We visited LA from Sacramento over the weekend for an epoxy class down the street and decided to have a birthday dinner at this location. Food was AMAZING! We ordered prime rib stuffed with cheese, onion, and shrimp. Drizzled over with their zarandeado sauce (I personally don't like blue cheese so the zarandeó sauce was the replacement sauce.) Filet mignon with garlic mashed potatoes Along with their fresh ceviche bedded on raw oysters. EVERYTHING WAS TO DIE FOR. The owner was down to earth and very friendly. I called on 03/21 @12:08pm & spoke with JoJo. I made a Reservation for a party of 6 @5pm for a Birthday dinner on 03/28. When we arrived, there were no tables set up and the hostess acted like she had no clue about our reservation. She seemed frazzled as she tried to put 3 tables & 8 chairs together for us. My wife ordered the boneless ribeye with mashed potatoes. The mashed potatoes were bland, and the ribeye was over-seasoned, tough, and quite fatty. The seafood tower was good, as was my daughter's ceviche and my shrimp, but overall the experience fell short. And the music was extremely loud for being such a small establishment. Penelope, was excellent--very attentive and pleasant throughout the meal. When we received our bill, we were charged 20% for a "Large Party" of 8, but did not notice this error until we returned home. We will not be returning. read more

This establishment used to be Marie calendars. The boy is out of the hospital so off to eat steak we go! It is a weekday around 530 pm and only one other couple here. Boy had the filet mignon it does not come with any sides which is perfect for him. He was so animated when he had the first bite. His exact words" what!!? It's so juicy and perfectly seasoned. I had a bite and yes he was not exaggerating That was a good quality great tasting piece of meat. I ordered a shrimp cocktail for myself which hit the spot. It had some nice heat to it. I was completely caught off guard. I think most of these reviews were for the previous restaurant called Verdugo's. The pictures displayed were more of a steakhouse type of restaurant when I arrived with my family we walked straight into a busy dinning area. While it was very promising, the menu was very different than what was displayed on Yelp. In fact, most of the menu was seafood. In the corner they had a Juan Gabriel impersonator while he sang well, it was incredibly loud and not what we expected. We asked for a table near the back since we had our four year old with us. A waiter pulled two tables together for our party and passed another 10 minutes before we were approached for drinks. We waited about about 10 for him to return for our order but no drinks. When he came back we asked to cancel them since our daughter was having trouble with the loudness of the music being sung. The rest of our party stayed but sent back their food. The camarones zarandeados tasted like nothing but mayo and the rice was not cooked entirely throughout. Definitely would not return. read more

I ordered the chicken plate and it was a bit dry even though it was slathered with a bright yellow sauce that was not mentioned on the menu. The macaroni and cheese was good I was looking at two places for brunch and accidentally picked the wrong one because o thought they had a brunch menu. My mistake. Ambiance? The food & cocktail: delicious 10/10. Our table ordered filet mignon, NY steak, Ribeye and Verdugo's Special Salad. You need to add sides (only small steaks get mash potatoes). But we added Brussel sprouts and fingerling potatoes. All of that made such a flavor combo I will be dreaming about for a long time. My New York steak was perfection. I've been wanting to try this restaurant for a while since I live nearby and heard good reviews. We were not disappointed! The louis jacot was amazing if you like sweeter white wine! We ordered the filet mignon and bone-in ribeye steak with a side order of their mac & cheese and loaded lobster mashed potatoes. It was absolutely perfect- they were not stingy with the lobster on the mashed potatoes and their blue cheese dip for the steak was amazing! Both the steaks were tender and cooked to perfection! Came to the restaurant to celebrate my mom's birthday. When we mentioned we had a reservation the waitress at the time said there was no reservations on file. She then attempted to accommodate us, but then wanted to stick all members of the party in a booth and not a table. The restaurant used to be Verdugos Steak House, so I had a steak thinking they would be as good as the old restaurant I was wrong. The meat was extremely fatty, and the meat was overly seasoned with salt. The amount of food given is not worth the prices they are charging at all. The waitress could not even hear us due to having loud music blaring through the entire dinner experience. I celebrated my birthday a week ago at Verdugos! I live in Las Vegas and have read so many amazing reviews regarding their service, food & vibe! So headed to Calie for my celebration! Upon arriving there was easy parking (that's already a plus!) as we walked up front to enter there was a cute lil upfront patio set up. Walking into the entrance we were automatically greeted by the host and sat rather quickly. We were sat handed menus and drink menus, I ordered a couple of their significant drinks (polma & Downey girl) which was DELICIOUS! We ordered the garlic rice and shrimp which was AMAZING & their NY steak! The steak was cooked perfectly and the taste was to DIE for! The owner I believe his name is Ralph came and checked on us to make sure we were being taken care of which I felt he went the extra mile ! The ambiance could use some improvement, it is kind of