What a place! My family and I spent the weekend in Dunsmuir. Not knowing anything and exploring everything. I was delighted to find Yaks. From the amazing food. To the friendly and fun service from the owner. To the quirky way things are set up it quickly became a favorite spot. I ordered from there every day we were in Dunsmuir. The place is decorated in the coolest unique way from the silly, to the whimsical and some seriously beautiful art pieces. It was VERY kid friendly. Hop scotch tapped on the floor, a fun "dance zone" where you get your menu and a whole wall full of toys to play with. The place is truly a gem and I wish the owner and all employees much success and happiness. You created something really special and it makes me want to drive 4 hours for a burger. read more

Make this your stop along the 5, right off the freeway going south. Yaks is known for their huge fresh baked cinnamon rolls and juicy burgers (get plenty of napkins). Order first, sit down, and they will bring food to you. If you are on a diet, I wouldn't suggest stopping- this is a cheat meal for sure! Ps they also have Yaks Shack in Mt. Wow this spot really blew me away! I saw the reviews but thought this place looked a little gimicky however with such high reviews I had to check it out, and it did not disappoint! The counter service was very streamlined with the option to eat in or out, but as the friendly woman at the counter the food would be hard to eat in the car so we decided to eat in, which was the right choice! The decor is eclectic and fun, but the best past was the interactive sensory wall! Like what? Who does that? We are often hesitant to take my 2.5yo out to eat but this had him entertained the whole time and I was actually able to eat my food in peace, it was a small miracle. Now the burgers... we got the jalapeño bacon burger and the "this little piggy never came home" burger, which were huge and packed with delicious toppings and sauces! The jalapeño bacon burger had jalapeño bacon crumble and fried jalapeños with both burgers having their signature fried onion strings as well. The burgers were of course ridiculous to eat, we made it through half each but they were delicious! We also upgraded to the Parmesan fries instead of the chips that come with it. We also got the sticky bun (so worth it) and the tots which my husband loved but were a touch sweet for me. Even though it's counter service the service still felt special. The friendly woman behind the counter (who we later found out was the owner's daughter) came around checking that everyone was doing well. I also appreciated that they have everything you need easily accessible by the counter to help yourself to silverware, to go boxes etc. but my one small critique is I wish they had extra napkins at the tables. I had to try this burger joint because of the incredibly high Yelp ratings. The burger and fries combo was maybe the best I have ever had. The flavors on my "OMG Burger" were unusual and fabulous. The toppings included house/made lemon-ginger marmalade -- amazing flavor! Abby, the gal running the front room, had complete control of her domaine. She took orders, smiled, checked to make sure you loved your meal, smiled more, and was efficient, quick, and polite. This place will fill your gut with a heavy meal. We came here on a Thursday around 3pm, and was greeted with a huge welcoming from Sarah! She was such a great help and was so personable. The menu is extensive but all sooo good! We got the This Little Piggy Never Came Home- the highlight of this burger is the Gorgonzola cheese. Cooked to perfection- a bit on the saltier side, but try one of their 20 beers on tap to wash it down. The other burger we got was the Vavavoom- and for you mushroom and onion lovers- it's a must! Fries are delicious. Everything is in house made- down to the sauces (ketchup too!). Before leaving you NEED to get the sticky bun. Warm yummy moist and flavorful. Yak's on the 5 is one of those places you just can't forget about. Here I am two weeks later writing a review. We accidentally stumbled upon it on our roadtrip and now it's the only stop we're looking forward to on our 1200+ mile drive home. The food portions were huge, the atmosphere was welcoming, and the staff made it feel family-friendly from the moment we walked in. They even have a wall that's basically a kid magnet -- and they fully welcome kids enjoying it. Our kids happily played while we actually got to finish eating our meal. Total win-win! This was one of the best burger places i have ever been to. The inside decor and choice of beers on tap and togo were top tier. I got the pickled pastrami with pastrami mustard sauce. This one was great concoction. Each bite tasted like bits of heaven... i washed it down with one of their very own stouts (the coffee vanilla stout). The service was excellent and they put little hidden art gems all throughout the restaurant. My girlfriend got vegetarian burger with all kinds of added extras to it. She fell in love with it and could barely fit the thing in her mouth it was so huge. We got garlic parmesan fries which were cooked to order and unbelievably good. I had a laugh at the restroom decor which was film/movie shots of actors on toilets. This was an experience not just a place to grab a bite to eat. The staff were super friendly and very accommodating. It's too bad it's so far away from Los Angeles, otherwise i would be here more often. I will dream of going back here forever, everything about Yaks is phenomenal! We were greeted with genuine smiles, a simple instruction of how to order and laughter from all angles! My friend and I went on an adventure and booked a tour for the Shasta Caverns! Our well informed (and may I say, very handsome tour guide) recommended Yaks when our tour concluded and he was giving some suggestions about other sites and bites in the area. I am so glad he suggested Yaks on 5! This spot is NOT TO BE MISSED! Seriously, the burgers are as big as your head!! And with combos you e never seen before - loaded with bacon, sauces, grilled onions, jalapeños, ooey , gooey meaty cheeses! Multiple patties and burgers of mind blowing height! The decor is funky and colorful and very alive. There's a diner/alternative/artsy vibe here with chandeliers and beads and old necklaces hanging in the windows. Very family friendly - playing oldies and country music. The fella that was taking orders is like a familiar uncle that is both boisterous and warm. The kind of man that laughs heartily without abandon and gives you a wink while calling out the orders. They have you pull a laminated strip of paper out of a can that has a funny title on it so you know when your order is up. We got "Single and ready to