As soon as we touched down in Chicago my prego foodie request was fulfilled Pound Cake slice from Brown Sugar Bakery!!! We also completed a cake order, and purchased additional slices of cake. It was so busy as customers were pouring in all at once. The pound cake has moist in the center with a slightly hard crust; it one of the best slices of pound cake I've purchased. If you're a caramel lover the Caramel cake is a must order, several people were purchasing multiple slices of it. I'll update my review after we receive our cake order. The cake (that lasted 5 minutes,) was extremely moist, and absolutely delicious. All of the guest wanted to know where it was made, and everyone mentioned how they will be visiting the bakery very soon. I flew in from California for my mother's 90th Birthday celebration and we chose Brown Sugar Bakery for the birthday cake!! All I can say is that the cake was stellar!! I was unfamiliar with this bakery, but my sister was, and after going to the business I was extremely impressed with the staff, customer service, and the bustling activity in the establishment! I wish there was a similar one in the Bay Area in California! My mother's favorite is Coconut Pineapple cake and it didn't disappoint. If anyone has a special occasion, or just have a sweet tooth, this should be on the top of your list of your choices. My husband surprised me with The Obama cake for our 21st wedding Anniversary, and I was blown away. The cake was BEAUTIFUL and DELICIOUS. The multiple layers of flavors was a shock when I cut into the cake and all 4 layers were great. I will definitely be back to try other products. read more

Fantastic cakes! Terrific service! I've ordered from BSB several times. The cakes are absolutely delicious. The staff is so friendly and helpful. I live in Cali but whenever I'm visiting family in Chgo, I find a reason to order. I've ordered the strawberry, the caramel, the Obama, and the sherbet cakes thus far. My fave? SWEET TOOTH SATISFIED! Holy crap the desserts were great. I purchased two cupcakes today, red velvet, rainbow sherbet and a slice of Carmel cake. Ohhhh weeee, tasty sweets and it is literally across the street from Lem's BBQ. Very cute bakery with rich history and roots! Owned and operated by a mother daughter. It doesn't get much better than that. If you want cake slices they offer that too and cupcakes!!! I am fairly certain I saw a sign that said they offered delivery. read more

My first and last experience at this so called "elite bakery". I ordered two cakes from here for a repast last week and was completely disappointed with what I received. The cake seemed to be just slapped together and the carmel was so thick I could barely cut through it!! When I called the manager to complain she told me to bring the cake back.WHAT??!! I was in the middle of a repast with this bogus cake on the table. So since I did not leave the repast to bring them back what was left of this cake Brown Sugar Bakery refuses to give me a refund. WOW!!! Oh well, lessoned learned. I will never patronize this business again and if this is the quality and customer care that they stand for I would encourage you NOT TO PATRONIZE them either! I went to Brown Sugar Bakery yesterday 10/18/23 and bought a 4 layer caramel cake on the fly, wanted a 2 layer cake but this is all they had. Pros: the cake was moist and it had decent caramel on it. Cons: The employees were straight and to the point, very direct and not welcoming. But they were young so, I see it. The cake had this terrible white icing on it. I guess to keep the layers together.....terrible. We use to buy cakes from here years ago maybe 10 or more years ago. The caramel icing was thinner sticky and delicious. This caramel was regular. The type you get from any bakery. The back part of the cake with the odd white icing was inedible. I would be okay if that white icing wasn't there. Plus the icing around the sides of the cake wouldn't stay on when you cut it. read more

My God. The baker has bless hands, when I tell you. This the best baker in town. I havent had all the favors of the cake but the ones I did have they are my favorite. My sister alway order me a Carmel cake because that is my favorite cake, but the Obama cake is to died for, and the red velvet cake is good too. This is my first time coming here. The website needs to be updated because it states this site is not open on Sundays and it was open and busy. The customer service was very poor. There were pies and cakes not on display but in the back and on the side. We had to ask what they were and were they for sale versus it being readily available for customers to view and purchase. The turtle cheesecake was hidden and I had to ask and it was for sale. The cheesecake was AMAZING!! The turtle cheesecake was is thick and moist and just melts in your mouth. The chocolate cupcake and brownie is good but my favorite is the turtle cheesecake. The sweet treats are good but the service truly needs improvement. read more

Do not order the cupcakes or deserts that are displayed in the glass. I have ordered the deserts from inside of the display glass several times and they were stale. Ensure that you received your cupcakes from the back. Otherwise don't waste your money. read more

FIRST THING FIRST....WHEN YOU CHECK IN ON YELP, YOU GET A FREE CUPCAKE!!!!! When you first walk in, the place smells like sugar deliciousness and love. I ordered a slice of caramel cake and a German chocolate cupcake. The 4 layer slice of caramel cake lasted 4 days, shared by 2 people...ITS HUGE!!!!! The cupcake was so delicious, so moist, so tasty. I spent $4.11 for 2 desserts, I will definitely be back and they are across the street from Lem's BBQ. I can get dinner and dessert. read more

Ordered a cake for my dad.It was just ok.Thick layers of whipped cream was too much.I ordered it a week in advance and still had to wait 25 minutes for it.Took a long time to box it up and that was done terribly.The cake didn't really fit in the box and it messed up one side as I carried it out.The writing on the cardboard looked like my 7 year old wrote it.The cake was decent at best.For my next Father's Day picnic....I'm good on this place. read more

