Mushrooms weren't overly mushy and good flavor and texture. Gruyère cheese brought a lovely salty, cheesy flavor. Overall, okay, but not great. Arugula wilts and it was tough to eat after I reheated it in the toaster oven. I was advised to reheat the danish in the toaster oven before consuming, which I did. DUBAI PISTACHIO CHOCOLATE CROISSANT Rich and very pistachio-forward flavor! This was done well! Tasted like dubai chocolate in croissant form. However, the croissant was not as crispy and was on the softer side. Crispy kataifi on top brought that crispy texture. Savory unsweetened pistachio custard. The sweetness came from the chocolate drizzle over the croissant and the kataifi. Overall, enjoyed it! CHOCOLATE PECAN PRESSED CROISSANT Crispy, crunchy, flaky, buttery, caramelized layers! It does remind you of a flattened more crispier, buttery palmier and maybe even a mille feuille! The plain pressed croissant tasted like caramelized sugar with a buttery flakiness from the croissant. The chocolate pecan side was delicious with dark chocolate and crunchy pecans on top of that buttery, flaky, crispy pressed croissant! Recommend! 8 PCS ASSORTED MINI CHOUX SET You choose what flavors you want. I chose the following. Black Sesame Hoijicha - Strong hojicha flavor right off the bat! I barely taste the black sesame, except when you eat the black sesame paste at the top of the cream puff. When you bite into the whole cream puff, you only get the hojicha flavor. Very good and if you're a hojicha lover, you won't regret getting this! Taro Salted Egg Yolk - A new flavor that was added recently. You can taste the taro on top and the salted egg yolk on the bottom when eaten separately. But when eaten together, depending on where your tongue hits, you get more taro or salted yolk. Choux pastry is crunchy. This was delicious and definitely a repeat order too! I asked the owner and they will continue with this new flavor for now. They did not have the Koyamaen Matcha, when I purchased it via HotPlate. They ran out of it when I went to pick-up at the bakery, so they offered a refund or to replace with another mini choux. They brought back the Maple Pecan with Dark Chocolate Coating as a temporary replacement for the Koyamaen Matcha. But I opted for another Taro Salted Egg Yolk. Classic 64% Chocolate, Lemon Delight, Signature Biscoff Crunch were my other mini choux orders. All consistently delicious and done well. Please see my previous review on these flavors. RASPBERRY, ROSE & LYCHEE CROIFFIN This new edition was not part of Hotplate. I had to order it separately in-store. But wow, this was absolutely delightful! The cream had a pink color with swirls of raspberry compote and there were pieces of real lychee inside! The rose flavor was not overpowering, but complemented both the raspberry cream. The croiffin was flaky, crispy and buttery! This is my new favorite, very good and well done! I will continue to order this as long as it is available! JAPANESE BLACK SESAME CREAM TOP Love all things black sesame. So had to order this! This took a bit of wait time, much longer than expected. This was a simple latte style iced coffee with black sesame cream top. You can taste the coffee, but there was also milk in it, so it was a milkier coffee. Once you mix the black sesame cream top, all you can taste is the black sesame. So yes, it is a strong black sesame flavor in this drink. It was good, but not great to order for the second time. I found Browned tucked inside a mixed-use retail apartment complex. You really have to know it is there or you might walk past it! It is a bakery from Macau that focuses on crispy cream puffs that aren't too sweet. They come in unique flavors like Earl Grey, green tea, blueberry, and Dong Ding Oolong. I grabbed their six piece cream puff set for my first visit, as I wanted to try out more flavors at once. Luckily for me, I got some of the last few items as the owner explained that they tend to sell out. The puffs run a bit smaller than what you might expect from other competitors; however, it didn't deter me. The spot does not have a lot of seating aside from a few barstools, so you might have to plan for that. Once I got my cream puffs, the texture is what got me. The crispy outside gives a nice crunch when you bite in, then you get hit with soft cream filling that is "not too sweet". With clean flavors that come out without any artificial aftertaste, I really enjoyed what I had. The owner comes from Hong Kong as she used to run a bakery there as well before this. If you have the chance to talk with her you'll see how much she loves what she does. She lit up when asked about the flavors and shared a couple quick stories about her time there. Super friendly. Anytime I'm back in the area, I want to try a new bakery. Browned, a new coffee/pastry spot in the heart of San Gabriel. The pastries won me over more than the coffee. Known for their cream puffs, they all looked great making it hard to choose. Personal favorite was the lemon curd, but the Biscoff and Black Sesame were also crowd favorites. The Pistachio cream top coffee was good but was hoping for it to be a little sweeter. Don't know if we caught them on an off day, but it was a long wait. They were working on a big order and only two people on