mingle". Funnily enough, my friend and I went in with the intention of ordering burgers. But we ended up getting a pastrami sandwich (mine) and the ribs plate (hers). We were NOT disappointed. My pastrami sandwich pictured here was bursting with flavor. There are two pastrami sandwiches on the menu and even a burger WITH pastrami on it too! I opted for the simpler pastrami sandwich. And while simpler in amount of ingredients (the other one has cheese and sauces on it) it was not SIMPLY a sandwich. Thinking about it now is actually making me crave it! It was delicious - I highly recommend it. Okay... the ribs. Guys... the ribs are incredible. Honestly I was so impressed because for a place that really specializes in their burgers, the two non burger items we ordered were top notch. The fries are also amazing. Nice and crispy with good garlic flavor that I was still tasting hours later. If you're ever driving north through this area in Dunsmuir - definitely make it a part of your trip. This is easily one of the top 5 best burgers I've ever had. They have tons of unique toppings and I loved the marmalade/cream cheese/jalapeno popper combo. The tots were the best tots I've ever had. The brown sugar cajun rub on them is incredible on its own. The toppings make them even better. They were super friendly and the picnic tables out back were a great place to enjoy our meal. Yak's on the 5 spreads joy with every bite. We made a quick pit-stop during our road trip up north and realized this place needed a second visit on our way back home. The parking lot is very limited, so we parked on the street. I had spotty cellular service, so they provided free Wi-Fi for anyone planning to write a review for a free Sticky Bun. Upon entering the restaurant, I heard the staff call out "Bruce Lee, your order is ready". I was surprised by the name and laughed because they trolled me. We randomly selected our order name, "City Slicker" from a jar. The staff members are funny and have so much spunk. We shared the Sticky Bun, Scott's Tots, and the Cilantro Burger. Before devouring the Sticky Bun, they recommend microwaving it for a few seconds to get it nice and warm. Scott's Tots made us excited to come back home. I've never tasted tots that were this crispy. It almost has a double-fried bite to it, but the description doesn't say. The tots are loaded with sweet and spicy brown sugar-Cajun rub, bacon, jack cheese, gorgonzola, and house-made chili-lime aioli. I'd come back for this alone. The Cilantro Burger looked huge in the pictures so we shared it. They don't skimp on the cilantro, which I love. I found this to be one of most memorable places to dine at during our road trip. Walking in, everyone is greeted warmly. Staff are very nice. Unfortunately, we were unimpressed by the food. Looking on the website, the burgers look huge, and there are no prices on the menu. Upon arriving, we saw most of the burgers are $22-$24, and that just includes chips. If you want fries, it's another $3-$4. The toppings on most burgers are just different variations of fried items and aiolis. I ended up ordering the Vava-Voom because I wasn't feeling the fried items on my burger. I got the garlic fries and my husband stuck with the chips so we could try both. We each got a different craft beer, but my husband wished maybe they had a basic light beer since the food is heavy. The wait for our food was very reasonable, especially since they had a constant stream of people. Once we got the burgers though, the buns were huge, but the burger patties very small. I had one small lettuce leaf, but lots of aioli. Most bites were just bun and topping. The fries were ok, but more Parmesan than garlic. The chips were your basic Lays like chip. I know it's an area with limited options, and then they received the Yelp Top 100 designation, but the prices were just too high for what we got. It's a very eclectic place, which was cool, but I didn't feel it lived up to all the reviews. I love a good burger, but this unfortunately isn't a place I would return to. read more

Wow. This is probably one of the most memorable roadside burgers I've ever had so far. The ambiance is very quirky. Different, but cute. The windows are all decorated with curtains handmade from cheap costume jewelry. Somehow, it kind of looks Morrocan. The location is so close to the freeway, it feels like you could almost reach out and touch it. Literally just right off the 5. The staff are over the top friendly. Very bubbly, and happy to offer local tourism tips to anyone who wants to listen. When you order, instead of taking a number, you pick a funky name out of an oversized tin can. I pulled out "Mountain Man," so, that was my name for my order. As I was standing in line, I noticed that they sell handmade stickers for some of the local waterfalls, as well as Yaks merch like t-shirts and beanies. It took me a long time to decide what to eat, but I finally picked the Come To Jesus burger. I don't think this was mentioned on the menu, but it came with house cooked kettle chips. There were options to upgrade to fries or garlic fries, which I declined. When they called out "Mountain Woman!" I was like, is that me? How accurate. The burger was so huge that I was unable to finish it all, and ended up taking maybe a third of it to go. (This was even though I had come in feeling very hungry.) It was easily big enough that I could have split it with someone else, especially if we had upgraded the fries. It was one of the biggest burgers I've ever been served in my life. The flavor of the patty itself was good, but nothing special. The amazing toppings were what really made this burger stand out. The combo of sautéed onions and ginger jam was to die for. Wow. I don't think I've ever had ginger on a burger before, but it was absolutely delicious. The flavor packed so much punch, yet at the same time, it was unexpectedly sweet. I didn't mean to be rude, but it was so good, I caught myself licking it off of my fingers. Good thing I had wet wipes in my car, cause I needed one. The brioche was fresh AF, and very tasty. This was my 4th times at Yak's, and visit was extra special because I brought my Jeep group for a little meet up. It turned out perfect. First, the food consistently solid every time. The burgers are juicy, packed with flavor, and cooked just right. Fresh toppings, soft buns, and that signature taste that keeps me coming back. The garlic fries are always a hit with the group. Crispy, well seasoned, and impossible not to finish. The staff handled our group smoothly and made us feel welcome. We even had a chance to meet Nancy, the owner, and she was genuinely kind and down to earth. You can tell she cares about the customers and the experience.
