I loved this place so much I would seriously consider getting a Yaks on the 5 tattoo on my neck. And honestly, it's not even because the food was great, although it absolutely was. It's the vibes, man. Vibes. From the second you walk through the door, the energy level is off the charts. The staff is great, the place is decorated like a crazy yard sale curated by someone with a very specific and slightly unhinged vision, and there are wild paintings, chandeliers and all kinds of funny stuff everywhere. It's kooky as hell, but you can also tell they take their food and service very seriously. I dug it. And yes, the food delivers. Yaks is known for its burgers, and these things are insanely huge. Like stacked Hong Kong skyscraper huge. Completely unnecessary. But if you're there with someone you at least kind of like, you should split one and for $5 extra they'll split one for you. They literally cut the burger patty in half, put each half on its own smaller bun, and split the sides. Genius. I promise, half is plenty unless you are a concrete worker. My wife and I shared the Overload, which had bacon, crispy fried onions and a bunch of other delicious nonsense, and it was fantastic. The fries were great too. And don't skip the sticky buns. They're sitting up front in a display case, just waiting there looking all beautiful and buttery and cinnamony, trying to convince you they are sexy. They're worth it. if we're allowed to lick the streets of heaven in the afterlife these are probably what it's going to taste like. Anyway, if you're driving down the 5 and you're even the tiniest bit hungry, stop here. You'll get a ridiculous burger, great food, great service and an atmosphere that feels like somebody turned the volume knob on a normal restaurant all the way to "HELL YEAH." Go to Yaks.
We had heard about Yaks and learned it was on Yelp's top 100 list, so of course, we had to try it. The menu has lots of choices and the portions are large. I had the Pastrami and it was delicious. The restaurant is located just off the 5 and parking is in front or around the back. The restaurant is clean and has a cozy feel to it. They also have fresh hot Cinnamon rolls throughout the day. I'll have to try one the next time. The food and service is good. Overall, it was a good experience, just a bit pricey.
Yak's was recommended by ChatGPT as a place to stop to eat on our long drive from LA to Tacoma. Being on Yelp's top 100 and conveniently located off the I-5, stopping there was a no-brainer. Yak's isn't just a restaurant, it's an experience. It is fun with great music and a place to dance in line, famous fresh cinnamon rolls and the burger choices are numerous , unique, and they are gigantic. My husband, dog and I shared the pastrami and it was very tasty! The young lady at the register was cute, friendly and genuinely interested in where we were from and where we were heading. It felt very welcoming. We hope to stop in again soon!!

Dubbed one of the top 100 places to eat in the US, Yak's is serving up delicious burgers, sandwiches, salads, and sticky buns. Come hungry because the portion sizes match the price. I had my heart set on a burger and ultimately landed on the Cilantro Bomb - a cajun seasoned burger topped with melted jack cheese, housemade fried onion strings, generous bunch of cilantro, lime aioli, and squeeze of lime. This burger lived up to the hype, and it's one of the most inventive creations I've ever had! You order at the counter, but there's a separate line for sticky buns and beer only. 20 rotating brews on tap and housemade sticky buns for a sweet treat! You can even get a free one for showing counter staff your review. Yak's is a fun spot, quirky, and worth visiting. Pro tip: get there early. I arrived about a half hour after opening and there was already a long line. However, food comes out quick and there's indoor and outdoor seating options. If you're dining in, you draw a name, which they call out for your order. Mine was Joe Mama, not to be confused with Yo Mama (yes they have both).
Love they are open everyday until 8pm. The burgers are Huge! So got the Big Ass Salad and kids bacon burger. They call your order with a name on a strip you get after paying- cute! I was Fairy Godmother. There's outdoor dining picnic tables and corn hole games. If you need a charge there's an EV station in the back too. Burger had a nice Smoke flavor. Salad was OK. Next time I'll try the tots.
Great variety of burgers on the menu. We went with the garlic and were very happy. Also ordered southwestern salad and smoked wing. Ambiance was unique and fun and service was pretty quick considering how busy of a place it was. Will definitely go back if in the area.