staff. Small seating both indoors and outdoors so recommendation is to take it to go. Incredible croissants, but slower service in this small bakery. The black truffle mushroom danish was exceptional. We came back twice for this specifically. Some imaginative combinations like kimchi bacon garlic roll continue to impress us. For once, the cream puffs tasted exactly as advertised. The black sesame hojicha flavor was bold. Taro salted egg yolk cream was real taro and you can feel the mealy, starchy texture. The tamest flavor was the vanilla bean, and I would say that was most traditional as well. The drinks were okay, felt like a sale of convenience rather than an area of focus. The espresso was more sour than I'm used to, and closer to Korean coffee shops. Kept wanting to try this bakery and everytime I had time it was on a day they were closed! Finally came on an open day but towards the end of the day so selections were slim. I really wanted to try the croissant cookie dipped in chocolate but they ran out. So I settled for the regular one with nothing. It was pretty much a pressed croissant nothing special that stood out. They make the same thing at Disneyland but with a churro coating and a chocolate filled one. But anyways, what stood out were them cream puffs. At 6 for $30 they better be good! And they were! So decadent and the fillings were rich and luscious! The cream puff shell was like a cookie, crispy. Super delicious, fun flavors, would highly recommend. Service was smooth, no wait, and there's plenty of parking in the plaza. Flavors I tried include oolong, Biscoff, vanilla, matcha, lemon, blueberry, dark chocolate, and maple pecan. If I had to pick three, I'd go with oolong, matcha, and the signature Biscoff. I got 8 crème puffs for $30. These aren't your typical Beard Papa-style puffs; they're more delicate and refined. Social media hyped up the choux, but it didn't quite live up to it for me. Unfortunately, the vanilla bean choux missed the mark for me. The crust lacked that signature crunch, and the filling didn't have a distinct vanilla bean flavor. Instead, it tasted just like the standard whipped cream you get at a traditional Asian bakery cake. On the bright side, the Dubai chocolate croissant was incredibly flaky and crunchy. While I enjoyed the pastry itself, I wished it had more kataifi and less pistachio cream; the cream was so thick that it was actually a bit hard to swallow. Cute lil' mini choux bakery / cafe in a quiet corner under an apartment complex ~ I actually came here to try the Kimchi Bacon Garlic Roll W / Runny Egg Yolk and the Black Truffle Mushroom Danish, but both were out of stock when I got there about an hour before closing. My heart was broken so I just got a couple minis instead. They were running low, but I was able to try the Taro Salted Egg & Taiwanese Oolong Tea. I actually enjoyed the Taro Salted Egg because the cream inside the pastry felt more substantial in comparison to the Taiwanese Oolong Tea option. The Oolong flavor was really not very sweet at all, and was filled with something similar to a whipped cream which felt a little too airy and plain to me. The Taro Egg was both savory and sweet, I recommend you try this one if you're into anything salted egg ~ Both mini choux had a nice crust so the textures were enjoyable. Anyway, the area outside the cafe is so cute, I plan to return to Browned soon just so I can sit there and enjoy the savory baked goods I previously mentioned. So turns out this is very close to a friend's house and we were able to walk here (along with various other establishments on Valley). Its a cute, newer bakery that really is just intended for a buy and go with some outdoor seating space. They have an assortment of pastries and coffees and are known for their cream puffs. We got there kind of late in the afternoon so various flavors were sold out but got one of each of the remaining flavors (vanilla, dark chocolate, maple cream, matcha, and biscoff). I enjoyed every one of them and thought they had a really nice balance of flavors and sweetness. None were overly sweet and the flavors were all subtley pronounced, which sounds like a paradox but best way I can think to describe it. The choux pastry was well done with a nicely textured crackelin top. The cream filling held up nicely (once returned to the fridge for a bit as we were walking around for an hour or so after getting them). The price seems a bit steep at ~$4 each but the quality and execution is there for me and also, we're in LA so ehh. This was a great new stop for me and I'm already considering returning so I can try more pastries and get the oolong cream puff. Parking is straightforward if familiar with the area. There's a couple nearby underground parking garages. Fortunately, I quickly found a parking spot. Staff is very professional, welcoming, and friendly. Staff maintained a bright, cheery demeanor throughout this experience. Staff also eagerly answered all my questions. Staff worked hard. This location would get very busy in small, sudden waves. My drink took three minutes and 30 seconds. Good time! As mentioned, I ordered the Housemade Pistachio Cream Top Coffee ($7.90 - Iced). Staff recommended that I drink from their special straw. With each sip, I felt more and more