. My favorite fish were the tuna and uni! Overall, the omakase here is great if you want high-quality fish without a super expensive price point. The omakase experience also comes with a dessert - I got the matcha panna cotta and it was a nice way to end the meal. Pro tip: make sure you reserve a seat ahead of time if you plan on coming for dinner. It gets BUSY! We came in for a Wednesday dinner (at opening) and the line was out the door by the time we left.

Located in an unassuming location, I was surprised to see how crowded it was on a Thursday evening. It seems that there are many regulars that come. Make sure to make reservations ahead of time as we saw a few people be turned away. Sushi Edomata fits in for those who want a slightly higher quality sushi experience ($100/pp), but not Michelin */Omakase ($200-300/pp). The sushi was solid, but aside from the sweet shrimp (love the fried head), amberjack and hot ate, some of the pieces fell flat or were unmemorable. Part of going to a sushi experience for me is the ambiance and the interactions with the sushi chef, and unfortunately, I felt Sushi Edomata fell short on this front. The 4 sushi chefs were so busy that they never interacted with us. They were also so busy that they were putting pieces of sushi before I even finished a piece. I hate feeling rushed eating sushi especially when the prices are $10 per piece. I love savoring each piece and I felt like I couldn't do that here. I actually think I would try prefer sitting at a table rather than the counter at this restaurant so I can eat my sushi in piece. Service was also lacking as not one staff came by to check on us or refill our waters unless we flagged someone down. Also, when asking for sushi recommendations, our waitress only stated the most expensive pieces. Unfortunately, because of the experience with the service, I don't think I'll be one of the regulars. For those looking for a quick pace popular sushi spot, this is your restaurant.

Did not know this place existed, but it's probably one of the most fresh sushi I've had in the Bay Area that isn't just an Omakase. Crazy good nigiri pieces with super fresh fish - lots of melt in your mouth slices that don't taste frozen or fishy I'd love to return! Recommend making a reservation ahead though - super busy even on a Tuesday

I was a big fan of Sushi Sam's back in the day and was delighted when a good friend invited me to come to Sushi Edomata to have dinner. When you enter it is a bright space and like the old place it is cheery and a party - lots of Happy Birthday yells - and the waiters speak Cantonese like the old place! My friend booked a table online and we were seated within 10 minutes of our time. The service is exceptional. Our waiter was super friendly, gave us excellent recommendations, order to eat the sushi in, and paid attention to every detail. As for the sushi - top notch. The bluefin was the reddest boldest one I've ever had. The black cod is transcendent. The kiwi on top and the sauce pairs perfectly. Rosy seabass very good. Even standard salmon is very good. Generous with their cuts, much more fish than rice. Oh and the eel. Not your standard super sweetened unagi, this has much more subtle and nice flavour. Almond tofu is soo smooth. You won't regret coming here.

Very relieved that the OG Sushi Sam Edomata didn't really close and instead just reincarnated with a slightly different name with a lot of the fun friendly original staff and service, and delicious menu offering. They retained some of my favorites, the omakase (still includes dessert!), and the Sam Special hand roll. They brought in a Japanese chef to handle the relatively revamped appetizer menu. Tempura corn - worth a try for corn lovers, comes shaved in flats off the cob, so it's easy to eat and lightly salted to taste. Firefly squid with miso dressing was a novel treat. First time trying these miniature squid, let alone raw. Recommend for adventurous eaters, the texture and ocean taste were enjoyable and enhanced by the miso dressing. Be sure to enjoy it wrapped in the shiso leaf. The environment in the restaurant is lively, nicely furnished and decorated. Though the noise can get loud, but thats part of the fun.

It took us awhile to get here but we finally made it. Sushi Edomata is the spinoff from Sushi Sam's. The location is still in San Mateo about 20 blocks or so from the original location on 3rd. The place is still fairly small, but aesthetically pleasing and warm. It was wonderful to see many familiar faces still running the restaurant. They only take reservations for dinner now. We had one for 8 p.m. but weren't seated until closer to 8:20 p.m. This was the same issue they had at Sushi Sam's, but not as bad. Hopefully this will improve over time. The special fish is now only one nigiri per order, but I was super happy that they had rosey seabass on the menu and they weren't out of it. It was $10 per piece. The toro is now $13 a piece. Prices have gone up quite a bit. Six of us, including a bottle of sake and a couple of beers, came to $840 with tip. Steep pricing for a Friday night meal. I really enjoyed my experience and was delighted to eat my favorites again.

