We had been planning to try this place out as it's 3 min from our new home. We arrived at approx 5 pm and seated immediate. There were 2 other tables being serviced at this time it was empty. Server brought over our iced teas which was the first issue. Looked like dark colored orange juice and tasted sour. Unsure what it was exactly. When asked for something else to drink she offered to make fresh ice tea as that one might have been old. We declined and ordered soda. We then ordered stuffed mushroom portabello but were then informed they were out. Steak salad ordered with ribeye my steak was full of fat. Literally could not eat. Salad was drounded in dressing kale and dressing no apples no walnuts nothing else it should have come with. Such a disappointment. read more

Decided to try Verdugo's for Valentine's Day wanting a quality steak dinner. Arrived to a dining area that was just a bunch of tables in an open area with no table cloths and very basic. It took around 15 minutes for our server to come over and that was ok, we ordered drinks, fried calamari and oysters Rockefeller for appetizers and two Old Fashioned cocktails. The cocktails arrived quickly but we waited another 20 minutes before the calamari arrived. Calamari was over cooked and chewy. 15 more minutes before the oysters Rockefeller arrived which were very average. In the meantime, who I believed to be the owner or manager was walking around vacuuming. The ambiance was very weak, like an unfinished remodel. At this point we decided to go somewhere else. The owner/manager came by and asked how everything was and we were honest with him. When the waitress came by we asked for our bill. $100 for this?? She seemed oblivious to our disappointment. Had the privilege of coming here the night after the grand opening. Parked at El Taco since parking is a lil tricky, but they didn't seem to mind. Making a reservation on Opentable was a breeze and they saw who I was and sat me right away even though I was early. It is apparent there is a lot of thought in the dishes and they are very flavorful. The lobster bisque had nice chunks of lobster on top. It was a slower night so the food came out super quick which was a pleasant surprise for something like a high quality steak (it was very thick). All the sides held their own and the desserts were on point. Service-wise it's obvious there's a lot of heart here. The owner Ralph checks in more than once making sure everything is good with all the tables. The server Jailene is very amicable and passionate about the menu. Sam comes in every half an hour or so to sing and adds a nice show to the dinner (we're talking powerful notes). The duet she sang with a little girl was extra touching at the end. This is a place to take someone you care about and have a nice time. The pricing is upscale because of the ambience and quality. It is definitely a special occasion worth having. read more