happy. This iced coffee had a milky, nutty, and caramelized flavor profile. It's velvety, chill, and smooth. The caffeine is not punchy; rather, there's a reserved yet enduring caffeine/coffee flavor. As I continued to drink, I felt the familiar welcomed stretch of energy. Its Pistachio Cream Top also elevates this fresh brew. It blossoms into the familiar flavor of fresh pistachios. When thoroughly stirred, the brew thickens, and the pistachio flavor considerably strengthens. It's a euphoric, memorable experience. Finally made it to Browned and these Macau Mini Cream Puffs disappeared so fast the box looked personally offended. We got the 4-piece set with Bischoff Crunch, Taiwan Dong Ding Oolong Tea, Marukyu Matcha, and Dark Chocolate because leaving chocolate behind feels illegal. First bite in and suddenly everyone at the table forgot manners. The puff shells were perfectly crisp and airy, while the cream inside was smooth, light, and not sugar-bomb sweet. Every flavor showed up exactly as advertised too. The matcha came in earthy and rich, the oolong tasted like tea leaves earned a pastry degree, and the Bischoff Crunch almost caused a "who had more bites" courtroom situation. Meanwhile the Dark Chocolate sat there quietly like the cool cousin at the family party before completely stealing the show. The drinks were not about to get overshadowed either. The Pistachio Cream Top Latte was ridiculous in the best way possible, especially knowing they roast the pistachios in-house before turning them into that silky nutty cloud on top. Ambiance: can't speak on these since husband went to buy these for valentine's day Service: from what I know, there's a digital pre-order form for new flavor drops. The lady there also made recommendations such as the Valentine's day special and my husband was able to swap one of the original cream puffs he selected to that one Food: My favorite were the lemon and the blueberry, to my surprise. I tend to lean toward tea flavors but they did the fruit flavors justice. I went there on a Saturday at around 12:30 PM and it was very busy at the time. The line did go out the door and took about 15 minutes before I could order and go. This was ample time to look at all of their selection and menu. I decided to leave here with a 6 cream puff set. I got (1) rich taiwan dong ding oolong tea, strawberry milk mochi chocolate, madagascar vanilla bean, maple pecan with chocolate coating, blueberry heaven, and rich koyamaen matcha cream puffs. Most of these were not too sweet with the exception being the strawberry milk mochi chocolate. I personally liked the blueberry heaven and the rich koyamaen matcha and would get those again. As a big fan of cream puffs, I have been wanting to come try out this place for a long time. In additional to the cream puffs, all the pastries looked really good. Beard Papa's may have the market share on cream puff spots, but Browned definitely makes for a worthy contender! Located inside a condo complex, it's a small, cozy shop serving not only cream puffs but also coffee, tea, and other baked goods. What makes the cream puffs here so good is their unique crumbly, cookie-like shell, which reminds me of the topping on concha bread or a coffee bun. Combined with the fluffy whipped cream filling, it's easy to get addicted. The only thing that may give you pause at indulging in said addiction is at $4 a piece, they're a bit pricey for their small size. I ordered the four-piece assortment and chose the following flavors: vanilla bean, Biscoff crunch, matcha, and oolong. The vanilla bean and Biscoff were my favorites of the bunch. Matcha and oolong weren't very sweet, and the tea flavor came through strongly. If you prefer desserts that lean less sweet, you'll likely enjoy them. Found Browned on Instagram and I'm so glad I checked it out. The shop is small and cute with limited indoor seating but some spots outside too. We got a box of 6 cream puffs (lemon delight, oolong, matcha, biscoff, dark chocolate, vanilla) and they were all delicious. These are more artisanal-style cream puffs--light, not overly sweet. If you like super sugary desserts, this might not be your thing, but for us the balance was perfect. Shockingly, the Lemon Delight was our favorite--and I don't even normally like lemon desserts. We loved it so much we also got a lemon almond croissant (10/10, so good). We also tried a pistachio latte and hazelnut latte, and both were excellent--some of the best coffee I've had from a dessert shop. Final Thoughts Browned feels like a little hidden gem--beautiful cream puffs, amazing pastries, and great coffee all in one spot. We're already talking about going back to try more flavors and goodies. If you're into thoughtfully made desserts that aren't sugar bombs, this place is absolutely worth a visit. I ended up getting all the flavors of cream puffs to try. The cream puffs are a bit pricey though. This is my ranking but i know others will have different preferences. 