Previously I was only able to get a table by lining up 15 minutes before their lunch opening but was pleasantly happy that they updated their reservations to the online system. I, most recently, was able to call same day and get a 8 PM dinner reservation. Kelvin was super friendly and very accommodating and I appreciated that he was able to check with the other reservations and call me back prior to confirming any availability. Lunch time is great since it's easier to get a seat but just be aware most of special fishes aren't available at that time. My go to fish here is Akamutsu but they always run out which is a bummer. Their California rolls are the best! Don't sleep on it. Their Kani salad is fresh and creamy just like their California rolls. Hokkaido uni is rich and has no metallic aftertaste taste. Monkfish liver is buttery and the umami sauce they added to it was delightful. Baby lobster was cooked to perfection and had no chewiness. All the wait staff are fun and really accommodating and I highly recommend coming here for dinner with friends, family or significant others.

Made a last minute reservation for 8pm and was seated right in front of the sushi chefs. We ordered the omakase and enjoyed every piece. Everything tasted fresh and the fish to rice ratio was perfect. My fave pieces were the uni, toro and rosy sea bass! Cant wait to come back and try more!

I'm glad Sushi Sam revitalized into Sushi Edomata. The infamous Sam Special temaki still tastes divine as ever, with a side of nostalgia. This was our first time dining at the restaurant as well as ordering the omakase menu, which entails of 9 nigiri and your choice of dessert. Additionally, we ordered 3 of their handrolls per person (Sam Special, Chili Dog, California Special). Unsurprisingly, the last course of the nigiri, which was the fatty tuna, was the most memorable. The fried shrimp was a great contrast in textures as well. I do like that they don't apply too much wasabi. I wasn't 100% impressed with all of the fish though; one or two had that refrigerated/cold texture that you wouldn't expect from high-end fish preparation. The bill totaled to over $200, yet we left not quite full. I'd still come back for the iconic temaki, but may stick to getting sushi rolls and/or select nigiri. I'd recommend reserving chef's counter seating over the closely arranged tables. Do expect a bit of a wait though even if you have a reservation.

Quiet before the storm. Pic of literally 1 min before the seats were filled

Ask the Community - Sushi Edomata

Is this place good for a large party of 10?

It's hard to accommodate that size online, you need to speak with the staff directly and book at least a week or two ahead

Do a lot people wait at opening hour at lunch on a Saturday?

Yes, it's fairly popular and busy on weekends.

    Does lunch require reservations?

I would recommend reservations as this place fills up fast even if you are a walk-in.

Do they take reservations for omakase?

Yes, call during the afternoon hours (when they are less busy) or later in the evening to make a reservation. :)

    Do they serve Sake now?

If you look at the photos, under "menu," there is a recent post of a receipt showing beer purchase, and if you look at "drinks," there are photos of sake bottles. But, we'll be going soon and I will check back in with a definitive answer!

We quickly glanced at the menu and decided to get the 8-pc chef's nigiri for $63. It also came with a egg castella and a slice of lemon cheesecake for dessert. The fish was freshly delicious and the nigiri had the perfect amount of meat to rice ratio. I truly enjoyed the lemon cheesecake as well. Service was a bit lacking but we did go on a busy Saturday evening. We had to call a waiter or waitress to give us the tablet to order each round, and we ended up making it to 5 rounds within the 90 minutes they give for the AYCE. They also have a rule for ordering where each person can only order one starred item per round - which I found a little strange at first. I did appreciate how the AYCE came with hot sake though! We got there during dinner hours and were seated right away, party of 6. The place was nice and modern inside and staff was friendly. System: The way it works is that 2 non-star item and 1 star item per person per round. No problem, or should I say there is a problem. They DID NOT have UNI and SCALLOP available to order. So I'd ask about the ame-ebi and there is an additional charge. Now, these are like the main star items and they're out! So now we are just having oysters and so call Wagyu nigiri. Oysters were not the freshest and the rice fish/beef ratio on the nigiri was OMG, SMH. Well, at least it comes with free soft drinks and sake. I would not recommend coming, especially for dinner at $60 per person after tips and tax. If you are going to come, come for lunch and call first see what they Don't have. Japanese Uni Nigiri - 5/5 This was really good and creamy. Noma Roll - 3/5 This was okay. There were too many tempura flakes, which overpowered the entire roll. Dragon Roll - 5/5 Lion King Roll - 4/5 Karaage - 5/5 The kids really enjoyed this. Overall, we had a great experience for our first visit. Next time, I'd like to try more of their specialty rolls and some of their other special items as well.

