I went to Bunna Cafe with some friends and had a great time! This was my first time trying Ethiopian food, and as a vegetarian I'll totally keep coming back. It was yummy, nutritious, and of course vegetable and legume oriented which I loved. The only thing that could've made the experience better would be if the music was a bit quieter, my friends and I had a hard time hearing each other over it. Really fresh and strong. Only critique is that portion sizes are small because I ordered the lunch special and had to make another meal at home which is a shame. It was $11 and I added an additional injera. I ordered the Enguday Tibs, Shiro, Misir Wot, and Yater Kik Alicha. Would come back online to try in person to see if there is a difference. I think this was only the second time I've eaten Ethiopian food, and both times it has been delicious. We ordered a feast for 3 and 3 orders of samosas for 6 people, which ended up being just the right amount of food. The samosas were delicious and so was the sauce that came with them. Out of the 9 items in the feast, I think 6 of them tasted amazing to me, but the others were not bad either. The injera on the side was very tasty and great for grabbing food, but the injera underneath got far too soggy that it made it difficult to eat with and also a bit unpleasant itself. I don't think I could eat here too often, but I would recommend people come here to try it, especially if they've never eaten Ethiopian food before. read more

It seems like every one of my reviews of an Ethiopian restaurants starts with "THIS is the best one I've been to". I admit it, I'm obsessed with Ethiopian food, and even when it's not amazing I'm still usually satisfied. BUT BUNNA CAFE IS TRULY SPECTACULAR. First, the Bunna Coffee. You HAVE to order it. The warm blend of spices concentrated into all of five gulps for me sent my head straight up to the stars. I cannot drink regular coffee from anywhere again. Pretty sure this is what the discovery of color television from watching black and white felt like. We went for brunch, so they didn't have the typical menu of injera and curries. I was very pleased to explore a side of Ethiopian cuisine I've never had before. (I had no idea that "Kita" - the same as a Malaysian puff paratha - is also eaten in Ethiopia). The two breakfast combos we ordered allowed us to try every side dish! Out of them all, the "Duba Firfir" was my favorite - tangy, sort of meaty tasting, and perfectly complemented by the cashew sauce. This is without a doubt the FRESHEST tasting Ethiopian food I've ever eaten. There was something about the flavors and colors that just popped. Great food spot, really wonderful value for the amount of food you get. Came here for dinner on a Friday night with another friend, this place had really high reviews and Ethiopian cuisine is always so fun since you get to use your hands so I was very much excited for it. We got the feast for 2 which comes with 8 different types of dishes on a huge injera and then there were rolls of injera bread that came with so you can grab the dishes to eat. The plate was HUGE! My friend and I couldn't finish everything. The flavors were each super unique. Everything was vegetarian so it was also quite healthy and there was plenty of greens! We also got a smoothie (but we got the three-flavored smoothie), I like that there was no sugar added. They also gave us soup on the house which was really sweet of them. Saturday afternoon, no wait at all for a table of two inside. Straightforward menu with classic Ethiopian dishes at reasonable prices. Plant based menu still has a lot to offer, especially for brunch. Settled on the Habesha Breakfast Combo ($18) and Special Ful Combo ($16) - basically one of pretty much everything they offer (aside from the choice of firfir). First off - the Kita bread is fantastic, very reminiscent of flaky paratha, just a little sweeter. Some other standouts include the Durban firfir (spicy but tempered by the cashew ergo) and the flavorful Ful. Wasn't a big fan of the Butecha, which was very dry, needing a lot of help from the other dishes. Service here is solid despite only one person manning the orders. The ambiance with the music combined well with the food. This was an incredible experience. I tried beyaynetu for the first time and lentil soup with ginger broth which had an intense flavor that you definitely wouldn't find commonly. Who knew vegetarian food could be so abundantly flavorful. The beyaynetu feast has a fusion of so many spices and vegetables. However, the injera ( Ethiopian flatbread) that accompanies the dish is tasteless and has an odd texture. I recommend getting the coffee; the taste is sharp. But let's get on with the review. When we entered we were one of the few people there- that's because they just opened. There was a lot of locals there (Ethiopian) who were sitting around the bar and it really felt like we were transported to another place. We were seated right away and given the menu and our water. The staff was very attentive and friendly and knowledgeable. We decided to go with the feast for 2 which included 2 portions of all the spreads they had. Everything is vegan/vegetarian I believe and it all tasted fresh and amazing. The spices that came with some of the spreads weren't overwhelming and you can tell the main ingredient in each spread. We also ordered some veggie pies? and a spiced flatbread. Overall everything was delicious and I highly recommend coming