dark in there, the AC wasn't on even though is the middle of July and pretty hot so the air felt like it could use some circulation. We ordered Rib Eye, chicken piccata, for sides we had fries, stuffed mushrooms, sweet shrimp, mushroom ragú and mashed potatoes. For drinks we had a glass of red wine and the pineapple mezcal drink. The rib eye could've used more searing, seasoning and the fat wasn't rendered so it was hard to cut. The shrimp was a bit overcooked, the chicken seemed like it could've been the kind that you get frozen, with the grilled marks, it was dry on the inside but the sauce was really good. Solid steakhouse with exciting alcoholic beverages. Came in on a Friday night and it was busy but we made reservations prior. Friendly service throughout the night. Very casual vibe. A waitress sang a couple songs. That was really cool. We shared their sweet and spicy shrimp which were really tasty. Also shared a caesar salad and we enjoyed it. I was really excited to hear that Downey had a new sit down steak restaurant. Took mom and dad out for a late birthday dinner for dad. Upon looking at the menu online, it was pretty much on par to what you would expect prices to be at an upscale steak house. I was expecting something like Del Rae down the street in Pico Rivera or Steak and Stein in Whittier Blvd. First thing I noticed upon entering, was the display case full of desserts. Kind of like I walked in to Marie Callendar's. It was pretty empty when we first got seated so we were able to snag a booth in the back with a full view of the restaurant. It said online that on certain nights, the restaurant has live music. What was odd to me was that the bar was situated around the corner, far away from where the live music was supposed to be. So if you're just there for a couple drinks, you're not able to enjoy the performance unless you're seated in the dining area. There's a bar set up right when you come in they the front door but it's currently empty and not being utilized. So if you're waiting for a table, you would need to walk thru the entire restaurant to get to the bar in the back to grab a drink. As for the food, our server, although extremely nice and attentive, wasn't very knowledgeable about the menu. The steaks on the menu did not list how many ounces each cut was. We had a difficult time figuring out the menu because we all wanted to get different cuts without ordering too much and sharing the sides. Our server kept going to the BOH to ask questions. It would be extremely helpful if the size of the steaks is listed on the menu. My dad opted for the Ribeye and mom and I shared the Tomahawk with a caesar salad to share, garlic mash and mac and cheese. All were delicious. The kitchen was nice enough to cut a piece for mom and cook it to her medium well. Everything was delicious. Food was cooked to temp and my parents were impressed. As for drinks, I ordered a glass of house wine. It was listed on the menu as Josh merlot, the server assured me that it was in fact, a cab. When I took a sip, I noticed that it didn't taste like a cab but more like a pinot noir. I then ask the server if she was sure that she poured me the house wine. She then admits that they ran out of the house red and that she "upgraded me". I decided not to comment on it further but certain guests may potentially make a big deal of it. Then comes to the desert part. Our server was nice enough to let us know that the selection in the window wasn't fresh and she wouldn't recommend it besides the creme brûlée. I was surprised that they didn't offer a free dessert for bdays. Those little things count. I feel like I need to mention that I have worked in the restaurant industry for about 20 years in various positions from server to bartender to management. All of these opinions are my own and observations that I hope will help. This restaurant has great potential with a couple things that just need to be tweaked. So much to say about this place but I want to start with the owner - Ralph Verdugo is amazing. 10/10 owner but even better of a person. This man cares about his community so much and cares about his customers even more. The friendliest, kindest man who just so happens to also run an amazing establishment! The vibes of the steakhouse are great - live music, great quality steak for a fair price, and delicious drinks! I recommend the ribeye, truffle fried, and Downey girl! Side note: Ralph hosted a dinner for 7 senior couples from Downey - took care of their whole meal, including appetizer salad, steak, dessert, and drink - all because he wanted to show appreciation to the senior community. I have had the pleasure of dining here probably half a dozen times. The thing that keeps bringing me back here is the Japanese A5 Wagyu!!! The pros at Verdugos: 1) This fine dining establishment is open during lunch. Always a positive as I hardly do dinners. 2) They have Japanese A5 Wagyu available during lunch! 3) King Crab legs are soo meaty! 4) Service is impeccable. Blanca, Sandra helped me the first few times. Bryant took care of our group the past 3 times. Love the attention to detail front and kitchen staff put towards a great customer experience! 5) Espresso Martini's are delicious! We probably have 3 too many every time during our visit. 6) Desserts are delicious. Tiramisu is my favorite. 7) Appetizers are portioned adequately. Brussels Sprouts is very good and the best of the pick. 8) One of the employees that works Thursday's and the weekends (Samantha?) has an amazing voice. As soon as she is caught up on her tables, she busts out a romantic song for everyone to enjoy. Unique to this restaurant. Cons: -I did not like the taste of the Oyster Rockefeller.
