I have driven past this place hundreds of times until today. I figured a place called Burger Basket should make an ok burger. Boy was I wrong!! The burger itself utilized a low grade beef with lots of grease and no flavor. Toppings were definitely old and topped off with a cheap wet bun!! The fries were cooked with an unknown oil that will leave a film of grease on the roof of your mouth for days to come!! The fountain drink was about 50% water, bring your own if you are thirsty. I waited 14 minutes for a simple cheeseburger in a drive through with nobody in front of me and 3 customers on the inside at 145pm on a Wednesday. They got my order wrong, the onion slices were massive, the sauce was in one tiny spot on the burger, the meat was not properly cooked, and the overall taste was utterly subpar. I quit going there. It used to be one of the best in Salem-no longer, however. They don't take credit cards or large bills (what's a large bill anymore?) so I've had to drive out without any food. Sloppy, thrown together burgers, with gobs of mayo, and if you ask for onions you will get enough for eighteen burgers, so be careful! Also a not-too-friendly counter wait-staff. Gave up on the phone approach and once i got there they figured out what i wanted by me pointing at the menu and then themselves pointing until we agreed we were at the same idea... Not gourmet, but good. With fresh burgers, plump fries and creamy shakes (cherry chocolate ftw) all starting at under $3, expect accordingly, and expect to be satisfied. Do not waste your money here! I had an awful time from the start. As soon as I got there I had to wait for a good 5 minutes just to place my order. Then once I finally received my food, I left and got almost all the way home before realizing that they hadn't given me my full order. After returning to get my full order I then had to wait AGAIN! I got home and opened my burger and it was a mess. The buns were soggy, the burger was literally dripping grease and completely fell apart, and the fries tasted like they came straight from the freezer. Ate here today, after paying for two bacon cheese burgers, tots , fry sauce and one med ice tea, $27.00 later... I was NOT impressed!!! When the waitress brought our meal to table, the plastic top on the fry sauce had a long thick black hair on it, totally visible to the lady brining us our food. I asked before she handed me my meal what it was, and she was like oh so sorry I will bring you a new one. I was disgusted by the hair, but more disgusted that she charged me for it. I need to admit that I was judging a book by its cover. Drove past this a couple times and turned my nose up at it until someone actually told us it was amazing. They were correct, we had a fantastic lunch! My hubby ordered the chili cheese dog, sis in law had the bacon cheeseburger and I had the patty melt. Everyone was happy, my patty melt was so tasty, we all shared the small order of chili cheese fries which was more than enough for the three of us. Ordered a cheeseburger. I was almost done with it when I felt a hair touching the roof of my mouth. I grabbed the hair and kept pulling and pulling and pulling until the foot long hair finally came out. I obviously spit whatever I had in my mouth out and threw the rest away. Good burgers and fries but they also have lots of other sandwiches and hot dogs.I tried the Fried halibut fish sandwich with fries and a root beer and was very satisfied. My dad had a cheeseburger with lettuce tomato grilled onions and cheddar cheese and french fries and a Coke I believe that he was also satisfied as well. They have been around for a long time so you know that they know what they are doing. They don't have paper menus they just have an old school menu board so be prepared to stand and read a menu board for a minute or two. The staff is very nice. Good service on the day that we went they also have a drive through witch I have never used. Very minimal parking but definitely worth it if you can get in. Not sure how early and how late they stay open. I am pretty sure I've only been there for lunch never had a reason to go there for breakfast for dinner even know if they have breakfast. If good old American food is what you're looking for they've got you covered don't worry about your diet when you go to this place just throw all the rules out the window and enjoy the goodness. read more

Ate here last week and had a grilled cheese, fries, and a drink. Cost me over $12 for this, which seems pretty expensive for some bread, cheese, potato's, and soda syrup. It said on the menu that if you get a sandwich that you get discount fries, that didn't happen and when I asked about it they said sorry. The sandwich was very good but fries were a little too thick and not cooked long enough. Also the bathroom was really close to a table I was sitting at the the smell coming from it was terrible, doesnt seem the most sanitary of places. I love supporting local businesses, and I've been doggedly returning to Burger Basket once every couple of years in hopes of finding something positive to say..to eat, actually. Unfortunately, they still do not accept plastic (bizarre!) and still refuse to season anything. Fresh burger should be a plus, but when the results are as bland as this, taste (or lack thereof) matters more. Toppings are limp and/or canned, and the buns are not heated (forget about toasted). Staff remain indifferent. I am bewildered by the more enthusiastic reviews and embarrassed that this is the indie burger joint of note in Salem. The chains just should not be kicking the little guy's butt, folks, but when up against BB, they do. When it comes to taste, convenience, attitude, and cleanliness, they sure do. read more