1. Biscoff, maple pecan, vanilla, matcha, oolong, lemon, dark chocolate, blueberry. I would come back for the first 4. The other 4 flavors would not be on my list. Other people might have different rankings. I do not like dark chocolate since its usually bitter but i have friends who love dark chocolate. The oolong was bitter and not too sweat. Blueberry was too tart for me. I liked the cream puffs texture. It had some sort of crispy texture. I also got their sesame and pistachio coffee. A new hidden gem in San Gabriel! Browned is located inside the retail spaces at the bottom of The One apartment complex (across from Hawaii Supermarket)--since it is not visible from the outside, most people who pass by probably don't know it exists other than a banner on the side of the building. You can find it by walking from the corner entrance (past some security guards for the jewelry store in front), and it is located inside the middle of the open-air courtyard. I visited Browned for the first time on January 11th (Sunday) after eating lunch (around 2:30PM), and there were a number of people inside and outside the store, ordering/enjoying their pastries and drinks at the tables available. It is very clean inside, but the shop itself is not that big, so most people were either getting to-go orders or sitting at the tables outside. They still had a decent selection of cream puffs and pastries, so we had a hard time deciding what to get since we were kind of full from lunch. We decided to get a Madagascar vanilla bean cream puff and rich Taiwan ding dong oolong tea cream puff. The staff were nice and gave them to us on napkins since we were going to eat them right away, but they do offer boxes if you are buying them to go. The cream puffs are not huge, but since they are cream-filled, I think the size is good so you don't feel too heavy after eating them. The Madagascar vanilla bean was a delicious classic flavor, and you can see the flecks of vanilla throughout the cream. The rich Taiwan ding dong oolong tea one was not that sweet at all and very strong in tea flavor (slightly bitter), which we loved (but if you tend to like sweet desserts, this one may not be for you). The craquelin on top of both cream puffs was still lightly crispy, so it was a nice textural contrast with the smooth whipped cream inside. You can tell that they use high quality ingredients and put a lot of care into everything they make. Based on the two cream puffs we got, I can confidently say that Browned is worth visiting again. Browned is a new bakery in the 626 area selling some mouth-watering sweets and pastries. To get here, they have a parking structure or street parking options. Inside, they have a nice setup with some limited seating inside and more seating outside. They have pastries ranging from croissants, cookies, creampuffs, and more. Wifey and I ended up getting a box of creampuffs with the Oolong, Matcha, and Blueberry flavors. The oolong was definitely my favorite one! All of the staff here are friendly and welcoming. This place has definitely earned 3.5 stars in my book. I liked the array of flavors that they offered for their cream puff such as their blueberry heaven, lemon delight, classic dark chocolate, and Koyamaen Matcha. My favorite is definitely their Signature Biscoff Crunch. Their filling is on the lighter side though. It was definitely a journey getting my hands on these popular cream puffs! I happened to be in the area and decided to check out the hot and new bakeries in the area; saw that there was a new cream puff spot open on Del Mar and Valley. Totally missed the parking structure and parked on the residential street, but there is customer parking off Del Mar. Unfortunately I came by when there was an event and no cream puffs were available that day. I was told to come back early the next morning, which I did! Hours originally were at 11/11:30 - I got there around 12:30 and several flavors were already sold out. I was told that the next batch would be out around 2 pm. I ended up choosing a few duplicates, which worked out (although some flavors I really wanted to try were already out). You order in sets with 4 pieces at $16, 6 for $23, 8 for $30, and 12 for $44. I ended up going for a box of 6, trying the blueberry, maple pecan with chocolate coating, dark chocolate, and earl grey. These cream puffs aren't big, but more on the mini side. However, I can appreciate the time and effort it goes into baking these. Each one had a crispy shell, filled with pastry cream - super soft on the inside, making for a crunchy yet satisfyingly chewy bite. Out of the four, I liked blueberry and maple pecan the best, while the earl grey and chocolate were just ok. Definitely want to try the Biscoff and tea flavor, but I'll settle for trying it once the hype dies down (if it ever does!). There's a tall table for customers to enjoy the pastries, but no chairs as it's more of a grab and go place. I believe the bakery is run by a husband and wife duo. Maybe slightly overwhelmed with the success, but they seem to be doing great. You can order on hot plate to reserve a box although days and hours are limited. I came here on a Saturday afternoon to pick up some pastries because this bakery is only open several days during the week and I heard that it does get sold out quite often so I wanted to make sure that I tried this place! They did have a good selection of pastries available. I got some of their cream puffs, coffee and a croissant. The bakery is located on the first floor of an apartment complex. The store is relatively small and there is no