We went in this past Saturday and let me tell you! The food was delicious! We ordered the Wedge Salad and it hit so good! We then had to Filet Mignon with a side of Brussel Sprouts! It was hands down the best steak I have ever had. I put the oil/chili sauce they give you with the complementary bread they give you on my Steak. It's a decent place. It is overpriced. They were attentive to our party's needs. We were a party of 6, the gratuity was included in the bill. The menu is a bit weird. I asked the waitress if the scallops come alone? She said it did so I ordered a side of garlic mashed potatoes. When I received my plate I noticed the 4 scallops came with risotto. The plate was $49 for scallops and $13 for the garlic mashed potatoes. Nothing special or memorable about their food. They have music. The other issue was parking. They have plenty of parking;however, a uhaul 20 inch truck parked in the middle of the parking lot preventing cars to be able to get out without hitting the truck. It should be the parking lot for the restaurant but appears it is being shared with other business. The establishment is attempting to be a high end but the food does not meet the standards. The inside looks like it would be better suited for a bar and grill type of restaurant, not a steak house. Mind you, the prices for the steaks are not cheap. They taste really good though. The food was amazing and cooked to perfection! Wide variety of prime steak cuts and sides. The owner personally greeted us and gave us a special drink to toast the occasion -- it was the best "old fashioned" I ever tasted. They added special ice to each glass...one in the shape of a flower and the other in the shape of the heart. Oh and, one of the servers performs live music, she has the voice of an angel! The service was pretty awful. We had to wait for a hour before they asked us for drinks and manager was busy speaking with clients to be aware of overcrowding of walks in. Everyone was on edge and frustrated about being seated down. They finally stop accepting walks in; when one of the guest got pretty upset and asked for a manager to complain. They offer free drinks and that made the woman even more angry and left. My valentine date was pretty annoyed! The food was meh okay maybe next time stop accepting walks in, to make matter worse the comedy started late. As I sat there I could see others experiencing the same service as us some even getting up and leaving! 20 mins later we were finally allowed to order our steaks but again waited another 35mins for our dinner!! 11pm 2 hours of horrible service and sitting waiting to be acknowledged! Attended this establishment on Sunday 8/11 and ordered some oysters and NY strips. The oysters arrived and tasted bitter. Did not think much of it so I decided to judge based on the NY strip. We ordered 2 NY strips, one came out right away and the other was forgotten about. The forgotten NY strip arrived 10 minutes later, blue rare. LUNCH is Open!!! We were very excited to hear that Verdugo's opened for lunch so we could get a nice lunch date in between work, without the kiddos. I had GRILLED OCTOPUS which was Amazing! Just like served at the sister restaurant Buena Mesa. Husband got the FILET MIGNON which he thought was great. The BEEET SALAD and LOBSTER MASHED POTATOES were different so we had to try them. They were great. Very flavorful! Our server, Zoey, was very attentive and asked if it was our first time here. She went over the menu without us having to ask her. We appreciate that. We are so happy that VERDUGO's is finally open up here in Downey, and look forward to going here for Date Night instead of having to go farther. We ordered drinks right away and then ordered our meal shortly after (we mentioned to the server we had to be somewhere by 8). My wife's drink arrived about 30 minutes later and mine about 5 minutes after that. After over an hour wait without anyone checking on us, we asked for the manager. Several tables that came in after us had gotten their food and were eating. We were told the manager was busy and that our food would be another 40 minutes (since they had a lot of orders in). We asked if there really was a manager and the server pointed her out. Finally the manager, Blanca, came over and had no idea what was happening. We left without dinner. There isn't any alcohol there Done the wine storage clicks unfinished as well. You should make that wine collection on the wall a wine cooler with glass in front and temperature control inside to hold the bottles. It would be a great focal point for the restaurant. The outside with the white tablecloths and chairs looks incomplete as well would at least plant it or color it up with something I'm sure you're not done with that either I know this all takes revenue but if you don't get off to a nice start, you're going to be in big trouble quickly. read more

I went on a date here for Valentine's Day. We took a little while to get seated, but I really appreciated the communication from our waiter. They informed us it may take a bit longer than usual and I really appreciated the manager walking over to apologize for the "long wait". It was really just 20 minutes, and they were really packed. The service was so sweet and considerate of their guests. I had the garlic shrimp and white rice. It was delicious! I also had a couple glasses of the Bread & Butter champagne and it was so good. I came in at 8pm on a Tuesday date night looking forward to a great experience at this new local steakhouse but unfortunately my night did not end as good as it started. It wasn't even a busy night. The Drinks are good, food is good but service needs work. Everything was great from the beginning, got some good recommendations on drinks (Downey girl is fire) and we got an order of calamari and some sides to share along with our main meal. I ordered a lobster Mac and cheese along with mashed potatoes, truffle fries, steak, and chicken piccata. Our waiter repeated the order to us to make sure everything was right. When he brought out the Mac and cheese we realized it was not lobster Mac and cheese, it was plain Mac and cheese. We brought it to our waiters attention and he insisted it was our error? He had repeated the order and confirmed it was lobster Mac and cheese so how was it our fault? Instead of correcting it right away he kept saying that's what we ordered before he ended up taking it back and bringing us our correct side. This caused us to lose our appetite and we couldn't continue enjoying our food. The chicken piccata and sides were delicious but unfortunately I had to take it to go. Our waiter did not try to make the situation right, he delivered our Mac and cheese and disappeared. Christian the busser came up to us and apologized for something that was not his fault. He heard us out and apologized for the poor experience we had. Christian went above and beyond to try to rescue the night. Christian was the highlight of the night. Service was 1/5 Food 4/5 Drinks 4/5 I'll give this restaurant some time to work on their issues before thinking of returning. read more

One of my favorite go-to spots is this place. The food is incredible, the service is top-notch, and the ambiance is simply amazing. The owner makes you feel like family once you step inside. He went out of his way to greet us, thank us for stopping by, and even asked how we enjoyed the food and service. My favorite dish is the bone-in ribeye.
