Ordered a couple of burgers a few months ago and was slightly disappointed. Decided to give it another try and was even more disappointed. The place itself is dated and dingy. The menu has way way too many choices. The fries taste old and like reheated grease the "giant" burger is more like a dwarf. My chicken strip was decent. To top it off it was $30 for the burger and chicken strip basket. I could have went to a nice restaurant for that price. This place if definitely a dive, and not in the good way. Being new to Salem, I often drove by and noticed a bustling lunch crowd. Always looking for a good burger, I knew I'd be giving it a shot. I picked the wife up for lunch and off we went. The sign in the window said "ATM Inside". Cool. I rarely have cash. So we enter the establishment, scanning the menu as we stand in line. Finally, we approach and order, and I hand her my bank card. I'm informed that I'll need to withdraw money from the ATM machine. OK. No problem. Actually, problem. It's not working. So we left. Not too happy. But we gave it another shot.... Due to the volume of business they do for lunch I was expecting something special. Reality? Not so much. For starters, the patty was dry. And not very thick. The fries? Average. I've had better fries at fast food chains. They did have some interesting memorabilia throughout the place though. I used to eat here occasionally about a decade ago. It's been awhile. I always liked their burgers and fries. Nothing fancy, but good food. When I went online to find their hours, I was surprised at all the bad reviews. After that I really felt compelled to go and do my own review. The first thing I noticed when walked in was a number of flies hovering in the middle of the room. Made me cautious about swallowing one as I made my way to the counter. After ordering, I looked around and noticed at least a half-dozen tables that needed clearing. Finding a clean one to sit at was harder than it should have been. These tables remained uncleared for the majority of my visit. They seemed busier than normal. They also appeared to be short-staffed, with only one person manning the counter, the drive through, and the dining area. I ordered a "giant" burger (1/2 pound) and fries. My food was ready in a reasonable amount of time. The fries were not as hot as I would have liked. But the burger was great, just as I remembered them. These burgers have a very homemade taste which is still with me an hour later as I write this. Someone else said in a review that the food was greasy. But they said that as if it was a negative thing. I think it's a valid component in the homemade taste when you're talking a burger and fries. I will go back. These burgers are somewhat unique. It's worth putting up with the small negatives that I encountered. And I figure if I had caught them at a less busy time, things would have probably been different. Went through the drive thru today...it was our first and last time coming here. I ordered a barbeque beef " sandwich"...it was horrible. It came in a hot dog bun first off...it doesnt not say that on menu. There was hardly any meat ...and what meat there was tasted like burned barbeque sauce. The worst " sandwich" I have ever had. I would like to start by saying that I used to love burger basket I would go once a week, but about a year ago I had a very souring experience. I thought I would give it another go today, but unfortunately it was not good. There was one pickle, 2 tiny pieces of chopped lettuce, 1 onion round ,and the saddest looking tomato slice I have ever seen. It looked like a cherry tomato slice. The Reality: Doesn't hold a candle to In-N-Out Burger (my personal all-time favorite burger, and not a super high standard if I'm being completely honest). In one word: Tired. A 2.5 star kind of place, but I rounded up because I appreciate the attention to detail in the decor on the inside. I wish the attention to detail extended to all other areas, so I could leave a better review. A past reviewer noted the location was 'sketchy.' I'll say the exterior does look rather unremarkable and dirty, not quite adding up to the claim of the world's best burger. There were cigarette butts everywhere in front of the rocks right near the entrance. Inside, the decor was retro 50's on the walls, and old wood chairs. As another reviewer noted, when we walked in there was an older woman sitting down, talking on her cell phone in Spanish, with dirty tables (to be fair, there was only one other table of customers inside at the time). She immediately got off the phone and walked to the counter to take our order. Not overly friendly, but kind of a hurry up and order vibe. We stuck with cheeseburger baskets (ordered