The quality and variety of the fish is really good for the price, and this is a place I would be delighted to explore more of when I am in the bay. Highly recommend. Sashimi Omakase - Glistening set of thicc cut sashimi featuring the best cuts of classic beloved fish. I was very thrilled to receive both the belly of the salmon and yellowtail, which were glistening with the skin, paired with impressive knife work and delicate marbling. The pickled wasabi helped significantly to give it that uplifting kick for the white fish from sea bream to amberjack to snapper. Fat Boi Roll - Indulgent roll that starts with a delicious fried california roll to form the base, topped by an indulgent mix of sashimi, crab salad, and classic sushi sauces. I love that this roll is representative of a volcano, but nevertheless still tastes harmonious. Bluefin Lover Roll - Luxury coded roll that serves akami two ways, and is flavored with black truffle, pickled wasabi, and even more sauces to really give the roll the flavor it needs. I love the modern take on this roll, and its generosity in size. Food: +1 Presentation: +1 Price: E Atmosphere: E Service: +1 Menu: +2 Insta/Yelp/Beli: @amei_eats Insta/TikTok: @ameizing.race

Good for lunch or light dinner given the simplicity of the menu items - predominantly handrolls. Sushi tacos were tasty - recommended. Chopped fish mixed with complementary mix of sauces, green onion, and mild jalapeño served on a well-battered nori chip. Truffle hamachi carried good balance of flavor. Overall, the handrolls were enjoyable and served one at a time so the nori is still crunchy. On one hand they were simple - protein, rice and maybe one more ingredient in the handroll. I'd be interested to have curated imaginative rolls, but I can appreciate keeping it simple as long as good ingredients. Dined on Tuesday for dinner and no problem getting seated. Best seats are at the bar for best enjoyment of the handrolls, though there are a few tables for lower seating. The stools are backless, so not conducive to a long meal at the bar. This may be considered a relatively pricey meal, but quality sushi should not be a cheap meal. From what I could taste, their fish was well prepared.

We were one of the few tables in the restaurant but it felt like it took a bit of them to get our food delivered. Being a group of 3, we ended up not receiving our orders at the same time and the apps came later than the handrolls. Soy sauce bottles were empty and had to be switched out. Their service didn't quite make a good impression for me.

I did not…read moreexpect to find such a good Japanese restaurant in a location that is quite far from the center of the food district. Besides the fried rice, the tuna and salmon sashimi are large, fresh, and high quality. Many times when I eat sashimi that is not very clean, it upsets my stomach and makes me want to use the restroom. However, the food here is both clean and fresh, and I had absolutely no discomfort after the meal. I also ordered chawanmushi and stir fried udon, both of which were very well executed. I would give full marks to this restaurant for both its sashimi dishes and main courses. The service is good, the environment is clean, and the dishes are priced normally, perhaps slightly on the higher side, but the value for money is reasonable. The only downside is that parking around this area is quite difficult. Overall, however, I would recommend this place to anyone who enjoys omakase and appreciates high quality Japanese cuisine.

I love the innovation and understand where some of the flavors are coming from, but I think a bit of finetuning would help the dish land better for me. Peach Shirome - The white cream adds a jarring saline forward combination to the sweetness of the peach and the leanness of the white fish. I think this dish could work if it focused on a more succinct concept. Chu Toro / Otoro - The fattinest of the bluefin really comes through in the cut, but it also tastes like the fish has been sitting there a while which starts to add a slightly unpleasant fishiness. Tuna Salmon Tower - Classic notion of Japanese style tartare tower that tastes very pleasant and smooth with richness coming from the fish and avocado. The fish needs to be diced significantly more so it can eat like a tartare though. Dash Taco - Intriguing bite that recreates the flavor of a taco instead with a more pleasant crispy seaweed shell thats more delicate all around from the tender salmon to avocado to the topped salsa. There was a…read moreshort line when I arrived, but the staff turned tables quickly and kept everything moving efficiently, so the wait wasn't long at all. I ordered their #1 recommendation, the Homura Aburasoba, and immediately scarfed it down. Popping the perfectly runny egg yolk into the noodles was incredibly satisfying, and every bite was packed with rich, savory umami. The noodles themselves were thick, chewy, and had a great bite that held up well to the sauce. I also tried the Wagyu dish, but it arrived more cooked than it appeared in the photos, which made the texture and overall experience a bit underwhelming. The sauce also leaned on the creamier side, which isn't my favorite pairing with Wagyu, so I'd probably skip that one next time. That said, the Homura Aburasoba alone is worth coming back for and easily earns Kajiken a well-deserved 5/5.

This guy likes to let the hype die down before trying the latest "cool place". Kajiken specializes in Arubasoba, which is like a dry ramen. I haven't had it here in the U.S., but tried it in Tokyo and loved it. I was excited to learn that is what Kajiken was all about. I tried their signature dish Homura Aburasoba with two poached eggs. It was absolutely fantastic. I think I might have found a solid challenger to my favorite ramen place in the downtown. This dish was an incredible blend of soba noodles, spicy minced pork, fresh vegatables and egg. Wow. I am a huge fan. Just thinking about it now makes me want to jump in MINI and race down to them Italian Job-style. I also had the ponzu karaage and it too was simple delicious. The ponzu gave the wonderful fried chicken an added zip. Oh, yeah. Service was good and our service kept refilling out water carafe, which as appreciated. I needed it cool down the spiciness of the soba. Okay, time for the iPhone snaps.