here. My first time ever having Ethiopian cuisine, learned about this place from VeganBodegaCat on YouTube. Walked in and the smell of coffee, which I do not drink, smelled amazing!!! I was almost tempted to order some! I instead ordered the Shai, iced, and it was good. Not overly sweetened but not bitter at all, you can really taste the cloves and cinnamon. Being that it was 2 of us, we decided on the Feast for 2 and that's when my love began. I'm not the pickiest eater but I don't always like EVERYTHING; however, I was blown away with the flavors! Bunna is an especially great restaurant for its cozy interior and prices that can't be beat. Everything on the menu is vegan. I'm always a fan of dining in groups so I can sample more food. My group of 8 shared 2 "Feasts for 3" which allowed us to try every hot and cold stew available on the menu. The Duba Wot (kabocha squash in spicy berbere sauce) and Shiro (ground split peas simmered in garlic and ginger) were definite highlights for me. We ordered several extra rolls of injera to soak up all the sauces and as the injera expanded in our stomachs we grew increasingly full. Second time here since my first visit back in 2018, and everything - food, ambiance, and service - was just as good as I'd remembered. We were a party of four and all arrived at different times due to traffic, but they were super accommodating. Everyone working there was very nice. They even had a DJ playing music. I hate to read y'all but I've about had it: Knowing what our traditional food is like when prepared with love, and how much it means to our community, i am embarrassed that this restaurant is considered authentic. Bunna has scaled back on quality over the years. The portions are a robbery. I can get miser wot in the DMV for $10 that could last me 2 days with enough injera. Why do the sauces come in ramekins like ketchup??? None of my leafy veggies were cooked thru and my lentils were crunchy. My shiro was pretty much hummus. The injera tasted like unsweetened chewing gum. Not an ounce of seasoning. I understand that we as immigrants choose to cut back on spices when operating in Caucasian neighborhoods. Kategna is a toasted Injera (sour pancake like thing) had a spicy, sour and slightly burned flavor, really interesting and tasty! We had the feast for two and it was too much for us, we took half of it home. So if you are two people, try the feast for one first because it will probably be enough. The prices are very affordable, you eat with your hands and the food is plant based. Both the Hibiskus and the Thyme-Ginger Iced Teas where delicious, they where not stingy with the herbs which I love! The highlight for me was the Baklava with coffee-infused-turbinato-syrup! I am glad they have so many options to customize your feast so you get to try all the different vegetables. I'd added Bunna Cafe to my list of restaurants on my list long ago, and after months of deprivation of good African food, my husband and I decided to order the feast for two ($38) from Bunna Cafe via UberEats. The order came in huge pizza box-like package with the nine different dishes in individual sides cups, along with the injera in a wax bag. The injera was tangy--more so than any I've ever had previously. The nine sides included gomen (collard greens), enguday tibs (cremini mushrooms), butecha selata (kale), shiro (ground split peas), keysir selata (beets), yater kik alicha (yellow split peas), misir wot (red split peas), yatakilt alicha (cabbage and potatoes), and a seasonal green bean dish. The vibe of this place is really unique, very chill ambience with a DJ playing music in the background. The decor is also pretty neat and trendy. You can order at a window and they have a simple outdoor setup where you can take your food. As a recent transplant to New York, and, more specifically, to Bushwick, I'm still trying to figure out what's good here. This place seemed to rank high everywhere I looked, so the roommate (who is a HUGE fan of this place) and I ordered the "Feast for Two" for take-out over the weekend. Since my roommate has had the "real" Bunna experience, she set up our feast as best as she could so I could have a close-to-authentic experience (pictured). Basically, she laid down the injera and then made two piles of each of the nine dishes. When you order as take-out, everything is given to you in a large pizza box, so this was our canvas. So, everything was good. However, I wasn't as BLOWN AWAY, as I feel like everyone else is about this place. Injera is whatever. It's spongy and I found it a little acidic tasting? The lentils in the Misir Wot and Yater Kik Alicha were a little hard for my taste (however, the flavor of the Misir Wot was delicious!). Maybe this is just how Ethiopians cook their lentils, but I prefer them a little softer. That being said, I really enjoyed the Butecha Selata, a limey kale salad with dried cranberries and what looked like a crumbly cheese, but because vegan, I assume was the "butecha." Additionally, I was a big fan of their seasonal dish--a saucy green beans thing (sorry for the uselessness of that). We also ordered a tea. I have no idea which one because when we called to place the order, my roommate just said "tea" and then "iced tea" and we got what we got. There was definitely hints of cardamom (my favorite) and ginger in it; plus, it was sweet, so my guess is the Ethiopiano. Highly recommend. Anyway, good place. It was pretty busy, so obviously people still love it.