I drove up from the bay area to spend 2 nights in Dunsmuir. This place was highly recommended and I see why! I got the Cilantro Bomb burger and it lived up to the name! Huge cilantro flavor and a great cheese and sauce on it too. The chips were great as well as the beer selection. The service was amazingly fast and super friendly. The vibe in there is really unique with a lot of different decorations on the walls. Don't hesitate to stop here on the way through.
My husband and I drive to Oregon every year and on our way north, we make a pit stop at Yaks! This place never disappoints. Pretty big burger you have to smash down to bite into. Their burgers are so flavorful. My husband loved his burger and so did I. I would have never thought of putting cilantro in my burger, but I'm so happy they made it because I never want to live without it. I love their ambiance, it's decorated with a variety of chandeliers and they have a busy board for kids. It's perfect place for families. We're looking forward to stopping by here again!
Omg. If you are ever driving to Oregon on 5 and need a filling meal, stop at Yaks! Burgers were huge and on top of that they tasted great too. Perfect filling meal for a long drive. They don't skimp out on toppings and the burger patties were nice and thick. For all my ranch lovers, Yaks has great ranch too. They offer chips as a side but you can sub for french fries. Next time, I want to try the sticky buns because they looked yummy! The atmosphere is fun and lively with unique decorations. The older gentleman working the register was so sweet and offered some great recommendations for places to go in the area. They also have cute merch.

Now for the food. Ginormous burgers. I was able to split my burger and it was perfect amount. Upgrading to fries is a few dollars more but yummy. They give you a side of aioli and lavender ketchup! Definitely recommend! Everyone is so nice here. They have gluten free buns so that's another plus. It's hard for me to find gluten free places while traveling. I would definitely come back when I'm in the area. read more

I stopped at Yaks while in Dunsmuir and OMG -- the Scott's Tots are hands down the BEST tater tots I have ever had in my life. These are not your average tots. They were perfectly crispy and absolutely PACKED with flavor. Every bite was like an explosion of different flavors, and whatever combination of sauces, toppings, and fresh cilantro they use is seriously incredible. I'm going to be thinking about these long after I leave Dunsmuir. But what made Yaks even better was the entire experience. The place has such a cool, unique vibe and so much personality. You can tell this isn't some cookie-cutter restaurant--it has character and feels like a place people genuinely love. And the owner was SO incredibly nice and welcoming. That kind of hospitality makes such a difference, especially when you're visiting from out of town. Amazing food, amazing atmosphere, amazing people. If you're anywhere near Dunsmuir, GO TO YAKS and get the Scott's Tots. Seriously. Do not skip them. 10/10 -- one of the highlights of my trip to Mount Shasta! read more
I had seen this place on social media and wanted to see if the place was as good as it claimed to be. I have to admit it was pretty good. Didn't get to enjoy the inside dining area due to having a pet. So we sat on the back patio area. The food was delicious had a burger and fires were nice and crispy and burger was nice and juicy on a soft bun. The service was friendly but it took forever to get our order due to how busy the place was only down side. But I would recommend anyone traveling through Dunsmuir should stop and try it out! read more

We stopped at Yaks on 5 during our road trip to Oregon after hearing so many great things about it. We arrived around noon on a Friday. It wasn't overly busy, but there was a small line. We ordered the chicken sandwich and split it. (Just a heads up there is a charge for splitting a meal, which I didn't notice until after we paid.) The fries were really good, and the ranch was delicious. The chicken sandwich, however, was just okay and didn't quite live up to our expectations. I'd definitely give Yaks another try because I've heard such great things about their burgers. Next time, I'd skip the chicken sandwich and order one of the burgers instead. read more
We came here on our way home after camping. We didn't really know what to expect. It was busy. The line was long but it moved fast and the food came out fast. They had table inside and they also have table outside. The washer is so funny and very energetic. The burgers are huge!! And it's also pricey. We pad extra to "split" one or the burger. It was a perfect size of the kids. However, it would have probably been cheaper if we just got the kids menu. We opt out to get the other burger because the kids burger came in plain and you will need to pay extra for cheese and any other add-on. The smiley riley was good. I like the string of onion rings. It gives it a nice crunch, instead of those big onion rings. It was flavorful. My MIL ordered the ribs and replace the price with salad. The salad was good. The ribs-not as tender as I wanted it to be. The sticky bun is also really good. The kids really like it. It was perfectly cooked and the sauce I think everyone from our group enjoyed their food. read more

