We discovered this place the last time we were in Dunsmuir and we couldn't wait to return. Second stop, still great burgers.

On a road trip to CA last month, we were starving as we came down the 5 into the Dunsmuir area. I checked my Yelp app for some trusty recommendations and exited the freeway to try a burger at the Burger Barn. The town itself is a flashback to an era long gone with charming buildings and an old California theater that looks like it's from the turn of last century. We walked into the Burger Barn and were surrounded with Americana memorabilia and photos of local soldiers and high school athletic stars. We were greeted warmly and placed our order for "Bacon-Bleu" cheeseburgers and some iced teas. While waiting for our food on the patio, it was obvious that everyone in this town knows each other. There were greetings by name and the waves to staff at the BB. This town and the restaurant are like a seen from that old Chevy Chase movie, Funny Farm...felt like someone was waiting behind the scenes to "cue the deer!". The burgers were loaded with blue cheese, crispy bacon, lettuce, onion and Thousand Island sauce. They were so good that we decided on our return trip to WA, we'd stop in again. On the return trip, we had a BBQ Pulled Pork sandwich, the Philly Cheesesteak and a large basket of fries. The meats were tender in both sandwiches and the rolls were fresh baked on site. The fries are the run-of-the-mill thicker cut fry, but they were hot and perfectly salted when they hit the table. I love this place. If you're on the road and are craving some solidly good food, a warm atmosphere and a friendly staff that treats you like long lost friends, stop here! read more

Drove here after our hike to Mossbrae Falls in Dunsmuir, CA. A cute little burger joint in a small town that looks like a barn on the outside. There is a parking lot and plenty of street parking as well. The inside is decorated with food wallpaper and an old school diner feel. I ordered a grilled chicken burger and the boyfriend ordered a quarter pounder. Both comes with fries. We got shakes on the side. Delicious, good quality food that deserves a try. read more

Fries were yummy! Lettuce wrap burger was ok, it's not in-n-out. It's an ok place to eat for lunch. There aren't a lot of choices and we were feeling like eating a burger. I loved the idea of a ketchup and mustard jugs with a pump. It cuts down waste. read more

Guilty pleasures at the "Burger Barn" of Dunsmuir, CA on the way up to Mount Shasta. I like how you can order Fries and Chicken Strips in one paper tray, and there are a number of milkshake choices (mine was Butterscotch, hell yes!) that all come gooey-thick. The burgers themselves are, well, they're dirty craving shack burgers, but the fixings taste like a local vegetable patch -- that's a good off-set. Burgers, fries, shake. You put them all together and it's obligatory road trip piggin'. I'm kind of serious about this: If you are on a road trip on route to Mount Shasta, you might as well stop here. You can eat in Shasta, but if there's a festival or something or large local traffic, you're gonna waste a lot of time. Also, the people are nice at the "Barn." Other sandwich options, too. This is exactly the kind of burger place that I love. A small town, off the map burger shack, with amazing burgers. I ordered a regular burger for $3.99, and for an extra 60 cents I added cheese to it. I also ordered onion rings, also for $3.99. The cheeseburger was thin but amazing. It comes with all the usual burger goodies: lettuce, tomato, and mayonnaise. The burgers here also have an added smear of 1000 island dressing on top. A very welcome addition I may add. The onion rings were good, but a little uneven. Some were great, while others were undercooked. Some of the rings even had up to three onion slices in it. The batter was great though, and they were definitely delivered hot. The service here was also amazing. Sensing a pattern here? The woman who took my order was very nice, and when I declined the offer for a soda, she very happily offered me glasses of water. The interior is very cute to say the least. Both the wallpaper and the curtains above the windows featured old school classic menus and recipes. Lining the walls is a little shelf with lots of cute knick-knacks sitting atop. Don't settle for places like Denny's or god forbid McDonalds, when places like Burger Barn exist out in the world. read more

The Burger Barn is located in a classic roadside diner building in the historic downtown district of Dunsmuir on old highway 99. It's an easy on and off from Hwy-5 and a nice change from the fast chain food restaurants that dot the highway. This little restaurant was busy on a Wednesday and I can understand why. Stopped by at around 4pm on a Monday afternoon. There were no other customers, and as soon as we walked in the gentleman behind the counter offered to take our order. You walk in and place your order at the counter and pay there prior to receiving the food as opposed to being sat and waited upon. His attitude was professional, he answered the few questions we had. I liked the interior of the building. There is seating for dining in [They have to-go as well] and there are many community photos and decorations on the wall. It didn't feel dirty, simply well frequented for many years. There are two bathrooms located around back for customers - The staff can tell you the passcode. The bathrooms were clean. A family with a small child visited, as well as a local man doing work on his computer, and a woman who picked up a phone-placed order. The surrounding town is the kind of place where you can see children of all ages riding bikes up and down the main stretch. The food is what I was expecting from a smalltown burger joint. They aren't hand formed patties or exotic fries - It does seem to be frozen products. However, the food was prepared quickly, correctly, and deliciously. I ordered a double burger with cheese and bacon, and my partner ordered the Barnstormer [Pepper jack cheese, BBQ sauce, bacon, onion, and onion rings] We also both got fries and a small shake. Our order was brought to the table hot, and the fries weren't over-salted. The milkshakes were thick and flavorful. I enjoyed the food and service at this location! Our total cost was around $28, not counting tip. I feel that's a bit pricey, given that the food is frozen/thawed. However, this is a small town local establishment, so I understand their prices and product choices. Being on vacation, the price wasn't an issue, but if I was looking for a quick and cheap meal I would probably settle on a fast food joint next time. It would be sacrificing a bit of quality, but it would save a noticeable amount of cash. Not to say that I wouldn't eat here again! I would simply need to be in more of a "Support your local businesses" mindset than a "I'm hungry and only have $5" situation. read more