seating inside so it's meant for being a to-go spot, though there is seating outside. They packed the pastries in a box and the coffee was made fresh on the spot. I saw the worker grind the coffee beans on the spot, and the quality shows because the coffee was really good. The cream puffs were good and came with several flavors. I got a box of six and got all of their flavors, the chocolate being my favorite. There was a lot of cream in the puff which I didn't prefer, but that's a personal preference on my end. The croissant was also really good, super soft and flaky! Delicious cream puffs!! Their cream puffs are like choux au craquelin--crispy cookie layer on the outside with creamy, flavorful fillings. Although Yelp says they open at 11AM, they actually open at 12PM (they're working to fix that). Kelly (I think the owner) was so helpful in answering my questions about the desserts. I tried the Biscoff, Matcha, Vanilla, Taiwan Dong Ding Oolong Tea, and Blueberry. The Biscoff was the sweetest but also my favorite because it had a nice crunch. The Oolong Tea had a strong, distinct tea flavor, and both the Matcha and Vanilla were at just the right sweetness for me. 6 pieces came out to $23. Kelly also mentioned that most people come around 1-2PM, and they usually sell out of certain flavors later in the afternoon, so go earlier if you want more options. Parking: I used the parking garage (entrance located on Del Mar Ave) that connects to the shops and residential lobby. I have always been a fan of Beard Papa's, but Browned just took cream puffs to the next level - now I can't look back. One bite of the cream puffs from Browned and you'll instantly know that the quality of ingredients used at Browned is of higher quality. To give an example, look at my photo comparing the green matcha puff from Beard Papa's vs. from Browned (yes, I went to both places on the same day as I wanted to be able to do a head-to-head comparison) - just look at that color difference!!! The store is very small, so it can quickly get crowded. However, staff are friendly, happy to answer any questions, and are prompt in their service. There were 2 groups ahead of me and I waited about 5-8 minutes. 1. Koyamaen Matcha Cream Puff (5/5) The high quality matcha used can truly be tasted upon 1st bite. The earthy and subtly bitterness goes to show the quality. If you're not a fan of that earthy, grassy taste and prefer more of sweet matcha, then this may not be for you; better stick to Beard Papa's matcha puffs then. The outer shell of the puff was perfectly baked to the right amount of crispiness to give that crunch without being over "browned [haha, get it?]." It has a lightly caramelized texture, but is not too sweet at all. 2. Madagascar Vanilla Bean Cream Puff (5/5): Wowie - in a good way. The vanilla flavor was very strong; it's like eating the old fashion vanilla flavored ice cream from the good-ol days. Rich and delightful. 3. 64% Chocolate Cream Puff (5/5): If you are a chocolate lover, you cannot miss this flavor. It is decadent with its dark, bitter chocolate flavor...yet, not too sweet or sickening. 4. Biscoff Crunch Cream Puff (5/5): The base is mild and creamy, but is infused with pieces of Loft cookie bits, which adds that addicting Loft cookie taste and adds crunch to the overall texture. 5. Taiwan Oolong Tea (4/5) Cream Puff (4/5): This was actually the flavor I was most looking forward to as I am a HUGE tea lover. Unfortunately, this flavor failed to meet my expectation. The cream itself has a good amount of roasted tea flavor, but once you eat it with the puff shell, it overpowers the tea flavor and immediately loses the tea flavor/character. I hope they work on the ratio of tea flavoring on this to improve it as there is so much potential here. 6. Squished Croissant (5/5): Say what? Yes, you read that right. It's literally a croissant that was SQUISHED/smashed and then baked. It is super crunchy & buttery; almost like a "concentrated croissant." The taste reminds me of those butterfly palmier cookies. I came here one day to try their Dong Ding Oolong cream puff, and I have continued to come ever since! As a baker, I am a bit jealous of how perfect their shells are. They are perfectly crispy and buttery, even while holding a dollop of cream inside. The Dong Ding Oolong flavor is the best if you don't like sweets too much, and the Biscoff is the best for you sweet tooths! Honestly would highly recommend browned for a sweet treat! I ordered four of their cream puffs to try. I ordered the chocolate hazelnut maple, matcha, lemon, and oolong cream puff. My personal favorite was the oolong and the lemon. You can really taste the oolong flavor in the cream. The cream puffs weren't too sweet either. The cream puff shell also had a light breading to it and wasn't too soft like beard papa's. Browned is on the pricier end, though considering that these are specialty cream puffs I would say it's worth the splurge. Service was decent. Finally got to try this new cream puffs spot everyone has been raving about. So glad I did cuz it's one of the best cream puffs I ever had. It's not overly sweet, very flavorful, and made to perfection. Each bite is so mouth watering delicious. Really like the tea flavored ones. It tastes just like a milk tea drink.
