Checked out this staple spot today for lunch! It's directly across the street from IU Bryan Hall. There's some seating outside and then tons of seating inside. I've always loved their sub sandwiches for the bread, which was flaky and crispy on top like a real baguette. I ordered a sub last week for the first time in a few years, and they've totally changed the bread and now it looks tastes like Jimmy John's or Jersey Mike's bread, which is not great. I decided to go with the classic bone-in buffalo wings as a litmus test. The wings were pretty decent, but sort of small. Visited Buffa Louie's when I went to Bloomington for the first time. I heard good things and I love boneless wings so I was excited. My first impression was it was pretty small. There were lots of TVs and games on so the vibe was more stay a while and watch the games. However, I do not feel like they had the room for this. You order at the counter then they call your name when the food is ready. I feel like this went well but I do like a traditional restaurant better than this. Still took a while to get the food, which was fine because there were a lot of people there. I did not really love the fried pickles. The first couple were good but then you could tell they had an off taste. I think it was the oil. Wings were delicious but nothing super special. I would go back here again when I'm craving wings. This place is always a 10/10! It's usually packed when we are here. It's located super close to the Sample Gates, and super close walking distance to a lot of great shopping. I always get the "sweet q" sauce, which is unlike any other sauce I've had. It's like a sticky, gooey, molasses bbq sauce that's good with everything. The tots are always great, and I love that a regular size drink comes in a take home cup. We have a small collection of them in our cabinet at home now. Stepping into the restaurant is like going back in time; vintage IU merch, Indiana sports memorabilia, and a plethora of pennants and banners hanging from the ceiling. This would be a perfect place to hang out with friends and enjoy a basketball game (another Indiana icon!) Every waiter/waitress I encountered was incredibly friendly and attentive. Example: I was taking off the lid to my drink, and before it was even fully off the cup, a waiter offered to throw the trash away for me Example 2: a waitress with a tray full of food held the door for me while balancing the orders. While Buffa Louie's is famous for their wings, the meatball sandwich, tater tots, and mozzarella sticks were also delicious. I know it sounds impossible considering Buffa Louie's is a traditional American bar, but the meatballs tasted like they came from a quality Italian restaurant! The tater tots were crispy and salty, and the mozzarella sticks were a great appetizer. If you're always on the lookout for deals (like I am!), Buffa Louie's has a rewards program and daily specials. I had been told by some friends to visit this place on several occasions so when my son played in a soccer tourney at Karst Park, it only made sense to go. We went on a Saturday afternoon, just before a big football game. The place was HOPPING. They do such a great job of filling such a small place with a ton of tables. There was IU memorabilia all over the walls, and unique places to sit, such as benches from a loft area overlooking the room. We waited in line quite a while and it took about 25 minutes to get our food. I ordered a grilled chicken sandwich and my friends ordered wings (which I had heard they were famous for!) and curly fries. We all agreed to share and I'm sure glad we did. The Hoosiers football team finally makes a significant advancement in the college football season, so we came to BuffaLouie's watch the game and they shut down at 10 PM making people leave before the end of the game. Walked past this restaurant after work, on my way to my car, and thought wings sounded good, so I stopped in. I never had their wings before, seemed like a good time to try them. I ordered 10 traditional buffalo wings, 5 medium, 5 mild, to test them out, and celery and blue cheese - traditional order, nothing fancy, just to get a sense of the place. Took them home, opened my order, and thought there must have been some mistake or mix-up. Small, hard, dry, no sauce. Aren't buffalo chicken wings supposed to be saucy? I called up, thinking there must be some mistake, told them I got a carry out order and what I found when I got home. It wasn't a mistake. I was told that's just how they are. I said isn't there supposed to be sauce? I was told they absorb the sauce f they sit. But they didn't have much flavor, so I don't think they absorbed a lot of sauce, and they were hard and dry. I was told I could come back and get some more sauce if I wanted. Did I want to drive back downtown for some sauce, reader? No. No, I did not. I wanted my wings to be saucy and juicy and of reasonable size, not hard and dry and small, and spending half an hour on a sauce run wasn't going to fix that. The whole thing was really confusing. How could this place possibly be famous for wings? How could Buffa and Lou possibly be in the name with a product worse than a frozen box of wings from the store or a side of wings from a pizza restaurant? I was incredulous. No, I was not going to "have a wonderful evening". I was just stunned, so I said I guess I will just post on Yelp. And here it is. I ate a few of the hard, dry wings, not much there, just threw the rest in the garbage. Celery and blue cheese was ok. I made a trip out to Bloomington to try out a few restaurants here! The food strip is long and the variety of food is huge! The reason that this place caught my eye was because I heard about their burgers. I cannot resist buffalo chicken anything, First off, the tables were sticky. A gross sticky, and it seemed like the bar that we sat at was wiped, but not cleaned well. They were pretty packed inside, but it was definitely a little chilly to be sitting outside on the patio tables. it was crazy that even with social distanced tables, it still felt really crammed. The cleanliness was something that is very important to me. But, the food? That's another story: Go for the burgers! I got the Gale burger filled with avocado and the patties were delicious. Coated well, little on the salty side, but I think I was really craving a burger like that. Had the crispy tater tots as well, can't go wrong with those! The buffalo mac n cheese, I would not order again. I am not a fan of bleu cheese, so I think it was coated a little too strongly with bleu cheese for my liking. If you like bleu cheese, go for it! Not a bad side. The other item pictured is the Buffalo Crispy Chicken Sandwich, definitely satisfies any craving if you need a good buffalo chicken kick!
