What's this? A good Chinese buffet in Austin? Umm, as long as you avoid the Chinese. Don't get me wrong: the Chinese food isn't bad, it's just that it's your standard Americanized-Chinese buffet fare: chicken, beef, and pork in cloyingly heavy sauces. They have some more upscale items, like salmon, but their upscale items get dried out after sitting under the heat lamps for a while, and aren't that great even if you get to them right as they're delivered. And they've got the usual stuff like pizza, for picky eaters who walked into a Chinese buffet but didn't want Chinese food. The freshness of the sushi isn't bad, for a buffet, but the rolls are 99 and 44/100% pure rice and .56% sushi. So why am I giving this place five stars? First of all, expectations are just lower at a buffet. But more importantly, the Korean food here is actually good. Multiple types of kimchi, bulgogi, soup, seaweed salad, jap chae, not to mention multiple variates of ceviche (including Korean octupus ceviche), plus a good selection of dumplings. If you just want one dish, you can do better for the same price at Korean Grill, Manna, Misung 888, New Oriental Market, Chosun Galbi, Shilla, Osaka Mansun, Odaku Sushi, or Korean Garden, but you can't beat the variety here. read more

Its a Chinese food orgy. Does anything else need to be said?? It huge, lots of seating, tons of options, kid friendly, great staff, and they have a sushi section. So its not gourmet but its a freaking buffet! The boys love this place and given the option they always pick Buffet Palace. The rice is not greasy. They have fresh grill veggies. The serving trays aren't very deep so that means the food is constantly being refilled. Like I said, they have sushi which is not a common sight at a buffet. They also have a decent selection of desserts. Some look like they picked it up from Costco but that's not to say it isn't good! I don't choose to eat at buffets anymore, but today I came for someone's birthday. I was surprised by the freshness and taste of most of the items. They have a wide range of sushi rolls, all of which are on the same level as HEB's. This was my first time to try bulgogi, and it was also good. I think the decor could use some work. I'll start off by saying our waitress Ana was very hardworking and showed a lot of hussle unlike the host up front who displayed how much they dislike their job with facial expressions and attitude towards customers. Now on to the reason this place is only 3 out of 5 stars to me. I've tried to approach it the healthy way, eating greens and fruit,,blahblahblah...but it just seems pointless. You're going to leave feeling like a whale. And possibly a sick one. According to Austin's newest restaurant guide, Buffet Palace failed three health inspections in a row before the book's publication. Seeing buffet-style sushi sitting for long periods of time, under lamps, it's not hard to figure out why. I can't always deny the gorge-association from the two large (fat) statues standing outside when I'm around Westgate, but if I need to take care of myself, I find it best to resist temptation. The best Chinese buffet in Austin. You know how sometimes you'll go into a buffet and you just get that feeling it's full of poorly-dressed, lower-class people? Well, I never get that feeling here. When it comes to sushi, I'm not the biggest fan, but I tried some of theirs and was impressed. Just remember to play it safe with sushi and if it doesn't look fresh, or the avocado looks oxidized, pass on it and/or wait for the sushi chefs to bring out the next fresh batch. Not bad for a buffet. Much more than I expected actually. Large selection of sushi, though nothing particularly stands out. I really wish they just had rolls of sashimi. The korean BBQ they have is excellent as is their crab. Lots of other typical asian buffet items (fried rice, potstickers, etc). The fried donuts and ice cream are pretty great way to finish off the night. The day we went was the birthdays of three of the guys and they even brought out a small band for happy birthday and decorated some plates with a slice of cake. I was a bit nervous suggesting Buffet Palace today for a late lunch. It goes against my suggestions from my own initial review. Adding to the drama, my friends wife who we were dining with is Asian. I think everything is premade and frozen and the restaurant heats it up, except the fresh fruit. All the egg rolls were identical, looked like frozen egg rolls and had little flavor. The breaded and fried chicken tenders (not even Chinese food!) were likewise a frozen food product. Baked salmon -- frozen. Glazed chicken -- frozen, no bones. I skipped the frozen french fries. Wonton soup -- I see how they do that: frozen wontons, pre-made chicken stock and some scallions. No Chinese flavors. This place is for overeaters. For the price, $17 not including hot tea, I could get a cooked Chinese meal at practically any established Chinese restaurant in Austin. This time the meal was mainly inedible and I could only stay 10 minutes and couldn't complete the meal. This is my mom's favorite restaurant in Austin, hands down. While this may be slightly more expensive than your typical Asian buffet, you can tell that most items are way above buffet quality. They have lots of Korean-inspired salads, not to mention Korean sliced