Classic American burger restaurant!! Choose this place over the nearby chains any day. Homemade burgers taste delicious, feel me up, give me energy, and digest with no problem. I work in Salem. I try to make a point to stop in once a week after i get off work, Usually Fridays. The price is a little high for a burger basket around 10 dollars, but actually i do not mind paying it, as it's great quality, fresh and taste home made. It's way better than Five Guys, i do not go to FIve Guys anymore, now that i found this place. The people working the front counter can be a little slow at times, even when it's not busy, but they are all very nice and to me it's worth the wait, i do not care waiting a little longer for a great place like this. Moved here from so cal and the burgers at Burger Basket remind me of the Burger joints I went to as a kid. Hand made burgers and fries. I love the burger sauce it pulls it together so well. Didn't expect the quality of food to be so good. The burgers are probably my favorite in Oregon! The inside has a ton of awesome Coca Cola memorabilia and the Owner said they have been making hand made burgers and fries for 52 years...pretty awesome read more

Last fall, I and Poppa decided to stop at Burger Basket for a double burger because they used to be sooo good! We were each served a cold, greasy single which had obviously been sitting away from the grill for an hour or more. I was sick for three months thinking of the awful experience. I was going to call the health department, but since I don't live in Salem any longer, it was not easy to pick up the phone and call Marion County. I'm dumfounded as to why a restaurant that serves poison is allowed to stay open. I advise all of my old friends NEVER eat at Burger Basket. The Burger Basket used to be our favorite hamburger place however the last several years, especially in regards to upkeep and cleanliness, it has declined significantly. Was in just a couple of days ago, at 11 am, opening time and was obvious the place was not cleaned from the day before. Restroom was filthy, tables not clean and floor unswept. It would appear the Health Dept has not inspected this place for quite some time. Prices are way to expensive for a small hamburger. Service is slow however employees are very courteous. read more

On our way home to CA from Portland we pulled off I5 hoping to find a local burger joint. Luckily we ended up here. The food was exactly what we were looking for. The softest bun you could hope for on an old fashion burger. The owner even engaged us in conversation and to our surprise brought us a free order of his curly fries. I got a GIANT 1/2 Lb bacon cheeseburger with sautéed mushrooms and fries. $11.00 My wife got a small 1/4 lb bacon cheeseburger with fries. $7.00 BOTH of our burgers were the same smooshed up size that were very sloppily put together. They tasted ok, but honestly they were small for paying damn near $18.00. The fries were so bland and we wondered why the lady at the window asked us if we wanted ketchup or salt. Well, that's WHY! Ate there last month, great regular burger, fries very ordinary, friendly staff. Went there Sat, 9/13/14. I was looking forward to a giant hamburger this time, advertised 1/2 pound meat, What a disappointment. We ordered two regular burgers and one giant. When they came I could not tell the giant from the regular. I asked the waitress which is the giant, she snapped, the one in front of you. Only good thing here is the hand made patty! They fry with lard. They charge for sauce. The ketchup is kept at the table so it tastes like cocktail sauce (Soured ketchup) they accept cash only and the place needs a remodel and or a good scrubbing. Wont be in business much longer! read more

I got the giant burger, The lady charged me 7.29, THEN an ADDITIONAL 7.29 for tip. I'm glad I saw it on the receipt while printing because I never asked for my receipt call me it's a burger place what the hell do I need my receipt for? I'm really glad that I asked for it. Then I think what was the owner was fumbling and bumbling about trying to figure out how to refund me, she finally figured it out, refunded me the whole thing, then charged me the right amount. Keep in mind this is my first time here. OK now let's talk about the burger, they put miracle whip on it!!!! Are you serious? What kind of an abomination is this meat sandwich? It was just awful.