Extremely friendly small town joint. If you're in Shasta you gotta make a stop at yaks. Lots of good beer. Lots of good food. I recommend the Belgian pranqster beer. I recommend the garlic burger. read more
Wow this spot really blew me away! I saw the reviews but thought this place looked a little gimicky however with such high reviews I had to check it out, and it did not disappoint! The counter service was very streamlined with the option to eat in or out, but as the friendly woman at the counter the food would be hard to eat in the car so we decided to eat in, which was the right choice! The decor is eclectic and fun, but the best past was the interactive sensory wall! Like what? Who does that? We are often hesitant to take my 2.5yo out to eat but this had him entertained the whole time and I was actually able to eat my food in peace, it was a small miracle. Now the burgers... we got the jalapeño bacon burger and the "this little piggy never came home" burger, which were huge and packed with delicious toppings and sauces! The jalapeño bacon burger had jalapeño bacon crumble and fried jalapeños with both burgers having their signature fried onion strings as well. The burgers were of course ridiculous to eat, we made it through half each but they were delicious! We also upgraded to the Parmesan fries instead of the chips that come with it. We also got the sticky bun (so worth it) and the tots which my husband loved but were a touch sweet for me. Even though it's counter service the service still felt special. The friendly woman behind the counter (who we later found out was the owner's daughter) came around checking that everyone was doing well. I also appreciated that they have everything you need easily accessible by the counter to help yourself to silverware, to go boxes etc. but my one small critique is I wish they had extra napkins at the tables. I had to get up a couple times to get more napkins, with such big messy burgers you need a lot of napkins, possibly more than you realize! read more

As Dunsmuir natives now living in San Jose, coming home isn't complete without a stop at YAKS. Every visit reminds us why it's one of our favorite places. The service is always amazing. The staff is friendly, welcoming, and genuinely makes you feel like family. And the burgers? Simply the best. They're packed with flavor, cooked perfectly, and worth every mile of the drive. One piece of advice. Don't even think about leaving without a sticky bun or two! They're absolutely incredible and the perfect ending to an unforgettable meal. YAKS is one of those special places that keeps us coming back every time we're in town. If you're passing through Dunsmuir, this is a must-stop destination. You won't be disappointed! read more

Deliciously messy burgers surrounded by a kitschy environment, sign me up! We were greeted by Mike the owner and he was so welcoming. You could really feel the energy he's put in the place from the hanging chandeliers to wall set pieces. I ordered garlic fries, the garlic burger, and a sticky bun. The fries were absolutely loaded with cheese and garlicy flavor, but I wish they were a little crispier. The garlic burger came with a zesty roasted garlic aoli and a huge cheese skirt. It was so large and perfectly medium rare. I loved the crispy onions that added a nice extra texture. The sticky buns were amazing, stock full of sugar and syrup. Friendly from the moment you walk in! Great suggestions and asked great questions to figure out what I would like! Come to Jesus - wow we wow sweet and savory and just absolutely amazing flavors! Can't say enough good stuff. I would try other things next but this burger is a monster and can be shared!! Great crispy chips too! The onion bacon goodness from the burger is perfect on them and there is plenty! Great beer selection too and such a great vibe! I think i ordered the wrong burger. The breakfast burger was not that great. I was seeing incredible burgers coming out, and mine looked like the opposite. The burger patty on mine looked machine pressed. I never tasted the bacon. Good ambience, but disappointing $32 meal with no drink. Fries were good though. read more
We came here on a Thursday around 3pm, and was greeted with a huge welcoming from Sarah! She was such a great help and was so personable. The menu is extensive but all sooo good! We got the This Little Piggy Never Came Home- the highlight of this burger is the Gorgonzola cheese. Cooked to perfection- a bit on the saltier side, but try one of their 20 beers on tap to wash it down. The other burger we got was the Vavavoom- and for you mushroom and onion lovers- it's a must! Fries are delicious. Everything is in house made- down to the sauces (ketchup too!). Before leaving you NEED to get the sticky bun. Warm yummy moist and flavorful. The decor and layout is so thought out but so spunky. Staff makes you feel at home. Will come again if ever around the area that's a for sure! read more