pork, Korean BBQ (beef patties, sliced beef short ribs, pork), miso soup, and an amazing selection of sushi and dessert. If you're trying to avoid the standard buffet low quality items, avoid the stir fries and fried foods, though those aren't bad. In terms of Asian buffets, this place is pretty damn good. I mean, it's asian buffet food at it's core, so you need to know what to expect. This ain't top tier Asian food. Alot of deep fried stuff with sweet sauces. That said.... What they have here is pretty good. All the Chinese buffet staples are here. Not to greasy (but still greasy, haha). This stuff is alright and I wouldn't really come back for it though. It's standard. What's good is the Korean stuff. It's surprisingly good. All the kimchi's, salads and seafood salads were pretty nice. The short ribs and pancakes were pretty good too. The deserts had more variety than normal too, which I like. This review is relative to what this place is: an American-Chinese food buffet. What brings Buffet Palace up is the freshness of the food and I am sure this is primarily because of the heavy traffic. I have only been during workday lunches and "BP," as it is fondly referred to in my office, is always busy. During your time here you can almost always see each hot item being refreshed after running out, and you have to act fast to get any of the sushi before it disappears into one of the other patrons. Still, some of the salads feel like they have been sitting out a little too long and some of the less popular hot items should likely be replaced more often. Buffets usually have one other problem apart from freshness, which is bland food. Buffet Palace is not the most bland of any American-Chinese buffet, but some items do disappoint with lack of seasoning and being over or under salted. That said, there are generally a few items (the cold/salad pan fried tofu and the Sichuan chicken) that do stand out as being particularly flavorfull BP is good enough that I will visit every couple of weeks, but not good enough that I could become a true regular. I appreciate that most things are labeled with food allergy/vegetarian markings, and the staff is generally helpful and friendly. This is the only buffet I've gone to in Austin, because I have not heard great things about most of the others. We went on Sunday afternoon and I think we overlapped with the post-church crowd... so it was super packed, basically every table was taken, and there were people everywhere. The food was all good... no complaints about any of it; everything was seasoned well. It was a cut above most buffets I've gone to. Plus, despite the crowd, there was plenty of food in each serving tray. I also appreciated the atmosphere... the space has high ceilings and is modern in style. Nothing was overtly gross; I can overlook a scuffed floor. Service was ok. Our server was friendly but didn't stop by our table much toward the end of our meal... we had to ask him for the check. My only substantial issue was the price - about $40 including the buffet for two and drinks. Kinda insane. If you're just in the mood to pig out, go here. But if you're looking for some delicious food, don't go here lol. My family and I like to go here when we're starving . The service isn't very interactive because it doesn't need to be but they clean off your table in a timely manner so that you can get up and grab some more food haha. After getting a Groupon deal ($11 for $20 Worth) for Buffet Palace, we decided to give it a shot even though we are not fans of Buffet-style eateries. Upon pulling into the parking lot, it immediately felt a bit ghetto and run-down with some sketchy characters hanging out in the back back part of the lot. The fact that the outside of the Buffet Palace building looks ok, we hoped the interior was up to par with the exterior. As we got inside, I noticed there was a host who took us to our table but the price board was small and far behind the booth which I thought was a bit sketchy but decided to press forward. After being seated I noticed the tables, chairs, floors and walls were beat up and in poor condition. Our wooden booth seats were sticky and just seemed over-used. They could really use remodeling and a make-over. At this point I was really worried that if the outside, inside and furniture was sub-par then the food might be just as disappointing. However I must say, the food selection and quality was good. Not to say it was fantastic, but it was definitely better than some of the other buffet-style places I've been to. While nothing was great, nothing was terrible either. It's not common to be able to eat Chinese, Japanese and Korean in once place and for one price. The Fried Rice and Noodles from the Chinese section was surprisingly good. The Sushi was a bit disappointing as the outside rice of the rolls were getting hard, which means it's wasn't fresh (dangerous for Sushi). As for the Korean section, it was just ok but specifically disappointed in the Short ribs, Bulgogi and Kimchi as these are my favorite selections when we eat Korean BBQ. The desert selection was decent but not having ANYTHING chocolate ruined it for me. I settled for some Jello and Ice Cream. Overall, while not impressed with the experience, I also wasn't angry. I didn't expect anything great from a buffet, so that kind of saved the meal.
