I didn't get a chance to give credit to all the small businesses when we came to siskiyou county last month so making sure I do it now. We visited siskiyou county last month for about two weeks, we stumbled upon this hole in the wall burger joint and were pleasantly pleased with our meal. For the price and for being next to a town pool it my burger was cooked to perfection and my husband French fries were crispy just like he likes. I had a shake as well and it was pretty delicious. The only thing I'd note is it wasn't as clean inside as I would have liked but Like I said for a small burger place where It seemed like a lot of locals tend to love It was good. Sten's has tough competition with Yaks right down the road, but they hold their own with delicious, fresh smash burgers! I had a Duxelles burger, which came with two patties, swiss cheese, and of course the duxelles, which is a mixture of finely chopped of mushrooms, onions, and herbs. The duxelles adds a earthly, rich flavor to the burger. The spot is old school, but full of heart. read more

We were heading down I-5 after picking up a bed frame in Mt. Shasta. I hadn't eaten anything yet so we stopped at Sten's Burger Strand instead of getting gas station food. It turned out to be great! Ok don't let the outside fool you. It took a while to get our food but once we did, you understand why. The burgers are hand made and seasoned well, the bun is expertly grilled on one side and soft on the other which makes a perfect texture combo in your mouth. I got the single smash burger and he got the double with cheese. Both were amazing! It can be expensive here but IMO the food is totally worth it. We wanted a shake or some ice cream but unfortunately the machine was down so we have to come back now There was some interesting art pieces in their outside eating area and beside to look at the trees for extra surprise art... 10/10 will be back! read more

Awesome shakes and soft serve ice cream and super good smash burgers and fried chicken sandwiches. Grabbed a bunch of burgers and shakes "to go" before hitting our "secret" fishing spot in Dunsmuir, and man-oh-man, does this food hit the spot when you're fishing at the river. I killed the pineapple soda milkshake that I had everyday during our camping trip. These are ridiculously good--evil for anyone trying to resist too much sugar--cause these are ridiculously addictive. These brilliant concoctions are a blend of pineapple soda mixed up with soft serve ice cream in a cup--unbelievably tasty. This drink is worth it alone. Fried cheese curds with their homemade ranch dipping sauce is also stupidly addictive. Evil if you're trying to watch your cholesterol like my doc says I should.... Excellent! John and his wife were super friendly. The interior was clean and welcoming. The deluxe burger looked amazing and tasted even better. The veggie burger was good and all of our shakes were tasty, perfectly thick and we were given the extras! The fries were golden brown and fried to perfection. I'm in my mid 30s, so I'd like to think I've had plenty of good burgers in my life.........but in all my life I've never had as memorable of a burger than STEN'S! I wasn't overly excited when we rolled up and saw they had smash burgers. My only experience had been that Smashburger chain, which to me is bland. Nope, nothing like that place at all. The flavor?! Out of this world. The fries, crispy perfection! It was so good I insisted to my husband we go there twice during our four day visit. Oh, and did I mention the workers are friendly and welcoming. Upon noticing our pups, they quickly handed us some treats. Both times we took our meals to go, but they do have a small inside, as well as some tables outside. Already dreaming of my next Sten's burger. Hope to go back this summer! read more

In the midst of checking out various waterfalls in the area while on a road trip in late June, we decided it was time to grab a quick lunch in Dunsmuir. Chose Sten's Burger Strand after doing minimal research since we were pretty hungry and had a lot we wanted to do that day and wound up very pleased with our selection. Sten's had quite possibly the best smashburger we've ever had, so good. It was a 1/3 lb smashburger split into two patties which is why it looks so massive. The smash was excellent; it had that bit of crispiness you get from smashing while also retaining a lot of juiciness within the patties. Also enjoyed the shakes we got. The family running the place was also super nice. I would definitely return if I'm ever in the area again. My partner would probably try the BBQ next time if it's available (he was really tempted by it, and it looked good) but as for myself, I'm probably gonna get the burger again haha. read more