smaller burgers for our two boys), and two milkshakes. Service was prompt and we received our shakes and meal quickly. We did have to go back and order fry sauce because it's an additional charge (the sides are $1 each, and very large). Wish the lady would have mentioned each side of sauce was about 1/2 cup of sauce which 4 people could have easily shared, but oh well. Perhaps that's how they make money, and why several other reviewers say it's overpriced for what you get. Probably will try some other burger places before we'd go back. The ambiance was off too. Need music in their dining area. Pros: Cute decor, good milkshakes, quick service, large portions. Cons: Run-down exterior, customer service, overpriced, sloppy burgers, fake cheese, 1/4 inch thick onion slices (must use the same slices as their onion rings). Quite a few years back I had a great burger there....those day are gone!!Smallest cheeseburger and smallest tater tot and a fry sauce just shy of $10, which is fine. After a 20 minute wait - they gave me the wrong order. I handed it back and they said my was ready - oops sorry, just drive around to the other window.After another 5 minute wait I was handed a greasy bag. Inside was a mashed and mangled burger, on top of the tots and fry sauce. I tried a bite of the burger and the bun had been steamed so long it was like biting into a slug. I'll start by saying I walked out of Burger Basket located in Salem Oregon today, leaving 70% of my clam strip lunch behind. Not a resident of Salem, this was my 2nd visit to Burger Basket. As a return customer, the owner recognized me when ordering a clam strip dinner, $12.99 ‐ dinner included Cole slaw and a large amount of fries, nothing special, not a great value, but okay. My dissatisfaction and reason for leaving his restaurant without eating my meal? I simply asked for lemon and hot sauce for my Cole Slaw. Burger Basket doesn't have either. My mistake was suggesting to the owner; if I came back for another visit, I'd be interested in trying their oysters or fish & chips... it would be nice having lemon (even a basic juice packet) and perhaps Tabasco sauce - his response totally shocked me, in a loud voice said - "see that sign out there? We're a mom & pop shop, not McGrath Fish House"... I responded to say I frequently eat at smaller places, having available lemon (and hot sauce) when selling fish, oysters,and clam strips isn't unreasonable. His reply; "Good luck with that" I walked out leaving my lunch behind. I understand there's a cost to lemons, yet spending $12.99 for lunch, I'd guess most restaurants cut into small slices (maybe 10 or 12 cent cost?). Hot sauce, $2.50 bottle should suffice many customers. I decided to post this review after eating an early dinner ordering from another small business owner this afternoon (I was hungry not eating lunch). I will give this place 1 star, because they did make my food for me. I ordered a BLT, curly fry and large drink for $15!!! I figured I was going to get a great lunch! WRONG!! I remember this place having big and good burgers back in the day, late '80s. So either my standards have gotten much higher or the burgers have gone downhill. They are homemade-style burgers, and not the good kind. They're the homestyle kind that your mom made when she was angry at your dad, and you were stuck with the unseasoned bland result on a stale bun accompanied by electric-oven baked grocery-store brand frozen fries that have since gotten cold and are also not salted. Since last I was here they've redecorated with some kooky 1950's advertising decor that was painstakingly collected and precisely arranged to make it seem haphazard and kitschy. One of the best burgers, ever! We've always been a fan since we've tried this place. The burgers are consistently good, great portions, reasonable prices.The milkshakes are to die for!!! We went for another visit yesterday and again, they were great. I decided to try something different and chose a patty melt. The owner even came to my table to ask if there was anything they could do, if I wanted extra toppings or such. He said he'd vamp it up for me. It was probably the best patty melt I've ever had! Customer service is the worst! This is my first time coming here and the woman barley speaks English. I said I have never been here before so I'm not sure what I would like. She walks away doesn't say a word. The fries were cooked well, and there was plenty of them. The Hispanic lady working the counter could use some serious customer service skills. Pretty unfriendly and damn near slammed my basket of food down as she brought it to me. I guess you have to be a regular here for her to be pleasant, because she was great with those people.