This was one of the best burger places i have ever been to. The inside decor and choice of beers on tap and togo were top tier. I got the pickled pastrami with pastrami mustard sauce. This one was great concoction. Each bite tasted like bits of heaven... i washed it down with one of their very own stouts (the coffee vanilla stout). The service was excellent and they put little hidden art gems all throughout the restaurant. My girlfriend got vegetarian burger with all kinds of added extras to it. She fell in love with it and could barely fit the thing in her mouth it was so huge. We got garlic parmesan fries which were cooked to order and unbelievably good. I had a laugh at the restroom decor which was film/movie shots of actors on toilets. This was an experience not just a place to grab a bite to eat. The staff were super friendly and very accommodating. It's too bad it's so far away from Los Angeles, otherwise i would be here more often. Do yourself a favor and check it out at least once in ypur lifetime. read more
I will dream of going back here forever, everything about Yaks is phenomenal! We were greeted with genuine smiles, a simple instruction of how to order and laughter from all angles! First thing you notice is the decor, it's wild, it's crazy, it's fun and it's whimsical! The fidgets on the walls is brilliant, kids (and adults) finally have something to do while waiting in line, waiting for freshly prepared food or waiting for everyone to be done eating! Absolutely brilliant! The food, just like the decor and service, is over the top! It's over the top in the best way possible. Why have just a pastrami sandwich when you can pickle it, gourmet mustard it, garlic aioli it and present it all hot and cheesy? Divine, sublime and decadent I tell you!! Now, Scott's Tots had me wanting to be related to Scott, married to Scott or best friends with Scott, they were mouthwatering good!! Our beautiful server suggested a rib and smoked wing on top and she nailed it! Once again, over the top!! We had the pleasure of meeting Nancy and immediately became Yaks family! On each table is a little stand with paper and a question. My question was "What do you think YAKS stands for?" While we waited for our food, I filled it out, even added a couple little cartoons! My definition of YAKS is "You are kind souls". Little did I know, after meeting Nancy, that kindness is their number one requirement of all employees!! Heading to Oregon from the Bay, my friends were recommending Yak's so we had to give it a try. I had the Mr. Sexy with a Wing. Very good, very messy, very expensive burger. I opted for a wing instead of upgrading to fries. Wing was just ok, nothing special. Meal with a drink was over $30. Was our most expensive meal of our whole trip. Would we go back? I am so glad he suggested Yaks on 5! This spot is NOT TO BE MISSED! Seriously, the burgers are as big as your head!! And with combos you e never seen before - loaded with bacon, sauces, grilled onions, jalapeños, ooey , gooey meaty cheeses! Multiple patties and burgers of mind blowing height! The decor is funky and colorful and very alive. There's a diner/alternative/artsy vibe here with chandeliers and beads and old necklaces hanging in the windows. Very family friendly - playing oldies and country music. The fella that was taking orders is like a familiar uncle that is both boisterous and warm. The kind of man that laughs heartily without abandon and gives you a wink while calling out the orders. They have you pull a laminated strip of paper out of a can that has a funny title on it so you know when your order is up. We got "Single and ready to mingle". Funnily enough, my friend and I went in with the intention of ordering burgers. But we ended up getting a pastrami sandwich (mine) and the ribs plate (hers). We were NOT disappointed. My pastrami sandwich pictured here was bursting with flavor. There are two pastrami sandwiches on the menu and even a burger WITH pastrami on it too! I opted for the simpler pastrami sandwich. And while simpler in amount of ingredients (the other one has cheese and sauces on it) it was not SIMPLY a sandwich. Thinking about it now is actually making me crave it! It was delicious - I highly recommend it. Okay... the ribs. Guys... the ribs are incredible. Honestly I was so impressed because for a place that really specializes in their burgers, the two non burger items we ordered were top notch. The fries are also amazing. Nice and crispy with good garlic flavor that I was still tasting hours later. If you're ever driving north through this area in Dunsmuir - definitely make it a part of your trip. I had to try this burger joint because of the incredibly high Yelp ratings. The burger and fries combo was maybe the best I have ever had. The flavors on my "OMG Burger" were unusual and fabulous. The toppings included house/made lemon-ginger marmalade -- amazing flavor! Abby, the gal running the front room, had complete control of her domaine. She took orders, smiled, checked to make sure you loved your meal, smiled more, and was efficient, quick, and polite. This place will fill your gut with a heavy meal. The decor was entertaining to say the least. The building is old and has historic value. The location a few feet off the I-5 freeway is odd but convenient. 5-stars. Do they have any vegetarian or chicken options?
I believe chicken wings are available; a couple of all veggie salads and no-meat fries (the Scott's tots do include bacon). You can request a veggie patty in lieu of meat in any burger. Whatever you order, it's well worth it!
Does this cafe have any gluten free options?
I belive they do, burger wrap, sweet potatoes fries, there menu is online i believe....
Do you still offer salads, bbq and/or Buddha bowls?
Not at this location but at the YAKS Shack in Mt Shasta you can find both. Cheers....:) Neither currently have bbq...supply chain challenges.
Will you be closed on Christmas Day 2021?
We are not. Our staff enjoy their families on all major holidays. Merry Christmas to you and yours and drive safely it looks to be a bit slippery out their.
When are you guys closed?
I know they have gluten-free bread for sandwiches and GF buns for burgers, but does anyone know if the wings or fries are gluten-free? Looking to avoid cross-contamination and wondered if anyone has asked about a dedicated GF fryer.
Not 100% sure on Gluten Free fryer. I will say that their Salads are unbeatable and their dressings are great.

No, only cheese options are dairy cheese.