Take out | Lunch | $30-50 per person! $$$$ I'm so sad to report that we visited Sten's again today August 31st 2024. The wonderful surprise I wrote about before has turned into kind of a nightmare. I don't see any sign of the family who used to own the place and I think that's the explanation for what follows here. I didn't see any adults working, and while I don't like to criticize teenagers doing their job, an adult manager may have made a very different experience for us. The order taking was lackluster and with lots of distractions because the young person did not know the menu prices, combo details, etc. Substitutions which were agreed to did not show up on the bill, with the cost ended up being higher because of it. There was not a single order in before ours that two hamburgers and an order of tots and fries took more than 30 minutes to get prepared. The food was nowhere near the quality of previous visits. We watched The tots, fries, and hamburger patties be pulled from the frozen food bags they were bought from the store in. We both had cheese on our burger and it was almost impossible to tell that cheese had been added. The meat in the mushroom burger tasted exactly the same as the meat in the beef burger. No hair nets were being worn, nor were any food service gloves used. The cleanliness inside the small cooking area looked like it left a lot to be desired. And here's the kicker - for these two hamburgers, store-bought frozen tots and fries, and two milkshakes (The chocolate was quite good, the strawberry was ho hum), The bill was $63.04. The clerk actually announced the total at $54 which was shocking enough, but then the system added a 20% tip that she had not said anything about so when we ran the card it actually came out to $63 and change. We nearly canceled the order and left - we both wish we had listened to that first instinct. Slow service, no adult supervision, a drastic drop in the quality of food compared to what we had there before, outrageous pricing. It is no wonder that nobody was ordering anything when we got there, while Yak's, 200 ft away was filled to capacity. Unfortunately, we are down to two burger outlets in Dunsmuir which we will frequent - Yak's and Burger Barn. I encourage the folks at Sten's to take this honest criticism to heart. The previous family who owned the place was quite successful. Look back to their menu, their quality ingredients, their attention to detail, and you may find you will have a line of people outside like they did. However, you will definitely need to drastically cut your prices or you will not be around long. read more

Amazing smash burger! We came to Dunsmuir on a road trip and went next door to Stens to have a beer at the "other" burger joint in town. Looking at their menu it was too foo foo for us. We don't need bells and whistles; just a good burger and Stens makes just that. I ordered my burger with cheese, sautéed onions and bacon. When I bit into it, I could tell there was no bacon. My husband went back up to the counter and they had mistakenly put the bacon on his burger instead. They immediately made me a whole new burger. I would've been happy with just being given a couple of slices of bacon. This was probably one of the best burgers I've had. Seasoned perfectly and the bun was super good. In my solid top five. Great customer service and they were so gracious about the mistake. We will definitely stop here again!!! read more

Gourmet Food without the Gourmet Price! The food is absolutely amazing, even amaze-balls if your a cringy millennial. The fries are incredible, crunchy on the outside, and fry'ie on the inside. The milkshakes are bussin, and the milkshake selection is much bigger than it was previously. The burgers are very juicy, and high quality. I was going to try Yak's, but the closest parking spot I could find was opposite this place. I took a look at the menu and decided to give it a try. I'm SO glad I did! I got the Sten's American Dog (I'm a self-described "hot dog enthusiast"), fried cheese curds (how could I not after 20+ years in Wisconsin?), and a root beer freeze. The dog was outstanding, despite the fact that it had ketchup on it. The dog was carved to curl up a bit in the fryer, but was still juicy - a difficult trick to pull off. The New England-style bun was toasted on all sides, and as we all know, you can't have a good hot dog without a good bun. The curds were crunchy and not too greasy. The freeze could have been thicker, but that's just a matter of personal preference. I'm so glad I travel between Southern Oregon and the Bay Area a lot so I can go back! read more

Just had a fantastic meal at Sten's! My son loved his smash burger (he said it was grilled perfectly and the meat tasted so fresh). My husband and I both tried the brisket and it was phenomenal (they have bbq specials on the weekends in the winter)! The mango soft serve was as good as hi-chew candy! Really nice couple who own the restaurant. Quick and friendly service. We look forward to coming back again! Ok, so very little left of middle America. And low and behold - we found it here in Dunsmuir, CA. Right off Hwy 5, you'll find this little jem - Sten's Burgers. Reminds me of the old Foster's Freeze from my home town. In the back they're flipping juicy burgers topped with melted cheese. In the front they' are mixing up creamy shakes, Malts and fresh soft serve ice cream. Yummy!! We were between meals and we're craving for some soft serve. Their swirl was Vanila and a sweet flavor that comes from Disneyland. Too sweet for us. Barbro went with straight vanilla soft swirl. I went for the chocolate malt. OH, and as I paid, I see the sign saying "Fresh local Dunsmuir BlackBerry Shakes - limited time only". Couldn't pass this up. Bought a Blackberry shake too. Figured I would throw it in the freezer for desert tonight. Yummy!! And while we waited we were entertained by the owners son and his new 28 speed bike. Very cute. My family loves to eat the Duxelles burgers, made from locally sourced Prather Ranch Beef, and I love to order the Lauri's famous, a decadent mustard crusted veggie burger!! We make them into basket deals. The burgers and fries are scrumptious and can't be beat!! It is not fast food. It is delightful food that they serve quickly as possible!! I love the option to either dine in or order the food for takeout. They offer a variety of fried sides as well, which are equally as scrumptious. For your sweet tooth, I recommend their milk shakes, hot fudge sundaes, or their dairy free lemon chiffon freeze. Drinks too!! A variety of sodas, home brewed Organic Earl Grey iced tea or Stubborn soda. I totally recommend that you take your family and friends here for a beautiful meal!! read more