Between my mom living in Dunsmuir and me might as well being an honorary resident, I've gone to Burger Barn enough that it might be my second kitchen. The ladies here are all very nice! Though a bit pricey (it IS an outlying area as far as food distribution standards go) I gladly pay the price for a delicious veggie burger with whatever fixins I like. The mushroom burger is delicious and the portions are always either too much or at least enough to feed you if you're completely ravenous. Their burgers definitely don't disappoint, but their shakes and ice creams are good too! I take my daughter here to get a soft serve cone and man, it's more than a three year old can handle, but well worth it because they LOVE to see her try to tackle the whole thing. With that said, Sandy is awesome. She's been so nice to my mom and my daughter since they moved to Dunsmuir. My kidlet stays with my mom while I'm in school and it's nice to know there are people out there that still think a little kid is a treat and not satan-on-wheels. The atmosphere is awesome too. The place is decorated in happy colors that I love to look at. Seating can be sparse but people are usually in it for the to-go order anyway. Like I said, great service, good portions, though a bit pricey. In Dunsmuir I'd go no other place for a great burger with wonderful atmosphere. read more

Siskiyou County is the stomping ground of my youth, but we rarely pass through here anymore. But on a recent trip to Redding, we did an afternoon drive up the 5 just for fun. Nice place, friendly service, fairly clean and dog friendly outdoor seating made for an enjoyable Saturday late lunch/early dinner. The burgers were done to perfection and the toppings crisp. I had the buffalo sauce on mine and asked for an extra side of their "special" sauce which made for a messy but enjoyable experience. Fries were fantastic. The rest of the family enjoyed their meal as well. For a casual, relatively inexpensive place that surprised me with a nice bottled beer selection, it made for a nice afternoon. Supporting local business on our way through town. Fires aren't good for any business...much less one that is right off the highway that gets shut down for 3, 4...5 days! We weren't hungry but there's always room for ice cream and they have those yummy flavor burst soft serve cones! Delicious and Friendly. From the looks of the place, it looks like this place would be a great place to stop for a burger. Place was busy with locals picking up meals and several tables had people enjoying their food. I LOVED LOVED LOVED the food. My family comes here every year when we vacation in Lake Siskiyou. The food is amazing and I would recommend it!!! However, this would be a 5-star review but both times I went this week only one of the employees was wearing a mask (a young woman) and both male employees that were there had no mouth or nose coverings when they were making the food or bringing it out to our table. I understand that Dunsmuir has had virtually no cases, but it only takes one person to make the virus spread so I didn't understand why only one employee was wearing one and the others weren't. Almost all the customers wore them and even the signs outside said to so it made me uncomfortable to receive food from the employees that refused to wear them. The food is very good, just know that most employees aren't following the guidelines for wearing masks, so don't be surprised. read more

We ordered to pick up and eat our burgers back at our cabin. We've been coming to Shasta/Dunsmuir for many years now and I'm surprised we'd never eaten here before (we usually pack and cook all our food when we're there). But anyways, we ordered two double cheeseburgers, a barnburger, and fries last night. Wow! The burgers were really good-like homemade burgers on the grill good. The barnburger was not spicy as I had expected but usually spicy things are for an average tolerance level anyways. But the burgers weren't greasy at all as I had expected. The fries were definitely fresh and not dripping with oil. I can honestly say I wanted to call and order another because my burger was that good. OK.....SO dont get what people are talking about here. This place is charming YES, super sweet employees YES but thats IT. They make a huge costco run and then serve up the food. Frozen burger pattys, costco buns,costco frozen fries,costco frozen onion rings....etc etc. NOTHING was GREAT. My son loved his fish and chips, that was it. As for the soft serve...something I love...this is more like ice milk, not creamy at all...PASS. We were driving home from Portland and decided to stop by Dunsmuir for a quick lunch. BB looks like a small family run joint with pictures of Dunsmuir from the 1900's and of local community pasted all over the walls. I purchased a regular burger and it was flavorful. It seemed like the bun and patty were store bought, but I honestly can't say for sure. The bun was soft and pillowy and the patty was nicely seasoned. It came out perfectly constructed! Not at all like the slop at McD's. My friend had the onion ring and soft serve ice cream which were both run-of-the-mill, nothing less. If you're looking for a simple burger with no frills, BB will meet that expectation. We love burger barn!! My family has been vacationing in Dunsmuir every year for as long as I can remember. And we always make a trip to burger barn (sometimes more than one) Their food is delicious, very fresh and tasty burgers! The staff is so nice and always eager to help. They have this ice cream machine that swirls flavor along the outside of the ice cream and it's delicious! They used to have one of these machines at Disneyland but now this is the only place I've seen one! Very worth the short detour off the 5 for a delicious meal! read more