We all know the dessert ain't no good if you don't have to ponder for at least two seconds whether it's about to give you instant diabetes. MY LORD, it's so delicious! I came in to get a slice of the Obama Cake since it is highly recommended on Yelp, and I just don't understand why I haven't had it in my life before. It's truly perfection! Vanilla cake, chocolate cake, and red velvet! I mean, it makes perfect sense. The cake was moist, the icing is phenomenal, and the pecans on top just made it out of this world! I also ordered a German chocolate cupcake which I haven't had yet because I gotta pace myself. Do yourself a favor and treat yourself to some Brown Sugar Bakery! Bought a cake this weekend. The cake was so fresh and moist. The frosting is very sweet, so be prepared but the cake is delicious and worth every bite. I haven't tried any other cakes but the caramel is what they are famous for. I recommend getting this cake because it never disappoints. Prices are fair read more

We made our first trek here after visiting the cherry blossoms in Jackson Park. The staff are so friendly and eager that we knew about everything they offered. It all looked delicious. We settled on a slice of double chocolate cake, a slice of the cream cheese pound cake, a caramel donut, and an Oreo cupcake. They tossed in a slice of yellow cake as a surprise freebie. They are very COVID sensitive. There are markings for where to stand to ensure social distance. Plexiglass screens are up to reduce transmission and masks were required (and were worn by all staff). You can pay with credit card or cash (don't forget to tip the hard working staff!) We enjoyed chatting with Sarah (not sure of her spelling), the manager. She was incredibly nice and encouraged us to come back and to visit their outpost at Navy Pier when they are allowed to reopen there. So far, we have only tried the double chocolate cake and the pound cake. I am a chocolate cake fan and this one was delicious -- moist, tender crumb, rich chocolate flavor, smooth frosting. It was good we only bought the one slice as I would have had a hard time showinng restraint! The pound cake also had a good crumb, and delicious frosting. It was a tad drier than the chocolate cake (perhaps because it's a different kind of cake). We look forward to trying the rest. In any event, we will make the trek back there. They have spaces outdoors where you can immediately enjoy your purchases. Sarah pointed out you can order a full 8" cake and have it shipped. That is dangerous information! read more

It is not what it used to be! The cake slices are now served pre-cut from the fridge. The cake once had a velvety soft texture (see pic below) now the crumb is coarse and has a store-bought taste. The caramel also has a gritty feel, which may be a result from being refrigerated. The caramel cake here used to be better than Angelica's. Now, I can't tell the difference. I have to RAVE on the cake I got for my birthday today! I was surprised with lunch at work which was great but the kicker was this chocolate, caramel swirl cake! It looked like a cinnamon bun and tasted like heaven. This cake had four layers with caramel in between each a chocolate frosting with caramel frosting over that - to DIE for. The sandwiches, pasta salad, drinks and whatnot I shared with folks after lunch, the cake...you about to get a plastic fork through your hand! Ha ha nothing! After seeing a mouth watering picture of their vanilla cream cheese caramel cake on IG, I knew I had to get over to this bakery. I called several times throughout the day to make sure they would not run out as I did not get off work until 4:00 and I was getting nervous. I was assured that they would have plenty of cake and when I arrived, all of my fears were put aside. I walked away with 6 slices of the vanilla cream cheese caramel cake and the regular caramel cake. I also checked in on Yelp and got a free cupcake and I chose the sherbert. Everything was soooo good and the prices are very reasonable! I cannot wait to come back and try their other desserts. read more

The ube flavor is both sweet and nutty and the mousse topping was light and delicious. The main squeeze is lemon cake filled with lemon curd, cream cheese frosting, and a buttercream lemon on top. Both were incredible, but my favorite was the lemon! I loved that the lemon flavor was light, and the cream cheese frosting balanced it out really nicely. The space is so cute inside! It's also a lot larger than I was expecting. We grabbed a seat at one of the tables inside to enjoy our treats. I will definitely be back with my toddler for a cupcake date soon!

I learned of this bakery years ago but avoided it because the cake actually looks so rich that your sugar goes up just by the smell and I didn't want to be tempted. Anyway, I finally decided to try the cake and it was okay, nothing to rave about but I wanted to support an African American female owned business in the community. The owner was very, very, very rude and her staff was really bottom of the barrow uneducated in the industry. The owner has people waiting on customers who should be working in in Shipping and Receiving. The help was behaving so badly and wiped crumbs off the counter to put in my cake box and I told them I didn't want that particular piece. I understand working in undeserved communities and hiring the elements from the community can be challenging. The owner could less about customer service. Her motto is, "dangerously delicious" and I agree that her desserts are, "dangerously delicious....because just a few bites of the cake will send your sugar soaring to a diabetic coma which is prevalent in the African American and Latino communities and it is killing our community. I also want to say the owner (Stephanie Hart), got into an argument with a person I took to the bakery who was from out of town and next thing you know, the owner kept saying that she knew the person visiting and then she said that she would pull out a pistol and take care of the young lady like they do on the streets because the owner, Stephanie Hart thought my friend who was simply visiting, she assumed we were there to steal her ideas and that was not the case as at all. Stephanie Hart the Owner is extremely ghetto fabulous and she is way to old to behave as if she is in a gang and with all due respect, I think she may have been in prison at some sort based on how she has no fear and actually told a customer that she was going to get a pistol and take care of her. Stephanie Hart also said that she was ADHD and she is simply awful with clients and the place is so dingy and I will never patron this place again and left the cake right there on the counter. I will never go back to Brown Sugar Bakery on 328 75th Street in Chicago again........EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I heard she is going to be in Navy Pierre but I don't know how she is going to be able to handle those clients because she and her staff are hood rats! Today was my first time trying Brown Sugar Bakery after constantly driving by, curiously peering in. All I hv2 say is, I need to go jogging NOW! I had a big slice of vanilla caramel cake, a caramel cupcake, strawberry cupcake, and the butter cookies. Everything was DELICIOUS! The batter of the cake was just as good as the icing, and the icing is sweet w/o tasting like cheap syrup. I am still looking foward to trying the taffy apple cake and as far as the service, it was fine. I didn't go in there to make a friend, just expand the waistline.
